The Guardian of the Arch is typically a child in Diablotin who begins to feel their calling between ages 8-12. They undergo a bond with the Arch, the exact nature of which is unknown, but which permits them to mediate between it and other humans. They live near the Arch, being unwilling or unable to leave it for lengthy periods of time, and are able to venture within it and return unharmed. When they reach adulthood, they are released from their service, and another young person takes over the role. The current Guardian is a half-shadar kai girl named Chalniss.
