Ashnabis session 57
Summary
Session
Session date: August 1, 2021
Fair Cycle date:
Introduction
<AshnabisNarrator> Death is a continuing transformation, an Unfolding, just as the flower blooms or the cloud Coheres. It is our peculiar Kind, as humans, that we are not merely one Kind, but six, our warm bodies transformed to abas, bubun, shoror, ula, or aidastu.
<AshnabisNarrator> There is not one ending, then, but many. A place in the Unfolding is not fixed, but is an ongoing process, whose endpoint is foreordained for none. So it is that human Kinds are like the Coherence itself, self-created and eternal.
<AshnabisNarrator> As Zunuga herself taught us, death need no longer be an unmastered mystery. Just as we plant a field or build a wall, we are given tools to control the Unfolding of the human. Rejoice, then, and weep not, O ye servants of the body, but pick up your tools and work!
<AshnabisNarrator> - Losoke of Ivos, Introduction, The Working of the Body under the New Model
<AshnabisNarrator> Despite the words of the Hand Losoke and so many others over the years, a death always brings a sombre moment to a community. Some deaths. like the death of Imperial Princess Galdai Ebesnata of Taizi last week, send a ripple across many nations.
<AshnabisNarrator> Though not mourned by all, Galdai's presence here in Kaskind stood, in a way, to attest that this place is worthy even of the esteemed lords of the oldest Omban lineages, and as a sign of what the Unfolding may have for this small colony. The General has ensured that every honor is extended to the Princess, now Ancestor, and her family.
<AshnabisNarrator> Word also comes of a far less natural death, that of Sulazh Ichos, kinswoman of one of the Conduits of the Emperor Eluli of Khutu. Her body has been laid out at the temple of the Voice, awaiting her next Kind, whatever that will be.
<AshnabisNarrator> The loss of two such elite figures, the high nobility here in Kaskind, is surely a coincidence, but nonetheless a great loss and one that is felt throughout high society here at the Fort and in the colony.
<AshnabisNarrator> But other deaths are smaller, remarked by few, or none. Yet their Unfolding is no less part of the great Coherence under which all Kinds persist.
Llillilli speaks with Thulle about the attack on her
<AshnabisNarrator> They should thank you, Llillilli. If the world were fair, they should thank you for not only not killing them, but in fact for saving them.
<AshnabisNarrator> For the past couple of days, ever since Thethu attacked you in broad daylight, leading to their quick and brutal defeat, they have been under the care, and watchful eye, of Shulilae and Helithae.
<AshnabisNarrator> It's not that you didn't think, more than once, about just ending their life, just twisting in the pfethe a little bit further. You certainly delivered some grave injuries before exercising mercy.
<AshnabisNarrator> But there's that part of you that thinks - knows - that you are better than that. Better than them. They would exercise no such mercy towards you, which must be agonizing for them to reflect on as they recuperate.
<AshnabisNarrator> The pragmatic part of you knows, also, that creating martyrs will do your cause no good. In fact, you're more than a little worried that there may be some consequences. Surely someone in Kaskind must have seen you mowing Thethu down in broad daylight.
<AshnabisNarrator> So you have called Thulle over - as the ambassador to Kaskind from Sulise, they will surely be able to help and give counsel. Thulle's no Thelef - who is? - but while your husband is still out gathering support, their advice will be essential.
* NPC1 is now known as Thulle
* Thulle comes over to your place to visit the morning of the second day after the attack.
* Thulle is wearing a long garment of lithus, woven reeds, and shells over their blue / teal scales, creating a magisterial impression, although you are sure that it is at least in part an accomodation to Thulle having to deal with humans at the fort every day.
<Llillilli> Good morning...
<Thulle> Esteemed one, it is good to see you.
<Thulle> I understand that we have a matter to be, ah, handled.
<Llillilli> Yes.
* Llillilli shows them inside.
* Thulle twitches in what passes for the hith equivalent of a deep sigh.
<Thulle> Well.
<Thulle> In the end, this will be about the crafting of narratives. So tell me your story, in your own words.
<Llillilli> I observed Thethu watching my home. I came out to ask them what they were doing. They proceeded to pile abuse upon me. I was not interested in that so I told them I was leaving.
<Llillilli> At this point they drew a weapon... A long knife.
<Llillilli> I drew my pfethes and told them that if they attacked me they would have a regret.
<Llillilli> I waited for them to try to cut me before I made any moves, but attack they did.
<Llillilli> I did not want to kill them. So I didn't.
<Llillilli> That's all.
<Thulle> How are you - are you injured at all?
<Llillilli> No.
<Llillilli> They did not have the skill for that.
* Llillilli says matter of factly, not unkindly per se
<Thulle> And were there any witnesses to any of this?
<Llillilli> Oh... I should have said. It was the lluthi that alerted me to come outside in the beginning.
<Llillilli> So they saw everything, but I do not know what sort of witness they count as
<Llillilli> Thethu was lurking in an alley so I do not know what any passers by would have seen. Certainly people saw me carrying him afterward.
<Thulle> The lluthi are very cunning, but not possessed of the speech of the People. Not a witness, exactly - but there are ways to communicate with them if we need to.
* Llillilli nods.
<Llillilli> Would Thethu really stoop so low as to lie? TO say I attacked *them*, do you think?
<Thulle> Do you know the story of Thesi Three-toes?
<Thulle> (you don't think you've heard that one)
<Llillilli> I do not
<Thulle> It is surely a myth, from the ancient times. It tells how the wicked Thesi was brought down not by the strength of arms against their armies, but by a sese, a child, who sacrificed their life to Thesi's slaughter, but in so doing, laid bare Thesi's malevolence to their own people.
<Thulle> I wonder whether Thethu was trying something similar - to throw themselves against your blade, in an effort to discredit you. After all, they have done that sort of provocation before, with Liwhis.
<Llillilli> Ah, I see.
<Llillilli> It seems so unbecoming of a solar.
<Thulle> It does.
<Thulle> And to do so alone - with it being only their word against yours - very risky. Fellis would not have authorized it.
<Llillilli> You don't think they were aware?
<Thulle> It would surprise me.
* Llillilli sighs.
<Llillilli> So... Do the solars have a means of telling if someone is lying, like the Reckoners do?
<Llillilli> No... I guess they must not, since the lies about Liwhis were believed...
<Thulle> Not anything quite like that, no.
* Llillilli answers her own question
<Thulle> Humans have a connection to the Source, to fos, that we do not, just as we have a connection to the sun that humans do not.
<Llillilli> Well then... I agree that they were probably trying to discredit me, maybe even get me to kill them... Do you think they will lie, though?
<Thulle> I don't know. Probably not. Given that they just took a very similar action against Liwhis ... it would seem very strange.
<Thulle> I really think they may have expected you to kill them. You exercised great restraint.
<Llillilli> Maybe we should just let them go home, when they have recovered.
<Thulle> They are probably mad at you now that you didn't finish them.
<Llillilli> I don't want a prisoner.
<Thulle> No, and I'm sure that Shulilae and Helithae are tired of their company.
<Llillilli> Oh yes.
* Llillilli smiles a bit.
<Thulle> So you would like to simply let them go?
<Llillilli> That is my instinct...
<Thulle> I'm certain that the Fort would be happiest that way.
* Llillilli nods.
<Llillilli> I am not interested in dragging Thethu through the human courts.
<Llillilli> For various reasons.
<Thulle> The courts would not have much inclination to pursue charges against Thethu, even if you wanted to. Tensions with Sulise are still raw, and the General will have no interest in entering a diplomatic crisis.
<Thulle> But so, too, Sulise will not want to intervene - not on your behalf, but importantly, not on Thethu's either. Kaskind is not part of the Kingdom, and Whuthe will surely use that fact as reason not to act against either party.
* Llillilli nods.
<Llillilli> I'm sure Thethu thought of that...
<Llillilli> Fellis would surely have pressed the king to act against the fort if they had died.
<Thulle> And then used Whuthe's failure to intervene against them. Yes.
* Llillilli nods, sighing again.
<Llillilli> I will never understand politics...
<Llillilli> I don't want to play these games. Thethu can go.
* Llillilli says resolutely.
<Thulle> It is not your role, there is no need to. That is why I am here.
<Thulle> Do you want to speak to them, before they go? Or simply to let them go?
<Llillilli> I will speak with them, for all the good it will do
<Thulle> Very well. And as for me - is there anything you need me to do?
<Llillilli> You would know better than me what that might be
* Thulle considers.
* Llillilli says with a bewildered sort of chuckle
<Thulle> I can't think of anything. I will let the King know what has happened, of course, and also the General. Just so they are apprised.
* Llillilli nods.
<Llillilli> If you would come with me to see Thethu... I would appreciate that.
<Thulle> I would, of course.
<Llillilli> Thank you.
<Llillilli> I suppose let's get it over with.
<Thulle> Yes, let's.
<AshnabisNarrator> You and Thulle make the journey down the Colony Road to Shulilae and Helithae's home where Thethu is being cared for.
<Llillilli> (are they in the pool?)
* Thethu is resting calmly in the pool, until they see you at least.
<Thethu> Ah, I see you've brought a friend to come gawk at me. Honorable Thulle, how kind of you to come to see my immiseration.
<Llillilli> You seem recovered.
<Llillilli> Are you ready to leave?
<Thulle> Thethu, child. Be wise.
<Thethu> Leave for where?
<Llillilli> Sulise. Or wherever you wish to go
* Llillilli shrugs
<Thethu> Why do you insist, again and again, on humiliating me?
* Llillilli frowns.
<Llillilli> I don't understand. I thought you would want to go home.
<Thethu> To go home, to have to explain ... this.
<Llillilli> I did tell you that you would have a regret.
<Llillilli> You brought 'this' on yourself.
<Llillilli> Not me.
<Thulle> Be sensible, Thethu. You overreached, and now it is time to leave.
<Thethu> So that you can go and tell everyone how glorious and merciful the selleluf is?
<Thulle> She is as she is. I did not make her so and neither did you.
* Thethu seems as if they might be about to attack you again, so strong is the look of hatred in their eyes.
<Thethu> I will go.
<Llillilli> Well, I wish you safe travels.
* Thethu arises out of the pool and comes in towards you ... just a little too close for comfort.
* Thulle moves a step in.
<Thethu> Be ... careful.
<Llillilli> Thanks for the advice, I will
* Thethu departs.
* Llillilli sighs with a mix of exasperation and relief when they are gone.
Daifan lays claim to Nezha's body, although this is disputed by Ghegis
<AshnabisGM> Daifan, you are still disturbed and distraught from learning about Nezha's unexpected death. You have your suspicions, but no firm proof, that it was not a suicide.
<AshnabisGM> You are able to learn that the body has been taken to the temple of the Voice in Kaskind, so that it can be claimed by whichever of her friends is willing to deal with that responsibility.
<AshnabisGM> Corpseborn's remains are not kept in the main temple, but in a separate small storage shed at the back of the temple grounds. Most corpseborn, of course, are dealt with by their vaski upon death, but in some cases, it's necessary for the church to look after their remains temporarily, before they can be cremated.
<Daifan> (does she have vaski? or can I step in there)
<AshnabisGM> (you are probably as close as she has here. if there was anyone back in Taizi she was close to, you don't know of them.)
<Daifan> (okay - then I can go)
<AshnabisGM> (okay - you want to go alone, or bring anyone with you?)
<Daifan> (I'll see if Balinteze will come if they can't and if not them, Idovo)
<Daifan> (I can't wrangle a corpse on my own, if nothing else ;)
<AshnabisGM> Sure, Balinteze can go with you.
<AshnabisGM> When you arrive at the temple, you can hear voices raised in dispute at the back of the building.
<AshnabisGM> As you approach, you see Voice Erku arguing with a man you recognize as Galdai's steward Ghegis.
<Erku> I'm afraid this isn't possible. It would be a serious breach of custom.
* Erku says to him.
<Ghegis> Lady Galdai felt strongly on this matter. I am merely attempting to carry out her wishes after her untimely death.
* Erku frowns, looking displeased.
<Erku> Corpseborn remains are handled by corpseborn. To give the body to you would make you unclean, contaminated by touching it. It would require for you to be hallowed, at the very least.
* Daifan clears their throat
* Ghegis and Erku both turn to see you there.
* Ghegis seems indifferent to you, however, and goes back to his argument.
<Ghegis> If that is all that's needed, her estate has funds for a considerable donation towards the temple to pay for such a ceremony.
<Daifan> pardon me for intruding, Voice, but we are here for Nezha
* Erku looks sort of relieved and sort of annoyed at this whole situation.
<Erku> You see, her friends are here to claim her body.
<Ghegis> I reiterate that this goes against the wishes of Lady Galdai. Nezha was a much-valued part of her household, and she had specific wishes in that regard.
<Erku> Forgive me, but I am only a junior Voice - I cannot make such a decision myself.
<Ghegis> Very well, I will talk to Voice Tegus and I'm sure he will see reason here.
* Ghegis stalks off angrily.
* Erku lets out a heavy sigh once Ghegis is out of earshot.
* Daifan frowns
<Erku> I have never seen such dispute over a corpseborn body.
<Daifan> Mmmhmm.
<Daifan> He should ask himself wether he truly wishes to act against the wishes of our community.
<Erku> You are her... friends?
<Daifan> Yes.
<Daifan> May we see her?
<Erku> Yes, certainly.
* Erku will open the door to the small building for you and bring you inside. It contains a few shelves large enough to store bodies, but currently only Nezha's is there, lying still and silent.
<Daifan> Thank you.
* Ghegis is now known as Balinteze
* Balinteze gives your hand a squeeze
* Daifan will squeezes back, and then will go and look at her
* Erku lingers nearby but gives you a little space - he remains in the doorway.
<AshnabisGM> You examine the body. She is still dressed as she was at the wedding, and you can see the mark of rope around her throat.
* Daifan will examine her for other wounds or indications that it wasn't just suicide, but is doubtful they will find any
<Daifan> Oh Nezha... :/
<AshnabisGM> Minor scrapes and scratches, like you might expect if someone was moving through brush or woods without taking much care, but no other serious wounds.
<Daifan> (I would like to.... detect magic >.>)
<AshnabisGM> (okay)
* Daifan will semi surreptitiously take a sip of fos, and cast
<Daifan> !roll 1d20+9
* @Lan-werk rolls for Daifan: [ 1d20+9 ] getting [ 19 ] which, after the modifier [ 9 ] totals [ 28 ].
<AshnabisGM> okay, no problem.
<AshnabisGM> you don't detect any magic on Nezha's remains.
<Daifan> (okay)
<Daifan> I wish we knew.... why.
<Daifan> I suppose we can't just take her?
* Daifan says to Erku
* Erku looks ambivalent.
<Erku> If it was only up to me, surely yes I would let you take her.
<Erku> I wish I knew why that lackey was so interested in claiming her body. What could it possibly matter to him, or to his late mistress?
<Daifan> Mmhmmm. Strange that she would have made such pressing arrangements for after her own death.
<Balinteze> Yes. Nezha wasn't old or sick - there would be no reason to think she'd die before or shortly after Galdai did, so why would she make such a demand?
<Daifan> What does it serve him to press this matter? Surely it serves her not at all.
* Daifan says though they do't actually believe that :p
<Erku> We have the remains of Lady Galdai as well, of course... I suppose it would be possible to inquire of her, but it isn't my place to do so >.>
<Daifan> well, if any question remains, perhaps you can suggest it to Voice Tegus.
<Daifan> if Ghegis insists on troubling him
<Erku> That might be prudent. Perhaps if there is more clarity around her wishes, it would be possible to make this decision more wisely.
<Daifan> Yes, very wise, voice Erku
* Daifan glances at Balinteze.
<Daifan> We can wait.
<Erku> I will speak to Voice Tegus and tell him that there are those of her acquaintances who wish to claim the body. Maybe he will see that this is the more correct course of action.
<Daifan> thank you.
* Erku steps outside the small hut and will lock the door behind once you have exited.
<Erku> You may wait here.
* Daifan nods to him, and waits until he is gone to turn to Balinteze
<Daifan> will this never end...
<Balinteze> ... we could just take her.
<Balinteze> While they argue about it.
<Daifan> Hmmmm. could we get her away?
* Daifan checks their fos reserves
<Daifan> Erku knows me, though.
<AshnabisGM> We'l say you have enough that you could try a teleport.
<Balinteze> That's true. It would be the obvious first place to check.
<Balinteze> He doesn't know me, though.
<Daifan> hmmm....
<Balinteze> Or we can wait and see what they say.
<Balinteze> If they decide in our favour, then no problem. If they decide for Ghegis, then... we take action.
<Balinteze> I'll support you either way.
<Daifan> thank you.
* Daifan looks pained
<Daifan> Lets's try
<Balinteze> Okay.
<Daifan> (Do I have enough for owls wisdom or just the teleport?)
<Balinteze> (just the teleport)
<Balinteze> !roll 1d20
* @Lan-werk rolls for Balinteze: [ 1d20 ] getting [ 5 ].
* Balinteze fiddles with the lock for a while, trying to open it surreptitiously
<Balinteze> [m] Stupid Voice
* Balinteze eventually manages to open it, though not without signs of it being tampered with.
* Daifan will follow them inside and try and cast the spell
<Daifan> [q] this may not go well either... we will see.
<Daifan> !roll 1d20+9
* @Lan-werk rolls for Daifan: [ 1d20+9 ] getting [ 4 ] which, after the modifier [ 9 ] totals [ 13 ].
* Daifan rolls [ 1d100 ] getting [ 63 ]
* Daifan rolls [ 1d100 ] getting [ 14 ]
<Daifan> (I'll take the wound one :p)
<AshnabisGM> Okay
* Daifan will just sit down
<Balinteze> Are you okay?
* Balinteze checks you for any ill effects
<Daifan> Yes.... but it did't work
<Daifan> we can just tell them we wanted to wait with her
<Daifan> I'm so sorry Nezha
* Daifan sniffs
* Balinteze hugs you.
* Daifan will let themself have a little cry
<Balinteze> It isn't over yet. We'll keep trying to make sure they don't get her.
* Daifan nods
* Erku re-emerges from the temple a little while later, alone.
* Erku sees you in the hut and gives a frown.
* Daifan will stand up and wipe ther face
<Erku> I locked this.
<Daifan> You did. I'm sorry - I just wanted to stay with her, in case they take her away :/
* Erku looks like he's torn between being annoyed and being sympathetic.
<Daifan> have they decided?
<Erku> Voice Tegus consulted with Lady Galdai to try and gain more information, but... I do not believe the results were helpful.
<Daifan> hmm
<Daifan> how so?
<AshnabisGM> (you can roll a SM if you want)
* Daifan rolls [ 1d20+19 ] getting [ 15 ] which, after the modifier [ 19 ] totals [ 34 ]
* Erku seems concerned or even a bit upset, like whatever happened was quite unexpected or shocking to him.
<Erku> It wouldn't be appropriate to say further.
* Daifan frowns
<Erku> But...
<Erku> I see that there is some damage to this lock. It must have been improperly latched and someone could have gained access to remove the body without permission. They might even have taken a cart from the temple.
<Erku> It would be an unfortunate accident if so.
* Daifan is genuinely surprise to hear him say so
<Daifan> I see. It would be a shame if there were witnesses to such a crime....
<Erku> Indeed.
<Erku> As long as someone goes quickly, it would be difficult to know who could have done such a thing.
* Erku will then give you a curt nod and turn and walk away.
* Daifan will hustle to find that cart!
* Balinteze will help, and together you can load Nezha's body and hurriedly take it away. Where did you want to take it to?
<Daifan> (what woud the usual process be for tending to her remains? like, would we just cremate her right away, or what?)
<AshnabisGM> (well, I think probably there is a place for that at Banei. It might not be done immediately but within a few days would certainly be usual. They might allow a bit of time for any friends to be able to bid farewell.)
<Daifan> (Thats no good, unfortunately...)
<AshnabisGM> (well, what are you hoping for?)
<Daifan> We coudl take her to Ughiva and the others....
* Balinteze nods
<Balinteze> That seems reasonable for now.
* Daifan nods
<AshnabisGM> Okay, you can make your "getaway" then, and then we should move along to Veznara.
Veznara attends the reading of Galdai's will
<AshnabisNarrator> Veznara, in the week since the death of Princess Galdai, you have been exceedingly busy, dividing your time between the house in Kaskind and the estate out in the country.
<AshnabisNarrator> The events of Ziftu and Sumurt's wedding have of course been very traumatic for all of Galdai's family and staff, as well as your own.
<AshnabisNarrator> As they have for centuries, the Hand is called upon to aid families in such strange times, and you find yourself heavily occupied with matters large and small.
<AshnabisNarrator> The key decision is already made, long ago - by her own request, but quite customarily, the Voice will not be called to seek to have the Princess reborn as shoror. At her age, and given her natural manner of death, this would be quite unseemly.
<AshnabisNarrator> A delegation has just arrived from Taizi to aid in the settling of the personal portion of Galdai's estate - of course, much of her property is held by the Imperial Ebesnata lineage back home, and is not a matter for redistribution. Here, though, her lands and goods are largely her own, and so her heirs have gathered today at the manor house in Kaskind.
<AshnabisNarrator> The Taizian group is led by Omnez of the Nuntovimu, an Imperial Reckoner in service to the Emperor Zapan himself, all honour to his name, and Dezel of the Chirichighang, Voice of the Dead, to care for and return the Ancestor's remains to the Imperial temples. There are various other porters and clerks, all of whom teleported in.
<AshnabisNarrator> Of course, Princess Galdai's staff are all in mourning but there is no time for that now. Endu has been spending most of her time at the plantation, making it ready, while Ghegis takes care of matters here in town.
<AshnabisNarrator> All of you, local and Taizian, are gathered in the great hall of the manor house. Ziftu and Sumurt are here, of course, as well as the various household staff. It has been laid out in fine style, as befitting a woman of Galdai's station.
* Omnez is a very tall, slender woman of middle years. She is dressed in highly conservative Taizian garb, far too heavy for late spring in the Sestapor, and it shows in thin beads of sweat on her veiled brow.
* Thethu is now known as Dezel
* Dezel is a dour-looking pale fellow, perhaps in his fifties. His black priestly garments are lined with silver, a sign of his Imperial service.
<Omnez> Good morning. I am Omnez of the Nuntovimu and it is my solemn duty to oversee this settling of the affairs of the deceased, Imperial Princess Galdai of the Ebesnata.
* Veznara nods slightly, unconsciously
<Omnez> The Ebesnata recognize the presence of Dezel of the Voice and Veznara of the Hand, much beloved of the Imperial family.
* Veznara nods more visibly this time, eyes downcast
<Omnez> Princess Ziftu of the Ebesnata and her husband, Sumurt of the Kezondo, stand witness for the family.
<Omnez> And the staff of the household are here as well.
<Omnez> Let us begin.
* Omnez pulls out various papers and materials and lays them out on the table in front of her.
<Omnez> We have reviewed all of the relevant materials and confirm that they are in order. Her Imperial Highness was, as we all know, meticulous, and has left detailed instructions. These will, of course, be followed precisely.
<Omnez> It is of course, with great sadness that we are here today, but it is also very clear that Her Highness knew that her life was coming to a close, and so has made numerous provisions in recent months.
<Omnez> Both the manor house in Kaskind, and the plantation estate, and all its fixed and mobiliary goods, are granted to Her Imperial Highness Ziftu of the Ebesnata, with the following provisions:
<Omnez> That her loyal servants Endu of the Engevaze and Ghegis of the Zuslimno retain their positions for as long as they desire them, to guide Lady Ziftu in managing these lands and properties.
<Omnez> To each of them, five hundreds of Imperial gold in honour of their long service.
* Omnez nods at each of the named servants in turn, and awaits the clerk to finish recording.
<Omnez> Similarly, that any staff currently in the employ of the estate be retained in the service of the Lady Ziftu for as long as they should desire.
<Omnez> That her loyal servant Veznara of the Kezondo be permanently appointed to the pastoral care of Lady Ziftu, her consort Sumurt, any children they may have, and the staff and other populace of their holdings; with rooms and furnishings to be provided to her.
<Omnez> To her, likewise, five hundreds of Imperial gold.
* Omnez nods in your direction.
* Veznara nods back, her expression unchanging.
<Omnez> That a set of specified contracts with various local personages be fulfilled in a timely fashion, for services rendered. These are purchases of furnishings, some wall repairs, future payments due for services rendered, that sort of thing mainly. Her Highness specified the location of these in a drawer, and I believe we have retrieved them all.
<Omnez> Her Imperial Highness also asks her granddaughter that her children should bear the great name of Ebesnata.
<Omnez> We note that this name is borne only with Imperial consent, for the record, and shall await His Imperial Majesty's affirmation at the appropriate time.
* Omnez continues further through the papers she is working with.
<Omnez> There are various smaller gifts for other staff ... some arms and armaments for Mukhesh of the Ortezhi, a jeweled cloak-pin for someone known as Nezha, some books to be distributed to various persons here in the town indicated as 'dear friend' or 'apprentice'.
<Omnez> There are several specified items of jewelry and art specified as having been on loan from the Ebesnata lineage-holdings and the Imperial treasury, to be returned to the Emperor with thanks. These are in the process of being identified by staff.
<Omnez> And, a gift of five thousands of Imperial gold to be given to the temple of the Hand in the care of Dezmali Jesha for the support of the poor children of Kaskind.
<Omnez> Sealed in Kaskind on the twenty-second day of Jinush in the seven hundred and sixty fifth year of the Empire, witnessed by Ghegis of the Zuslimno and affirmed by Oskor of the Vostizi.
<Omnez> That is all. Are there any questions or objections to be registered?
* Ghegis clears his throat
<Ghegis> The gift to Nezha cannot be fulfilled, as Nezha is herself dead. Therefore I propose that the jewelry be maintained within the family instead, as Nezha was corpseborn and had no kin.
<Omnez> Ah, I see. Clerk, please make a note of that.
<Omnez> As a matter of Imperial law, any properties and goods not specified as belonging to the Imperial lineage directly, or otherwise assigned, are presumptively to be assigned to Lady Ziftu.
<Omnez> Any further questions or matters for this formal portion of the proceeding?
<Endu> Did it specify which rooms should be provided to Hand Veznara, or is that to be left at the discretion of the staff?
* Omnez reviews the documents.
<Omnez> There is no specificity, so that will be at the discretion of the Lady Ziftu to make all assignations of space within any landholdings.
* Endu nods
* Veznara also nods
<Omnez> Very well. This concludes the disposition of goods.
<Omnez> Voice Dezel?
* Dezel clears his throat.
<Dezel> Ah, yes. The Ancestor shall be returned to the care of the temple in Pivuku, at the specific command of her esteemed cousin the Emperor Himself.
<Dezel> We will arrange for its transport with the local temple. I have already spoken with Voice Tegus about this and it is settled.
<Dezel> We will ensure that Lady Ziftu has ample opportunity to visit with her esteemed Imperial ancestor when she visits home.
<Dezel> That is all.
<Omnez> Very well, these proceedings are called to a close.
<Veznara> (How is Ziftu reacting to all this, btw?)
<AshnabisNarrator> The staff leap into action, having prepared a meal for the guests.
<AshnabisNarrator> Ziftu seems very sad, of course. She's been very quiet throughout all of this - she isn't sobbing wildly or anything like that.
<Veznara> (Sincerely sad, or expected sad expression sad? Hmmm.)
* Veznara approaches Endu after a suitable interval
<Endu> Good day, Hand Veznara.
* Endu says respectfully
<Veznara> Good day, Endu.
<Veznara> How are you doing?
<Endu> It's a sad day, but I am well enough, thank you.
* Veznara nods
<Veznara> I think everything has gone just as Her Imperial Highness would have wished for such an occasion.
* Endu nods
<Veznara> Regarding her wishes and your question, is there any place in particular that you had in mind for me?
<Veznara> When it's convenient, of course - I know you must still have many things to attend to.
<Endu> If Lady Ziftu agrees, I can offer you several rooms to choose from.
* Veznara nods
<Endu> It must be fortunate for you to be relieved of your duties at the temple so you can concentrate on your other responsibilities.
<Veznara> Oh, I'm happy to serve the Ancestors there. But I am looking forward to coming here, yes. I'm... very honored. And gratified.
<Veznara> How has the household been adjusting?
<Endu> It is a very great change, of course, but one that the Lady prepared us for. She was thoughtful in that way.
* Veznara nods
<Veznara> And generous.
* Endu nods
<Veznara> A pity that... not all of her bequests can be distributed as she wished. :/
<Endu> Ah... well, of course despite her wisdom, she could not foresee every eventuality.
<Veznara> No, not even she. It is... sad. For more than one reason.
<Endu> Indeed.
<Veznara> Well, I should let you attend to other things. Good day, Endu.
<Endu> Good day, Hand Veznara.
* Veznara goes next to talk to the Reckoner.
* Omnez is nibbling at some delicate pastry.
<Veznara> Good day, Reckoner Omnez.
<Omnez> Hand Veznara, my condolences on your loss.
* Veznara nods
<Veznara> Thank you. Her Imperial Highness was a great lady, and a generous mistress.
<Omnez> Indeed.
<Veznara> It's hard to imagine this place without her.
<Veznara> what happens now?
<Omnez> The Lady Ziftu will take over the household.
<Omnez> I'm not sure there is much more to be said - her duties will be many, but you and the other staff will be here to assist her.
<Omnez> The new husband, he is your brother, is he not?
* Veznara nods
<Veznara> Yes.
<Omnez> He will have much to learn as well, about married life.
<Veznara> Yes. I suppose all married people must. I've been doing my best to help them both, of course, but everything seems so unsettled... it will take some time to get used to the new circumstances.
<Omnez> Of course.
<Omnez> ... was there something concerning you, Hand Veznara?
<Veznara> well... I was wondering about the jewelled pin. The circumstances under which it cannot be given as intended are upsetting.
<Omnez> Ah. Well. The circumstances are very unusual.
<Omnez> It is rare for the unclean to be named at all as beneficiaries, much less for them to be dead at the time of the bequest.
* Omnez shrugs.
<Omnez> The Lady Ziftu will be able to do with it as she wishes.
<Veznara> Well, I know that the person in question had attended Her Imperial Highness for many years.
<Omnez> Did the ... did she die recently?
<Veznara> Very shortly after Her Imperial Highness herself, I understand. She... could not bear the thought of the rest of her life without her mistress, it seems. :(
<Omnez> Ah, that is sad.
<Veznara> Well, in any case, thank you for presiding over the occasion. I hope your journey back to Taizi is pleasant.
* Dezel comes over to Veznara.
<Dezel> Hand Veznara, a brief word?
<Veznara> Certainly, Voice Dezel.
* Omnez takes her leave.
<Veznara> What can I do for you?
<Dezel> Perhaps in the prayer room?
* Veznara nods, and leads him there.
<Veznara> Is something wrong?
<Dezel> I overheard you speaking with the reckoner about the dead corpseborn.
<Dezel> Did you know her well?
<Veznara> Well,.. somewhat, I suppose.
<Veznara> As I was saying, she attended Her Imperial Highness for many years - she was already here when I began doing so myself.
<Veznara> What about her?
<Dezel> What was her connection to Her Imperial Highness, other than that?
<Veznara> I didn't know, exactly. It did seem a bit odd, But, ah, Her Imperial Highness was not the kind of person who would invite questions of that sort, and I never asked Nezha herself.
<Veznara> Do you know something about it?
<Dezel> Hmm. Were you aware that Ghegis made an attempt to retrieve Nezha's body from the temple of the Voice?
* Veznara raises an eyebrow at that
<Veznara> Ah, no. I had no idea.
<Veznara> What happened?
<Dezel> I don't believe the body was turned over. Normally the bodies of corpseborn are held separately until they can be returned to their local community for their own rites.
<Veznara> Yes, of course. Why was he trying to claim it?
<Dezel> Just between the bequest and this episode, I wondered whether, perhaps ... there was some other story. Perhaps Nezha was the result of a tide carrying her out of the Imperial family? Or something of the sort.
<Veznara> Ah... you mean that her mother... well, I suppose that would explain it. :/
<Dezel> I really don't know why Ghegis would want it. What does the body have to do with anything? It doesn't house an Ancestor.
<Dezel> This is all very unusual.
<AshnabisNarrator> (you can make a SM here)
<Veznara> !roll 1d20+18
* @Lan-werk rolls for Veznara: [ 1d20+18 ] getting [ 14 ] which, after the modifier [ 18 ] totals [ 32 ].
* Dezel definitely seems like he knows more about this and is holding back.
<Veznara> Voice Dezel, it sounds like there may be more to this. I would of course be happy to help, but perhaps if you could explain further?
<Veznara> (Diplomacy roll?)
<AshnabisNarrator> (to adjust his friendliness? sure, I mean, you can try that, it doesn't compel him or anything)
<Veznara> !roll 1d20+23
* @Lan-werk rolls for Veznara: [ 1d20+23 ] getting [ 6 ] which, after the modifier [ 23 ] totals [ 29 ].
<Veznara> (I think I'll re-roll that...)
<AshnabisNarrator> (ok)
<Veznara> !roll 1d20+23
* @Lan-werk rolls for Veznara: [ 1d20+23 ] getting [ 6 ] which, after the modifier [ 23 ] totals [ 29 ].
<Veznara> (sigh)
<Veznara> (Well, maybe he'll tell me anyway - 29 isn't *bad*, exactly. :P )
<Dezel> I shouldn't talk about this ... but ... well.
* Veznara waits patiently
<Dezel> It would be ordinary, at a time like this, to consult with the Ancestor about their wishes about any outstanding matters. There is always some little thing to be resolved.
* Veznara nods
<Dezel> We received a request from the household not to do so, on account of her wishes being so detailed and recently made.
<Dezel> ... but ...
<Dezel> Voice Tegus made such an attempt. It ... it failed.
<Veznara> ...
<Veznara> I'm sorry... it failed?
<Dezel> That is what he told me. What reason would he have to lie?
<Veznara> How can that be?
<Dezel> Or ... what reason would he have to tell me *that* lie?
<Dezel> Well ... there are only two known reasons why it might fail.
<Dezel> The first is that ... the Lady Galdai, upon her death, became an aidastu, instead of an abas. A ... haunt.
<Veznara> Surely not!
<Dezel> And yet, more desirable than the second possibility.
<Dezel> That she was not of human Kind.
<Veznara> What do you mean?
<Dezel> There are beings in this world, that can take human form, but are not human, not of any of the six Kinds. I don't know.
<Dezel> I've said far too much.
<Dezel> Look, tomorrow I leave, with Princess Galdai's body, to be returned to Pivuku to the Imperial tombs. I am not a brave man. My loyalty to the Emperor is beyond question. But I do not know the ways of things here in Kaskind, and other than by name I do not know Voice Tegus.
<Veznara> No, I was her spiritual advisor. You are right to bring this to my attention.
<Dezel> We should get back.
<Veznara> First... there was nothing unusual about her body, was there?
<Dezel> No, not to my knowledge.
<Veznara> Well. Thank you, Voice Dezel. Let us return, as you say.
Jimba has a picnic with Dekhesh
<AshnabisGM> Jimba, things have settled down slightly after the disruptions of the past several weeks - or months, perhaps. Your warehouse is repaired after the fire, Ulutse seems to be sort of working things out with her family and with Aptan, and your new (stolen) ship is in excellent ship-shape.
<AshnabisGM> You've finally had a chance to breathe and so it was a pleasant relief to say yes when Dekhesh stopped by to ask if you'd like to join him for dinner.
<Jimba> (Oh, nice. Where we going?)
* Dekhesh has brought a basket with some food in it, and a blanket.
* Jimba smiles to see him.
<Jimba> A pleasant surprise.
<Dekhesh> Well, I haven't wanted to bother you - you seemed like you needed some time.
* Dekhesh walks with you along the shore, until you find a decent spot, quiet and out of the way, to set up your picnic.
<Dekhesh> I gather things have been pretty busy lately. You have a new ship, for one thing, that has to take a lot of time and attention to get organized.
<Jimba> Luckily, it wasn't just my time and attention.
<Jimba> And it's certainly not a bother. I always like to see you. :)
* Dekhesh smiles
<Jimba> Though I understand it may not always be...uncomplicated.
<Jimba> How've you been?
<Dekhesh> I'm all right. Things have been ... complicated, like you said.
<Jimba> Care to talk about it?
<Dekhesh> Well, in part there are just a lot of things going on in Banei right now. New arrivals settling in, disputes between the people already there, that sort of thing.
* Jimba nods.
<Jimba> I'm somewhat aware of all that. ;)
<Dekhesh> One recent death, too, which has upset people.
<Jimba> (Would I have heard about that?)
<AshnabisGM> (probably not, I don't think.)
<Jimba> Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. What happened?
<Dekhesh> Nezha took her own life, it seems. She worked for the old princess lady who just died and I guess... I don't know. Decided to go with her?
<Jimba> That seems...extreme.
* Dekhesh nods
<Jimba> Especially considering I can't *imagine* the princess inspired that kind of devotion.
<Dekhesh> That seems right. She sounds like she was a mean old bitch from anything I heard.
* Jimba nods.
<Jimba> Good riddance, I say.
<Jimba> But this woman from Banei...
<Dekhesh> Nezha was a good person, though. She was well liked in the village, even if no one knew her extremely well.
* Jimba gives Dekhesh a sympathetic look and puts his hand on his.
<Jimba> I'm sorry.
<Dekhesh> Thanks. I think Daifan is helping to look after her remains, and the things in her house.
<Jimba> That's good, as far as there can be good in this situation.
<Jimba> Anything I can do to help?
<Dekhesh> I don't know - I guess Daifan might use a hand if there are possessions to be taken care of or sold off or anything, but I'm not sure of the specifics.
* Jimba *nods.*
<Dekhesh> Anyway, in other news, I heard your cousin got married - does that mean it's just you left single, and your family are going to start putting the pressure on?
* Dekhesh asks with a teasing smile.
* Jimba smirks.
<Jimba> I mean, maybe?
<Jimba> But there hasn't been *too
* much talk about it yet.
<Jimba> I mean, I seem to be doing okay on my own. ;)
<Dekhesh> That's good. I hope they won't give you a hard time about it.
<Dekhesh> But if you need me to, I can definitely show up and make a scene in front of any girls they try to set you up with ;)
<Jimba> We managed pretty well for Kat and Llillilli, though my sister did all of her stuff herself, really.
* Jimba laughs.
<Jimba> I feel like I can make my own scenes, but that might be worth it just to see.
* Dekhesh chuckles at that
<Jimba> There was some talk of giving cover to Kat's girlfriend. I'm not entirely sure where we landed on that.
* Dekhesh nods
<Dekhesh> And people say budal families are complicated :)
* Jimba shrugs.
<Jimba> I think every family is complicated, really.
<Jimba> So much to deal with.
<Jimba> Speaking of, we had some...strangeness, recently, in the family department.
<Dekhesh> oh?
<Jimba> My father came to my cousin's wedding.
<Dekhesh> Was that expected?
* Jimba shakes his head.
<Jimba> Didn't even know he was still alive.
<Dekhesh> Oh... huh. So he just showed up out of the blue?
<Jimba> Yeah, pretty much. He heard my cousin was getting married and thought he'd reconnect with the family.
<Jimba> He was pretty surprised to find me and my sister there.
<Jimba> It, ah, it didn't go so well.
<Dekhesh> I'm sorry :/ How are you handling it?
<Jimba> Okay, I guess.
<Jimba> We've talked since.
<Jimba> It's still new and strange.
* Dekhesh nods
<Jimba> Sorry, I feel like I'm getting real heavy with you, when you brought this nice lunch and everything.
<Dekhesh> it's fine! I like to hear about the things going on in your life.
* Jimba smiles.
<Jimba> I helped a friend/employee reconnect with her family recently. That was nice. :)
<Dekhesh> One thing that being budal teaches you is, we make our own families. I think it's something that anyone could benefit from. You get to choose if this guy is going to be in your family or not, regardless of whether he sees himself as your father. Your friend gets to choose hers. And so on :)
* Jimba smiles and nods.
<Jimba> And you? Who's your family?
* Dekhesh smiles at that
<Dekhesh> I guess I'm figuring that out.
<Dekhesh> I... don't want to try and hold on to you too hard, Jimba. In case things change, or you need to have your freedom. But I do think of you as... something more than friends.
<Jimba> I'd like that. A lot. But I also worry I can't give you what you want, or need.
<Dekhesh> Well, maybe you can let me decide that. I like what we have when we're together.
<Jimba> Likewise.
* Jimba smiles again, and will lean in to kiss Dekhesh if he seems amenable.
* Dekhesh does seem to be!
<Jimba> Though I do have to warn you, I have sort of a blood feud with the Shotsers and the Cormorants at the moment. >.>
<Dekhesh> Okay, if you need me to help you fight a war or something, I'm on it.
* Dekhesh says with a smile
* Jimba laughs.
<Jimba> And, see, I'm doing everything in my power to prevent one.
<Jimba> I just...
* Jimba sighs.
<Dekhesh> Just what?
<Jimba> There's so much here, and everyone seems to want to take it for themselves, when there's really enough for everyone.
<Jimba> I don't know why people can't see that.
<Jimba> Old imperial rivalries, I guess.
<Jimba> Back and back and back.
<Dekhesh> Ah.. people are people, unfortunately.
* Jimba nods.
<Jimba> And here I think my sister is naive about that.
<Dekhesh> But I don't think it's hopeless.
* Jimba chuckles.
<Jimba> Guess I'm basically the same.
<Jimba> Oh?
<Dekhesh> Well... I guess I look at it from my point of view, and say, we can always do something different. We don't have to be stuck in the past or tied down by how things used to be fifty or a hundred years ago.
<Dekhesh> And if some people don't agree with that, there's a lot of things in the swamp that can dispose of bodies ;p
* Jimba laughs.
<Jimba> I really hate that it comes to that, but...seems like it does sometimes.
<Dekhesh> Sorry - I know you'd rather everyone sorts things out peacefully. But maybe a few people just need to be gator food so that can work.
<Jimba> I'm...coming around to that argument, I have to admit.
<Jimba> Hence, you know, blood feud. ;)
<Dekhesh> I guess you don't get into a blood feud without some blood.
<Dekhesh> hopefully you can get out without too much more.
* Jimba nods.
<Jimba> Well, I've got good friends and family to help when it comes down to it.
* Dekhesh smiles
<Dekhesh> I hope I'm included there.
* Jimba smiles.
<Jimba> I hope so too.
* Dekhesh gives you another kiss to reinforce the sentiment :)
Solos
Veznara talks with Bitsaar about Galdai's spirit
* Bitsaar can be found at the land registry, pretty reliably.
<Veznara> Bitsaar.
* Veznara smiles at him.
* Bitsaar smiles broadly.
<Bitsaar> Hey, Veznara!
* Bitsaar tries to remember there may be other people watching and to keep his composure.
<Veznara> I wonder, could you help with something in the map room for a moment?
<Bitsaar> Oh! Yeah, sure ...
<Veznara> Thanks.
* Bitsaar says with what you think might be a lusty smile.
* Veznara heads over there as he follows (presumably)
* Bitsaar tries not to seem too eager as he follows along.
* Veznara makes sure the door is closed and nobody can overhear
<Veznara> (Does anybody seem to notice or care as we go there?)
<Bitsaar> (not really - or if they do, no one seems to react)
* Veznara waits until the door is closed so no-one can see, then leans against him and softly kisses him once.
<Veznara> [q] Darling.
<Veznara> [q] Sorry, I couldn't resist. I really do have to talk to you, though.
* Bitsaar smiles.
<Bitsaar> Oh? About what?
* Bitsaar kisses you back.
<Veznara> I came back from the reading of the will a little while ago... and something's wrong.
<Bitsaar> What do you mean?
<Veznara> Apparently, members of the Voice tried to talk to the Princess Galdai, to answer some questions about what she wanted done. And... they weren't able to talk to her.
<Bitsaar> I don't understand. Why not?
<Veznara> Well, that's the question. This isn't public, of course. I was hoping you might know something that might explain it.
<Bitsaar> Who was the Voice who did the ritual?
<Veznara> I'm not sure.
<Veznara> The Voice who came her from Taizi was the one who told me, since I was the Princess' spiritual advisor. I doubt anyone from the temple here would have said anything.
<Veznara> Anyway, he said one possibility was that she might have become a haunt.
<Bitsaar> Oh. Ohhhh ...
<Veznara> I don't see how that could be true, though.
<Veznara> Is it possible that... she just didn't want to answer?
<Bitsaar> That's not really a thing.
<Bitsaar> They can be laconic, or cagey, but they can't just ... not answer.
<Veznara> Did you have another thought? It sounded like something might have occurred to you just now...
<Bitsaar> Just that if she's a haunt, that's very bad. Very bad.
<Veznara> Yes. Her death was natural, though; and she was already very old.
<Bitsaar> Yes.
<Bitsaar> Why are you asking me, rather than, say, Voice Tegus? I'm no theologian, Veznara
<Veznara> Well, as I say, I don't think I'm supposed to know. This is another thing we have to keep secret.
<Bitsaar> Right.
<Veznara> There is one way we might be able to find out more, though.
<Bitsaar> Oh, what's that?
<Veznara> You remember her poor servant, Nezha? The one who was found hanging afterward?
<Bitsaar> Oh, yes, I heard about that, the corpseborn woman.
<Veznara> Yes.
<Veznara> Apparently her body was claimed by them. And they have some suspicions about what actually happened.
<Veznara> Would it be possible to talk to her? Would you be willing to do that?
<Bitsaar> Claimed by ... who?
<Veznara> The others in Banei.
<Bitsaar> Ah.
<Veznara> That's what usually happens, isn't it?
<Bitsaar> You know, we don't really talk to Corpseborn. They're not ... they're not Ancestors. Technically.
* Veznara nods
<Veznara> Or so we have been taught.
<Veznara> But...
<Bitsaar> But I know it *can* be done.
<Veznara> Do you think you could? Would you be willing to try?
* Bitsaar shrugs.
<Bitsaar> I'm willing to try ... but then also, you don't want me to tell anyone about this, right?
* Veznara nods
<Veznara> I'm afraid so. Is that okay?
* Bitsaar shrugs.
<Bitsaar> Yeah. I guess.
<Veznara> (Does he seem reluctant? Indifferent?)
<Bitsaar> (reluctant, anxious, yeah)
<Veznara> Oh... my darling. If you don't want to, you don't have to. It's just... I don't know what else to do.
<Bitsaar> (i'll let you make a Diplomacy roll)
<Veznara> !roll 1d20+23
* @Lan-werk rolls for Veznara: [ 1d20+23 ] getting [ 16 ] which, after the modifier [ 23 ] totals [ 39 ].
<Bitsaar> (consider him fully smitten ... smote)
<Bitsaar> I'll do it.
* Bitsaar says, emboldened.
* Veznara smiles gratefully
<Veznara> Thank you.
<Bitsaar> (all right, we can arrange for you to go to Banei with Bitsaar and meet Daifan there after work)
<Veznara> (Sounds good!)
Bitsaar attempts to speak with Nezha's spirit but fails
* Daifan will have filled Ughiva in on as much as they could
* Veznara goes with Bitsaar to meet them as arranged...
<Bitsaar> I don't think I've ever been up here. It's strange.
<Veznara> It's.. different. I suppose I've probably interacted with the people here a bit, but mostly when they come to the Temple.
<Bitsaar> They seem happy, though.
<Veznara> Well.. they make the best of it, I think.
<Veznara> But then, they have no choice.
<Bitsaar> I just mean, whenever we see corpseborn in the towns, they're looking down, they seem so ... debased.
<Bitsaar> But here they're just like any other peasants.
<Bitsaar> Where is the body being kept?
<Veznara> Here we are...
* Veznara leads them over to where they have arranged to meet Daifan
<Daifan> Hello, Hand Veznara, Voice Bitsaar...
<Daifan> Please, come inside
<Veznara> Hello, Daifan. Thank you.
* Bitsaar follows along behind Veznara.
* Daifan has laid out Nezaha's body as respectfuly as possible on a low bench
<Veznara> What questions did you want to ask?
<Bitsaar> Has the body been consecrated?
<Daifan> I doubt it.
<Bitsaar> I can only ask one question of an unconsecrated body.
* Daifan sighs
<Daifan> hmm.
<Daifan> That is more tricky.
* Daifan thinks
<Bitsaar> It can be a ... broad question if you like. About the circumstances of her death.
<Bitsaar> The answers are sometimes cryptic, but that's always possible.
<Veznara> I think that's what you're after here, isn't it, Daifan?
<Daifan> Could we just ask that? Why are you dead? What are the circumstances of your death?
<Bitsaar> Yes, we can do that.
<Veznara> if it turns out that it wasn't suicide after all, that raises other questions... but at least we'll know that much.
<Bitsaar> You think ... someone might have murdered her? Why?
* Bitsaar is just full of questions today.
<Daifan> I think it is possible she was compelled to kill herself
* Bitsaar just stares, not sure what to say to that.
<Bitsaar> Well ... let's do this, then.
<Daifan> Mmmhmm. Please.
<Bitsaar> We are gathered in the presence of Nezha, to beseech the Ances ... the entity for knowledge and counsel.
* Bitsaar lays his hands upon Nezha's body, trying not to flinch.
* Daifan tries not to roll their eyes
* Veznara remains carefully stoic.
* Bitsaar speaks to the corpse.
<Bitsaar> Tell us, O ... Nezha, what were the circumstances of your death?
* Bitsaar receives an answer, and has a puzzled look.
<Daifan> What did she say?
<Bitsaar> It doesn't make sense.
<Daifan> Not to you perhaps
<Veznara> Perhaps we can figure it out... what was the answer?
<Veznara> ...there *was* an answerr?
* Veznara says, suddenly worried
<Bitsaar> It isn't her.
<Daifan> what?
<Daifan> what do you mean?
<Daifan> what was the answer?
<Bitsaar> There is a presence there, a ... spirit, I guess, you would call it. But it isn't her.
<Daifan> ...a haunt?
* Veznara looks at Daifan
<Veznara> No.
<Veznara> Someone else.
<Bitsaar> No ... the response was like, not in words.
<Daifan> ...was it Galdai?
* Bitsaar shakes his head.
<Bitsaar> No.
<Daifan> no wonder they wanted her recovered
<Bitsaar> It was like, the entity that responded to me had no memory of being in this body, until ... the tree, the noose, pain.
<Bitsaar> It's like ... an Ancestor with no words to express what happened to it.
<Daifan> then.... where is Nezha?
<Bitsaar> I don't know.
<Veznara> This spirit is still connected with this body, though?
<Bitsaar> Yes.
<Daifan> but you can't communicate with it further?
<Bitsaar> Not right now.
<Daifan> when could you?
<Daifan> is it an ancestor?
<Bitsaar> Next week ... or if the body were consecrated, then tomorrow, perhaps?
<Daifan> I dn't know how we woudl do that.
* Daifan says flatly
<Bitsaar> I think it is an Ancestor, but a very strange one.
<Bitsaar> Almost ... simple?
<Bitsaar> That's not the right word.
<Veznara> Childlike?
<Daifan> oh no.
<Veznara> A soul that has not had a full life?
* Daifan looks furious
<Bitsaar> I guess.
* Daifan loks at Veznara
<Veznara> I... oh, Ancestors.
<Daifan> We will do some divinations, and see... if we can confirm your suspicons
<Veznara> What of this body, in the meantime?
<Daifan> we can take care of her
<Daifan> But now one here is abe to consecrate it We're not the Voice :p
<Bitsaar> I can ... if we had a Voice temple available.
<Veznara> Does it have to be done very soon? How long does it take?
<Bitsaar> The ritual can be done at any time. It basically ... establishes a firm connection between the Ancestor and its material vessel.
<Bitsaar> It takes maybe an hour or so.
<Daifan> I am not sure that would be... appropriate
<Daifan> to ties this spiritb to her body further
<Daifan> (to tie this spirit etc)
<Veznara> Ah.
<Veznara> From what you say, can it really answer further questions anyway?
<Daifan> Can a spirit be untethered from a body? >.>
<Bitsaar> I don't know. Voice Tegus or Voice Elukir might know.
<Bitsaar> A haunt, I guess, that's untethered.
<Daifan> mmmm.
* Daifan eyes Veznara
* Veznara looks back at Daifan inquiringly, unsure of what she's thinking
<Daifan> Thank you for your assistance, Voice Bitsaar.
<Bitsaar> You're welcome. I'm sorry I couldn't give you better answers.
<Daifan> could you wait outside for a moment, please?
* Daifan nods to him
* Bitsaar goes out, still very confused.
* Veznara stares at the body for a moment
<Veznara> !roll 1d20+18
* @Lan-werk rolls for Veznara: [ 1d20+18 ] getting [ 19 ] which, after the modifier [ 18 ] totals [ 37 ].
<Bitsaar> (no haunts here)
* Veznara shakes her head and makes a helpless gesture
<Daifan> I'm afraid she's already done it, if it is the child...
<Daifan> but woudl there be some wat to.... reverse it?
<Daifan> evict her? Is it too late fr this child's spirit?
<Veznara> I hope there's a way to reverse it. Where is the child now?
<Veznara> And where is poor Nezha?
<Veznara> This explains why Ghegis was so desperate to collect her body, though.
* Daifan nods
<Daifan> This child is with the family that lives in the house near where Nezha took her life
<Veznara> He'll be all the more desperate now.
<Daifan> I was already suspicious
<Daifan> because if that
<Veznara> Normally, Nezha's body would be burned?
<Daifan> Yes, in a few days
<Veznara> I... don't know if that has to be stopped, or if they need to be sure it happens. :/
<Daifan> me either
<Daifan> I will try and have anseers for ou as soon as we can
* Veznara nods
<Veznara> Maybe I can find out something at the house... i don't know. Asking too much may tip our hand. But maybe just seeing what Ghegis does or *doesn't* say will be useful.
* Daifan nods
<Daifan> okay
<Veznara> Well... I should go join Bitsaar. I'm not sure how to explain this...
* Daifan makes a vague gesture
<Daifan> good luck
* Veznara grimaces
<Veznara> Thanks.
* Veznara goes out to rejoin Bitsaar
* Daifan will go find Ughiva
<Bitsaar> Is everything ok?
<Bitsaar> Your friend seemed upset with me.
<Veznara> Oh, no. It was the news, not you, I'm sure.
* Veznara looks up at him, and slowly smiles
<Veznara> How could anyone not be charmed by you?
<Bitsaar> What now?
* Veznara sighs
<Veznara> I don't know. It's all so confusing.
<Veznara> Obviously, we shouldn't say anything to anyone. I'm sorry - I seem to drag you into so many secrets!
<Bitsaar> Let's take our minds off of it, then.
* Veznara blushes
* Bitsaar smiles.
<Veznara> That... sounds lovely. Let's go back to town.
Junan and Kikhash discuss Zefa's tribunal
<AshnabisNarrator> Junan, since your meeting with Jaigadu, the case of Zefa Teltai has been on your mind a great deal. To be honest, it's been hanging over you for more than a year. Your Order is meant to be above those sorts of things. Not that you're naive - you know that envoys can be as wicked and corrupt as anyone. But still.
<AshnabisNarrator> You'll admit to taking more than a little bit of pleasure at the prospect of being responsible for bringing her to justice - maybe the General's justice, but at least that of the envoys, depending on what Jaigadu can arrange.
<AshnabisNarrator> You're willing to be patient, but apparently it won't take too long. When you went into your offices at the land registry this morning, you see that you have an appointment slotted in for you later that day with Kikhash Urdondu, head envoy for the Fort. It's been too long since you talked to him anyway. The appointment booking merely has one word: 'Justice'.
* AshnabisNarrator is now known as Kikhash
* Junan smirks... subtle
* Kikhash comes by, dressed in his envoy regalia, at the appointed time.
<Kikhash> Junan. It's been too long.
<Junan> It has, how have you and your family been?
<Kikhash> Well, thank you. Zesel has been much more at ease now that things are a little calmer at work.
<Junan> that good
<Junan> so Justice... thats a strange name for a land plot
<Kikhash> So it is, so it is. I'm assuming we're safe to speak here?
<Junan> (I would assume so?)
<Kikhash> (yes)
<Junan> Yes its fine
<Kikhash> So, let's start with this. In your view, what should become of Zefa? What is the ideal, best-case scenario?
<Junan> Hmm
<Junan> She had people killed...
* Kikhash nods.
<Kikhash> More than likely killed at least one with her own hands.
<Junan> I'm not a bloodthirsty person, but what option is there really?
<Junan> strip her of her lineage, remove her from the Envoy role, she's experienced, just changes her appearance, finds a new Lineage and is back making trouble
<Kikhash> Yes.
<Kikhash> So here's the problem. You know as well as I do that the Envoys, this tribunal that Jaigadu wants to put together, it's not going to end in an execution. We don't kill our own. That's the whole point, isn't it?
<Junan> you're assuming she is even going to bother to show up
<Kikhash> Right.
<Kikhash> So, the other option would be to let the Fort deal with it, it's a murder, we know how to deliver justice for murderers.
<Kikhash> But that has its own complexity.
<Junan> but that would be admitting an Envoy committed murder, which messes with Jaigadu's image of the Envoys here.
<Kikhash> And worse - given Zefa's involvement with the Fands, and the war with Charadip, and all that - it brings up a lot of things that the General does *not* want revisited.
<Kikhash> So they probably make some sort of deal with her, frankly, maybe even a sweeter deal than she'd get from the tribunal of envoys.
<Junan> you think Charadip would lift a hand to help her?
<Kikhash> No, probably not. But tensions are still raw with them. And for the General to admit that a major envoy from our side was secretly collaborating ... it's not a good look for her, politically.
<Kikhash> She has masters to please, back home in Choradan.
<Junan> Come on, she could play it as just another scheming Daligashi... back home would lick that up and ask for more.
<Junan> And the Senator could blame it on an overzealous Ruby
<Kikhash> Maybe, maybe ... but Ghurtai's not looking to fan the flames with Daligash either.
<Junan> and still save face
<Kikhash> I agree *probably* Zefa still has more to fear from the General than from the envoys. Just that either way, chances are, she lives through either form of justice.
<Junan> There are others that want thier pieces of flesh too
<Kikhash> Granted. But my appointment was called 'Justice', not 'Vengeance'.
<Kikhash> So I've been thinking.
<Kikhash> What if we let her run?
<Junan> Would she? I mean ignoring the Tribunal... thats easy 'cause of playing politics makes it hard to physically lay a hand on her, but the General?
<Kikhash> Well, here's my thinking.
<Junan> Does she think things would be that bad for her, that she wont be able to slink her way out.
<Junan> im listening
<Kikhash> We can put out a warrant for her arrest. Maybe she runs right away. Maybe. Then we send a ...
* Kikhash waves his hand around.
<Kikhash> ...crack team to go and 'fetch' her, and maybe she doesn't come back in good shape.
<Kikhash> Or maybe she surrenders herself. Then we just need to ... strategically get her some assistance to escape. Which she might take. I could help her, even, if need be.
<Kikhash> And then, we're back to the crack team, which I'm sure you'd be able to find the right people.
<Junan> There's probably a line of people waiting for the chance
<Kikhash> I know your friends are not big enthusiasts of hers. The corpseborn, the scary hithkindred, your pirate friend seems a little soft, but ... well, I'm just saying, if you want her dead, you may have to do it yourselves.
<Kikhash> Nice and legal cause she's on the run.
<Junan> and if the boat gets a leak transporting her back, and runs a little late... sorry about your luck
<Kikhash> Such a shame.
<Junan> If this is how were gonna do it, this is how I think it should happen.
<Junan> Let Jaigadu call the Tribunal to get her hackles up, but we let it slip that the General is signing a warrent for her, regardless of what the Tribunal results are
<Junan> That should put pressure on her to make a hasty decision
<Junan> the decision we hope she makes
* Kikhash nods.
<Kikhash> Makes sense. The tribunal is more of an insult - it's her own people, it's us.
<Junan> I personally want the tribunal to happen, just so Jaigadu can have some humble pie on trying to control someone so malicious
* Kikhash laughs.
<Kikhash> Well, who knows, maybe she stays? Maybe she really is so arrogant that she thinks she's going to get out of this.
<Junan> we could up the pressure and let slip that the Mystics of Charadip are also interested in getting a hold of her, since the envoy she killed is a nephew of one of theres
* Kikhash nods.
<Kikhash> We could.
<Junan> the best deceptions always have truth in them
<Kikhash> So they do. All right then, I think it's a plan.
<Junan> I'm happy to see her fall, but I'm not going to enjoy the Justice
<Kikhash> It is necessary, but yes, sad whenever one of our esteemed order must be brought to heel.
<Kikhash> We have spent centuries earning our liberties against emperors and tyrants and lordlings, and don't need ones like her making us look bad.
<Junan> I just remind myself that she chose to take lives, nobody forced her
<Junan> and that makes what happens next acceptable
<Kikhash> Indeed.
<Kikhash> All right, anything else before I go?
<Junan> Isnt that enough
<Kikhash> All right. I'll let you know as things progress. Thanks, Junan.
<Junan> You too...
<Junan> I'm gonna slip away and drink some wine and play some music, to cleanse myself of this shittiness for a bit... you're welcome to join me.
<Kikhash> Another time, perhaps.
<Junan> another time
