Session date: 1/10/19

<Narrator> A day, two days have passed. The sun still rises and sets more or less in the same place, so that's nice.
<Daeshulu> (Yeah, we established that right off. :))
<Narrator> (Oh hey question: What did the world see while Starbuck was bubbled?)
<Narrator> (Did they see the dome? An empty crater?)
<Narrator> (I just noticed the Scuttlebutt topic described it as "missing.")
<Muriel> (apparently, it was just empty fields, and there was a goblin town?)
<Daeshulu> (All they told us was that Starbuck was gone. I mean, it happened like centuries before those undead guys were even born.)
<Narrator> (Let alone died and came back?)
<Daeshulu> (Also, other planar stuff was happening at the time, so it might not have been a big deal at the time.)
<Daeshulu> (Heh, yeah)
<Narrator> (Sorry, I'm going to have to take a second to find my footing. I'm still game, but today was not what I was expecting and I didn't get time to plan, so I'm gonna be flying by the seat of my pants. So I apologize for this early roughness)
<Muriel> (no worries, we're easy)
<Daeshulu> (S'all good.)
<Daeshulu> (We can just be chilling.)
<Daeshulu> (Starbuck 4 lyfe!)
<Daeshulu> (Though Daeshulu might be staying at the Riven Maiden or the Wanton Wench.)
<Daeshulu> Anybody going out today?
<Narrator> Actually, there is.
<Muriel> I hope whoever it is doesn't bring back more skeletons.
<Daeshulu> (To Muriel) Okus-dolus, you went out the first night, right?
<Muriel> Yes, a few of us went north
<Daeshulu> Out to...Rivergard, was it?
<Daeshulu> And I hear there are undead to the west.
<Muriel> Yes, and the skeletons *we* came across were much less accommodating
<Daeshulu> Oh, so undead everywhere.
<Daeshulu> Hence the palisade going up, I guess.
* Muriel nods approvingly at it
<Muriel> I was thinking of seeing what's going on to the east, I'm starting to run low of a few things
<Daeshulu> Like civilization?
<Muriel> I was thinking more along the lines of dried frogs, but sure
* Daeshulu 's antennae twitch a bit at that.
<Daeshulu> Dried frogs?
<Mayor Coldbrew> I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that. Then I'd have to ask what that's about. *Aggun Coldbrew is a common sight in the Starbuck. Maybe a little too common; it's not just a bar, it's one of the family businesses, but still, shouldn't he be...mayoring?*
<Muriel> I use them in some of my medicines, along with a few other things. Since the plants have changed, I don't know what I might not be able to get anymore, and what I'll still have access to
<Mayor Coldbrew> And too late. *He sighs*
<Mayor Coldbrew> *And then strides up to the table*
<Daeshulu> Mayor?
<Mayor Coldbrew> *Or at least takes one more step there. He was already close enough to overhear.*
<Muriel> (aside to Daeshulu) there's a man could use a bit of frog
* Daeshulu hides a smile by taking a drink of his...let's say coffee.
<Mayor Coldbrew>*The mayor's mouth twists a little, and puckers, but he shakes his head and runs his fingers through his beard.* So, some of you were the brave kids who took a ride out there, I understand?
* Muriel nods
<Muriel> Rupert and I went out with some others, yes
<Mayor Coldbrew> Rup--Oh, yes. Your bird. *He nods, sagely.* I also hear that at least some of our neighbors are good to buy or sell.
<Daeshulu> To, you mean?
<Muriel> That was the other group, with the friendly skeletons
<Daeshulu> Someone named after a song, I think?
<Narrator> All the more important, then! *He slaps a meaty hand on the table.* If we've got people who want to do business and people who aren't our friends, then we make friends with the former. Or at least business partners.
<Daeshulu> Well, they did say there was a trading post upriver, right?
<Daeshulu> That's something.
<Mayor Coldbrew> That *is* something. *He nods* The harvest of Coldbrew dark roast I have is another thing. I'm pretty sure my usual customers are...well, let's just say 'not a thing.'
<Daeshulu> Very astute, your mayorship.
<Muriel> I'm not sure skeletons are big drinkers, though.
<Mayor Coldbrew> *He laughs, barking* Of course they're not. But if it's a trading post, then who else do they do business with?
* Daeshulu shrugs.
<Mayor Coldbrew> Someone has to drink. Someone needs the spring in their step that a rich, dark cup of well-steeped Coldbrew provides.
* Muriel cocks her head at the mayor.
<Muriel> Are you going to stand there singing your own praises or do you actually want something?
* Daeshulu looks over at Muriel with a raised eyebrow.
<Mayor Coldbrew> Someone--*He pauses, and frowns*
<Mayor Coldbrew> *He frowns deeper, sighs, and when he speaks again it's with a grumbly, matter-of-fact tone.* The point is that Starbuck never stood alone. And now our usual trading partners have dried up along with the flow of travellers. My family has pretty much the only major export this town had.
* Nurusi sighs
<Daeshulu> You have a dockyard. Though I guess that's mostly for repairs...
<Nurusi> I'd say, to cut a long story/advertisement for your business short, what you're saying is that we're alone here.
<Daeshulu> Which we already knew.
<Muriel> And much as I like the occasional bit of coffee, I think our bigger concern is actual food
<Nurusi> Well...I suppose that's politics. Educating you on the finer points of things you already knew.
<Mayor Coldbrew>Yes. It would be a good thing for me, for you, and for the whole damn village to get some people familiar with the way to market. Because when we sell, we can buy.
<Daeshulu> Did you need something, Mayor Coldbrew? We're not part of your family, *nin* we're not even from here, I don't think, and we're not salespeople.
<Daeshulu> Are you asking us to walk out with flyers or something?
<Mayor Coldbrew> I was mainly hunting down the people who went out in the first place.
<Mayor Coldbrew>*He gestures to Muriel* It seems reasonable if they made it back once, they can do it again.
* Nurusi considers.
<Nurusi> Maybe further?
<Muriel> And what are you prepared to offer in return?
<Nurusi> Fair question.
<Daeshulu> Something tells me they don't accept beans as payment.
<Mayor Coldbrew> Yes. I will pay you. Gold. Rations. Whatever. I have a thing to sell. I could even...*he sighs* There are some things in the family I hope I can talk the others in to parting with. Art, tools, that sort of thing.
<Daeshulu> What kind of tools?
* Daeshulu looks interested in that at least.
<Muriel> I suppose I can look for skeletons as well as frogs, at that.
<Nurusi> I'm sure we can find a bit of both for you.
<Mayor Coldbrew> Nothing fancy. We've got some knives, some shears and saws, a couple plows that we repaired while we were waiting for the sky to come back. All in good shape, and it's not like we have anything like the acreage that needs all of it anymore.
<Daeshulu> Oh. -_-
<Narrator> What were you hoping for? Some fancy off-world stuff?
<Daeshulu> Gold's fine, if you folks don't mind me tagging along. I want to see what's out there myself.
<Daeshulu> Mister mayor, I *am* fancy off-world stuff.
<Daeshulu> But I'm happy enough to go spread the good word of coffee or whatever.
<Mayor Coldbrew> *His eyebrows lift, and he scopes out the antennae* Sorry to disappoint.
<Muriel> So back west, then?
<Muriel> Or do you want us to try the east?
<Mayor Coldbrew> I could give you a pickaxe. I don't use one, I don't know anyone in my family who does, but my great-grandmother used to say that a pickaxe bought from dwarven hands is worth five times what the dwarf bought for it. *he shrugs*
<Nurusi> East sounds just as good as West.
<Narrator> (Which way is upriver, for the purposes of that being where the trading post is?)
<Daeshulu> (East is upriver)
<Daeshulu> (We need to finish their trip there, but Nuru and Muriel at least know that Rivergard has some tiny, none-to-friendly faeries, and is on the trip back east. It's also reasonably easy to avoid.)
<Mayor Coldbrew> East. *he nods* If that's where people trade, then that's where we need to go. And for all our sakes hope that some actual, edible food passes through.
<Muriel> (trading was west though)
<Daeshulu> (Trading was both. We've only met the one's to the west, but they mentioned the ones to the east)
<Daeshulu> East is easy enough then.
<Daeshulu> I travel pretty light, so I'm good to go.
<Nurusi> Same here.
<Muriel> Well, enough dallying about, then. Two silvers says Rupert's still neck-deep in his stew bowl.
<Daeshulu> No bet.
<Mayor Coldbrew> *Aggun takes a deep breath* I hoped you'd see it my way. I was afraid I'd have to run it by Makuama and have her pitch it as her idea.
<Daeshulu> Oh, Captain Makuama? Yeah, I'd have listened to her.
<Muriel> She's got a good head on her shoulders
<Mayor Coldbrew> Exactly.
* Nurusi shrugs
<Daeshulu> You have a boat we can use, Mayor?
<Mayor Coldbrew> I think I can swing that.
<Mayor Coldbrew> *He nods slowly*
<Mayor Coldbrew> Give me a couple hours. I'm going to need to get your cargo together.
<Daeshulu> Meet you down by the docks, *dalus*?
<Daeshulu> I need to go get my gear.
<Daeshulu> Cargo?
<Daeshulu> I thought this was an advertising job.
<Muriel> Do you really want to risk a whole boatload of beans on the unknown?
<Mayor Coldbrew> What kind of fool do you take me for? *He quirks an eyebrow, daring them to answer.*
<Daeshulu> No bet.
<Muriel> What are you expecting we carry, then?
<Mayor Coldbrew> A few sacks of beans. Tools. A couple statues that have been clogging our hallway since before my beard was full.
<Mayor Coldbrew> I'm not going to suggest you go somewhere to trade empty-handed.
<Mayor Coldbrew> Or at least to show up and scope things out like paupers.
<Daeshulu> Yeah, that'd be gauche.
<Daeshulu> Fair enough. I'll meet you folks down on the docks, then.
* Muriel mumbles something about washing the gravy out of Rupert's feathers
<Mayor Coldbrew> *Aggun turns his head to the bar, and yells.* Ku! Get me a pint to go.
* Ku doesn't give an acutal sign of acquiescence, but does start a pour*
<Mayor Coldbrew>*Aggun rises, pauses, and speaks again.* Second thought, make it two, and tell your wife I need to talk to her about some things.

<Narrator> The boat is the Iellmufe; an elven noble had left it for repairs at the dock the day the dome went up, and never came to pick it up. While the docks aren't a dry cleaner's, at a certain point measured in centuries you've got to figure the owner isn't coming back for it.
<Daeshulu> (What they don't know...is beneficial to us.)
<Muriel> (I absolutely want him to come back for it now)
<Nurusi> (Dude, where's my boat?)
<Daeshulu> (Hey, I heard Starbuck is back, and I was just...where the fuck is my boat?)
<Muriel> (the impound fees alone, tho)
<Daeshulu> Presumably we can at least vaguely pilot a boat.
<Narrator> A handful of laborers load the cargo--we say laborers, but it's honestly a handful of the younger Coldbrews.
<Daeshulu> (Muriel is riverine)
<Muriel> *Rupert, now gravy-free, is hanging from his baby bjorn*
<Narrator> The sacks of roasted coffee are heavy and bulging, each one capable of holding a human child. A large crate is wheeled onto the deck, a metallic clatter suggesting these are the tools that Aggun mentioned.
* Nurusi sniffs the bags
<Narrator> One of the Coldbrew youths clips the railing with the crate she's helping to carry, gouging the fresh paint and gold leaf ornamentation. She glances around and keeps moving.
* Daeshulu goes to lean against the boat at that spot.
<Narrator> (Oh yeah, Nurusi. That's coffee. It's an olfactory assault of espresso.)
<Narrator> (There is no smell of child, human or otherwise.)
* Nurusi whistles and looks up at the sky, pretending not to notice.
<Nurusi> (Who doesn't like the smell of coffee?)
<Muriel> (so if I ever nee to hide a bag of child...)
<Narrator> (To be fair, it would do a hell of a job covering up the scent. Maybe there'll be some hags at the market.)
* Daeshulu will help as best he's able, but that'd mostly be loading.
<Daeshulu>
<- strong like bull :p
<Narrator> Daeshulu will definitely be of assistance in moving the statuary. One is a life-sized rendition of one vain member of the Coldbrew clan or another.
<Daeshulu> (Who can tell the difference?)
<Narrator> (Eh, this one was definitely one of the stouter members. One assumes Aggun wasn't being figurative about clogging the hallways.)
<Daeshulu> (Heh. In fairness, Daeshulu is like 5'1", 200 lbs or so)
<Daeshulu> (He beefy)
* Muriel will wait for them to load up, standing near the prow
<Narrator> (That's fair. I think my character is like that, too. Oreads, dwarves, and Lashunta dudes are all like that.)
* Daeshulu is ready to set sail whenever other folks are.
<Muriel> (same)
<Nurusi> (yup)
<Mayor Coldbrew> *Aggun walks onto the deck for a minute as the loading wraps up, and looks around* IAnything I can do for you when you get back? I'll put in a good word with this...explorer thing.
<Daeshulu> You do that.
<Mayor Coldbrew> He nods. "I'll owe you one." He points to everyone. "All of you, I owe you. Except the bird, I don't think he gets a choice."
<Daeshulu> Hey, he's a very important member of this expedition.
<Muriel> He knows more spells than I do.
<Daeshulu> He's got more experience in this new world than I do.
<Muriel> Plus, he provides excellent moral support
<Mayor Coldbrew> Then you can owe him. *he starts to pull away the gangplank*
* Nurusi waves jauntily.
* Muriel waves one of Rupert's hands
<Daeshulu> (brb, please continue)
<Mayor Coldbrew> Aggun puts one hand in his pocket, and waves with the other one as the Iellmufe is cast loose
* Nurusi turns to Muriel
<Nurusi> You're driving this thing, right?
<Muriel> Let's say... yes
<Narrator> (Well someone better be piloting this thing upstream, because it won't go that way on its own.)
* Muriel takes a place at the wheel
* Nurusi nods
<Nurusi> Good. Boats are not in my wheelhouse.
<Nurusi> (eeeeeeeyyyyyy. Get it?)
<Muriel> (:VVVV I love it)
* Narrator facepalms
* Muriel pilots the boat upstream, looking out for points of interest
<Narrator> (Actually, I know this was only a handful of hours, but can we pause this here for now? I have thoughts for what to do when you get there, but it occurs to me I've put zero thought into what happens along the way and I need some time for that.)
<Daeshulu> (Sure, that's cool)
<Muriel> (we could also use this as a chance to roll survival, and explore the hex)
<Narrator> (This is true!)
<Daeshulu> (If we don't mind going slow, that works. Ostensibly, it's, I believe, a day to explore a plains hex.)
<Daeshulu> (And straight east or southeast are both plains hexes)
<Daeshulu> (There's also always the chance for random encounters.)
<Nurusi> (I'm good with whatever)
<Narrator> (Again, going upstream. I'm pretty sure you'll be taking your time regardless of intent)
<Daeshulu> (Fair, though exploring would assume we're disembarking some to get the lay of the land)
<Daeshulu> (Which is still fine)
<Narrator> (And that's fair. I feel like Aggun more or less implied he wanted the lay of the land, too.)
<Daeshulu> (Should we go ahead and roll?)
<Narrator> Yeah. I don't know the full mechanics involved here, though.
<Daeshulu> (Should be DC-17. None of us are particularly suited to this, but here goes)
<Nurusi> I'm rolling a d20 for Survival?
<Daeshulu> Add you Wisdom mod, if any
<Daeshulu> Womp Womp, 9 for me.
<Muriel> 10
<Daeshulu> If we say Zari was aiding Alicia...>.>
<Muriel> I can do zat
<Narrator> That would do it.
<Muriel> can I roll for # frogs found?
<Nurusi> Hahaha, yes, please.
<Narrator> Roll a second survival.
<Nurusi> All of us, or just Muriel?
<Narrator> Just Muriel
<Muriel> aww, no frogs for me
<Narrator> Muriel is mostly distracted by looking for frogs.
<Narrator> But her attention is split with trying to explore in general.
<Daeshulu> Maybe Rupert finds a frog
<Daeshulu> But eats it.
<Muriel> that sounds likely
<Narrator> Rupert brings you the legs.
<Narrator> ...the front ones.
<Nurusi> Also, do the location of the legs on the frog's body have any effect on your...whatever, Muriel?
<Muriel> Well, if SOMEONE had left it whole, I could have dried it that way
<Muriel> as it is now, it's only good for... a pair of earrings, perhaps?
<Muriel> maybe some light taxidermy
<Nurusi> Frog feet earrings could be...interesting.
<Muriel> What do we find in the hex, anything?
<Narrator> That will have to wait for the beginning of next session.
<Daeshulu> Heh, fair enough.
<Muriel> okie dokie
<Narrator> I have thoughts.
<Daeshulu> I think that nets us, like, 33 xp apiece? :p
<Narrator> For now, yeah. The encounter that follows may be worth a bit more.
<Daeshulu> Cool cools
