Biography
Role
At Nemnosti, Marga's main role is to assist in 'the Hunt' (run by Meze Hazh), which is less of a formal or ritualized hunt and more of a routinized practice whereby vultures search the nearby area, perhaps hunting for game or scavenging, but also being alert for external dangers outside the grounds, gathering information about weather or natural risks, scouting for arrivals and departures or anything unusual in the human realm as well. If the stoneguards are the bulwark at home, Marga and the other vultures are the eyes and ears looking both uphill and down. Vultures play a role in teaching the acolytes at Nemnosti also, so Marga might occasionally (and increasingly, as she gets older) be involved in that when it is necessary to take groups of acolytes out into the Ghengom, or to do some stretching exercises.
NPCs
People
- Ailal Takovenga: Everyone in the Ghengom knows her by her nickname, Sister Hush. She is a skilled hunter but not actually a vulture, who grew up in the high hills, as you did. She is treated with fear by some of the young acolytes, who know her as the person who complains when they trash the place, but you found her very comforting when you first arrived, because she is loyal, honest, and trustworthy, something you'd never known before that. She divides her time between Nemnosti and Akapa Sogo.
- Amasa Nemni: AKA Fables or Dinel. Her job at Nemnosti is as a teacher of the Courses, but really, it is to help new acolytes adjust, especially those who didn't have a typical education - helping students to learn to read, for instance, without stigma. She is so warm and compassionate that at first you mistrusted her a bit (can anyone be that nice?) but she has never wavered in her cheery demeanor. Of course you're grown now but Amasa is a rock of support among the teachers at Nemnosti.
- Bache Tokanai: AKA Cascade. A vulture who lives in the Turtu, downriver from Nemnosti, and has turned their skills to brigandry, along with a group of followers, exploiting (mainly) lowlanders, visitors, etc. Many of the older Ravre vultures find Cascade and their followers distasteful. They have a loose alliance with your dad, which can be awkward. You've met them at various wakes in the community, where they are perfectly well-behaved.
- Bistu Borgegi: AKA Bucketstrap. Not an acolyte, but a ward of Nemnu sent by her friend Borgegus Ula to serve as a Voice here for a year or two. He's around your age and hangs around with you and others your age quite a bit, but clearly doesn't (yet) understand the place.
- Bura Hazh: AKA Zephyr or Larar. Bura is the person most responsible for recruiting Ravre to be acolytes, and it was through her intervention with your lineage that you were able to come at all. As a strong reckoner she has a wealth of connections in all the communities of the hillfolk. She has a forceful, almost dominating personality and you know she gets along well enough with the Gagos. Your sense of her is that she brought you to be an acolyte not out of compassion mainly, but out of her sense of your potential.
- Dodemozh Vegru: Your stepbrother, born soon after your mom left your dad and moved to Bemnes to be with her new husband. You've met Dodemozh and his brother Ergasi a bunch of times, especially since you came to Nemnosti, but you're hardly close. Your mom wants him to come and start training as an acolyte and get to know you better, and wants you to convince him to try, and Nemnu to take him.
- Ghorgimbe Sortusai: AKA Braidworthy or Jazra. Stoneguard, weapons master and trainer at Nemnosti, from the nobility but pretty down to earth despite that. You work with her along with Kuspir, Bem, and a few others pretty regularly. Never married, but you're pretty sure she's had some female partners around the ulajeta over the years.
- Giri Hazh: Jevai's new Upward since her old one disappeared; a powerful sigillant originally from nearby Akapa Sogo. You had him as a teacher years ago, but you know him much better through his twin sister Meze, a powerful vulture / mentor. Nice guy but hopelessly distracted.
- Khorond Zainai: Your cousin, a pretty burly kid who came to Nemnosti about a year ago and is now Nemnu's personal apprentice, which is a big deal. The Zainai side of your family is the normal side, and Khorond is fine you guess - quiet until he starts drinking. You are supposed to help him adjust and keep an eye on him.
- Meze Hazh: AKA Kaifuri or Yearny (rarely). Most powerful vulture at Nemnosti, and one of the most powerful in the province. She is the Master of the Hunt and relies on you (and some others) to help with those tasks. She's a little bit older than your dad and you know she doesn't get along with him, and though she's not a warm fuzzy person, has kept an eye on you over the years and seems to respect you a lot.
- Momuzai Nemni: AKA Singalong or Siskin. He's the most likely heir to be the Nemni hengi; you were acolytes along with him and Jevai, or around the same time. Beefy and a good fighter, but definitely not one of the finest minds at the ulajeta. He definitely feels the pressure to be special, in a place full of special people. Likeable enough, and has a somewhat casual relationship with your friend, the stoneguard Bem Pekai.
- Ozh Laigrunuf: AKA Upwing or Tovra. Her lineage used to be Ravre long ago, but now are more 'civilized', you guess, but many still live and hunt in the far north of the province, and are very poor. Ozh started as mystic, and is friendly with Alai also, but is more interested in poems, myths, and stories, and wants to become a reckoner, so she works closely with Bura.
- Pazo Vegru: AKA Trembles. Your stepdad, who married your mom shortly after she left Hong Sogo 14 years ago. His lineage is the same as Alai's, so descended from Luetkans, but he doesn't seem to have much interest in his heritage, and neither do his two kids, your stepbrothers, Dodemozh and Ergasi. He is very closely linked to the powerful Kaisastelovis noble lineage and works for them as a brewer in the town of Bemnes. Nice enough guy you guess - very normal.
- Rechegoko Naznaz: A vulture, maybe a little older than you, whose lineage is not from any of the villages in Khutu, but from somewhere over the mountain. You have met him a few times when you were training, and he comes down as far as Nemnosti every now and again. He seems to be totally separated from his lineage and isn't even close with most other vultures.
- Saza Gago: AKA Widdershins (spoken by people as almost a curse). Your dad's sister, and one of the most powerful sigillants - she is Jevai's Downward mentor. Saza is crazy in a different way from your dad, but just as dangerous - intellectual rather than physical, and absolutely brutal as opposed to erratic. At least with Saza I guess you can rely on her being nasty, as opposed to wondering who is going to show up on any given day. You have never met someone as capable of destroying someone's spirit. Some days you worry about whatever is in your lineage that makes people like her. She doesn't come to Nemnosti but still has close contact with Jevai and sometimes you see her in that context. She is the only person you know of who has ever made Jevai cry (other than you).
- Sholtishoghor: A Hand of the Dead who serves the high hill communities, including Hong Sogo, where you grew up. You don't know her actual lineage and she seems to not have any known family. It's hard to say whether she's actually an ally of your dad or is just completely subject to him out of fear, but she is definitely the person who Tocha goes to when he's arranging marriages for his kin. Before you came to Nemnosti she was the only person you ever saw in the company of bubun.
- Sumasi Zipizmo: A well-regarded Voice of the Dead in Hong Sogo, where you grew up, head of the temple where your various Gago and Zainai ancestors are interred. Befriended you when you were a child, seemed to recognize that your situation was not normal, but not powerful enough to intervene against your father. Not friendly, exactly, but supportive and reliable.
- Tocha Gago: Known proudly as Snapping Dog. Your dad, mercurial, outgoing, funny at times, then brutal, depriving you of food, beating his followers, turning a smile to a scowl in half a second. You learned a lot from him: mistrust, self-reliance, fear ... He and his vulture allies are numerous - he is not only the Gago hengi, but one of the most potent hunters and vultures in the Ghengom. From his base at the iftibal in Hong Sogo, he is a master of manipulation - while keeping the threat of violence always just under the surface. You're still not totally sure why he let you come to Nemnosti in the first place - maybe something Bura said, or Saza? You still have a kind of relationship with him but are out of the immediate circle where he can do damage.
- Vaika Zainai: Your mom, sometimes formerly known as Crevice. Everyone says you look like her, but mostly she just looks sad - and not nearly as muscled as you. She had you when she was only 17 (your dad was almost 30) and then, when you were just eight, the marriage crumbled and she fled to Bemnes where she married her current husband. You didn't see her much from then until you came to Nemnosti as an acolyte, and since then you have been rebuilding a relationship. She doesn't like to talk about her early life or her first marriage, with you or anyone else. She works alongside her new husband Pazo on the Kaisastelovis estates as a fisher in the river.
- Vodikra Nukhumbi: AKA Unleashed or Zera. Vodikra is a member of the nobility in north Daligash, and came to the ulajeta as an acolyte as part of some political deal, arriving on the same day as you, practically. You are very different people - she has all this wealth and likes to show it off, and while she's not mean about it, it's all awkward. She's a calligrapher now at Nemnosti, but they say it's just a matter of time before her arranged marriage will become a reality.
Revenants
- Bem Pekai: A stoneguard about your age, born as Miti, you would call her Lozla often, she took the ghir Bem upon her rebirth after a raid a few years ago. Like you, a Ravre, more physical than mental, and has very little contact with her home lineage. Her relationship with Momuzai is maybe not the most solid - you've been meaning to ask her about it but that's not an easy subject. Since her rebirth she is mostly nocturnal. Strong, agile, super good fighter, very very quiet.
- Lijun Ararta: AKA Long Sable or Alfun. Middle-aged Ravre vulture, teaches wilderness survival, geography, that kind of thing. Probably second most skilled vulture other than Meze at the ulajeta. Grew up in Akapa Sogo, he is related to Jevai, Ifa and Izu through their mother's lineages. The only person you've ever known to come back as a double revenant - that was all a long time ago though. Quiet, pensive, cautious. Pretty much everyone now knows he's gay and that his partner Gigos lives at Nemnosti, where Lijun himself mostly still lives up over the hill in Akapa Sogo.
- Pughan Nadenigh: AKA Spindletop. A young vulture from Akapa Sogo, never an acolyte or anything like that - you met him since he's Jevai's little brother. Died in a hunting accident and came back stupid(er) and reckless(er). He reminds you of every gross, nasty vulture and hunter who surrounds your dad and does his bidding, although he's never actually done anything bad to you.
Ancestors
- Ivis Nemni: AKA Duskwatcher or Chindi, during her life. Your dimirabas (ancestor where your lady's name came from), lived here in the early days of Nemnosti as a very early Ravre follower of Nemnu. Was the watcher at the now-abandoned tower at Vulusilt. A warrior and scout and a war hero who gave her entire life to the Lady and earned her eternal respect and love. Definitely a badass. You talk to her now and again, maybe less often than you should, when you need guidance.
Ikhano
- Eikuuruu: An actual vulture who lives around Nemnosti and Akapa Sogo. Mainly solitary but comes to roost now and again at the ulajeta on / near the great tree, Old Hai. Vultures know him as the reincarnation (suralai) of the great culture hero / vulture Khogorutu whose remains are long lost, but survives reborn in bird form. Eikuuruu met you early during your time as an acolyte and has taken an interest in you - in the way that a curious bird likes shiny things. He is a good source of information on things going on in the upper Pardopasu valley / the environs of Nemnosti.
Special Notes
- You have only met the great Ushukuna once, at a great wake held up in the high hills a few years ago. You never know whether you are welcome at vulture things, but Meze took you and the other hunters with her and it was not a problem. The whole thing was like a dream, so exciting, but so intense. The moment when you met Ushukuna Herself, She looked at you, as if perusing a precious stone, and remarked, "You are the crack who becomes the crevice" which you guess must be a reference to your udul and your mom's.
- One time when you were hanging out with Rechegoko, this was probably a couple years ago, he showed you a pouch full of what looked like lichen. He explained that it grows on certain rocks mostly on the far side of Momichas, and that it makes you feel full of energy and aggression. You didn't try it that time, but you always wondered.
- When you were little, you remember that in one of his darker moods, your dad mused that his mother, Heza Gago, had killed her first husband (not your granddad) in his sleep. He explained that you were strong, like his mom, like his sister, like all the Gago women, which is why he took her lineage and not his dad's (Koje). You didn't believe it - your dad makes shit up all the time - but consulting with the priest Sumasi, you spoke to your grandmother who confirmed it. You were maybe six at the time. She killed him and was never caught.
- Meze Hazh is kind of a mentor to you; she's very close with her twin brother Giri. When you were an acolyte, Giri's wife Ozel died and in the aftermath of her death, Meze seemed almost ... happy? You are not an expert in things but it reminded you a lot of the times when your dad would revel in some act of violence or brutality - much quieter, but equally unexplained.
