Ashnabis session 67
Summary
Session
Session date: January 30, 2022
Fair Cycle date:
Introduction
<AshnabisNarrator> Among the Aummesh, whenever there is some annoying chore to be assigned to a member of the group, or whenever children gather to decide who will be the hunter and who the prey in some game, folks turn to Di, Desi, Dif.
<AshnabisNarrator> One person, the counter, calls out a nonsense rhyme that starts, unsurprisingly, with those three words, and on each count pulls a leaf from a frond until all are gone, and a choice is thereby made.
<AshnabisNarrator> While some protest that this is random, the adjudications made by Di, Desi, Dif are treated by the reckoners as a matter agreed upon by all parties, not to be overturned. As if Coherence itself had pulled its will to end in a certain state.
<AshnabisNarrator> Of course, fern-leaves are hardly a just means of deciding weightier matters, but that doesn't keep one from wishing sometimes for a childlike means of surrendering one's choice to the universe, to trust in the Unfolding of things.
<AshnabisNarrator> And so we come to a very special episode of Ashnabis, which we call "Choices".
Balinteze tells Daifan they are leaving Kaskind
<AshnabisGM> Daifan, Balinteze asks if you can meet with them at the fort one afternoon, with some urgency.
* Daifan surely can sdo that
* Balinteze 's room is in some disarray, with their clothing and possessions and some chests lying around. You realize after a moment that they seem to be packing.
<Balinteze> Hey... Thanks for coming, I'm glad you could make it.
<Daifan> ...what's hapening?
<Balinteze> I reported back about everything that's happening with Kikhash. And my directions are to return to Taizi.
<Daifan> Oh :/
<Daifan> why?
<Balinteze> The more the authorities here look into his business, the more chance I'm uncovered. They could bring me before a Reckoner to answer as to what I know about his dealings, and a lot more could come out about me if that happens.
<Daifan> wlll, Kemai can leave, but why do *you
* have to return? :/
<Balinteze> I don't know what's going to happen with him - but it's likely that whichever way it turns out, my avenue into the inner workings of the fort is no use anymore. It could be that he's forced to leave his post here, or that no one trusts him anymore.
<Balinteze> They want to dispatch me to some other assignment. I don't know what it would be or where I would end up...
* Balinteze puts a hand on your cheek, their face full of sorrow and regret.
<Daifan> is that what you want to do?
<Daifan> They don't own you >.>
* Daifan will take their hand
* Balinteze sighs.
<Balinteze> I wish things could be different.
<Balinteze> I would ask you to come with me, but that would be selfish of me. You have a life here - I couldn't take you away from all of that. And I couldn't promise you any kind of stability or security.
<Daifan> YOu are *part* of my life here
* Balinteze gazes at you wistfully.
* Daifan looks away
<Balinteze> If I stayed... if I decided to put that behind me... all of us would still be in danger. I know too much for people to trust me roaming around freely, and eventually they would come after me.
<Balinteze> Kikhash owes me for covering for him more than once, and he knows that. But I can't expect him to put me before his own interests, or his family's safety, or anything.
<Daifan> Like you coudln't just disappear in Banei if you wanted...
<Daifan> fake your death... or ...something. YOu could
<Daifan> It's okay.
* Daifan says, sounding sorrowfully resigned
<Balinteze> My dear... I never wanted to hurt you. I don't regret what we shared together. Do you?
<Daifan> No.
<Daifan> Of course not.
* Daifan looks back up at them
<Daifan> We never said we would be enough for each other
<Balinteze> No... but you will always have a part of me, even so.
* Daifan nods, smiling slightly
<Daifan> You're leaving a hole that will be hard to fill
<Balinteze> And if I can come back someday... if I can find a way... would you still welcome me?
<Daifan> Always.
<Balinteze> Then I'll keep that hope close to my heart.
* Daifan will stand up and embrace them
* Balinteze holds you tightly
<Daifan> I know it is selfish, but I don't want you to go :(
<Daifan> I don't want you to want to go.
* Daifan sniffles
<Balinteze> Hearts are selfish things, in the end.
* Daifan nods against their shoulder
<Balinteze> I would stay if I thought I wouldn't hurt you more...
<Balinteze> I know that sounds foolish.
<Daifan> Dont say things like that.
* Balinteze gives you a kiss.
* Daifan will kiss back
<Balinteze> I'll be gone by tomorrow, so will you stay with me tonight?
* Daifan nods
* Balinteze embraces you as if they never want to let you go.
Bitsaar asks Veznara to marry him
<AshnabisGM> Veznara, you are in the garden at Ziftu's estate when a servant comes to let you know that you have a visitor.
* Balinteze is now known as Bitsaar
* Veznara goes to greet this visitor...
* Bitsaar is waiting for you, looking around at the elegant surroundings with wonder.
* Veznara smiles upon seeing him.
<Bitsaar> This place is beautiful...
<Bitsaar> <w> Not as beautiful as you, though.
* Bitsaar says with a smile
* Veznara blushes
<Veznara> <w> Darling
* Veznara looks around to be sure they're alone, and gives him a quick kiss
* Bitsaar returns the kiss
<Bitsaar> Veznara, there's something I've been meaning to ask you. Can we talk in private?
<Veznara> Certainly.
* Veznara leads him somewhere more private so they can talk
* Bitsaar will sit on a bench in the garden with you, which is quite private as far as that sort of thing goes.
* Bitsaar sits next to you, taking your hand between his big palms. He looks both nervous and excited.
* Bitsaar takes a moment as if putting his thoughts in order before he speaks.
* Veznara waits patiently, if a bit nervously...
<Bitsaar> I don't know everything about the old teachings you have in that book of yours, but I know they used to have priests marry one another, Voice to Hand.
<Bitsaar> So I wanted to ask if... if you would marry me. I know that I'm not a nobleman, or a rich man, or even a very clever man. I just know that I want to be with you forever - if you'll accept me.
* Bitsaar waits with bated breath to see what you'll say.
<Veznara> I... marry you? But... we're members of the Corps...
<Bitsaar> Are we? Do we actually share their beliefs, still?
<Bitsaar> They keep telling us not to pursue things we know in our hearts are true, and important, and turning us away... so why should we keep to their rules?
<Veznara> I... I still believe in the Ancestors.
<Veznara> I love you, and for me there is no other man.
<Bitsaar> So do I, but we both know that the Corps is not the only way to revere them and respect them.
<Bitsaar> Together we could spread the teachings about everything we've found.
<Bitsaar> Maybe others would join us, I don't know, but as long as we had each other, that would be enough.
<Veznara> So it isn't only about us - you want to start telling others what we've learned?
<Bitsaar> Yes, but I know I can't do that without you. You're much smarter than I am, and people will listen to you if you get up and speak.
<Veznara> Oh, darling... I don't know about that. You see me with eyes of love; I don't think others would see me the same way.
<Bitsaar> Do you think you can live the rest of your life and keep quiet about everything we've seen and learned? Watch as the Corps mistreats those it claims to protect, and spreads falsehoods about them? Don't we have a duty to speak, even if it's difficult?
<Veznara> Yes. But we have to be careful; and we have to be certain of what we say.
<Bitsaar> I'm certain I love you, and I'm certain we can do this together.
<Veznara> Oh, darling. I am certain of the first; but not so certain of the second.
<Bitsaar> So... is that a no?
<Bitsaar> or do you need more time to think about it?
* Veznara begins to cry
<Bitsaar> Oh... um.... don't cry?
* Bitsaar puts his arms around you.
<Veznara> I... I... love you, Bitsaar. I do.
<Veznara> And I know you're right about what we've learned. I need to prove it, but I believe in my heart that it's true.
* Bitsaar nods
<Veznara> But I... I can't do this. Not now.
<Veznara> But I don't want to lose you!
<Bitsaar> well... I'm not leaving.
<Veznara> I don't want to hurt you, either!
<Veznara> This is the sweetest, most loving thing anyone has ever offered me.
<Bitsaar> I know it's asking a lot. And if you need more time to think about it, I can wait. But how will we show something's true, unless we start talking about it? If we start to speak out, then maybe others will come forward with their own information. I think we have to have faith in what we've been discovering.
<Veznara> I know. And I want to find the truth, and make it known. But I can't abandon everyone else and everything else...
<Veznara> I don't know if I'll ever be able to .
* Bitsaar looks disappointed.
<Veznara> I'm sorry.
<Bitsaar> I see. I'll give you some space, Veznara.
* Bitsaar will reluctantly stand up.
<Veznara> Oh Bitsaar...
* Veznara reaches out for his hand
* Bitsaar takes your hand in his.
<Bitsaar> I do still love you. But maybe we need to rethink things, if you don't think you can have faith.
<Veznara> I... will think.
<Veznara> Not about us: I have no doubt about us.
* Bitsaar nods
<Veznara> But what you suggest...
<Veznara> You're right, I haven't been doing anything about that. And I should.
<Veznara> Maybe then... but no, I won't make promises I can't keep.
<Bitsaar> All right.
<Bitsaar> I've trusted you, Veznara. I don't mean about our relationship, but about learning what we've discovered. And it's cost me a great deal. I hope that you can trust me too, even if it might cost you something as well.
<Bitsaar> Take whatever time you need. I'll be waiting.
* Bitsaar will let go of your hand and depart.
* Veznara wipes away a few more tears, and broods over what he has said.
Bivizmi tries to leave under mind-control but Katenzhi prevents her
<AshnabisNarrator> Katenzhi, since returning from your trip you've been enjoying some quiet time on the new family compound with Gefraz, Bivizmi, and Divrola and little Ghesmin. The place almost qualifies as an 'estate', you figure, which is pretty different than life on a cramped boat, but it has its pleasures. You've spent some time recently picking out drapes for the house, which has been nice. Thankfully
<AshnabisNarrator> that choice was easy.
<AshnabisNarrator> This evening you and Bivizmi enjoyed a quiet glass of wine together as light rain fell, and then fell soundly asleep in the little outbuilding where Bivizmi works and lives when she's here.
<AshnabisNarrator> A time later, you are awakened rudely to the sound of clinking glass and metal down the hall. It's totally dark.
* Katenzhi blinks blearily and sits up.
<Katenzhi> Gefraz?
<AshnabisNarrator> No answer.
* Katenzhi will stand and carefully venture towards where the sound came from.
<AshnabisNarrator> The sound is coming from the area of Bivizmi's lab setup.
* Katenzhi will look in.
<AshnabisNarrator> It's still very dark, but there is a single light in the room.
<AshnabisNarrator> You come out to see Bivizmi putting vials, tools, and material into containers and packing them away.
<Katenzhi> Biv?
* NPC1 is now known as Bivizmi
* Bivizmi is dressed in a dashi. She doesn't even really look up when you enter.
<Katenzhi> What are you doing?
* Bivizmi continues to work.
<Bivizmi> It's what I need for the work. I need to go.
* Bivizmi 's voice sounds flat and far away.
<Katenzhi> Go where? Right now?
<Katenzhi> Are you ok?
<Bivizmi> This is what is for the best. For her and for everyone.
<Katenzhi> Her?
<Bivizmi> I have to go. This is the next step.
* Katenzhi will put a hand on her arm.
<Katenzhi> Biv, talk to me.
* Bivizmi barely reacts when you touch her, and continues working.
* Katenzhi will take her hands, not forcefully, but attempting to stop her.
<Katenzhi> Are you having a vision?
* Bivizmi pulls away from you - do you want to stop her forcibly?
<Katenzhi> (Not right at the moment)
<Katenzhi> Where do you have to go?
<Bivizmi> She needs me.
* Bivizmi says, barely pausing.
<Katenzhi> ...who?
* Bivizmi doesn't respond.
<Katenzhi> Biv, you're having a vision. It's ok. Just relax, it will be over soon...
* Bivizmi starts gathering up some clothes and personal supplies.
<Bivizmi> All right.
* Bivizmi says, continuing to pack.
<Katenzhi> Biv, who is calling you? Answer me.
<Bivizmi> My lady.
<Katenzhi> ...
<Katenzhi> Sashni Ula.
<Katenzhi> It's her, isn't it?
<AshnabisNarrator> No response.
<Katenzhi> (Is there any fos around?)
<AshnabisNarrator> (you are literally in the laboratory of a fos maker)
<Katenzhi> (Right.)
* Katenzhi will grab some and attempt to cast hold person.
<AshnabisNarrator> OK, go ahead.
<Katenzhi> d20+19
<Katenzhi> !roll 1d20+19
* Daifan rolls for Katenzhi: [ 1d20+19 ] getting [ 12 ] which, after the modifier [ 19 ] totals [ 31 ].
<Katenzhi> (will save)
<AshnabisNarrator> !roll 1d20+6
* Daifan rolls for AshnabisNarrator: [ 1d20+6 ] getting [ 20 ] which, after the modifier [ 6 ] totals [ 26 ].
<AshnabisNarrator> (take that, you stupid ... girlfriend)
<Katenzhi> (Does she react at all? Or just keep doing what she was doing?)
* Bivizmi just continues as if you weren't even there.
* Katenzhi will try again.
<Katenzhi> !roll 1d20+19
* Daifan rolls for Katenzhi: [ 1d20+19 ] getting [ 5 ] which, after the modifier [ 19 ] totals [ 24 ].
<AshnabisNarrator> !roll 1d20+6
* Daifan rolls for AshnabisNarrator: [ 1d20+6 ] getting [ 18 ] which, after the modifier [ 6 ] totals [ 24 ].
<Katenzhi> Fuck it.
* Katenzhi will grab her
<Katenzhi> Biv, snap out of it...
<AshnabisNarrator> As you do so, Bivizmi's effigy, Vuchu, comes into the room, carrying a full bag of something.
<Katenzhi> C'mon, Biv, you're stronger than this.
* AshnabisNarrator is now known as Vuchu
<Vuchu> What are you doing? Mistress!
* Vuchu says with alarm.
<Vuchu> (if you want to grapple Bivizmi you can try that)
<Katenzhi> !roll 1d20+8
* Daifan rolls for Katenzhi: [ 1d20+8 ] getting [ 5 ] which, after the modifier [ 8 ] totals [ 13 ].
* Bivizmi manages to pull away from you.
* Vuchu comes to try to get in between you and Bivizmi, squeaking in alarm.
* Katenzhi begins tearing up and her voice cracks.
<Katenzhi> Biv please!!!
<Bivizmi> This is for the best.
* Bivizmi 's voice still sounds flat and distant, and you can't believe these are her own words.
* Katenzhi will desperately grab more fos and cast dispel magic
<Katenzhi> !roll 1d20+19
* Daifan rolls for Katenzhi: [ 1d20+19 ] getting [ 1 ] which, after the modifier [ 19 ] totals [ 20 ].
<Katenzhi> !roll 1d20+14
* Daifan rolls for Katenzhi: [ 1d20+14 ] getting [ 5 ] which, after the modifier [ 14 ] totals [ 19 ].
<Katenzhi> What the... fuck is going on...
* Bivizmi is unaffected
<Vuchu> Yes, what?
* Katenzhi will look at Vuchu
* Katenzhi will grab the bag from them.
<Vuchu> (ok, you can do that with little difficulty)
<Vuchu> Hey!
<Katenzhi> (What's in it?)
<Vuchu> You look inside and there are various alchemical tools and things, specialized stuff, as well as some vials of pale oracle.
<Vuchu> Give that back! She needs it for our trip!
<Katenzhi> You care about your mistress, right? You don't want anything bad to happen to her?
<Vuchu> Of course not!
<Katenzhi> Then listen to me. She's under a spell. We need to stop her.
* Vuchu pauses, as if uncertain how to interpret this.
<Vuchu> How?
<Katenzhi> Go get help. Get Gefraz. And find some rope. I'm going to make sure she doesn't leave.
* Vuchu runs off, still uncertain what to do, but obedient.
<Vuchu> (ok what are you going to do in the meantime?)
* Katenzhi will attempt to cast web. Maybe a more physical approach will work. :P
<Katenzhi> !roll 1d20+19
* Daifan rolls for Katenzhi: [ 1d20+19 ] getting [ 8 ] which, after the modifier [ 19 ] totals [ 27 ].
<Bivizmi> !roll 1d20+3
* Daifan rolls for Bivizmi: [ 1d20+3 ] getting [ 16 ] which, after the modifier [ 3 ] totals [ 19 ].
<Bivizmi> (what's my save on this?)
<Katenzhi> (...17...)
* Vuchu is now known as AshnabisNarrator
<AshnabisNarrator> OK, the room is completely filled with sticky webs. Bivizmi can still move around, but there's no way out of the room.
* Bivizmi 's packing efforts are frustrated for the time being.
* Katenzhi will stay there and keep watch over her in case she tries to leave.
<AshnabisNarrator> A short time later, Vuchu returns with Gefraz in tow. You're not sure which one of them is more confused.
* Bitsaar is now known as Gefraz
<Katenzhi> She... we need to stop her from leaving. She's under a spell of some kind.
<Gefraz> What's going on? :o
<Gefraz> Okay, what do you need me to do?
<Katenzhi> I... I don't know... nothing I'm doing is working!
* Katenzhi will try to dispel again.
<Katenzhi> !roll 1d20+19
* Daifan rolls for Katenzhi: [ 1d20+19 ] getting [ 13 ] which, after the modifier [ 19 ] totals [ 32 ].
<Katenzhi> !roll 1d20+14
* Daifan rolls for Katenzhi: [ 1d20+14 ] getting [ 3 ] which, after the modifier [ 14 ] totals [ 17 ].
<Katenzhi> It's like there's some kind of... force that won't let me stop her!
<Gefraz> Umm... well... I don't know, Kat, what if we let her go and try to follow her?
<Katenzhi> No! We can't let her go to them!
<Gefraz> Them who?
<Katenzhi> ...
<Katenzhi> It... it's complicated...
<Katenzhi> I will explain but... not now. Right now we need to stop her.
<Katenzhi> Please...
<Gefraz> I'll try, but I don't want to hurt her...
* Gefraz will try to make his way to Bivizmi and grab her.
<Katenzhi> Just hold her. I'll try to tie her up.
* Gefraz holds onto her as best as he can
* Katenzhi will attempt /me will attempt to get the rope around her and tie her up.
<AshnabisNarrator> All right, between the two of you you manage to get her tied up, although she's none too happy about it.
<Bivizmi> Please ... please untie me. I need to go ...
* Katenzhi breathes a sigh of relief.
<Katenzhi> Biv... listen, I'm not going to let them hurt you. Not ever again.
* Katenzhi turns to Gefraz.
<Katenzhi> I'm so sorry. Thank you.
<Gefraz> It's fine, I'm glad I could help, but... what is going on?
<Katenzhi> So... there's this group of people. The ones that live where the pale oracle grows...
* Katenzhi will explain the situation with the cult in broad strokes.
* Gefraz frowns
<Gefraz> (are you telling him they were responsible for killing Bivizmi before? or leaving that detail out?)
<Katenzhi> I... I should have told you sooner.
<Katenzhi> (I'll tell him.)
<Katenzhi> You've been so good to us and... I'm so sorry...
<Gefraz> I don't understand. I mean, I do, but I don't. If they wanted her dead so much, why didn't they try to kill her again? Why lure her someplace with a bunch of supplies and stuff, whatever all this is, if they just wanted to murder her?
<Katenzhi> I don't know exactly, but I think they want her for something. Some spell or ritual. I'm gonna find out. I'm gonna stop them. I need to go find Jimba and the others.
<Gefraz> and, look - don't worry about me right now. I will do whatever I can to help.
* Katenzhi will take his hand.
<Katenzhi> Thank you.
<Katenzhi> I... I never meant to put you in danger.
<Katenzhi> I'm gonna fix this.
<Gefraz> It's all right. Hey... what are family for if we're not supposed to help one another with problems?
* Katenzhi tears up again at that.
* Katenzhi throws her arms around Gefraz and hugs him.
* Gefraz hugs you back.
<Katenzhi> Thank you.
<AshnabisNarrator> (ok, so what now?)
<Katenzhi> I... I need to go. Can you... look after her?
<Katenzhi> Just... make sure she doesn't leave.
<Gefraz> Of course. I'll stay here with her until you get back.
<Katenzhi> Thank you.
* Katenzhi will give him a kiss on the cheek, grab up what fos she can, and head out.
Kikhash makes his confession to Junan
<AshnabisNarrator> Junan, the ethics of simply tossing someone overboard while at sea are not a traditional part of envoy training, much to your dismay on the way back to Kaskind with Zefa hauled on deck, wet, cold, but definitely still breathing. You made your deal with Obin, preventing bloodshed, but now you have a mess to deal with.
<AshnabisNarrator> A body overboard and never found again would certainly solve a number of problems, not least those of your friend (you think?), ally (you hope?) Kikhash of the Urdondu, who, with his family, you have rescued and returned to the city. The trip back, he's sullen and silent, although he did glance over at you once and makes a hand gesture to indicate 'not now'.
<AshnabisNarrator> When you leave Kikhash and his family at the port with their goods, he just wanders by and whispers, "I'll be by. Soon." And then he, Zesel and the boys head home to re-unpack their things and, perhaps, resume some sort of life?
<AshnabisNarrator> A couple days later, in the evening, there is a sharp knock at your door, just as you were getting ready for bed.
* Junan will answer the door
<Junan> It's quite late you know
<AshnabisNarrator> You are not too surprised to see that it is Kikhash.
* Bivizmi is now known as Kikhash
* Kikhash looks worn-out and tired. His eyes are red and his garb, a plain dashi, is unusually disheveled.
<Kikhash> I'm sorry.
<Kikhash> Can I come in?
* Junan nods and steps aside to let him in
* Junan will quickly fill two cups with wine and hand one the Kikhash
* Kikhash takes one and takes a long drink.
<Kikhash> I suppose you'll be wanting some answers. I suppose you deserve them.
<Junan> Its better than continuing to call you a co-conspirator
<Kikhash> I know you have no reason to believe anything I tell you. I know that. I should count myself lucky that you didn't just throw us all overboard. Or just ignore my message in the office.
<Kikhash> Thank you for that.
<Junan> I'm a poor killer... not really fit for that kind of job. Mostly I prefer people to live.
* Kikhash nods.
<Junan> So out with it. Am I going to need to fetch a third skin?
<Kikhash> Yes. And then, sit and listen. You need answers before you decide ... or we decide ... what happens next.
* Junan gestures to the spare wineskin hanging on a hook
* Kikhash takes a drink and starts his story.
<Kikhash> I guess I've known for a while that Zesel was more involved with the things the Fands were up to than I was willing to admit to myself. You don't act as the head of security for a family like that without knowing some things.
<Kikhash> But she's my wife, and she's saved my own life more times than I can count. That has to matter.
<Kikhash> You know, I think, that I'm a revenant. After I died, I began sleepwalking. And more. Attacking others in my sleep. Attacking Zesel, even. I couldn't help it. I still can't. All these years, she's been there for me. Every time I've bruised her by accident, or something ... and she just nods and acknowledges that that's the way of the world.
<Kikhash> That her job is to protect me. Protect *me* - once a sentinel myself!
<Kikhash> I owe her ... I owe her so much, Junan.
<Kikhash> But that debt comes with a price.
* Kikhash pauses and takes another long drink, then resumes.
<Kikhash> I guess the old man, Orfiz Fand, has been sick for a long time, and now nearing death, mostly unconscious most of the time now. Not many people know that.
* Junan sits quietly listening to his story
<Kikhash> And so the children have been fighting. Hidaros, the daughter, is married to Usuf Rorifti, the scholar. And they've been working against Rolal, the heir, for a while. This is what Zefa was talking about, at the tribunal.
<Kikhash> Obin, the mystic, is or was Usuf's apprentice. And she was the one they sent to Charadip, during the war. That's how she got the Petrel.
<Kikhash> Even then, I was compromised. I see that now. When Zefa left my name off the list for the kelta, I could have fought to get back on. But I didn't - I trusted that you would do well at the negotiations. And you did. But I shouldn't have put you in that position.
<Kikhash> I'm sorry for that.
<Kikhash> When Charadip agreed to terms against the pirates, I know you were surprised - many were. I've come to see that was when Usuf and Zefa really took over. The Cormorant pirates were too chaotic, too likely to turn on us.
<Kikhash> When your friend took care of Yeggun ... well ... that's a confidential matter. But suffice to say that this was the end of that strategy. That and, well ... the tribunal.
* Kikhash says somewhat cryptically.
<Kikhash> I thought that letting Zefa off from further punishment, banishing her, would deal with the problem. To keep Zesel from any scrutiny. To put an end to it.
<Kikhash> I'm ashamed to admit that was in my head when we did that. I betrayed the General to avoid embarrassment to myself, or harm to my wife.
<Kikhash> What she said at the tribunal - even as she said it, I knew it was all true. That she, and Usuf and Hidaros, they were behind the war, or at least encouraging it to the benefit of the family. And that Zesel knew, and said nothing to protect me.
<Kikhash> All these years, she's been protecting me ... and she did it again. For me, all for me. So I could keep my honor and my station.
* Kikhash is practically weeping now as he extends his glass for another.
* Junan fills his cup
<Kikhash> And so even as I couldn't stand that she was right, when Zefa came to me with her blackmail, I knew I needed to leave. For all our sakes.
<Kikhash> I couldn't avoid taking responsibility for everything that had happened. And so Zesel and I and the boys, we left with them, maybe not willingly, but ... acknowledging that there was no other choice.
<Kikhash> And now here we are. Zefa is in chains, and it's all going to come out.
<Kikhash> I know that bringing her back was the right decision. The decision the General would want. She surely has information. And then I'm done. You know that, right?
<Junan> You may be being a little to harsh on yourself, Kikhash. You were in an impossible position. Divided loyalties.
<Kikhash> I'm supposed to be loyal to the General. She values it, more than almost anything.
<Junan> One has loyalty to thier family too. Our lineages are sacred. I'm not excusing the choices you made, but I can understand why you made them.
* Kikhash nods.
<Kikhash> Thank you for that kindness.
<Kikhash> But it won't matter to the General. I was her trusted diplomat and negotiator, and my wife was implicated in treason.
<Junan> Oh I think that life for you is over.
<Junan> but people have many lives these days
<Junan> Is Zesel going to be forthcoming or will she stay loyal to the Fands?
<Kikhash> The Fands - that's not just one thing, not anymore. There are factions, right? The old man's illness allowed all this to happen.
<Kikhash> She will not be loyal to Hidaros and Usuf, and of course not to Zefa.
<Kikhash> But what that means for her, in the family, I don't know.
<Kikhash> We may be heading back to Daligash regardless.
<Kikhash> I can't imagine Jaigadu will have much time for me, now that my actions have compromised the kelta even further. We could have built something great here. But now all people will remember are murders and treason.
<Junan> Here's what I think... I think, despite what has happened, you have earned the opportunity to be candid, both you and your wife. Once everything is out, it would be best if you found a different life. I'm not going to tell you what that will be, be it back to Daligash, or someplace else, but make it away from the Fort.
* Kikhash nods.
<Junan> Those directly involved will reap their consequences and this mess can be put behind.
<Junan> That is what I will push for, if you are willing.
<Junan> I'm really bad at holding grudges
<Kikhash> You will have to denounce me to the General. To call me a traitor to the envoys and the Fort both. To take the glory for bringing me back.
<Junan> That would have to be the narrative, not that I relish in things such as glory.
<Junan> but you and your family would be able to leave and live
* Kikhash nods.
<Junan> If Zefa had just done that, she wouldnt be where she is now.
<Junan> Is that something you are willing to accept?
<Kikhash> Yes ... under one condition.
* Kikhash takes a long drink.
<Kikhash> I need you to earn my job, Junan. You must replace me. The general needs men like you. And I need someone who will understand ... some of the things going on, beyond what people know publicly.
<Kikhash> Kaskind is not a good place. Ashnabis is not a good place. It is an awful place made tolerable by those willing to live in the muck and corruption.
<Junan> If that's what it take, then I'll do what I can to achieve it.
<Kikhash> I will ensure that the information you need comes directly to you, then.
<Junan> What you said about Kaskind and Ashnabis is true, but it is also good place if you make it one, at the same time.
<Kikhash> It can be a home. A creaky home with rats in the cellar, but home nonetheless.
* Kikhash nods in agreement.
<Kikhash> You'll do fine. Stay loyal to Ghurtai and she'll take care of you. She likes you. Stay clear of me. Say what you need to say.
<Junan> The advice is appreciated, but unnecessary. I've had excellent mentors.
* Kikhash chuckles.
<Kikhash> I hope so.
<Junan> and maybe someday in Daligash, you'll see a minstral with a crooked smile, and you can buy them a drink.
* Junan finishes his wine
<Kikhash> I should go. I have a resignation letter to prepare.
* Junan will stand and let him out
<Kikhash> Thank you, Junan.
<Junan> Take care
Dekhesh gives Jimba an ultimatum
<AshnabisGM> Jimba, things have settled down a little - not so much as to be boring, but at least enough to allow you a chance to catch your breath and focus on aspects of your business, and your personal life, that have been neglected of late.
<AshnabisGM> On that note, you have made time for a lunch date with Dekhesh. As you've often done before, you will meet a little way out of town and find a pleasant spot to moor the boat for a picnic meal.
* Dekhesh has his hair down, in a loose braid over his shoulder, and wears a simple green dashi with a belt of copper beads.
* Jimba smiles at him, and is probably himself wearing nicer-than-usual clothes, but will have set down his big new hat.
<Dekhesh> Aw, the hat is so stylish though :)
<Dekhesh> It really completes the look.
<Jimba> It's also a bit heavy. I'm kind of regretting it a little, but I felt like I should have something that makes me stand out.
<Jimba> I defeated a pirate admiral, you know.
* Dekhesh smiles at that.
<Dekhesh> You did! Which was a relief, let me tell you.
* Jimba gives a mixed smile.
<Dekhesh> And I'm glad you're doing so well for yourself.
<Jimba> It had to be done.
* Dekhesh nods
<Jimba> And you? How're you doing?
<Dekhesh> Not bad. Working on weapons training with some folks in Banei who are interested in it - for self-defense, of course.
<Dekhesh> I know there's been so much going on, I'm sure it's been a lot to deal with. But I was hoping to talk to you...
<Jimba> Yeah?
<Dekhesh> Well... I care about you, Jimba, and I'd like for us to be able to be together. But I don't want to be a secret.
<Dekhesh> If we're going to continue to be together, I want us to be able to be open about our relationship. And if that's not something you can accept, or you don't want to deal with the consequences, I fully understand that, but I have to break this off.
* Dekhesh says firmly but with a nervous haste, as if trying to get the words out before he thinks better of them.
* Jimba nods thoughtfully.
<Jimba> That's not a simple thing to ask.
<Jimba> Which I know you know.
<Dekhesh> I know. I know it doesn't just affect you, but your sister, and your family, and ... I understand what it means.
<Jimba> Would you think me a terrible coward if I said I couldn't?
<Dekhesh> No.
* Jimba lets out a long sigh.
<Dekhesh> But I guess I just feel like, how can I argue for rights for my people, and at the same time be... something shameful.
<Jimba> I can't really argue with that.
<Dekhesh> And you don't have to make up your mind right now, if it's something you need to think about, or talk to them about.
<Jimba> I *also
* want rights for your people, but I'm still...defeating Yeggun...people still see me as an outsider.
<Dekhesh> I've been patient before, I can be patient again if you need some time.
<Jimba> And while I *want
* to change some of their norms, people also resent it.
<Jimba> I worry I wouldn't be as helpful for you and your people if others stopped doing business with me.
<Dekhesh> Well... maybe that's not a bad thing? I don't know how to be anything else but an outsider, but I have a community anyway, and we do all right. And if you wanted to join that community, I'd fight just as hard for your right to be part of it.
* Jimba smiles sadly.
<Jimba> I appreciate that.
<Jimba> But I'm not corpseborn. Not budal, at least.
<Jimba> I mean, I'm not hedal, either.
* Dekhesh nods
<Dekhesh> By making room for people who aren't either thing, maybe it helps break down those divisions more.
* Jimba nods.
<Jimba> I know I've said this before, but let me think about it. I'll need to talk to my sister and my cousin.
<Dekhesh> Of course.
<Jimba> I wish I could give you a better answer.
<Dekhesh> I'd rather have an honest answer that you thought about than a hasty answer that you might regret later because you felt pushed into it.
<Dekhesh> Take the time you need.
<Jimba> Well, come to think of it, I mostly just need to speak to my cousin. Llillilli will just say people can fuck off.
* Dekhesh chuckles at that.
* Jimba smiles and nods.
<Dekhesh> She doesn't seem like one who's very concerned with what people think, it's true.
<Jimba> Well...she has that luxury.
<Jimba> She has people around her who can be concerned for her.
* Dekhesh nods
<Dekhesh> For what it's worth... you have people who are looking out for you too. And I think your reputation is growing stronger - maybe strong enough that you don't have to worry as much. But I don't know all of your business.
* Jimba nods.
<Jimba> I'm not saying no.
* Dekhesh nods
<Jimba> I just need to...consider.
<Jimba> I'm sorry.
<Jimba> My heart says, "Say yes!"
<Dekhesh> I know. I just wanted you to know that... whatever you decide, it doesn't affect my friendship with you. We'll still deal with you and I'm not going to go and turn everyone against you or something.
<Jimba> But I have other things to think about than just what I want.
* Jimba smiles sadly.
<Jimba> I appreciate that.
<Jimba> I want to help, and I want to be with you, and I *really* want to be able to do both of those things.
* Dekhesh smiles a bit at that
<Dekhesh> It's hard, wanting so much.
* Jimba raises an eyebrow.
<Dekhesh> Heh... I didn't mean that the way you're taking it :)
* Jimba grins.
<Dekhesh> although I didn't not mean that, I suppose. but ... I just meant, sometimes the things we hope for are more than one person, or one lifetime, can manage.
* Jimba nods.
<Jimba> Well, all we can do is the best we can.
<Dekhesh> Sometimes we can't even manage that. We're just human, after all. But we manage somehow.
* Jimba nods, smiles, and will lean in to kiss him.
* Dekhesh kisses you back.
<Dekhesh> Well... we still have all this food for a lunch, we shouldn't let it go to waste :)
* Jimba will happily dig into the lunch.
King Whuthe offers Llillilli an opportunity to return, but at a steep price
<AshnabisNarrator> Lllillilli, since your voyage on the Fortune to help retrieve that bitch Zefa, it's been pretty quiet on the home front. You and Thelef have been enjoying some time with the younglings.
<AshnabisNarrator> One morning you are just lounging about when there is a rapping at the door.
* Dekhesh is now known as Thelef
* Llillilli will get it
<AshnabisNarrator> You open the door and see Fifelus standing there.
* Kikhash is now known as Fifelus
* Fifelus looks stoic in their full dress armor of lithus and bronze.
<Fifelus> Honored Thelef, Honored Lllillilli.
<Llillilli> Hello...
<Fifelus> I come with news from the court.
<Fifelus> The King has asked me to bring you to court for an audience.
* Llillilli blinks.
<Llillilli> Oh.
<Llillilli> Alright
* Llillilli looks over at Thelef.
<Thelef> Do you know what it's about?
* Thelef asks curiously
<Fifelus> I do not. But it was not phrased as a request.
* Llillilli frowns.
<Llillilli> Hm.
<Thelef> Give us a few moments? We'll get ready to go...
<Fifelus> Of course. I'll wait outside.
<Llillilli> Something has happened.
* Llillilli says when they are gone.
<Thelef> I think it must have. Maybe there's been some developments...
<Llillilli> Not good ones.
<Llillilli> I will leave a note for Jimba. In case we don't come back.
<Llillilli> (s/note/message. I'm illiterate :v)
* Llillilli frowns more deeply.
<Thelef> We don't know that... but all right. I don't think that's very likely, but if it makes you feel better.
* Thelef puts an arm around you.
<Llillilli> It doesn't seem like they will let us stop to tell him, so...
<Thelef> We can ask.
<Thelef> I'll leave a note.
<Llillilli> THank you...
* Thelef will jot down a quick message indicating where we've gone
* Llillilli doesn't really have much in the way of packing or whatever to do
<Thelef> Whatever happens, I'll be there - we will find our way through it.
* Llillilli nods stoicly
* Thelef will get a few things together, and accompany you when you're ready.
<AshnabisNarrator> All right, you gather your things and head off with Fifelus.
<AshnabisNarrator> The trip to Sulise by sea is a quick one. Your mind is racing throughout - what does the king want and why in this manner?
<AshnabisNarrator> Fifelus is with you the whole time, ensuring that you are delivered directly to the court, with only a brief stop to drop off your belongings at Thelef's chambers.
* Whuthe is seated in his throne room, surrounded by some of his most trusted thorns guarding the exits.
* Llillilli glances around warily
* Whuthe is inscrutable, his orange/blue crests high atop his head, but his eyes perhaps looking weary.
<Whuthe> Young and honored Thelef and Llillilli, children of humanity. In your absence I have been sad of heart.
<Whuthe> Welcome back.
<Llillilli> (are there any solars here?)
<AshnabisNarrator> (nope)
<Llillilli> Why have you summoned us?
<Whuthe> I have seen that you have been very busy since we spoke. Many sing the power of the selleluf, and unless I miss my mark, your voices lie behind them.
<Whuthe> Very clever. And effective. You have many allies in these halls, and many more who do not know what to think.
<Whuthe> But Sulise has only one throne and only one leader. So a resolution must be had.
<Llillilli> A resolution?
<Whuthe> You will be pleased to hear that you have won.
<Whuthe> The solars have agreed to remove their restriction on the pfullaes for humans. And to acknowledge you as the selleluf, first of your kind, though perhaps not last, to be known to hold that esteemed role.
<Whuthe> Fellis, needless to say, is not fully pleased, but their pleasure is not my concern. My concern is the peace and wellbeing of this kingdom.
<Whuthe> It is my hope that you will accept the terms that have been proposed, in exchange for this.
<Llillilli> What are they?
<Whuthe> I would ask the two of you to move to Sulise, as a show of your loyalty to the People and our traditions.
<Whuthe> Whether you would make your home here, at court, or in Pashas, I do not mind. But I would have my counsellors close to me, in my kingdom.
<Llillilli> Oh.
* Thelef looks over at you.
<Llillilli> Pfaeshes... is not so far.
<Whuthe> I have spoken to the Heptachei, and he has agreed to this, if it is your wish to not be here. I can understand that to be among both humans and hith could be of value and comfort.
<Whuthe> I know you have a life in Kaskind, and I know that what I ask of you is not easy.
<Llillilli> My brother is what matters most to me there. And he has a boat.
<Llillilli> Thelef...
<Llillilli> What do you think?
<Whuthe> I know that you and your brother have many adventures together. I cannot have an adventurer as my selleluf.
<Whuthe> You could visit, of course. But your place must be here, among the People.
<Llillilli> What does that mean, adventurer?
<Whuthe> Sailing off on trips here and there. To Sednidze. To fight pirates. Whatever it is that you do.
<Llillilli> If you mean I should not work for the fort or the registry that is... not an issue.
<Whuthe> I don't really understand all the intricacies of your employment. But it would need to cease.
<Whuthe> And I know that you both have family over there.
<Llillilli> (how does Thelef seem to be taking it?)
* Thelef seems cautiously optimistic.
<Llillilli> That seems agreeable to me
<Thelef> We could keep our ties with our families and friends on land.
<Whuthe> I know if you were to have children - that would cause complexities with travelling to court. With breathing and such.
<Thelef> The humans on Ruur seem to manage - if we needed to, we could stay there?
<Whuthe> I know that Pfaeshes is a different sort of place for a human ... but I have always thought it a fine place, also. A place where two peoples can live harmoniously - in the past, and perhaps once again.
<Whuthe> There will be struggles, I acknowledge. Mistrust, to be sure.
<Llillilli> That would be a wonderful goal.
<Whuthe> The solars have agreed to this, but not without some griping.
<Llillilli> (the harmony not the mistrust )
<Whuthe> They were very firm on this point.
<Whuthe> To have your, ah, power base, outside the kingdom is intolerable to them.
<Whuthe> But I also know that to be here, in Sulise, invites them to scrutinize your actions still further.
<Llillilli> my.. power base?
* Llillilli shrugs.
<Whuthe> You do not see it as such? I know your dear husband does.
<Llillilli> I don't have anything to hide
<Llillilli> I don't really think about it that way.
<Whuthe> Hmmm.
<Thelef> If people attribute power to a person, then whether they wish it or not, they have been granted power.
* Thelef says with a bit of a shrug.
<Whuthe> There is another thing to be discussed.
<Whuthe> It is your mentor.
<Llillilli> Shulilae?
<Whuthe> Indeed.
<Whuthe> They are not greatly beloved of the solars - and, in truth, they do not much love me. You must surely know this.
<Whuthe> They do not come here, have not come here for many suns.
<Llillilli> That is their choice.
<Whuthe> They are ... shulli, heretics, in the eyes of many.
<Whuthe> So that tie, it could no longer be one to be kept firmly. Your spawn could not be raised in their pools. I will not go so far as to ban you from ever speaking to them - that is not something I could do, even if I wanted to. But you would need to understand that no longer could you cultivate and nurture that relationship.
<Llillilli> Why?
<Whuthe> We cannot have you off to Kaskind every week to visit a heretic.
<Whuthe> The solars , well Fellis, specifically, would see this as dangerous. And I concede, I see their point.
<Llillilli> And if I refuse this, then what
<Whuthe> Then we return to the state we were in before. No pfullaes for your people, and so Liwhis, too, would never be able to return here, being still a child.
<Thelef> King Whuthe, thank you for this offer. May we take time to discuss it privately?
<Llillilli> Even if we accept all else.
<Whuthe> It is so.
<Llillilli> That's ridiculous.
<Whuthe> Honored Thelef, you may have time. But I need an answer before you return to Kaskind.
<Thelef> I understand, of course.
<Llillilli> Fellis doesn't get to dictate who I choose as my friends, my family.
<Whuthe> They do not. But they do get to speak to many matters that concern this kingdom.
<Whuthe> And so you are faced with a choice. I know that.
<Thelef> Llillilli, can we talk about it, before we decide?
<Llillilli> (q) fine.
* Thelef will take you aside for a private conversation.
<Llillilli> This is stupid. It is only spite!! They only want to cause pain. They never cared about Shulilae before. They never even mentioned them.
<Thelef> This could be a huge opportunity for all hithkindred, not just us. To let Liwhis advance and continue his training as a solar... to show that we can be a part of this kingdom at all levels.
<Thelef> But I know that Shulilae has been a family member to you, and I don't want to take that away from you.
<Llillilli> They can't *stop* Liwhis from training with Llaelaesi now.
<Thelef> So if you choose to reject this offer... I'll stand with you. We will continue as we have been. Some solars will still train and do ceremonies with our kind, and maybe... gradually... we can find a way to change things.
<Llillilli> They know they can't win and so they want to stop the fight, but not without a little bit of cruelty for its own sake
<Thelef> And you're probably right - Fellis sought an excuse to do an injury to you, in this gesture. The question is, is accepting that injury worth the other benefits?
<Llillilli> The sun shines on all of us. And that includes Shulilae.
* Thelef nods
<Llillilli> This cannot be stopped.
<Thelef> Then we'll continue as we have been. The tide comes in whether the sailor wishes it or not. Change happens regardless.
<Llillilli> And I won't be a puppet or a... what is the word.
<Llillilli> Someone who is used.
* Llillilli is too angry for vocabulary.
* Thelef nods
<Thelef> Very well. Then let's not wait any longer - we can let the king know of our decision.
<Llillilli> Yes.
* Thelef will accompany you back to speak with Whuthe once more.
<Whuthe> So ... you have talked?
<Llillilli> Yes.
<Thelef> King Whuthe, your offer is thoughtful and generous. We would like to continue being a part of your court and your kingdom, as we have done before. But... we cannot accept a full relocation at this time.
<Whuthe> I see.
<Llillilli> I will not disavow Shulilae.
<Whuthe> Honored child Llillilli ... I admire your loyalty and your firm steadfastness, even as I am sorrowful.
<Whuthe> I would wish it were different.
<Llillilli> All else I would accept, gladly. BUt that... that 'condition' tells me all I need to know. That Fellis knows this cannot be stopped, and wishes only to hurt me in what small way they can and still have their dignity.
<Thelef> Perhaps one day, things will be different.
<Whuthe> Perhaps. I think I will not be there to see that day.
<Llillilli> They *will*.
<Whuthe> Go, then, and know that in my heart I still hold you dear.
<Whuthe> Fifelus will escort you back to Kaskind.
<Thelef> Thank you. We will continue to work to unite our people in what ways we can.
Solos
Junan comforts Daifan
* Daifan will show up at Junan's place late the next evening and see if he is home
* Junan is home idly struming his lute
* Daifan will slip inside and come sit beside him, then
* Daifan will just listen to him play for a bit
<Junan> why hello... been an interesting few days. How are you doing?
<Daifan> Right now, I am glad that you are here.
* Daifan answers after a moment, leaning against Junan
<Daifan> and you?
<Junan> Trying to figure that out... just walking back through the last few days... trying to see if I should have done things different.
<Junan> Its a wasteful indulgence really
<Daifan> is it?
<Daifan> isn't that how were supposed to learn?
* Daifan says, but maybe with a trace of bitterness
<Junan> A yes, lessons to tailor our next choices, or regrets to colour future decisions.
<Junan> I didnt do it for me
* Daifan nods
<Junan> and I did... some of it
<Junan> enough of that... I am here now for your comfort if you desire it.
* Daifan smiles
<Daifan> Thank you.
<Junan> I can just play and sing a soft tune
<Daifan> I would like that. But... let me let go of some of the things in my mind first
<Daifan> I don't know if you have talked To Kikhash yet...
<Junan> I have
<Daifan> Balinteze is gine though.
<Daifan> It wasn't safe for them, with everything that was happening.
<Junan> A reality that I cannot change
* Daifan nods
<Junan> even if I wish it were not true
<Junan> I'm glad they're safe
<Daifan> yes :/
<Daifan> It may contribure to.... whatever messes you are left with.
<Junan> Kikhash and thier family will be leaving as well, in disgrace.
* Daifan nods
<Junan> Its the best I could do for them.
<Junan> I don't think Balinteze's absence will be of much concern
* Daifan nods
<Daifan> that would be fortunate
<Daifan> Maybe it wont matter if Kikhash has accepted disgrace
<Daifan> okay.
<Daifan> Now I can put it aside and just be here with you.
* Junan plays softly
<Junan> I'll bring you what comfort I may
