===Coifárë Talks to Their Cousin===
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: Ah cousin, so glad I ran into you.  Shame about the big feast.
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: I had heard they were finally going to bring out the good wine
 +
 +
Coifárë: I'm sorry?
 +
 +
Coifárë: will look up from their painting.
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: Events have been called off tonight... for reasons I guess
 +
 +
Coifárë: frowns.
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: shrugs
 +
 +
Coifárë: Yes, because people died, Calar.
 +
 +
Coifárë: I assume the Amathalises felt it would be in poor taste to feast tonight.
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: Yes, yes, there was death... let their souls travel to their deserved place in the heavens
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: The only real reason I showed up to this...gathering... was for the final event
 +
 +
Coifárë: Oh? And to what were you looking forward?
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: To shower these folks with the blessing of my presence, in the one event worthy of my attention
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: and now its all a waste
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: at least you got to... doodle?
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: gestures to the painting
 +
 +
Coifárë: sighs at that.
 +
 +
Coifárë: I've had some opportunity to paint, yes. The gardens are beautiful, and the chapel is very peaceful.
 +
 +
Coifárë: You haven't had a chance to, ahem, 'shower' anyone in the few days we've been here?
 +
 +
Coifárë: I would have thought the baths made for an easy opportunity make an impression.
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: still trying to drag me down to your level I see
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: I attended the baths, as appropriate for one of my standard, and have met with those who were deserved of my attention
 +
 +
Coifárë: I've no idea what you could possibly mean, but I've made quite a few pleasant acquaintances since we arrived.
 +
 +
Coifárë: Oh? Anyone of which your grandmother would approve?
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: So now you take an interest in family affairs... away from whatever other affairs you were up to these past few days?
 +
 +
Coifárë: You know I only follow my heart, at the behest of our lord of Arvandor. .
 +
 +
Coifárë: And, as our family stands in his stead on Arth, my service to them is service to our House.
 +
 +
Coifárë: says in a saccharinely sweet voice.
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: yes, it is service.  Although when it comes to service, while always appreciated, some are just more valuable than others, wouldn't you agree?
 +
 +
Coifárë: Some may have larger or smaller parts to play, perhaps, but all service is valuable. I think there's an Erathin parable to that end that's escaping me at the moment.
 +
 +
Coifárë: Something about striving to be tools of the gods, and I'm sure you are indeed a very important tool, dear cousin.
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: smirks
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: Just as your service remains small
 +
 +
Coifárë: It seems to suit Corellon well enough.
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: looks at the painting
 +
 +
Narrator: (It's a view of the grounds/gardens from one of the balconies.)
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: I can see why you practice so much... Meletharius you are not.
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: give it a few decades, who knows?  I might put one up in my kennel
 +
 +
Coifárë: Nor am I striving to be, but even a pale comparison is a compliment.
 +
 +
Coifárë: Oh, you honor me, to talk of hanging one of my works in your own bedchamber so.
 +
 +
Coifárë: I shall strive to make it worthy of the honor.
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: Oh, you must be thinking of yourself, sleeping with the bitches
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: I'm sure you hang all your artwork there already
 +
 +
Coifárë: I prefer different art in such situations, but it can be aesthetically pleasing.
 +
 +
Coifárë: Perhaps if you had the opportunity to not sleep alone, you might find it so as well, alas.
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: Such is my burden, so close to the throne, I must keep myself secluded, waiting for such that is deserving of my company
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: Sometimes I envy that you have none of that worry
 +
 +
Coifárë: It's certainly more companionable than your...solitude, I must admit.
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: but it passes quckly
 +
 +
Coifárë: I shall say a prayer to Sehanine that her blessings find you, cousin.
 +
 +
Coifárë: I'm sure the favor of a god can overcome any social...distance.
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: Your concern over me is refreshing cousin.  Good to see you will keep me in your prayers.
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: I think the next time I deem to visit one of these estates, I'll have to be a squad with me, just to make sure its safe
 +
 +
Coifárë: Ah, of course. I suppose not everyone is able to manage with a borrowed spear or shield, and we can't have any harm coming to the heir's heir. Better safe than sorry. How did you fare during the raid?
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: You needn't have feared for my well being.  I am more than capable of ensuring its safety.  That is the concern though.  If the raid had not been more haphazard, a real threat could have befallen me.  I do not abide by luck avoiding such threats.
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: Should I have not been a priority for you?  I did not see you trying to seek me out to ensure my saferty.
 +
 +
Gueiris: (safety)
 +
 +
Coifárë: To the contrary, cousin, once I saw the heir to Therma Alba to safety, I and others moved back out the grounds to find any and all who might be in danger.
 +
 +
Coifárë: Luckily, though we didn't find you, you seem to have found your way to safety.
 +
 +
Coifárë: I believe heard it was an outhouse? Something to that effect?
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: If you think to be amusing, I find it lacking.  It's not like I would rely on you for my safety regardless
 +
 +
Coifárë: But upon someone, I'm sure. One of those of 'less valuable service' perhaps?
 +
 +
Coifárë: Be sure to thank them for their leal service, as any good prince would.
 +
 +
Coifárë: For the moment, however, you're blocking my light.
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: Alas, you make the enfeebled assumption that I hold those who serve the throne in low regard.  You mistake your single perspective and make broad assertions, failing to see how singular you are.
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: enjoy your doodling
 +
 +
Calar Brescia: leaves

===Nik and His Father Discuss His Marriage to Lamont===
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: will likely still be busy dealing with the aftermath of the attack, seeing to the wounded and such, but Nik should be able to find him in a quiet moment at some point.
 +
 +
Nik: approaches his father a bit nervously, seeking a time when he's not extremely busy
 +
 +
Narrator: (We'll say Mik is having the closest thing a Regency noble can have to a quick lunch before getting back to work.)
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: Something on your mind, son?
 +
 +
Nik: Yes, Father, I was hoping I could talk with you.  If you're not too busy...
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: gestures for Nik to have a seat.
 +
 +
Nik: comes and sits down
 +
 +
Nik: How are things going, with the people who were injured? Is there still a lot of work to be done?
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: nods.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: For a few of them, but many should be able to travel today, thank the gods.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: All are welcome to stay, of course, but I think many want to return home after...everything.
 +
 +
Nik: nods
 +
 +
Nik: I feel awful that this happened.  I know it isn't my fault, but these people wouldn't have been here if not for me...
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: I would say it's to all our benefit they were, given how many rose in defense.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: There's going to be a lot of work to do to figure out exactly why they attacked and how.
 +
 +
Nik: Do you know anything about that yet?
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: A bit. It seems they were targeting Fyan Nabari, and possibly Hraal Cziernos as well, though how they managed to get so far into our territory with a pack of demons in tow is still unclear.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: shakes his head and sighs.
 +
 +
Nik: sighs as well
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: Some of the cousins are coming to help investigate, and we'll be working with the Palatines and others.
 +
 +
Nik: nods
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: But it may be a while before we know the full story, if at all.
 +
 +
Nik: I hope the truth can be discovered.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: As do we all.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: Something tells me that's not what's troubling you, precisely, though.
 +
 +
Nik: No... well, not exactly.
 +
 +
Nik: Lamont got a letter from his uncle saying he was going to come and pick him up.  It was... well, his messages always seem fine on the surface, but it made Lamont quite distressed.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: frowns.
 +
 +
Nik: So... he is planning to leave and go to Stillmarch, before his uncle can get here.  I was hoping to go with him.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: pauses for a moment.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: That's perfectly acceptable, I suppose...
 +
 +
Nik: Only just for a couple of days.  Then I would go back to Highmark.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: nods.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: That's good. When, ah, when did he ask you to accompany him?
 +
 +
Nik: Yesterday morning...
 +
 +
Nik: I think he intends to depart tomorrow.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: nods.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: pauses just a moment before continuing.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: Nikession, I have to ask...what are your intentions towards Lord Stillmarch?
 +
 +
Nik: looks more nervous
 +
 +
Nik: I... I care for him very deeply.  I know that perhaps you and Mother might not approve...
 +
 +
Nik: tries to gauge how his father is reacting before saying more
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: sighs and shakes his head, but gives a small smile.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: It's not that we disapprove, Nik, it's just...you're very young, and we worry.
 +
 +
Nik: I know that I haven't known him in person for very long, but I've exchanged letters with him for years.  I do feel like I know him very well, despite not having had much time together.
 +
 +
Nik: So... I want to ask for his hand in marriage.
 +
 +
Nik: says, mustering his courage
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: pauses, but manages to contain any reaction beyond that.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: That's a big decision, son.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: I would ask if you're sure, but I know it must have taken a lot to bring it up just now, so I can tell you're serious.
 +
 +
Nik: I know it's a big decision, but it feels like the right one.  I don't know if he'll even accept, though...
 +
 +
Nik: Not because I think he doesn't return my feelings... but he worries about the situation with his uncle, and whether he would... would object, as it would mean Lamont would no longer be under his guardianship, if he was to marry.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: nods slowly.
 +
 +
Nik: Father, his uncle has mistreated Lamont ever since he's had him in his "care"... and Lamont believes he is responsible for the deaths of his brother and his cousin, even if he has no proof of such an evil act...
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: What?
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: Nik, that's a hell of an accusation. I personally don't care for the man, but murder...
 +
 +
Nik: You could see yourself how sick Lamont became under his uncle's supervision, when it should have been something he could have recovered from in a day or two of rest.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: That is true.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: considers.
 +
 +
Nik: I know there is no proof, and it isn't my place to say such things, but I think he means Lamont harm, because ... because Lamont's dragonmark says as much, and I trust him.  I know it sounds crazy.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: His dragonmark?
 +
 +
Nik: Um... well, it tells him people's intentions towards him.  I think it has caused him a great deal of suffering, because he has no way to turn it off, you know? He is always forced to be aware of people's motives when interacting with them.  I probably shouldn't have said as much, it is not something he likes to discuss....
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: That does sound like a difficult burden, and I can imagine it would negatively affect his interactions with people.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: Which, actually, pertains to my concern. Nik, I know you care for Stillmarch, and, again, I think he's a fine fellow, but supporting him does not require marrying him. If what you both suspect is true, it would be putting you at risk.
 +
 +
Nik: But if marriage could help him to be free from his uncle, then... if I could help him that way...
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: I think it's very admirable you want to help, but you need to make sure it is the right thing for you. Will it make you happy? Will it provide the life you want?
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: He's a military man, son. You may not see him for long stretches of time while he's on one campaign or another. Is that something you'll be happy with?
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: I'm not trying to talk you out of anything. I just want to make sure you've considered everything.
 +
 +
Nik: sits quietly for a moment
 +
 +
Nik: I don't know.  But I do know that I don't think I could be happy with someone else, knowing that he remained in such an unhappy state.
 +
 +
Nik: If he was free to make his own choices, and if he told me he did not want to marry me, I could understand that, I suppose, although I would be sad.  But how could I go pursue someone else and leave him to his fate when I know that I could have helped him?  How selfish would I need to be in order to tell a person I love that he is too... too difficult for me to be with?
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: is stoic for a moment, but slowly smiles a resigned smile.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: You love him, hmm?
 +
 +
Nik: nods
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: shakes his head and chuckles a little.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: Corellon preserve me while the Moon Maiden has her fun...
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: There will be a lot of preparations to make, I suppose, once you speak to him about this.
 +
 +
Nik: But he might not even agree...
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: smiles more broadly at that.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: Best not to think like that, son. He'd be a fool to say no, and I wouldn't want you marrying a fool in any case.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: Your mother will be thrilled and terrified in equal measure, of course.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: And there's still his uncle to deal with, the insufferable man.
 +
 +
Nik: smiles hopefully
 +
 +
Nik: Do you think you can keep him occupied here for a little while? So that he doesn't just immediately go to Stillmarch on learning Lamont isn't here? Just... just to give him a day or two to breathe?
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: chuckles and shakes his head.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: I'm sure we can figure it out.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: You mother and I will be the very model of insistent hospitality.
 +
 +
Nik: If pressed, I think Lamont will say he never received any such letter from his uncle, so did not know he was meant to remain here until his arrival.
 +
 +
Nik: I'm sure with all the confusion it would have been quite easy for a letter to not reach its intended recipient.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: A perfectly understandable possibility.
 +
 +
Nik: Father... thank you.  I don't know what will happen, but I feel better knowing that I have your support.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: Always, Nik.
 +
 +
Nik: will give him a hug
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: will happily hug Nik back.

===Leonora and Mikethelas Discover a Clue===
 +
 +
Leonora: will have made time to meet with the Curiate Amathalis on the morning before she andMagga take the airship back to Thantopolis (before heading off to Highmark).
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: will meet with Leonora in his office, and has the look of a man who's been quite busy.
 +
 +
Leonora: will have found whatever outfit she has that is least 'I am on vacation' and most 'This is serious business', but probably hasn't brought anything quite right for that.
 +
 +
Leonora: Thank you for agreeing to meet with me, Curiate Amathalis.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: Of course, Lady Wengal. Or is it Lady Palatine while we're in Thantopolitan territory? Either way, I had been hoping to talk to you. Some of your family is on their way to help with the investigation, but I thought I'd get your first impressions, having been here for the event. First, though, allow me to apologize for the, hmm, excitement, and I hope you and Lord Wengal are faring well?
 +
 +
Leonora: We are well.  My dear husband and I enjoy the sport, actually, though of course, with sadness at the destruction and grief caused.  This is not our first time together in battle, to say the least.
 +
 +
Leonora: And Palatine or Wengal, it is no matter to me, I am, of course, both.
 +
 +
Leonora: I am merely sad for those for whom this was their first experience of Therma Alba, and hope it does not sour them on revisiting in future.  My own summer days spent here as a girl were most formative, for me.  And your hospitality has been, as always, beyond excellent.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: You're very kind to say so, and I'm grateful neither you nor your husband or niece were seriously injured. Thank you again for your aid of Fyan Akan, as well. He speaks very highly of you both.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: Having been out on the grounds during the event itself, what was your impression of the attack?
 +
 +
Leonora: My impressions were twofold.  First, that there was at least some coordination in the attack that suggests that there may have been specific targets, Akan being one of them, but probably not just him.
 +
 +
Leonora: If there were only one target, an assassination rather than a raid would have been called for.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: nods.
 +
 +
Leonora: Second, that the numbers of the assailants were in anticipation of a less vigorous defense of the grounds than the one that your guards, as well as the guests, launched.
 +
 +
Leonora: It could have been much, much worse.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: I thought much the same. They didn't seem entirely prepared, but I suppose it might have been a hasty operation.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: We did find some correspondence on one of the assailants; I thought I would ask you to take a look, if you don't mind.
 +
 +
Leonora: Of course.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: will hand over a letter with a small dried smear of blood on it. It's written in an out-of-date Sentinel cypher, in a familiar handwriting.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: I can't make heads nor tails of it, but I thought perhaps someone with more experience might.
 +
 +
Leonora: pauses over the letter, disturbed.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: What is it?
 +
 +
Leonora: Ahh ... well, the cipher itself is a Sentinel one.  I recognize it, but it would take a little time to work it all out.  I couldn't do it on sight alone, but it would not be exceedingly hard.
 +
 +
Leonora: It's not one that the military would currently be using, though, which is very odd.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: A Sentinel cypher?
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: That's concerning.
 +
 +
Narrator: (I keep misspelling that 😛 )
 +
 +
Leonora: Yes, of that, I am sure.
 +
 +
Leonora: Letters are intercepted, and it would not be unprecedented for the assailants to have done so.
 +
 +
Leonora: But this is not official correspondence, so that raises the question of what it is.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: How long would it take to decode? Do you think they were able to do so?
 +
 +
Leonora: Well, for one thing, almost any cipher can be tackled with magic, by the right person.  And of course, trivially, by anyone who knows the ciphering strategy.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: nods.
 +
 +
Leonora: If they had neither of those, then it would be harder, but then, why would they have brought it with them to Therma Alba?
 +
 +
Leonora: There is ... something else.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: Oh?
 +
 +
Leonora: pauses, trying to figure out whether or how to say this.
 +
 +
Leonora: I could be wrong, but ... I believe I recognize the handwriting.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: You do?
 +
 +
Leonora: I believe so, yes.
 +
 +
Leonora: activates her dragonmark.
 +
 +
Leonora: We are now protected from any external scrutiny.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: frowns and nods.
 +
 +
Leonora: It most closely resembles the handwriting of Mr.Thurston Allard.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: I'm sorry?
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: That seems...remarkably coincidental.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: moves some papers around on his desk and takes out another letter.
 +
 +
Leonora: Mr. Allard and I are well-acquainted.  Some fifteen years ago, we spent quite a lot of time together in anticipation, perhaps, of a betrothal.
 +
 +
Leonora: It did not transpire, for a ... some reasons.  But nonetheless, it would fit.  He would have the requisite military training to know the cipher, but is not currently serving, as far as I know.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: How long would it take to decipher the letter?
 +
 +
Leonora: considers the matter.
 +
 +
Leonora: One advantage we have is that we know some words likely to be in the letter.  Therma Alba, Akan, Stillmarch, ... Lamont ... others.  That would simplify the search.
 +
 +
Leonora: Presuming that the letter bears on the attack, it would be no more than a matter of hours for me to do it.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: How long is it until you and Lord Wengal depart?
 +
 +
Leonora: We had hoped to depart this morning.  But I'm sure I could find an excuse forMagga and I to stay a bit longer.  The next social event in Highmark is not for a little while.  And my father's airship is swift, so the journey will not be overly long.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: I would greatly appreciate it. The best case scenario would be it is actually coincidental, but Mr. Allard is coming to Therma Alba presently, and I should like to be adequately prepared. I am, yet again, in your debt.
 +
 +
Leonora: By presently ... how presently?
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: Within a few days, I believe. I have...been enjoined to keep him here for some time if I am able.
 +
 +
Leonora: Might I inquire, if it is not too personal a matter ... does his visit relate to your son?
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: sighs and chuckles.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: Yes, and Lord Stillmarch.
 +
 +
Leonora: nods.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: My son is doing his best to help Stillmarch avoid his uncle, for which I can blame neither.
 +
 +
Leonora: Where are they now?  Were they returning to Highmark together?
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: Further afield at the moment; they're headed to Stillmarch before going back to Highmark.
 +
 +
Leonora: All right.  I will get to this letter immediately, and avail myself of just a little more of your hospitality until it can be deciphered.
 +
 +
Leonora: Who else knows of the letter's presence here at Therma Alba?
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: No one else just yet. I had thought to ask Fyan Nabari and Hraal Cziernos about it, though.
 +
 +
Leonora: If they cannot be trusted, then our problems are much more serious.
 +
 +
Mikethelas Amathalis: nods.
 +
 +
 +
===A Visit to Stillmarch===
 +
 +
Lamont: will order staff to prepare rooms for his guests once we arrive via the portal, leaving them to scramble to do, leaving us some time to explore that afternoon
 +
 +
Lamont: There's the town, the lake, of course, the orchards....
 +
 +
Lamont: what would you like to see?
 +
 +
Lamont: There's the mountains as well, but theyr're more hazardous at this time of year.
 +
 +
Nik: You've said the lake is quite remarkable, I'd like to see that if we can?
 +
 +
Coifárë: That works for me. I want to see everything.
 +
 +
Lamont: We won't be here long enough, I expect...
 +
 +
Lamont: can take people out to one of the ramparts so you can get a sense of the scope of the lake
 +
 +
Coifárë: will lean on the merlon to look out over the estate.
 +
 +
Lamont: (YOu can probably see the mountains as well, hemming in the horizon, but only the still white capped peaks in the far distance, the water stretching out for miles and miles)
 +
 +
Coifárë: It's beautiful, Lamont.
 +
 +
Nik: It's bigger than I expected.
 +
 +
Nik: and yes, very beautiful!
 +
 +
Coifárë: And, of course, very defensible.
 +
 +
Lamont: nods
 +
 +
Coifárë: looks over their shoulder to give Lamont a smile.
 +
 +
Coifárë: When was the last time you were here?
 +
 +
Lamont: oh...
 +
 +
Lamont: thinks back
 +
 +
Lamont: Probably close to two years, if not more
 +
 +
Nik: Oh... that's far too long to be away from your home.  Hopefully it won't be as long before you are back here again in the future.
 +
 +
Lamont: smiles a bit moreosely
 +
 +
Lamont: In the future, perhaps.
 +
 +
Lamont: Would you like to go down to the shore?
 +
 +
Coifárë: looks to Nik.
 +
 +
Nik: Certainly 🙂
 +
 +
Lamont: can lead you both down out of the keep and through an ornamental garden to the actual lake shore, which is more rocky than beach-y, but there are paths and stairs worn and cut out in place over the many years
 +
 +
Coifárë: Oh, I bet this is fantastic for swimming in the summer.
 +
 +
Nik: Is the water very cold?
 +
 +
Lamont: it's extremely cold
 +
 +
Lamont: There's an area to the west where there's a more suitable beach - the drop off is less extreme and the water there warm more
 +
 +
Nik: You know what would be perfect, if there was a good spot for it, is a sauna - you could go in and get all hot and sweaty, then run out and jump in the lake to cool off, then go back to warm up again...
 +
 +
Nik: seems like this is a mental image he quite enjoys ;)
 +
 +
Lamont: I think there is one at the beach house.....
 +
 +
Nik: oh, marvellous 🙂
 +
 +
Coifárë: smiles at that.
 +
 +
Lamont: but we have done similar things here
 +
 +
Lamont: less a sauna and more a bonfire to return to....
 +
 +
Nik: nods, smiling
 +
 +
Lamont: There's something of a custom for winter bathing
 +
 +
Coifárë: Oh?
 +
 +
Lamont: Oh, you cut a big hole in the ice
 +
 +
Lamont: in and out quickly, and then to the fires, with hot drinks and blankets and so on....  it's very invigorating, but not for everyone
 +
 +
Nik: I'd like to try that someday.
 +
 +
Lamont: nods
 +
 +
Lamont: There are plenty of other winter activities.... skating and skiing and so on
 +
 +
Coifárë: I will stick with the latter, with as much bundling as possible.
 +
 +
Coifárë: You northerners and your love of cold...
 +
 +
Lamont: smiles
 +
 +
Lamont: It's beautiful in the winter
 +
 +
Lamont: especially if there's been wind to blow the show off the lake
 +
 +
Lamont: the ice is so clear when its cold
 +
 +
Nik: you make it sound beautiful.
 +
 +
Coifárë: smiles at Lamont's description, and his seeming in better spirits.
 +
 +
Lamont: it is.
 +
 +
Nik: we will need to come back in the winter, then.  And with plenty of warm blankets 🙂
 +
 +
Nik: says with a smile to Coifare
 +
 +
Lamont: will sit and pull off his boots so he can dip his toes in the water, even if it is freezing cold still
 +
 +
Lamont: I am biased as to the beauty here, I know, but I have never been anywhre with a more stunning winter
 +
 +
Nik: will remove his shoes and gingerly lift his robes so he can wade as well.
 +
 +
Lamont: be careful
 +
 +
Coifárë: I would imagine even our deepest winters in Vilyawen would be like autumn to you.
 +
 +
Lamont: the stone is slippery and it drops off quickly
 +
 +
Nik: nods
 +
 +
Coifárë: will sit on the shore, far enough back so as not to get wet.
 +
 +
Nik: I'll be careful...
 +
 +
Lamont: keeps a sharp eye on Nik just in case
 +
 +
Lamont: Autum is nice.
 +
 +
Coifárë: I am, of course, biased on multiple levels.
 +
 +
Lamont: smiles and glances back at them
 +
 +
Lamont: I will say the advantage of the northern clime is that our summers are only pleasantly hot
 +
 +
Lamont: Someday, it will feel more like my own place, and we shall come and go as we please, whatever the season
 +
 +
Coifárë: smiles.
 +
 +
Coifárë: I'm glad to hear you say that.
 +
 +
Lamont: takes a deep breath
 +
 +
Lamont: Hopefully, someday soon.
 +
 +
Coifárë: nods.
 +
 +
Lamont: Come back in Nik there's something else I want to show you....
 +
 +
Nik: oh, very well 🙂
 +
 +
Nik: will come back to shore and slip his shoes back on (wetly)
 +
 +
Lamont: will lead you a little further down the shorline to an area where there's  like a little stone dock, and go to the end and pull something up in a basket
 +
 +
Coifárë: watches curiously.
 +
 +
Lamont: will pull out a glass bottle that's been sealed with wax
 +
 +
Lamont: would you care for a chilled drink?
 +
 +
Nik: ooh 🙂
 +
 +
Lamont: seems to have some practice at releasing the stopper
 +
 +
Lamont: No glasses I'm afraid
 +
 +
Coifárë: I'm sure we can manage.
 +
 +
Lamont: can pass around a bottle of chilled cherry infused cider
 +
 +
Lamont: will pour a little bit out into the lake as well, out of habit
 +
 +
Nik: is there just always a bottle there, or did you plant this ahead of time? 😉
 +
 +
Lamont: There usually are
 +
 +
Lamont: I haven't been back long enough to plant anything, but Arnaud used to stash things all over the place along the shore.
 +
 +
Lamont: I'm sure there's still things tucked away
 +
 +
Nik: nods
 +
 +
Coifárë: It's very nice.
 +
 +
Coifárë: And the pouring out...?
 +
 +
Nik: like a little gift left for you
 +
 +
Lamont: oh, for the guardian
 +
 +
Lamont: says to Coifare after a nod to Nik
 +
 +
Coifárë: will step to the end of the dock and look out over the lake.
 +
 +
Coifárë: Thank you.
 +
 +
Lamont: You might see it....  you never know.  Keep an eye out for a flash of white
 +
 +
 +
===The Proposal===
 +
 +
Nik: will go for a walk with Lamont in the orchard later in the afternoon
 +
 +
Lamont: will take his arm and everything
 +
 +
Nik: is a bit nervous, which probably you could pick up on even without your dragonmark
 +
 +
Lamont: Is everything alright?
 +
 +
Nik: Oh, yes! I was just... hoping to have a chance to talk with you privately, and now I do.
 +
 +
Lamont: asks, pausing between rows of sweet smelling fruit trees in full blossom, petals occasionally drifting down
 +
 +
Lamont: What is it?
 +
 +
Nik: takes a deep breath and gathers his composure as best as he can, then takes a folded piece of paper out of a pocket inside his robe.
 +
 +
Nik: I hope it's okay if I read this to you.
 +
 +
Lamont: ...alright...
 +
 +
Nik: clears his throat and will begin to read the note
 +
 +
Nik: Lamont...
 +
 +
Nik: It's always been easier for me to express myself in writing, because I have time to think about my words and not get nervous.  I've spent so much time writing and re-writing what I want to say to you, trying to make sure it comes out right, because I wanted this moment to be perfect.
 +
 +
Nik: For many years, your letters helped to sustain me when I was alone. Today, I am writing this letter to you to let you know that you are not alone.  I love you, Lamont, with all my heart. Every time I think surely it would be impossible to love you more, I look at you and fall further in love.  You have been my best friend, my trusted protector, my guiding star in the dark, and I want to be those things for you as well, if you'll have me.  I want to join my home and my life and my future with yours, whatever that brings.
 +
 +
Nik: The days we've spent together so far can be counted on both hands, but they have been the happiest, most exciting, and most precious of my life. I hope that there will be many more like them to come, and I will do everything in my power to make you happy too. But even if I knew that we would only have one more day together, or one more week, or one year, I would still want to be by your side for however long the gods grant us.
 +
 +
Nik: I am already yours in body, mind, and soul.  Will you be mine, and do me the honour of accepting my hand in marriage?
 +
 +
Lamont: ...
 +
 +
Lamont: will pull Nik into an embrace and just hold him
 +
 +
Nik: um... then it's signed "Nikession"... but I guess that part was obvious...
 +
 +
Nik: says, slightly muffled, against your shoulder
 +
 +
Lamont: Nik....
 +
 +
Lamont: I love you.
 +
 +
Lamont: I want that.
 +
 +
Nik: smiles
 +
 +
Lamont: smiffs
 +
 +
Lamont: When....
 +
 +
Lamont: When I can say yes.  I will.
 +
 +
Nik: when...?
 +
 +
Lamont: sniffs again and holds him tighter
 +
 +
Lamont: It's not.... I can't...  It's not in my hands
 +
 +
Lamont: I want it....
 +
 +
Nik: looks confused
 +
 +
Nik: if you want it, then you could say yes
 +
 +
Lamont: If I say it.... and then.... if he doesn't agree...
 +
 +
Nik: pulls himself back slightly
 +
 +
Lamont: No...
 +
 +
Nik: Then what?
 +
 +
Lamont: pulls him right back, like he cant bear to let him go
 +
 +
Nik: I was willing to take risks and face uncertainty for us to be together.  If you aren't, then... then can I really believe that you mean it when you say you love me?
 +
 +
Lamont: I don't know.
 +
 +
Lamont: I'm sorry.
 +
 +
Lamont: I'll make it work
 +
 +
Lamont: I'll do it
 +
 +
Nik: do what?
 +
 +
Lamont: Whatever I must to marry you.
 +
 +
Lamont: is crying
 +
 +
Nik: holds you close
 +
 +
Nik: please, don't cry... I don't want you to be sad...
 +
 +
Lamont: will try an pull himself together for you
 +
 +
Nik: has a few tears too
 +
 +
Lamont: You make me very happy
 +
 +
Nik: You make me happy too.  I love you, Lamont.
 +
 +
Lamont: Nik....  Nikession.  I love you so much.  You honour me.  I accept.
 +
 +
Lamont: will give you a very messy but passionate kiss
 +
 +
Nik: does burst into real tears at that, but also kisses back
 +
 +
Lamont: (some time later...)
 +
 +
Nik: gods... we are such a mess
 +
 +
Lamont: laughs breathlessly
 +
 +
Nik: says somewhat later, picking petals out of his hair
 +
 +
Lamont: You're beautiful
 +
 +
Nik: you too :3 I love seeing you smile like that.
 +
 +
Lamont: smooths out Nik's hair a bit , and will pull him to sit with him, back against a tree trunk
 +
 +
Nik: pulls his pink and green robe back into some semblance of order, at least enough to give him something between him and the tree bark
 +
 +
Lamont: There are.... so many things still. to say
 +
 +
Nik: nods
 +
 +
Lamont: Please....  I know I can be difficult
 +
 +
Lamont: Don't doubt that I want this
 +
 +
Nik: I don't.
 +
 +
Lamont: It's hard for me to see things simply, that's all
 +
 +
Nik: I said to my father when I told him I was intending to propose, that I would have to be very selfish to tell someone I love that he was too difficult to be with.  I know that your circumstances are a large part of that difficulty, and we can work through that together.
 +
 +
Lamont: ...your father?
 +
 +
Nik: nods
 +
 +
Nik: Well, I did think I ought to make sure he was not inclined to oppose such a match, in case you did agree...
 +
 +
Lamont: He agreed?
 +
 +
Nik: Yes.
 +
 +
Lamont: takes a moment to process that
 +
 +
Nik: I think he said you were a "fine fellow"
 +
 +
Lamont: I see.
 +
 +
Lamont: That is... some relief
 +
 +
Lamont: There is also....
 +
 +
Lamont: Nik, my heart is...
 +
 +
Lamont: I don't know the words
 +
 +
Lamont: I love you
 +
 +
Nik: nods, listening
 +
 +
Lamont: But there is Coifare, too, whom I also love...
 +
 +
Nik: Oh, yes.  I spoke with them too...
 +
 +
Nik: Actually they were very helpful at allowing me to get my own thoughts in order.
 +
 +
Lamont: ...what did they say?
 +
 +
Nik: Well... they encouraged me to tell you my feelings.  And some other things that are perhaps not my place to say, but you know... that they care for you very much too.  I wanted them to know that whatever happened with us, I wasn't going to... I don't know, push them out or anything.
 +
 +
Lamont: ...alright.
 +
 +
Nik: I care for them too - I haven't known them for as long as you have, but they've been very kind to me and I admire them greatly.
 +
 +
Lamont: ...thank you.
 +
 +
Lamont: I would like to speak to them...
 +
 +
Nik: Of course.
 +
 +
Nik: Do you want me to go with you, or you want to go alone?
 +
 +
Lamont: Alone.
 +
 +
Nik: nods
 +
 +
Lamont: but listen.
 +
 +
Lamont: I know that you love me
 +
 +
Lamont: I don't ever want that to be...  something you can't bear, for any reason, or for it to hold you back...
 +
 +
Nik: considers that for a moment before responding
 +
 +
Nik: My father cautioned me that there would likely be obstacles ahead, but I said the same thing to him that I will to you.  I would rather face those obstacles with you, than find someone else.
 +
 +
Nik: gives you a kiss
 +
 +
Lamont: nods, grasping your hand tightly, and will lean over to kiss your temple
 +
 +
Nik: So I'll be honest with you and tell you if something is troubling me, but you are not a burden to bear.
 +
 +
Lamont: thank you
 +
 +
Nik: but now - if you want to go talk to Coifare, you should do that.  I'll retire to my bedchamber, so if you do want to find me later, you know where I'll be...
 +
 +
Lamont: I think perhaps, this evening.  I need some time to think
 +
 +
 +
===Lamont Brings Coifárë to the Lake===
 +
 +
Lamont: will come knock on Coifare's chamber door  in the late evening
 +
 +
Coifárë: will put down the book they're reading and come answer the door, smiling when they see Lamont.
 +
 +
Coifárë: Oh, what a pleasant surprise to run into you here. Please come in.
 +
 +
Lamont: actually, would you walk with me?
 +
 +
Coifárë: Oh, uh, of course. Give me just a moment.
 +
 +
Coifárë: will go get a robe or other outerwear to put on to be more 'presentable'.
 +
 +
Lamont: nods and will give them a moment to, presumably, put on something
 +
 +
Lamont: will offer them his arm
 +
 +
Lamont: There's something I wanted to show you
 +
 +
Coifárë: takes Lamont's arm.
 +
 +
Coifárë: I'm intrigued. Should I ask, or let it be a surprise?
 +
 +
Lamont: I think it will work as a surprise.  I apologize in advance for all of the stairs, however.
 +
 +
Coifárë: smiles.
 +
 +
Coifárë: I'm sure I'll be fine, and I have support if you manage to tire me out.
 +
 +
Lamont: smirks at that, blushing slightly, and will lead them up to the top of the keep's tallest tower, which does in fact have a lot of stairs and such, but they can always take some breaks along the way to build the suspense ;)
 +
 +
Lamont: Fortunately, there's only a very light wind off the lake tonight, but if you're chilled, you can have my coat
 +
 +
Coifárë: I'll keep that in mind, thank you.
 +
 +
Coifárë: There are plenty of ways to keep warm, of course.
 +
 +
Narrator: (Is this when they're already at the top of the tower?)
 +
 +
Lamont: Oh, of course....
 +
 +
Lamont: (Just about to head outside)
 +
 +
Narrator: (kk)
 +
 +
Coifárë: is happy to be led wherever.
 +
 +
Lamont: will then lead them out, to the highest point of view for the lake without going into the mountains, with the stars reflected perfectly in the calm waters, and the moon, large and bright, in the center of the waters, looking essentially like an iris of a large, dark, starry eye
 +
 +
Lamont: It's more striking an effect from the air, or from higher in the mountains.  There's a place by the north lodge that ideal, but it's quite far for such a short trip...
 +
 +
Lamont: But still, I thought you would like to see it
 +
 +
Coifárë: (elduar) Oh my gods...
 +
 +
Coifárë: Lamont, it's...beautiful.
 +
 +
Coifárë: I don't know what to...thank you.
 +
 +
Lamont: I've wanted to show you for a long time
 +
 +
Coifárë: (elduar) And thanks to you as well, lord of beauty, for this wonder.
 +
 +
Coifárë: I think I would stay up here all the time if I'd grown up here.
 +
 +
Coifárë: Other than the cold, of course, but I'd wrap myself til I was a sphere for this.
 +
 +
Coifárë: is still looking out over the sight, but will reach for Lamont's hand.
 +
 +
Lamont: I have spent a lot of time here
 +
 +
Lamont: will take it
 +
 +
Lamont: It was always a good place to be alone
 +
 +
Coifárë: Then I'm honored you've shared it with me.
 +
 +
Lamont: I.....I have many things I would share with you, and gladly
 +
 +
Lamont: I think  you know.....  earlier, this afternoon, Nik asked me to marry him
 +
 +
Coifárë: I... had an inkling.
 +
 +
Coifárë: smiles.
 +
 +
Lamont: I accepted, despite my fears...
 +
 +
Coifárë: I'm glad to hear that. He loves you very much.
 +
 +
Coifárë: squeezes Lamont's hand.
 +
 +
Lamont: squeezes back
 +
 +
Lamont: I love him too.
 +
 +
Lamont: And you.... You have taught me so much about love
 +
 +
Coifárë: I will take that in the spirit I believe it is intended, and refrain from a typical response.
 +
 +
Coifárë: I feel like I've had quite the education in that regard in the last few weeks myself.
 +
 +
Lamont: smiles a bit wryly
 +
 +
Lamont: how do you mean?
 +
 +
Coifárë: smiles wistfully and places a hand on Lamont's cheek.
 +
 +
Coifárë: I love you, Lamont, and I love Nik, but...I'm not sure I love you the way that Nik does, or possibly how you love him. I hope...I hope what I have to offer doesn't pale in comparison.
 +
 +
Lamont: Must it be like that, with... judgements and assessments
 +
 +
Coifárë: I hope not, but I worry...
 +
 +
Lamont: I worry.
 +
 +
Lamont: I was afraid.... I am afraid.  That you... might think I am... happy enough?  Satisfied? and..
 +
 +
Lamont: I cherish all you have to offer me.
 +
 +
Coifárë: I could not have put it better.
 +
 +
Coifárë: will move to kiss Lamont.
 +
 +
Lamont: will kiss them back
 +
 +
Coifárë: (after a moment, pulling back) I want you to be happy and satisfied and safe and content and well. And I want to help provide that.
 +
 +
Lamont: I want that for you....  I want you to feel... free, to be who you are
 +
 +
Coifárë: You said something, back in Therma Alba, about being a 'single bloom' in my 'glorious garden'. I hope you realize there is a world of difference between being 'single' and being 'singular'.
 +
 +
Coifárë: Yes, I love others. But I also love you, Lamont Allard. I love the way your hair tousles when you've been riding. I love the little frown you get when you're concentrating on...anything. I love your protectiveness and your honor and your loyalty. I truly hope you see, I love you, for who you are.
 +
 +
Lamont: I believe you.
 +
 +
Coifárë: smirks.
 +
 +
Coifárë: That's good. I try not to lie, so I'd hate for someone to get the wrong impression of me.
 +
 +
Lamont: Your love will always feel special to me
 +
 +
Coifárë: And yours to me.
 +
 +
Lamont: Then that's enough, isn't it?
 +
 +
Coifárë: It is for me.
 +
 +
Lamont: then - please know you are welcome in my... mine and Nik's.... home, anytime, no matter where we make it.
 +
 +
Lamont: We will always make space for you, as long as you desire it
 +
 +
Coifárë: You're truly testing my ability to refrain from innuendo, but I appreciate and mirror the sentiment.
 +
 +
Lamont: smirks
 +
 +
Lamont: Well I did almost say bed but I didn't want to be so limiting
 +
 +
Coifárë: smiles.
 +
 +
Coifárë: You know me well.
 +
 +
Lamont: and I welcome all of your innuendos
 +
 +
Coifárë: There will be so much more to come. 😉
 +
 +
Lamont: Well... if you promise, I shall do my best to provide proper set ups...
 +
 +
Lamont: will draw them closer and make good on that >:3

===Lavinia Talks to Her Sister About Her Future===
 +
 +
Katherina: barges into her sister's room and flops down on her bed
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): Kitty! How are you feeling?
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): is sitting with her arm in a sling.
 +
 +
Katherina: I am SO glad to be home, after all of that!
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): It was terribly distressing, yes.
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): does not seem all that distressed, honestly.
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): I was so worried that you and mother had gotten hurt or... worse.
 +
 +
Katherina: Well physically we were fine, I still dont' think I have recovered from being so suffocated by His Highness's ego :p
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): Surely it couldn't have been THAT bad...
 +
 +
Katherina: I was very relieved to be rescued.  I'm glad to know not all of House Brescia is like that.  How is your arm?

 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): Mostly better. I'm told that even with the healing potion there will be some scarring, though.
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): But I suppose it's better than being digested by a demon.
 +
 +
Katherina: nods
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): Besides, I believe that scars might actually be a bonus to Gueir... Lord Kyrnon.
 +
 +
Katherina: I haven't had a chance to ask what happened there....  You're reconciled somehow?  what happened?
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): Apparently he had sent me a letter last week that I never received about how he would be there with Magus Auspex because his mother instisted, but he had already told her that nothing would come of it because of me. I feel like an idiot. I shouldn't have been so quick to assume the worst.
 +
 +
Katherina: Ugh!  Do you believe him?  I mean, I suppose it makes sense, but he coudl have just used his words to say so when I asked, goodness!
 +
 +
Katherina: His attitude certainly did not help :p
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): I do. When he came to rescue me he... he had to use his gift on me, to give me energy. It was like... like I could feel his soul. I've never felt anything like it.
 +
 +
Katherina: His attitude certainly did not help :p
 +
 +
Katherina: Feel his soul  :o
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): I don't know how else to ddescribe it
 +
 +
Katherina: that sounds....exceedingly intimate :o
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): It... was.
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): Suffice to say, I do not doubt his affections.
 +
 +
Katherina: frowns
 +
 +
Katherina: well....  if you're sure....  you know though, for a man to uh... share himself intimately does not mean his heart is true....
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): When he came back to Therma Alba, he didn't look for Juno. He came straight to my room.
 +
 +
Katherina: Well, she is a soldier!  surely she could take care fo her self to some extent...
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): Trust me, Kitty.
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): I don't know much, but I know this.
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): Though I do wish I knew what happened to that letter.
 +
 +
Katherina: Oh, I hate that you had such distress over it!
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): I suppose that distress is how we grow.
 +
 +
Katherina: makes a face
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): I am sure you must have grown immeasurably from your imprisonment with Lord Brescia.
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): teases
 +
 +
Katherina: grown disgusted perhaps
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): laughs
 +
 +
Katherina: But now what?  You will resume your courtship?  What about magus Auspex?
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): With all the demons and such we didn't really have time to disuss it, but I think it's safe to say that yes, we will be moving ahead with things. I hope to be able to ask mother for her blessing by the end of the season.
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): From what Gueiris said, Juno is fine with the situation. She has other prospects.
 +
 +
Katherina: Oh well, good for her then, I suppose.
 +
 +
Katherina: Well then....  I shall be happy for you, and you know I will help however I can:3
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): smiles and throws her good arm around you.
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): Oh, I know you shall, Kitty!
 +
 +
Katherina: hugs back
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): And I will be happy for you, whatever you decide for your future.
 +
 +
Katherina: no wonder you seem so calm - I was afraid it was the shock, but now I see it is just a meanseure of peace :3
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): It's a lot of things, I suppose.
 +
 +
Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): I never thought that I would ever get to live the adventures that I had dreamed of as a girl, but now it looks like not only will I have that chance, but... I'll have someone to live them with.

===Tea Time With Nik and Chitara===
 +
 +
Chitara: will come over once the boys return to Highmark
 +
 +
Nik: welcomes Chitara for tea
 +
 +
Nik: I'm so glad you could make it! I know you're busy with so many political meetings and affairs at the moment.
 +
 +
Chitara: Well, yes, but I've always got time to see you
 +
 +
Nik: smiles warmly at that
 +
 +
Nik: So, tell me - was Therma Alba everything you hoped it would be? I know the ending was a bit... not ideal.... but other than that?
 +
 +
Chitara: grins and also blushes a little
 +
 +
Oh, I had a wonderful time. Even if the ending was not great
 +
 +
Nik: I'm glad to hear that.  Was there anything in particular that stood out, or simply enjoying the surroundings?
 +
 +
Chitara: The company was also excellent
 +
 +
Nik: I thought so too!
 +
 +
Nik: If you can keep a secret...
 +
 +
Chitara: You know I can
 +
 +
Nik: looks around in case, but leans in closer
 +
 +
Nik: I became engaged to Lord Stillmarch! We haven't said anything publicly yet, as it still requires some... negotiations... family matters, you know.  But I'm very excited about it!
 +
 +
Chitara: covers her mouth so as not to squee
 +
 +
I'm so happy for you!
 +
 +
Nik: grins
 +
 +
Nik: Well, thank you!  I know it probably seems quite sudden, but I've known him for many years, at least through letters.
 +
 +
Chitara: Well, if all goes well within a few weeks I'll have an engagement to announce with someone I've known for way less than you've known him, so I'm no one to judge
 +
 +
Nik: oh really? how exciting!
 +
 +
Nik: Can you tell me who it is, or is it a secret still?
 +
 +
Chitara: Well, it would be a secret, but I can share with you. I spent most of the weekend at Therma Alba with Duke Harcourt.
 +
 +
Nik: Oh, he's very handsome!
 +
 +
Chitara: He's also very talented.
 +
 +
winks
 +
 +
But also, we're pretty well suited, and I have come to something of an unofficial arrangement with his excellent sister.
 +
 +
Nik: Oh, well, that's marvellous! I wish you all the very best, and hope that it will all come together flawlessly 🙂
 +
 +
Nik: That would certainly be a very... advantageous match, I believe.
 +
 +
Chitara: It is a much more advantageous match than I had expected to find
 +
 +
Nik: If it isn't too impertinent a question - will his position be of benefit to your cause? I don't mean to suggest that's why you would fancy him, of course.  But surely, a duke would be quite a political coup.
 +
 +
Chitara: Well, yes.
 +
 +
shrugs
 +
 +
I won't lie and say it doesn't factor in. I have been under orders to find someone from a Marked house to marry, the exciting part is that we're actually... suited. I think I will enjoy being married to him
 +
 +
Nik: That's wonderful to hear.  I really am glad for you! I know that it isn't always possible to put aside political considerations, but if they coincide with your own desires, then that's the best possible outcome 🙂
 +
 +
Chitara: I entirely agree. I could not have hoped for any more
 +
 +
Nik: I look forward to celebrating once the news is all finalized and announced!
 +
 +
Chitara: As will I, when yours is formally announced! I'm so delighted for you both
 +
 +
Nik: Are you planning any gatherings further on in the season?
 +
 +
Chitara: Oh, yes, we're having an Akhasic expo that will culminate in a ball. We haven't sent out invitations quite yet but you will of course be invited, as will your fiancee
 +
 +
Nik: That should be a very exciting event! I'm already looking forward to it 😄
 +
 +
Chitara: That is the hope. We're trying to really make sure everyone can get a look at what we could bring if we were incorporated
 +
 +
Nik: Well, you know that you have my support, for whatever small value that has in the grand scheme of things.
 +
 +
Chitara: I do appreciate it. You're a more valuable ally than you think, especially now that you are Interesting to Society. You can't underestimate how much interesting people supporting a cause can do.
 +
 +
Nik: laughs lightly at that
 +
 +
Nik: Interesting? Me? I don't know why I would be, but thank you for saying so 🙂
 +
 +
Chitara: Well, you just had this house party that got attacked and defended by genuine celebrities. And now you're about to get married to the tragically ill boy from earlier in the season
 +
 +
Nik: nods a bit more seriously
 +
 +
Nik: I suppose it is as you say... although it wasn't my intention.
 +
 +
Chitara: Well, thankfully it doesn't have to be intentional.
 +
 +
Nik: nods
 +
 +
Chitara: But... I'm not in the know and I don't have to be to know something's going on. Is there anything I can do to help you and Lamont?
 +
 +
Nik: Oh... well... it's complicated.  My family quite support the match, but our worry is that his uncle may refuse.
 +
 +
Chitara: But why? You're an excellent match for him, aren't you? Is there some political nuance I'm missing or is his uncle just an ass?
 +
 +
Nik: Um... it's a delicate situation.  Lamont's uncle is his guardian until he turns 25 or marries, and so he has control over Lamont's wealth until that point.  And... he has shown signs that he doesn't want to let that power go so easily.  He might not object, I don't know for sure - it's only a worry at this point.
 +
 +
Chitara: sighs
 +
 +
Ah, of course. The things people do for power.
 +
 +
Nik: nods gloomily
 +
 +
Nik: So I don't know that there is much that you could do, unless you wanted to bribe him or something.
 +
 +
Nik: says as a joke
 +
 +
Chitara: laughs
 +
 +
No, but if nothing else I can hide him away. That's... kind of what I do.
 +
 +
Nik: chuckles at that
 +
 +
Nik: I'll let you know if it comes to that, I suppose!
 +
 +
Chitara: nods
 +
 +
Seriously, if at any point I can be of help, let me know. You're one of my oldest and dearest friends.
 +
 +
Nik: I appreciate that.  I do mean it when I say I'll bear it in mind, if anything does occur to me.
 +
 +
Chitara: Good. And good luck dealing with the elder Stillmarch.
 +
 +
Nik: Thank you.  And best of luck to you as well in securing your Duke.
 +
 +
Chitara: Thank you, I appreciate it
 +
 +

===Leonora Hosts Nik and Lamont===
 +
 +
Leonora: will have arranged for a sitting room to be set up for her guests, in advance.
 +
 +
Magga: will wear a respectable jacket and tie, so as to make a good impression on these guests
 +
 +
Leonora: You look fine, dear.  Don't play with your tie, it's perfectly straight.
 +
 +
Lamont: has probably not told Nik a lot, only that he has some significant business that he shoudl be part of, if they are to be married, and that Lady Leonora has offered her friendship and support
 +
 +
Magga: Hmph, fine.
 +
 +
Nik: is curious but will accompany Lamont gladly, of course
 +
 +
Leonora: has got herself a glass of wine already, to get ready to share the news with Lamont.
 +
 +
Lamont: will  let the servants announce himself and Nik, and presumably  be seen inside to wherever our hosts have set up
 +
 +
Leonora: Ah, Evenor, Stillmarch, good evening.
 +
 +
Leonora: And you both know my husband, Lord Wengal?
 +
 +
Lamont: yes, good evening.  Thank you for seeing us
 +
 +
Nik: Good evening, a pleasure to see you both.
 +
 +
Magga: nods politely
 +
 +
Magga: Yes, good evening.  Have a seat, please.  Some wine?
 +
 +
Nik: Thank you, that's very kind.
 +
 +
Leonora: sits and takes a more-than-average sip of her wine, then pauses for a moment to collect her thoughts.
 +
 +
Lamont: Yes, thank you
 +
 +
Leonora: Stillmarch ... I know we have the matter to discuss that has been the subject of our discussions previously.
 +
 +
Leonora: And we will discuss that.
 +
 +
Lamont: knows now that he probably will need it :V
 +
 +
Leonora: But first there is a different matter to which we must attend.
 +
 +
Leonora: activates her dragonmark.
 +
 +
Leonora: This conversation must be, for now at least, in absolute privacy.
 +
 +
Lamont: what is it?
 +
 +
Lamont: asks, sounding concerned
 +
 +
Leonora: After the recent events at Therma Alba, there was a discovery made, on one of the bodies of the attackers.
 +
 +
Leonora: Shortly before I left to return to Highmark, your father, Lord Evenor, he shared with me this letter.
 +
 +
Leonora: hands it over to Lamont.
 +
 +
Lamont: looks it over
 +
 +
Lamont: ...
 +
 +
Lamont: looks back up at her sharply
 +
 +
Leonora: It is in a cipher, of the sort used by the Sentinel house, perhaps some years ago.  Not a current code, you understand.
 +
 +
Leonora: You recognize the hand, do you not?
 +
 +
Lamont: Yes.
 +
 +
Nik: leans over slightly so he can peek at it too, although it doesn't mean much to him at the moment
 +
 +
Lamont: It's from my uncle.
 +
 +
Lamont: Why...
 +
 +
Lamont: what does it say?
 +
 +
Lamont: says peering at it as though he can maybe figure it out
 +
 +
Leonora: It took me some hours to decipher it.  But ultimately it surrendered its secrets.
 +
 +
Leonora: It discusses the presence of several key persons who would be at Therma Alba, and the dates of their presence.  Fyan Akan Nabari was named, for instance.  And so, too, were you.
 +
 +
Lamont: what?
 +
 +
Leonora: nods.
 +
 +
Nik: frowns
 +
 +
Leonora: It is a description, in your uncle's hand, of key persons to be present, at the time the attack happened, found on the corpse of one of them.
 +
 +
Leonora: I should add that it is neither signed by him, nor is it addressed to anyone in particular who could be identifiable.
 +
 +
Lamont: looks at Nik, and will take his hand, and then back to Leonora
 +
 +
Leonora: Can you think of any reason why he would be sending this letter innocuously, and it was simply intercepted?
 +
 +
Lamont: I... I don't know.  I'm sure he could give some reason.
 +
 +
Nik: squeezes Lamont's hand
 +
 +
Nik: My father gave this to you?
 +
 +
Leonora: He did, Lord Evenor.  In my capacity as an officer of the military intelligence division of the city of Nachtur, and of House Palatine.
 +
 +
Nik: oh, I see... how did he get it?
 +
 +
Lamont: Presumably, if it was found with one of the attackers, it was brought to him for that reason....
 +
 +
Nik: nods
 +
 +
Leonora: From the guards at Therma Alba.  Its existence is known only very, very narrowly.
 +
 +
Leonora: Your father was also planning on sharing its contents with Fyan Akan Nabari, as well as Hraal Cziernos.  But no others.
 +
 +
Leonora: I have the original, specifically, with the goal of sharing it with you, Stillmarch, to see if you knew the hand as well as I thought I did.
 +
 +
Leonora: Regrettably, it seems we both know it well enough.
 +
 +
Lamont: nods, looking grim
 +
 +
Leonora: Is there some other context that I should have to understand this?  Why would ... why?
 +
 +
Lamont: looks at Nik again, and looks distraught
 +
 +
Lamont: That is too far... isn't it?  Even for him....
 +
 +
Nik: do you think it was ... that the attack was his plan?
 +
 +
Leonora: No, I can't imagine that would be the case.  These cultists have been causing trouble for a long time, and Akan's visit to Therma Alba was to recuperate from a previous incursion.
 +
 +
Leonora: But perhaps he had an arrangement with someone, to provide them information about when and where certain people would be, that served some other purpose for him?
 +
 +
Lamont: is doing his best to stay composed but is clearly extremely upset nonetheless
 +
 +
Nik: Lamont... this could be the proof that you are not wrong about him.
 +
 +
Lamont: some other purpose.... how terrible
 +
 +
Leonora: So here we are.  I know this must come as a shock.    I am angered and perplexed, all at once.
 +
 +
Lamont: nods
 +
 +
Leonora: I know this was not the matter you hoped we would discuss tonight, but I think you will agree that this needs to be addressed far more urgently.
 +
 +
Lamont: Of course.
 +
 +
Lamont: What... what will happen?
 +
 +
Leonora: That is quite unclear to me at present.  Who would hold the jurisdiction to demand answers from your uncle?  I am no legal mind, but this is clearly not simple.
 +
 +
Leonora: I was hoping that you would have some sense of a course of action you might want to pursue, and in which we could help you, perhaps, if you were willing.
 +
 +
Lamont: Lady Machel, or her parents, certainly
 +
 +
Leonora: nods.
 +
 +
Leonora: I will caution you, that none of this will be simple or fast, necessarily.
 +
 +
Leonora: And as your guardian, I presume he still has broad authority over much of your life.
 +
 +
Lamont: nods
 +
 +
Leonora: Your life, the past several years, it has not been an easy one, has it, Stillmarch?
 +
 +
Lamont: it has taken several improvements of late
 +
 +
Leonora: It is strange to think that, but for one or two twists and turns, I might be your auntie right now.
 +
 +
Nik: smiles slightly at that
 +
 +
Leonora: But I also think that things are how they are, often for a reason, not under our control.
 +
 +
Magga: Nora please, don't make the boy think about that right now.
 +
 +
Leonora: My deity, Bahamut, stands for justice, and never turning away from those who are oppressed.
 +
 +
Leonora: Whatever you need in this, you have the support of House Wengal.
 +
 +
Lamont: Thank you.
 +
 +
Leonora: And then, when this is resolved, we can turn to brighter discussions.
 +
 +
Lamont: I had though to broach the topic of my uncle this evening, but this is...
 +
 +
Lamont: more serious than even I had imagined
 +
 +
Nik: Can I ask... what are the brighter discussions?
 +
 +
Nik: asks warily
 +
 +
Leonora: We intend to proceed with discussions with you, Stillmarch, regarding the matter of our baby.  There are, of course, other candidates, but we would be fools not to see that an agreement with you would be very beneficial.
 +
 +
Lamont: nods
 +
 +
Lamont: Please, at this stage, I think Lamont is fine.
 +
 +
Lamont: I had not elaborated this with Nik as yet.
 +
 +
Lamont: But, as I am hoping to announce our engagement formally soon, I thought it best to involve him
 +
 +
Leonora: Oh, my congratulations to the both of you!
 +
 +
Nik: blushes
 +
 +
Lamont: Thank you.
 +
 +
Nik: Thank you
 +
 +
Nik: um... baby?
 +
 +
Lamont: Yes...
 +
 +
Lamont: glances at Leonora to see if she want to explain or if I should
 +
 +
Leonora: Lord Wengal and I are looking for a potential father for our heir.
 +
 +
Nik: oh! oh, I see 😮
 +
 +
Nik: well, of course, I trust Lamont would do an excellent job.
 +
 +
Lamont: blushes furiously
 +
 +
Lamont: There are a number of considerations
 +
 +
Magga: I don't think there was any doubt about the quality of his... job.
 +
 +
Lamont: look at a very interesting corner of the table
 +
 +
Lamont: In any case.
 +
 +
Leonora: Yes, quite right, in any case.
 +
 +
Nik: Oh, well, yes.  What are the other considerations?
 +
 +
Lamont: I had thought some about what I might ask from you
 +
 +
Lamont: As you say, my uncle is still my guardian, and his approval is still needed in any of my affairs
 +
 +
Lamont: whether that is my engagement, or anything else... contractual.
 +
 +
Lamont: I am not willing to let go of the first however
 +
 +
Lamont: however long it may take to resolve
 +
 +
Nik: smiles at that
 +
 +
Lamont: Despite his position, however, I expect that we will find ourselves in a similar position to you, in due course
 +
 +
Leonora: nods.
 +
 +
Lamont: gives Nik a slightly apologetic look
 +
 +
Leonora: I am fully convinced that, if the matter of your uncle can be dealt with, you and I can come to a very satisfactory contract, Lamont.
 +
 +
Magga: If a few words in the right ear would help persuade your uncle that it's in his best interests to not cause problems here, it could be arranged.  But maybe he requires a more... formal intervention.
 +
 +
Lamont: nods to Leonora
 +
 +
Lamont: I suspect that may be the case.
 +
 +
Lamont: but it will not be easy to prove his involvement in this, or any other matters....
 +
 +
Lamont: shakes his head.
 +
 +
Lamont: I will speak at length with Lady Machel.
 +
 +
Leonora: Very good. And I will continue to attend to matters regarding the investigation into the attack.
 +
 +
Lamont: nods
 +
 +
Lamont: I expect she will reach out to you on that matter as well.
 +
 +
Leonora: All right then.  I look forward to our next conversation.
 +
 +
Lamont: Like wise.  Thank you both.
 +
 +
Nik: Thank you, it was very nice to see you again!
 +
 +
 +
===Lamont Discusses His Engagement With Thurston===
 +
 +
Lamont: (probably someone on staff will let Thurston know that Lamont has turned up in the stables before he actually comes to the house)
 +
 +
Thurston Allard: will come out to the stables to interrupt Lamont
 +
 +
Well, welcome back. I was starting to think you didn't want to be near me.
 +
 +
Lamont: turns, keeps a hand on Briar's neck
 +
 +
Lamont: Hello uncle.
 +
 +
Lamont: looks like he is actually doing really well - better than when he first came home for the season, even
 +
 +
Thurston Allard: looks him over thoughtfully You look well, at least. I had no idea what I'd find when I found you, with you running off so abruptly. Did you not receive my letter?
 +
 +
Lamont: Your letter?  I'm afraid not.
 +
 +
Thurston Allard: shakes his head sadly
 +
 +
Ah, that explains much. I can't blame you for wanting to take a trip home after all you've been through, but I had sent a letter to let you know I was coming to make sure you were alright. By the time I reached Therma Alba you were long gone, it seemed.
 +
 +
Lamont: nods.
 +
 +
Lamont: It had been some time since I'd been to Stillmarch.  It was good to return, if briefly.
 +
 +
Thurston Allard: I imagine it would be. You are truly not obligated to stay here, if you would prefer to relocate to Stillmarch for a while. I am your guardian, but you are more than old enough to manage yourself without me.
 +
 +
Lamont: pauses
 +
 +
Lamont: That is something of a change in sentiment.
 +
 +
Lamont: But if that is how you feel then - No, I'm not interested in relocating to Stillmarch at this time, but I will find an appropriate lodging elsewhere.
 +
 +
Thurston Allard: sighs and rubs his forehead tiredly
 +
 +
I have never been... good with people, especially younger people that are under my authority. I have tried to do right by you, but after the events of this season, I have to accept that you are your own man, and you know what's best for yourself. I do hope you will stop by and visit your Uncle from time to time
 +
 +
Lamont: is probably not completely succeeding at looking at you like you have three heads
 +
 +
Lamont: I will not neglect my family duty
 +
 +
Lamont: (What are his intentions here?)
 +
 +
Lamont: But if you intend to permit me to arrange my own affairs, that is welcome news.
 +
 +
Thurston Allard: Of course not. You've been a dutiful lad since your brother's passing. I am merely an overcautious man, and apparently a bit of an overbearing one.
 +
 +
Chitara: (Oh he absolutely just wants to convince Lamont he has good intentions)
 +
 +
Lamont: (ah ha ha)
 +
 +
Lamont: Then.  I have your leave to announce my engagement to Lord Evenor.
 +
 +
Thurston Allard: clearly startled I had heard you had grown quite close but... are you sure that is wise? You are still young, and Lord Evenor is even younger by his peoples' standards.
 +
 +
Lamont: I am without a single doubt.
 +
 +
Lamont: His family supports the match.
 +
 +
Thurston Allard: Well, lets take this at a reasonable pace, at least. You and Lord Evenor must come to dinner here, and we can discuss the matter. Forgive an old man his foibles, I would like to speak to your prospective spouse before I sign off on the marriage.
 +
 +
Lamont: Are you prepared to let me manage my own affairs or not?
 +
 +
Thurston Allard: I said you can choose your living situation, I didn't mean I would completely step away- I would be remiss as a guardian if I didn't at least have a conversation with the boy.
 +
 +
Lamont: 😒
 +
 +
Lamont: Then after I have finalized these arrangements, I will host you both.
 +
 +
Thurston Allard: nods That seems a reasonable compromise. I will look forward to it.
 +
 +
hesitates for a moment before clapping a friendly hand on his shoulder
 +
 +
I am happy for you. I never did manage to make a match, I hope yours proves strong.
 +
 +
Chitara: (He weirdly completely means this one)
 +
 +
Lamont: Thank you.
 +
 +
Lamont: will come in a little while later to arrange for his things to start getting packed, and some sent to his temporary lodging
 +
 +
 +
===Chitara and Vaze Discuss Her Engagement and Dinner Plans===
 +
 +
Chitara: Has come back a bit frazzled, but seemingly in high spirits
 +
 +
Vaze: can be found going over some correspondence in the study
 +
 +
Vaze: Ah, you are back! how was your trip? I heard there was some kind of attack?
 +
 +
Chitara: comes into the study with a smile after freshening up from the trip
 +
 +
I imagine this is the absolute best trip I could have had considering we were attacked by a hoard of demons.
 +
 +
Vaze: I'm glad to see you unharmed.  Come, sit and tell me all about it.
 +
 +
Vaze: will have a servant bring some tea
 +
 +
Chitara: will happily come to sit by the fire with him
 +
 +
Well, would you like the good news or the thrilling tale of adventure first?
 +
 +
Vaze: perks up at that
 +
 +
Vaze: Oh, let's hear the good news.  I could use some these days.
 +
 +
Chitara: Well, while I was at Therma Alba, I made the acquaintance of the Duke Sebastien Harcourt. You might recognize the name as being from a dragonmarked human noble house of the area.
 +
 +
She winks
 +
 +
Vaze: Oh? A duke, is it? That's quite a prestigious connection.
 +
 +
Chitara: We suit each other rather well, I think. And I have also befriended his sister, who is rather in charge of his affairs and thinks I have a reasonable shot of getting him to propose.
 +
 +
Vaze: Oh, my! Do you think he is amenable to our political outlook?
 +
 +
Chitara: ... Truthfully, he's a bit... um... not politically minded. But he is fond of me, and I am confident he would support me and my political work here
 +
 +
Vaze: nods
 +
 +
Vaze: Someone who is indifferently disposed towards political causes might be preferable in some ways.  What about your own feelings in the affair? Do you think you could be happy with him?
 +
 +
Chitara: blushes
 +
 +
Yes, I think so. He's... well, he's everything I'd hoped to find. I can't precisely claim to be in love with him, but I think we would have a good life together.
 +
 +
Vaze: You have a pragmatic outlook on such matters.  What about his estate? his income? Is his reputation good? He is highborn of course, but will he be able to provide a comfortable place for you to live, and behave suitably towards you?
 +
 +
Chitara: I have not seen his estate, but his family are quite well off from their perfumes- I am told they are extremely well regarded in Nerathi circles and have been for centuries. And we have had a very frank conversation about what we're looking for out of marriage- I think we are precisely matched on those expectations
 +
 +
Vaze: Then, if you think this match would be suitable for you, I have no objections to it - provided, of course, that once I meet the young man nothing seems amiss.
 +
 +
Vaze: Perhaps it would be appropriate to invite him - and his sister, you said? - over for dinner one evening in order for me to get to know them.
 +
 +
Chitara: I had already suggested as much to Rose- his sister, I mean. I'm looking forward to it
 +
 +
Vaze: Wonderful, then - we shall have to impress them with some good Ahkasic hospitality!
 +
 +
Chitara: grins
 +
 +
Sounds like an excellent evening!
 +
 +
 +
===The Doumens Have Dinner With Chitara and Vaze===
 +
 +
Rosalie: is dressed for dinner, seated opposite of Sebastian and studying him
 +
 +
Sebastien: What, is my cravat crooked?
 +
 +
Sebastien: smooths it down
 +
 +
Rosalie: It's my turn to tease you, brother.
 +
 +
Sebastien: Oh, tease me, is it?  grins
 +
 +
Sebastien: The difference is, Rosie, that I have no shame :V
 +
 +
Rosalie: laughs
 +
 +
Rosalie: This is true, and it makes you exceedingly frustrating.
 +
 +
Rosalie: However, I have made friends with our host, so I must ask... leans forward and looks serious, but with a mischievous glint
 +
 +
What are your intentions?
 +
 +
Sebastien: And I have no shame about that either!  But I do hope to make a good impression
 +
 +
Lamont: (Shame)
 +
 +
Sebastien: With Lady Chitara? Well, we are quite compatible I think, the question might - is it enduring? But I think between the two of us, there's no need for that.  We have quite similar views on that.
 +
 +
Rosalie: Well...I suppose you can never be sure if it is enduring, even with the greatest of loves.
 +
 +
Sebastien: I've always thought that, you know, what if something better comes along?  But it hasn't, my infatuations don't last, you know, so I'm not concerned if it should now.  The question is more what kind of peaceable life could we build?  She's quite ambitious and of course, you know, I'm not at all.
 +
 +
Sebastien: I think we could give each other what space we needed should it come it that, we certainly have the resources for it.  But would it trouble you?
 +
 +
Rosalie: raises a brow
 +
 +
What would trouble me?
 +
 +
Sebastien: well, I know you want me to settle, I know I should but you know I have little inclination for purely my own sake.  But I am easy to please.  You're more of a romantic, and i know you're only starting to let yourself think of such things...  If it would stand in the way of your happiness, then that's a duty that I take more seriously.
 +
 +
Rosalie: I think...you are very much like Father. He was happy to live on his own until he absolutely needed to have an heir. And I feel...should he have begun that search in earnest sooner in life, he may have found someone more compatible to his lifestyle than Mother.
 +
 +
Rosalie: I would like you to be happier in marriage than they were.
 +
 +
Sebastien: Well, that's a small enough challenge.  I make my own happiness, and if I am like father, I'm much more frank about that, and Chitara understands
 +
 +
Rosalie: nods
 +
 +
Rosalie: It won't impede my search for my own partner, but Seb, you are my brother and closest friend. I would not truly be happy if you were unhappy.
 +
 +
Sebastien: Then, rest easy, Rosie.  I'm perfectly pleased.
 +
 +
Rosalie: smiles
 +
 +
So, are you considering something more long term, then?
 +
 +
Rosalie: I think you and Chitara would do well together, for what it's worth.
 +
 +
Sebastien: Well, I think so.  I should speak with her more, or course.
 +
 +
Sebastien: I think we are in alignment, though.  I know she's meant to be on the market.
 +
 +
Rosalie: nods
 +
 +
Well, then I am satisfied. And I shall find some other way to vex you.
 +
 +
Sebastien: Well, now, speaking of vexing me, the one thing to know if we are truly compatible is, I must take her out to one of my favorite halls!  So, as it is a matter of procuring a match I will hear nothing about the expenses, alright?
 +
 +
Rosalie: narrows eyes
 +
 +
I see your game, Seb, but I shall let it slide. Within reason.
 +
 +
Sebastien: well always!
 +
 +
Sebastien: I'm quite reasonable!
 +
 +
Sebastien: will descend form the carriage and help his sister out, and then follow after servants once we are announced
 +
 +
Vaze: will be present to welcome our guests
 +
 +
Chitara: will also be present, if a teensy bit nervous
 +
 +
Vaze: Good evening, Duke Harcourt, Lady Rosalie, and welcome!
 +
 +
Rosalie: smiles in greeting
 +
 +
Rosalie: Good evening, my lord. It is an honor to be invited!
 +
 +
Sebastien: yes, thank you so much!
 +
 +
Chitara: Oh, we're delighted to have you!
 +
 +
Vaze: I trust you brought your appetites, as there is quite a feast prepared!
 +
 +
Sebastien: Oh, Chitara my dear you are always a delight ^-^
 +
 +
Sebastien: And that sounds wonderful.
 +
 +
Chitara: smiles and blows him a kiss
 +
 +
And you are an abject flatterer, I love it
 +
 +
Vaze: will lead the way into the dining room, where an assortment of Ahkasic delicacies are laid out
 +
 +
Vaze: Now, some of these dishes may be a little unfamiliar, but please ask if there is anything you aren't sure about.  We will surely not be insulted - it's just a pleasure to share our food and our customs with you.
 +
 +
Sebastien: Oh wonderful - Chitara has been telling me about some of her favourites, so I looks forward to sampling it all.
 +
 +
Chitara: Oh, we've got all the ones I've told you about here, I think. We've got pretty much everything here
 +
 +
Sebastien: That does sound liek quite a lot!
 +
 +
Rosalie: That sound wonderful, I enjoy trying new things.
 +
 +
Vaze: Then please, let us sit and enjoy! There is no need to stand on formality here.
 +
 +
Sebastien: will seat his sister and Chitara if she lets him
 +
 +
Chitara: will let him do so
 +
 +
Just be careful, a lot of this has more spice than most of the food I've seen in Highmark.
 +
 +
Vaze: nods emphatically
 +
 +
Vaze: Although in some cases, the proper spices were not available, so some substitutions had to be made... but it will suffice!
 +
 +
Sebastien: Oh well, I shall be careful, then!
 +
 +
Vaze: If you find anything too spicy, there is plenty of bread, or this mint sauce is pleasantly cooling.
 +
 +
Chitara: The couscous is good for that too
 +
 +
Sebastien: Oh that's another use for your herbs there, Rosie ^-^
 +
 +
Vaze: Ah, you are an herbalist?
 +
 +
Rosalie: Amateur, I would say.
 +
 +
Chitara: Maybe, but a very skilled amateur. I saw you in the stillroom
 +
 +
Vaze: I have been considering whether the climate here would permit importing certain herbs from home - but perhaps in a greenhouse? I will need to seek your wisdom in such matters.
 +
 +
Sebastien: Yes, don't listen to her, she'd just been comparing herself to the Curiate Amathalis lately which is, I must sa, rather a high standard!
 +
 +
Rosalie: blushes a little
 +
 +
Sebastien: Oh you out to speak to Councillor Callais, he just build a new one, he loves plants form all over.
 +
 +
Rosalie: I must admit, I have tried to branch out to herbs from different regions with a little success.
 +
 +
Vaze: Fascinating!
 +
 +
Rosalie: I have dreams of starting a new parfum line with the more hard to find scents.
 +
 +
Chitara: Some of our local herbs back home could be really good for that, I would think?
 +
 +
Vaze: nods
 +
 +
Sebastien: and flowers I'm sure.  Everyone likes things a little exotic winks at Chitara
 +
 +
Vaze: And what about you, Duke Harcourt? What are your interests?
 +
 +
Sebastien: Oh, you know, I keep myself entertained. Rosie likes to involve herself in business, but it's not relly necessary, its beeen running itself for generations now.
 +
 +
Rosalie: My brother is the sportsman of the family.
 +
 +
Sebastien: Indeed yes!
 +
 +
Vaze: Ah, sports? You must keep quite active then.
 +
 +
Sebastien: I keep telling Chitara I shall take her out riding and sfins her some nice places for her painting
 +
 +
Sebastien: and yes, I ride every day if I can - keeps the blood up, you know?
 +
 +
Chitara: We'll have to do that sometime soon, I'd love to get some more painting done. I haven't had much time for it since we got to Nerath.
 +
 +
Sebastien: The one you showed me from Therma Alba was quite lovely
 +
 +
Vaze: My niece is indeed very talented! I'm glad you have an eye for her skills.
 +
 +
Chitara: Oh, thank you, both of you. I'm mostly a painter for my own sanity rather than as a proper artist, but it's always nice to hear good things about one's work
 +
 +
Sebastien: Oh, very much so ^-^
 +
 +
Vaze: As I'm sure you know, I care greatly for Chitara, and I would hope that any potential suitor would be able to keep her interest.
 +
 +
Sebastien: glances her way
 +
 +
Sebastien: Well I can't imagine she would ever allow herself to be bored for long.
 +
 +
Sebastien: if one can't keep up, they must simply respect a lady's own drive and ambition
 +
 +
Vaze: This is true.  You think you are capable of dealing with a headstrong and intelligent spouse, then? One who has strong opinions, and will not simply say 'yes dear' and smile for you?
 +
 +
Rosalie: smiles wryly
 +
 +
He already has such in a sister.
 +
 +
Chitara: quietly dying in her seat of embarassment
 +
 +
Sebastien: Oh yes, I'm quite accustomed, I think I manage alright, eh Rosie?
 +
 +
Sebastien: really I think that's more my place, to smile, and say 'yes dear'.
 +
 +
Rosalie: You have always been supportive of my ambitions.
 +
 +
Sebastien: Exactly ^-^
 +
 +
Vaze: That's a promising sign, then.  You have my blessing to proceed with a courtship, if such is your intention.
 +
 +
Sebastien: Oh, wonderful, thank you!  If the lady is amenable, of course.
 +
 +
Chitara: smiles at Seb
 +
 +
I believe it was the general idea, yes. But... now that we've got that sorted, might I suggest you both try the falafel? It's quite good. Quite herby.
 +
 +
Rosalie: Oh, yes please.
 +
 +
Chitara: will pass Rose the plate and try to compose herself again
 +
 +
Sebastien: well then - yes dear ^-^
 +
 +
Chitara: grins
 +
 +
Okay, I could get used to that
 +
 +
Rosalie: laughs lightly
 +
 +
 +
===Juno and Rosalie Meet in the Park===
 +
 +
Rosalie: will be in Parliament Park, dressed in a simple, yet fashionable day dress, sitting on a bench and taking notes
 +
 +
Juno: will be walking through the park with a broadsheet folded under her arm and a packet of fish and chips in her hand.
 +
 +
Juno: pauses just as she's about to Rose and actually realizes who it is.
 +
 +
Juno: Lady Doumens, what a pleasant surprise.
 +
 +
Rosalie: looks up from her notes, in surprise Oh, Magus Auspex, hello! It's Rose, please.
 +
 +
Juno: Of course, and likewise, Juno. May I join you?
 +
 +
Rosalie: Yes, please! gestures to the bench
 +
 +
Juno: will take a seat, propping her cane against the side of the bench.
 +
 +
Juno: Chip?
 +
 +
Rosalie: smiles
 +
 +
Absolutely.
 +
 +
Juno: holds out her food with a smile.
 +
 +
Juno: I hope I'm not interrupting. You looked intent on your work there.
 +
 +
Rosalie: takes a chip and eats it before responding
 +
 +
No, it is a most welcome interruption. I've been pouring over plans for Founder's Day.
 +
 +
Juno: Oh? What sort of plans do you have?
 +
 +
Rosalie: Well, it's all very rudimentary right now. And boringly traditional.
 +
 +
Juno: How so? I mean, it is a tradition, so it seems like it...comes with the territory?
 +
 +
Rosalie: sighs Yes, but I would love to see something a little new. Perhaps with the closing festivities, or music.
 +
 +
Juno: Well, what would you do if you could do anything you wanted?
 +
 +
Rosalie: Oh, dear, what a long list.smiles
 +
 +
Juno: I have my whole lunch break.
 +
 +
Rosalie: laughs
 +
 +
Rosalie: I was thinking we could add some goods booths for local artisans on one end, and music and game son the other. gestures toward the park
 +
 +
Juno: Oh, that sounds nice. It'd be good to see more people up here than just the Houses.
 +
 +
Rosalie: nods It will require some work, for sure. I'll need to either host a sign up and have some form of audition, or travel to local artisans and extend invitations.
 +
 +
Juno: Certainly you write to some of the guild heads for their assistance. I'm sure it'd be an honor for any to be included.
 +
 +
Juno: Oh! I have a friend who works for the Resource Council who could probably help, too. I can put you in touch with some people.
 +
 +
Juno: A lot of the guilds have to deal with them, so he got contacts all over town.
 +
 +
Rosalie: Oh, that would be very helpful, thank you!
 +
 +
Rosalie: I will be in your debt
 +
 +
Juno: Who's keeping track at this point. 😉
 +
 +
Juno: Happy to help.
 +
 +
Rosalie: laughs
 +
 +
Yes, the ledger has become quite confused at this point. Might as well do away with it.
 +
 +
Juno: smiles.
 +
 +
Juno: How are you, by the way, given all the excitement at Therma Alba? Can't be too plussed if you're planning all this.
 +
 +
Rosalie: Well, it was all certainly quite exciting, if I can say that. It felt good to be useful after. Returning home to normal business was a bit anti-climactic. But I wouldn't want to have that be a daily occurrence, for certain.
 +
 +
Juno: As someone with a bit more experience with similar situations, even on campaign it's far from a daily occurrence. What's the quote? 'Long stretches of boredom punctuated by moments of extreme terror'? Something like that.
 +
 +
Rosalie: nods
 +
 +
It was definitely novel to operate on instinct, rather than deliberation.
 +
 +
Juno: You handled yourself quite well, I thought. Perhaps you should make more of a habit it of it.
 +
 +
Rosalie: Operate on instinct?
 +
 +
Juno: nods.
 +
 +
Juno: Let yourself, ah, trust yourself. Oof, I think I bungled that, but I think you know what I mean.
 +
 +
Rosalie: pauses and gains a soft smile, blushing a little
 +
 +
In that case... would you like to go riding or come to tea at my home, sometime soon?
 +
 +
Juno: pauses, looking surprised for a moment, before blushing herself and returning the smile.
 +
 +
Juno: I...would like that very much. Either, or both, really. I'm only a fair rider, but I do enjoy it, and tea is always nice.
 +
 +
Rosalie: looks relieved
 +
 +
Excellent. You are welcome any time, of course, but how does tomorrow sound?
 +
 +
Juno: That sounds great. We're busy at the war office at the moment, but I can make time.
 +
 +
Juno: I'll be looking forward to it.
 +
 +
Rosalie: Me too. grins
 +
 +
 +
===Victorina and Chitara Plan for the Expo===
 +
 +
Victorina: Victorina has a full tea ready for when Chitara shows up. There's also a table covered with scattered papers.
 +
 +
Chitara: grins at Victorina as she arrives
 +
 +
It's good to have time to sit down and chat with you over tea again
 +
 +
Victorina: She returns the grin. "Yes. This tea is made from Ebemar leaves. I think we should offer local treats at the expo." Victorina starts sorting through the paperwork. "I know I have a list of potential exhibits here somewhere..."
 +
 +
Chitara: "Oh, yes, we've got several Akhasic chefs coming in to run the kitchens for the event.. And you are a saint for finding Ebemari tea, we brought some but no one else here seems to understand the difference." She pours herself a cup of tea with obvious delight.
 +
 +
Victorina: Victorina sniffs, "Fools. What thoughts do you have for the expo?"
 +
 +
Chitara: "We've invited every local artisan and shopkeep we can find who's from Ebemar originally, and we've invited some to come over from the city for the expo as well. I don't know all the specifics of who and what they'll have"
 +
 +
Victorina: Victorina finds a large blank sheet of paper and grabs a charcoal stick. "At least we can start sketching where we want to place things. I'm thinking we leave a large area in the middle empty for demonstrations."
 +
 +
Chitara: "Oh, can I show you what I had in mind? I think you'll like it."
 +
 +
Victorina: "Go right ahead."
 +
 +
Chitara: Chitara grabs a charcoal stick and quickly sketches the shape of the space they're working with, then adds small rectangles around the outside for stalls, followed by two concentric circles in the middle. "So, working with the shape of our space, there will likely be more space for booths and such in the halls outside, but the thought is that we'd have food and drink stalls in the main room, as well as booths for textiles and instruments and other things that would be demo'd on this central dais, with seating in a ring around it so people don't feel like they need to rush through the space."
 +
 +
Victorina: "What about the drakes? Do we want to risk having some live ones or an in-depth informational booth?"
 +
 +
Chitara: "Oh, hmmmm." She taps her nose with the charcoal as she thinks, leaving a black smudge. "We hadn't decided what to do with the gardens, we could have some out there? Maybe even let people ride them around a bit?"
 +
 +
Victorina: "I think riding might be too much for guests. It'd be safer if trained riders shows them that it can be done. How many people here know how to properly ride a drake?"
 +
 +
Chitara: "Hm. Most of us in the delegation, really. It's not as complicated as it seems"
 +
 +
Victorina: "Hm. I still have my concerns. I don't want anyone to get hurt, you understand. And if there's alcohol involved..."
 +
 +
Chitara: "I suppose I see your point."  She sketches the garden off to the side, with a couple drakes in a 'small' (for drakes) paddock. "Maybe some drakes on the other side of a fence and someone knowledgeable to tell visitors about them?"
 +
 +
Victorina: "Sounds like a good idea to me."
 +
 +
Chitara: "Excellent. That's very doable. Provided they can get the drakes through the portal."
 +
 +
 +
===Chitara Takes Sebastien for a Ride===
 +
 +
Chitara: Will show up in riding clothes at the agreed upon time, looking around curiously as she's led in
 +
 +
Sebastien: Will have been waiting for her, also dressed very comfortably in elegant riding clothes, and smiles broadly when she is shown in
 +
 +
Sebastien: Chitara my dear, how lovely!  A very good morning to you ^-^
 +
 +
Chitara: And good morning to you as well! How are you, darling?
 +
 +
Sebastien: Extremely well, and now much better, of course!  Now remind me, you know how I am with these things - have you much experience with horses?
 +
 +
Sebastien: I thought, if not, perhaps we can restrict ourselves to the park, which is pleasant enough, but otherwise we could head out of the city somewhat
 +
 +
Chitara: As it happens, while we don't ride many horses back home I do have some experience with them from a friend who breeds horses back home.
 +
 +
grins
 +
 +
I'd love to head out of the city and see the sights
 +
 +
Sebastien: Oh that's fantastic then!  My sister has agreed to lend you her mare, Primrose, she's quite a genial thing, and will treat you well.  Shall we then?  We'll have to get out of the city first, of course, but I know all the best paths.
 +
 +
Chitara: I'm sure Primrose will be lovely, I'll have to thank her. Lead the way to the stables?
 +
 +
Sebastien: can do so, chattering a b it as he goes.  When we arrive, the grooms already have the horses ready for us - both are pure black, though ones is a little larger and  looks a little more spirited, while the smaller one is calmer
 +
 +
Chitara: I'm guessing the smaller one is for me? smiles and steps over to the horse to introduce herself
 +
 +
Sebastien: So here we are!
 +
 +
Sebastien: Will lead you over to the calmer looking one
 +
 +
Chitara: She's absolutely lovely
 +
 +
Sebastien: You'll have to tell Rosie that ^-^  DO you need a hand up?
 +
 +
Chitara: Chitara swings up into the saddle with a smirk
 +
 +
Not that I mind the help, but sometimes it's more fun to show off
 +
 +
Sebastien: _grins broadly_Oh wonderful, absolutely!  Now, Primrose knows to follow my lead - just let me know if you have any trouble with her.
 +
 +
Sebastien: will mount up on Ace, handling the spirited animal with confidence and experience, and lead us off.  as promised, he does know some shortcuts down the mountain and out of the city, though you think he might be picking ones that are a little less challenging than he might otherwise
 +
 +
Chitara: can't decide whether or not to call Seb out on it, so just enjoys the trip for the moment. She does seem to be much better on a horse than 'my friend raises them' might have implied on its own
 +
 +
Sebastien: YOu really are quite comfortable in the saddle!  I should have suspected! ^-^
 +
 +
Chitara: Oh, I have a wide variety of talents that were mostly useless in Ebemar. laughs
 +
 +
Sebastien: Well Ill do my best to see they are appreciated here ^-^  But who did teach you to ride, then?
 +
 +
Chitara: Oh, it was the friend I mentioned. We just... grew up together, is all.
 +
 +
Sebastien: nodsOh, fair enough! Well, now that we're out of the city, what would you care to do?  There are some nice places around, so nice views of the city from afar, some pleasant little places to rest, or there's also some nicely challenging  places to ride
 +
 +
Chitara: Why don't we check out one of the more complicated trails, then find a place to rest and enjoy the view?
 +
 +
Sebastien: Lovely!  I know just the place ^-^

Chitara: Sounds perfect! Don't hold back on my account this time, yeah?
 +
 +
Sebastien: We can head down the coast, and then have a little lunch.  And no, now I know etter, no holding back at all!
 +
 +
Sebastien: will spur Ace onwards, living up to the comment and leading Chitara on a fun and challenging ride through some of the coastal scenery, until we finally come to a little stand of pines on a promontory overlooking the ocean
 +
 +
Chitara: Chitara has a blast with it, and will totally even try to race Seb on a more level part of the trail. When they reach the overlook, though, she immediately approaches the edge to stare out at the gorgeous view
 +
 +
Holy crap, you weren't kidding about the view
 +
 +
Sebastien: Well I am known for my eye for beauty, after all!
 +
 +
Sebastien: Will dismout and offer you a hand also, just to be gallant
 +
 +
Chitara: will take Seb's hand to dismount in a flirtatious manner
 +
 +
I'll have to come out here with my painter's kit at some point, it'd be practically a crime not to capture this
 +
 +
Sebastien: Oh yes, I'd love to see that!  And you can see the city there up on the hill if you look down the coast too - I think it looks quite pretty from a distance
 +
 +
Chitara: She turns to look, looking absolutely delighted
 +
 +
Oh, damn. Beautiful, private, fun to get to? This might be my new favorite place.
 +
 +
Sebastien: I'm quite fond!  I know a few other ways of getting out here, but we definitely took the most fun ^-^
 +
 +
Sebastien: Now, I believe I asked to have a few little things packed up for us....
 +
 +
Chitara: kisses Seb happily while she's still semi-in his arms from dismounting
 +
 +
Oh?
 +
 +
Sebastien: Oh well, no rush, no rush....
 +
 +
Sebastien: is quite happy for a little kissing and whatnot first ;)
 +
 +
Sebastien: can pull away though to get said things out, including a blanket and a basket that contains all the things one mighht need for a fancy picnic, icluding chilled wine, glasses, and various food.  Picnic basket of hlding ;)
 +
 +
Chitara: Will help set up the picnic, taking the opportunity to steal bites of a couple things as she does
 +
 +
This all looks excellent!
 +
 +
Sebastien: yes, quite wonderful!
 +
 +
Sebastien: Will settle down to lounge on the blanket, patting the space next to him invitingly
 +
 +
Sebastien: Now then, shall we enjoy ourselves properly? 😏

Summary

Session date: 2023-04-30

At Therma Alba: Coifárë has a run in with their cousin Calar and they trade barbs. Nik talks to his father about Lamont and expresses his intention to propose. Mikethelas talks to Leonora about the attack and shows her a suspicious letter found on one of the cultists

At Stillmarch: Lamont brings Nik and Coifárë to Stillmarch, and shows them the lake once they arrive. Nik proposes in the orchard, and after a moment of panic, Lamont accepts. They discuss the path head, and Lamont's relationship with Coifárë as well. Later that night, Lamont brings Coifárë up to see one of the wonders of the lake. They discuss Lamont's engagement and what they mean to each other.

In Highmark: Lavinia has a heart to heart with her sister once they are back home, and tells Kitty that the courtship is back on. Chitara talks to her uncle Vaze about the trip, the attack, and meeting Sebastien.

Nik hosts Chitara for tea and they discuss their various romantic entanglements

Nik and Lamont visit with Leonora and Magga, who tell them about the letter from Thurston, and then they discuss the prospect of Lamont as a potential sire. Afterwards, Lamont returns to griffin's Crest, where Thurston allows him to make separate living arrangements, but insists on meeting with Nik formally before permitting the engagement

The Doumens siblings visit Chitara and her uncle Vaze for dinner, and Vaze gives permission for Sebastien to formally court his niece.

Juno and Rosalie run into each other while Rosalie is finalizing plans for Founders Day in the park. Meanwhile, Victorina and Chitara meet to discuss their plans for the Akasic exposition and ball.

Sebastien and Chitara go for an invigorating and romantic ride outside of the city.

Session

Coifárë Talks to Their Cousin

Calar Brescia: Ah cousin, so glad I ran into you. Shame about the big feast.

Calar Brescia: I had heard they were finally going to bring out the good wine

Coifárë: I'm sorry?

Coifárë: will look up from their painting.

Calar Brescia: Events have been called off tonight... for reasons I guess

Coifárë: frowns.

Calar Brescia: shrugs

Coifárë: Yes, because people died, Calar.

Coifárë: I assume the Amathalises felt it would be in poor taste to feast tonight.

Calar Brescia: Yes, yes, there was death... let their souls travel to their deserved place in the heavens

Calar Brescia: The only real reason I showed up to this...gathering... was for the final event

Coifárë: Oh? And to what were you looking forward?

Calar Brescia: To shower these folks with the blessing of my presence, in the one event worthy of my attention

Calar Brescia: and now its all a waste

Calar Brescia: at least you got to... doodle?

Calar Brescia: gestures to the painting

Coifárë: sighs at that.

Coifárë: I've had some opportunity to paint, yes. The gardens are beautiful, and the chapel is very peaceful.

Coifárë: You haven't had a chance to, ahem, 'shower' anyone in the few days we've been here?

Coifárë: I would have thought the baths made for an easy opportunity make an impression.

Calar Brescia: still trying to drag me down to your level I see

Calar Brescia: I attended the baths, as appropriate for one of my standard, and have met with those who were deserved of my attention

Coifárë: I've no idea what you could possibly mean, but I've made quite a few pleasant acquaintances since we arrived.

Coifárë: Oh? Anyone of which your grandmother would approve?

Calar Brescia: So now you take an interest in family affairs... away from whatever other affairs you were up to these past few days?

Coifárë: You know I only follow my heart, at the behest of our lord of Arvandor. .

Coifárë: And, as our family stands in his stead on Arth, my service to them is service to our House.

Coifárë: says in a saccharinely sweet voice.

Calar Brescia: yes, it is service. Although when it comes to service, while always appreciated, some are just more valuable than others, wouldn't you agree?

Coifárë: Some may have larger or smaller parts to play, perhaps, but all service is valuable. I think there's an Erathin parable to that end that's escaping me at the moment.

Coifárë: Something about striving to be tools of the gods, and I'm sure you are indeed a very important tool, dear cousin.

Calar Brescia: smirks

Calar Brescia: Just as your service remains small

Coifárë: It seems to suit Corellon well enough.

Calar Brescia: looks at the painting

Narrator: (It's a view of the grounds/gardens from one of the balconies.)

Calar Brescia: I can see why you practice so much... Meletharius you are not.

Calar Brescia: give it a few decades, who knows? I might put one up in my kennel

Coifárë: Nor am I striving to be, but even a pale comparison is a compliment.

Coifárë: Oh, you honor me, to talk of hanging one of my works in your own bedchamber so.

Coifárë: I shall strive to make it worthy of the honor.

Calar Brescia: Oh, you must be thinking of yourself, sleeping with the bitches

Calar Brescia: I'm sure you hang all your artwork there already

Coifárë: I prefer different art in such situations, but it can be aesthetically pleasing.

Coifárë: Perhaps if you had the opportunity to not sleep alone, you might find it so as well, alas.

Calar Brescia: Such is my burden, so close to the throne, I must keep myself secluded, waiting for such that is deserving of my company

Calar Brescia: Sometimes I envy that you have none of that worry

Coifárë: It's certainly more companionable than your...solitude, I must admit.

Calar Brescia: but it passes quckly

Coifárë: I shall say a prayer to Sehanine that her blessings find you, cousin.

Coifárë: I'm sure the favor of a god can overcome any social...distance.

Calar Brescia: Your concern over me is refreshing cousin. Good to see you will keep me in your prayers.

Calar Brescia: I think the next time I deem to visit one of these estates, I'll have to be a squad with me, just to make sure its safe

Coifárë: Ah, of course. I suppose not everyone is able to manage with a borrowed spear or shield, and we can't have any harm coming to the heir's heir. Better safe than sorry. How did you fare during the raid?

Calar Brescia: You needn't have feared for my well being. I am more than capable of ensuring its safety. That is the concern though. If the raid had not been more haphazard, a real threat could have befallen me. I do not abide by luck avoiding such threats.

Calar Brescia: Should I have not been a priority for you? I did not see you trying to seek me out to ensure my saferty.

Gueiris: (safety)

Coifárë: To the contrary, cousin, once I saw the heir to Therma Alba to safety, I and others moved back out the grounds to find any and all who might be in danger.

Coifárë: Luckily, though we didn't find you, you seem to have found your way to safety.

Coifárë: I believe heard it was an outhouse? Something to that effect?

Calar Brescia: If you think to be amusing, I find it lacking. It's not like I would rely on you for my safety regardless

Coifárë: But upon someone, I'm sure. One of those of 'less valuable service' perhaps?

Coifárë: Be sure to thank them for their leal service, as any good prince would.

Coifárë: For the moment, however, you're blocking my light.

Calar Brescia: Alas, you make the enfeebled assumption that I hold those who serve the throne in low regard. You mistake your single perspective and make broad assertions, failing to see how singular you are.

Calar Brescia: enjoy your doodling

Calar Brescia: leaves

Nik and His Father Discuss His Marriage to Lamont

Mikethelas Amathalis: will likely still be busy dealing with the aftermath of the attack, seeing to the wounded and such, but Nik should be able to find him in a quiet moment at some point.

Nik: approaches his father a bit nervously, seeking a time when he's not extremely busy

Narrator: (We'll say Mik is having the closest thing a Regency noble can have to a quick lunch before getting back to work.)

Mikethelas Amathalis: Something on your mind, son?

Nik: Yes, Father, I was hoping I could talk with you. If you're not too busy...

Mikethelas Amathalis: gestures for Nik to have a seat.

Nik: comes and sits down

Nik: How are things going, with the people who were injured? Is there still a lot of work to be done?

Mikethelas Amathalis: nods.

Mikethelas Amathalis: For a few of them, but many should be able to travel today, thank the gods.

Mikethelas Amathalis: All are welcome to stay, of course, but I think many want to return home after...everything.

Nik: nods

Nik: I feel awful that this happened. I know it isn't my fault, but these people wouldn't have been here if not for me...

Mikethelas Amathalis: I would say it's to all our benefit they were, given how many rose in defense.

Mikethelas Amathalis: There's going to be a lot of work to do to figure out exactly why they attacked and how.

Nik: Do you know anything about that yet?

Mikethelas Amathalis: A bit. It seems they were targeting Fyan Nabari, and possibly Hraal Cziernos as well, though how they managed to get so far into our territory with a pack of demons in tow is still unclear.

Mikethelas Amathalis: shakes his head and sighs.

Nik: sighs as well

Mikethelas Amathalis: Some of the cousins are coming to help investigate, and we'll be working with the Palatines and others.

Nik: nods

Mikethelas Amathalis: But it may be a while before we know the full story, if at all.

Nik: I hope the truth can be discovered.

Mikethelas Amathalis: As do we all.

Mikethelas Amathalis: Something tells me that's not what's troubling you, precisely, though.

Nik: No... well, not exactly.

Nik: Lamont got a letter from his uncle saying he was going to come and pick him up. It was... well, his messages always seem fine on the surface, but it made Lamont quite distressed.

Mikethelas Amathalis: frowns.

Nik: So... he is planning to leave and go to Stillmarch, before his uncle can get here. I was hoping to go with him.

Mikethelas Amathalis: pauses for a moment.

Mikethelas Amathalis: That's perfectly acceptable, I suppose...

Nik: Only just for a couple of days. Then I would go back to Highmark.

Mikethelas Amathalis: nods.

Mikethelas Amathalis: That's good. When, ah, when did he ask you to accompany him?

Nik: Yesterday morning...

Nik: I think he intends to depart tomorrow.

Mikethelas Amathalis: nods.

Mikethelas Amathalis: pauses just a moment before continuing.

Mikethelas Amathalis: Nikession, I have to ask...what are your intentions towards Lord Stillmarch?

Nik: looks more nervous

Nik: I... I care for him very deeply. I know that perhaps you and Mother might not approve...

Nik: tries to gauge how his father is reacting before saying more

Mikethelas Amathalis: sighs and shakes his head, but gives a small smile.

Mikethelas Amathalis: It's not that we disapprove, Nik, it's just...you're very young, and we worry.

Nik: I know that I haven't known him in person for very long, but I've exchanged letters with him for years. I do feel like I know him very well, despite not having had much time together.

Nik: So... I want to ask for his hand in marriage.

Nik: says, mustering his courage

Mikethelas Amathalis: pauses, but manages to contain any reaction beyond that.

Mikethelas Amathalis: That's a big decision, son.

Mikethelas Amathalis: I would ask if you're sure, but I know it must have taken a lot to bring it up just now, so I can tell you're serious.

Nik: I know it's a big decision, but it feels like the right one. I don't know if he'll even accept, though...

Nik: Not because I think he doesn't return my feelings... but he worries about the situation with his uncle, and whether he would... would object, as it would mean Lamont would no longer be under his guardianship, if he was to marry.

Mikethelas Amathalis: nods slowly.

Nik: Father, his uncle has mistreated Lamont ever since he's had him in his "care"... and Lamont believes he is responsible for the deaths of his brother and his cousin, even if he has no proof of such an evil act...

Mikethelas Amathalis: What?

Mikethelas Amathalis: Nik, that's a hell of an accusation. I personally don't care for the man, but murder...

Nik: You could see yourself how sick Lamont became under his uncle's supervision, when it should have been something he could have recovered from in a day or two of rest.

Mikethelas Amathalis: That is true.

Mikethelas Amathalis: considers.

Nik: I know there is no proof, and it isn't my place to say such things, but I think he means Lamont harm, because ... because Lamont's dragonmark says as much, and I trust him. I know it sounds crazy.

Mikethelas Amathalis: His dragonmark?

Nik: Um... well, it tells him people's intentions towards him. I think it has caused him a great deal of suffering, because he has no way to turn it off, you know? He is always forced to be aware of people's motives when interacting with them. I probably shouldn't have said as much, it is not something he likes to discuss....

Mikethelas Amathalis: That does sound like a difficult burden, and I can imagine it would negatively affect his interactions with people.

Mikethelas Amathalis: Which, actually, pertains to my concern. Nik, I know you care for Stillmarch, and, again, I think he's a fine fellow, but supporting him does not require marrying him. If what you both suspect is true, it would be putting you at risk.

Nik: But if marriage could help him to be free from his uncle, then... if I could help him that way...

Mikethelas Amathalis: I think it's very admirable you want to help, but you need to make sure it is the right thing for you. Will it make you happy? Will it provide the life you want?

Mikethelas Amathalis: He's a military man, son. You may not see him for long stretches of time while he's on one campaign or another. Is that something you'll be happy with?

Mikethelas Amathalis: I'm not trying to talk you out of anything. I just want to make sure you've considered everything.

Nik: sits quietly for a moment

Nik: I don't know. But I do know that I don't think I could be happy with someone else, knowing that he remained in such an unhappy state.

Mikethelas Amathalis: is stoic for a moment, but slowly smiles a resigned smile.

Mikethelas Amathalis: You love him, hmm?

Nik: nods

Mikethelas Amathalis: shakes his head and chuckles a little.

Mikethelas Amathalis: Corellon preserve me while the Moon Maiden has her fun...

Mikethelas Amathalis: There will be a lot of preparations to make, I suppose, once you speak to him about this.

Nik: But he might not even agree...

Mikethelas Amathalis: smiles more broadly at that.

Mikethelas Amathalis: Best not to think like that, son. He'd be a fool to say no, and I wouldn't want you marrying a fool in any case.

Mikethelas Amathalis: Your mother will be thrilled and terrified in equal measure, of course.

Mikethelas Amathalis: And there's still his uncle to deal with, the insufferable man.

Nik: smiles hopefully

Nik: Do you think you can keep him occupied here for a little while? So that he doesn't just immediately go to Stillmarch on learning Lamont isn't here? Just... just to give him a day or two to breathe?

Mikethelas Amathalis: chuckles and shakes his head.

Mikethelas Amathalis: I'm sure we can figure it out.

Mikethelas Amathalis: You mother and I will be the very model of insistent hospitality.

Nik: If pressed, I think Lamont will say he never received any such letter from his uncle, so did not know he was meant to remain here until his arrival.

Nik: I'm sure with all the confusion it would have been quite easy for a letter to not reach its intended recipient.

Mikethelas Amathalis: A perfectly understandable possibility.

Nik: Father... thank you. I don't know what will happen, but I feel better knowing that I have your support.

Mikethelas Amathalis: Always, Nik.

Nik: will give him a hug

Mikethelas Amathalis: will happily hug Nik back.

Leonora and Mikethelas Discover a Clue

Leonora: will have made time to meet with the Curiate Amathalis on the morning before she andMagga take the airship back to Thantopolis (before heading off to Highmark).

Mikethelas Amathalis: will meet with Leonora in his office, and has the look of a man who's been quite busy.

Leonora: will have found whatever outfit she has that is least 'I am on vacation' and most 'This is serious business', but probably hasn't brought anything quite right for that.

Leonora: Thank you for agreeing to meet with me, Curiate Amathalis.

Leonora: We are well. My dear husband and I enjoy the sport, actually, though of course, with sadness at the destruction and grief caused. This is not our first time together in battle, to say the least.

Leonora: And Palatine or Wengal, it is no matter to me, I am, of course, both.

Leonora: I am merely sad for those for whom this was their first experience of Therma Alba, and hope it does not sour them on revisiting in future. My own summer days spent here as a girl were most formative, for me. And your hospitality has been, as always, beyond excellent.

Mikethelas Amathalis: You're very kind to say so, and I'm grateful neither you nor your husband or niece were seriously injured. Thank you again for your aid of Fyan Akan, as well. He speaks very highly of you both.

Mikethelas Amathalis: Having been out on the grounds during the event itself, what was your impression of the attack?

Leonora: My impressions were twofold. First, that there was at least some coordination in the attack that suggests that there may have been specific targets, Akan being one of them, but probably not just him.

Leonora: If there were only one target, an assassination rather than a raid would have been called for.

Mikethelas Amathalis: nods.

Leonora: Second, that the numbers of the assailants were in anticipation of a less vigorous defense of the grounds than the one that your guards, as well as the guests, launched.

Leonora: It could have been much, much worse.

Mikethelas Amathalis: I thought much the same. They didn't seem entirely prepared, but I suppose it might have been a hasty operation.

Mikethelas Amathalis: We did find some correspondence on one of the assailants; I thought I would ask you to take a look, if you don't mind.

Leonora: Of course.

Mikethelas Amathalis: will hand over a letter with a small dried smear of blood on it. It's written in an out-of-date Sentinel cypher, in a familiar handwriting.

Mikethelas Amathalis: I can't make heads nor tails of it, but I thought perhaps someone with more experience might.

Leonora: pauses over the letter, disturbed.

Mikethelas Amathalis: What is it?

Leonora: Ahh ... well, the cipher itself is a Sentinel one. I recognize it, but it would take a little time to work it all out. I couldn't do it on sight alone, but it would not be exceedingly hard.

Leonora: It's not one that the military would currently be using, though, which is very odd.

Mikethelas Amathalis: A Sentinel cypher?

Mikethelas Amathalis: That's concerning.

Narrator: (I keep misspelling that 😛 )

Leonora: Yes, of that, I am sure.

Leonora: Letters are intercepted, and it would not be unprecedented for the assailants to have done so.

Leonora: But this is not official correspondence, so that raises the question of what it is.

Mikethelas Amathalis: How long would it take to decode? Do you think they were able to do so?

Leonora: Well, for one thing, almost any cipher can be tackled with magic, by the right person. And of course, trivially, by anyone who knows the ciphering strategy.

Mikethelas Amathalis: nods.

Leonora: If they had neither of those, then it would be harder, but then, why would they have brought it with them to Therma Alba?

Leonora: There is ... something else.

Mikethelas Amathalis: Oh?

Leonora: pauses, trying to figure out whether or how to say this.

Leonora: I could be wrong, but ... I believe I recognize the handwriting.

Mikethelas Amathalis: You do?

Leonora: I believe so, yes.

Leonora: activates her dragonmark.

Leonora: We are now protected from any external scrutiny.

Mikethelas Amathalis: frowns and nods.

Leonora: It most closely resembles the handwriting of Mr.Thurston Allard.

Mikethelas Amathalis: I'm sorry?

Mikethelas Amathalis: That seems...remarkably coincidental.

Mikethelas Amathalis: moves some papers around on his desk and takes out another letter.

Leonora: Mr. Allard and I are well-acquainted. Some fifteen years ago, we spent quite a lot of time together in anticipation, perhaps, of a betrothal.

Leonora: It did not transpire, for a ... some reasons. But nonetheless, it would fit. He would have the requisite military training to know the cipher, but is not currently serving, as far as I know.

Mikethelas Amathalis: How long would it take to decipher the letter?

Leonora: considers the matter.

Leonora: One advantage we have is that we know some words likely to be in the letter. Therma Alba, Akan, Stillmarch, ... Lamont ... others. That would simplify the search.

Leonora: Presuming that the letter bears on the attack, it would be no more than a matter of hours for me to do it.

Mikethelas Amathalis: How long is it until you and Lord Wengal depart?

Leonora: We had hoped to depart this morning. But I'm sure I could find an excuse forMagga and I to stay a bit longer. The next social event in Highmark is not for a little while. And my father's airship is swift, so the journey will not be overly long.

Mikethelas Amathalis: I would greatly appreciate it. The best case scenario would be it is actually coincidental, but Mr. Allard is coming to Therma Alba presently, and I should like to be adequately prepared. I am, yet again, in your debt.

Leonora: By presently ... how presently?

Mikethelas Amathalis: Within a few days, I believe. I have...been enjoined to keep him here for some time if I am able.

Leonora: Might I inquire, if it is not too personal a matter ... does his visit relate to your son?

Mikethelas Amathalis: sighs and chuckles.

Mikethelas Amathalis: Yes, and Lord Stillmarch.

Leonora: nods.

Mikethelas Amathalis: My son is doing his best to help Stillmarch avoid his uncle, for which I can blame neither.

Leonora: Where are they now? Were they returning to Highmark together?

Mikethelas Amathalis: Further afield at the moment; they're headed to Stillmarch before going back to Highmark.

Leonora: All right. I will get to this letter immediately, and avail myself of just a little more of your hospitality until it can be deciphered.

Leonora: Who else knows of the letter's presence here at Therma Alba?

Mikethelas Amathalis: No one else just yet. I had thought to ask Fyan Nabari and Hraal Cziernos about it, though.

Leonora: If they cannot be trusted, then our problems are much more serious.

Mikethelas Amathalis: nods.

A Visit to Stillmarch

Lamont: will order staff to prepare rooms for his guests once we arrive via the portal, leaving them to scramble to do, leaving us some time to explore that afternoon

Lamont: There's the town, the lake, of course, the orchards....

Lamont: what would you like to see?

Lamont: There's the mountains as well, but theyr're more hazardous at this time of year.

Nik: You've said the lake is quite remarkable, I'd like to see that if we can?

Coifárë: That works for me. I want to see everything.

Lamont: We won't be here long enough, I expect...

Lamont: can take people out to one of the ramparts so you can get a sense of the scope of the lake

Coifárë: will lean on the merlon to look out over the estate.

Lamont: (YOu can probably see the mountains as well, hemming in the horizon, but only the still white capped peaks in the far distance, the water stretching out for miles and miles)

Coifárë: It's beautiful, Lamont.

Nik: It's bigger than I expected.

Nik: and yes, very beautiful!

Coifárë: And, of course, very defensible.

Lamont: nods

Coifárë: looks over their shoulder to give Lamont a smile.

Coifárë: When was the last time you were here?

Lamont: oh...

Lamont: thinks back

Lamont: Probably close to two years, if not more

Nik: Oh... that's far too long to be away from your home. Hopefully it won't be as long before you are back here again in the future.

Lamont: smiles a bit moreosely

Lamont: In the future, perhaps.

Lamont: Would you like to go down to the shore?

Coifárë: looks to Nik.

Nik: Certainly 🙂

Lamont: can lead you both down out of the keep and through an ornamental garden to the actual lake shore, which is more rocky than beach-y, but there are paths and stairs worn and cut out in place over the many years

Coifárë: Oh, I bet this is fantastic for swimming in the summer.

Nik: Is the water very cold?

Lamont: it's extremely cold

Lamont: There's an area to the west where there's a more suitable beach - the drop off is less extreme and the water there warm more

Nik: You know what would be perfect, if there was a good spot for it, is a sauna - you could go in and get all hot and sweaty, then run out and jump in the lake to cool off, then go back to warm up again...

Nik: seems like this is a mental image he quite enjoys ;)

Lamont: I think there is one at the beach house.....

Nik: oh, marvellous 🙂

Coifárë: smiles at that.

Lamont: but we have done similar things here

Lamont: less a sauna and more a bonfire to return to....

Nik: nods, smiling

Lamont: There's something of a custom for winter bathing

Coifárë: Oh?

Lamont: Oh, you cut a big hole in the ice

Lamont: in and out quickly, and then to the fires, with hot drinks and blankets and so on.... it's very invigorating, but not for everyone

Nik: I'd like to try that someday.

Lamont: nods

Lamont: There are plenty of other winter activities.... skating and skiing and so on

Coifárë: I will stick with the latter, with as much bundling as possible.

Coifárë: You northerners and your love of cold...

Lamont: smiles

Lamont: It's beautiful in the winter

Lamont: especially if there's been wind to blow the show off the lake

Lamont: the ice is so clear when its cold

Nik: you make it sound beautiful.

Coifárë: smiles at Lamont's description, and his seeming in better spirits.

Lamont: it is.

Nik: we will need to come back in the winter, then. And with plenty of warm blankets 🙂

Nik: says with a smile to Coifare

Lamont: will sit and pull off his boots so he can dip his toes in the water, even if it is freezing cold still

Lamont: I am biased as to the beauty here, I know, but I have never been anywhre with a more stunning winter

Nik: will remove his shoes and gingerly lift his robes so he can wade as well.

Lamont: be careful

Coifárë: I would imagine even our deepest winters in Vilyawen would be like autumn to you.

Lamont: the stone is slippery and it drops off quickly

Nik: nods

Coifárë: will sit on the shore, far enough back so as not to get wet.

Nik: I'll be careful...

Lamont: keeps a sharp eye on Nik just in case

Lamont: Autum is nice.

Coifárë: I am, of course, biased on multiple levels.

Lamont: smiles and glances back at them

Lamont: I will say the advantage of the northern clime is that our summers are only pleasantly hot

Lamont: Someday, it will feel more like my own place, and we shall come and go as we please, whatever the season

Coifárë: smiles.

Coifárë: I'm glad to hear you say that.

Lamont: takes a deep breath

Lamont: Hopefully, someday soon.

Coifárë: nods.

Lamont: Come back in Nik there's something else I want to show you....

Nik: oh, very well 🙂

Nik: will come back to shore and slip his shoes back on (wetly)

Lamont: will lead you a little further down the shorline to an area where there's like a little stone dock, and go to the end and pull something up in a basket

Coifárë: watches curiously.

Lamont: will pull out a glass bottle that's been sealed with wax

Lamont: would you care for a chilled drink?

Nik: ooh 🙂

Lamont: seems to have some practice at releasing the stopper

Lamont: No glasses I'm afraid

Coifárë: I'm sure we can manage.

Lamont: can pass around a bottle of chilled cherry infused cider

Lamont: will pour a little bit out into the lake as well, out of habit

Nik: is there just always a bottle there, or did you plant this ahead of time? 😉

Lamont: There usually are

Lamont: I haven't been back long enough to plant anything, but Arnaud used to stash things all over the place along the shore.

Lamont: I'm sure there's still things tucked away

Nik: nods

Coifárë: It's very nice.

Coifárë: And the pouring out...?

Nik: like a little gift left for you

Lamont: oh, for the guardian

Lamont: says to Coifare after a nod to Nik

Coifárë: will step to the end of the dock and look out over the lake.

Coifárë: Thank you.

Lamont: You might see it.... you never know. Keep an eye out for a flash of white

The Proposal

Nik: will go for a walk with Lamont in the orchard later in the afternoon

Lamont: will take his arm and everything

Nik: is a bit nervous, which probably you could pick up on even without your dragonmark

Lamont: Is everything alright?

Nik: Oh, yes! I was just... hoping to have a chance to talk with you privately, and now I do.

Lamont: asks, pausing between rows of sweet smelling fruit trees in full blossom, petals occasionally drifting down

Lamont: What is it?

Nik: takes a deep breath and gathers his composure as best as he can, then takes a folded piece of paper out of a pocket inside his robe.

Nik: I hope it's okay if I read this to you.

Lamont: ...alright...

Nik: clears his throat and will begin to read the note

Nik: Lamont...

Nik: It's always been easier for me to express myself in writing, because I have time to think about my words and not get nervous. I've spent so much time writing and re-writing what I want to say to you, trying to make sure it comes out right, because I wanted this moment to be perfect.

Nik: I am already yours in body, mind, and soul. Will you be mine, and do me the honour of accepting my hand in marriage?

Lamont: ...

Lamont: will pull Nik into an embrace and just hold him

Nik: um... then it's signed "Nikession"... but I guess that part was obvious...

Nik: says, slightly muffled, against your shoulder

Lamont: Nik....

Lamont: I love you.

Lamont: I want that.

Nik: smiles

Lamont: smiffs

Lamont: When....

Lamont: When I can say yes. I will.

Nik: when...?

Lamont: sniffs again and holds him tighter

Lamont: It's not.... I can't... It's not in my hands

Lamont: I want it....

Nik: looks confused

Nik: if you want it, then you could say yes

Lamont: If I say it.... and then.... if he doesn't agree...

Nik: pulls himself back slightly

Lamont: No...

Nik: Then what?

Lamont: pulls him right back, like he cant bear to let him go

Nik: I was willing to take risks and face uncertainty for us to be together. If you aren't, then... then can I really believe that you mean it when you say you love me?

Lamont: I don't know.

Lamont: I'm sorry.

Lamont: I'll make it work

Lamont: I'll do it

Nik: do what?

Lamont: Whatever I must to marry you.

Lamont: is crying

Nik: holds you close

Nik: please, don't cry... I don't want you to be sad...

Lamont: will try an pull himself together for you

Nik: has a few tears too

Lamont: You make me very happy

Nik: You make me happy too. I love you, Lamont.

Lamont: Nik.... Nikession. I love you so much. You honour me. I accept.

Lamont: will give you a very messy but passionate kiss

Nik: does burst into real tears at that, but also kisses back

Lamont: (some time later...)

Nik: gods... we are such a mess

Lamont: laughs breathlessly

Nik: says somewhat later, picking petals out of his hair

Lamont: You're beautiful

Nik: you too :3 I love seeing you smile like that.

Lamont: smooths out Nik's hair a bit , and will pull him to sit with him, back against a tree trunk

Nik: pulls his pink and green robe back into some semblance of order, at least enough to give him something between him and the tree bark

Lamont: There are.... so many things still. to say

Nik: nods

Lamont: Please.... I know I can be difficult

Lamont: Don't doubt that I want this

Nik: I don't.

Lamont: It's hard for me to see things simply, that's all

Nik: I said to my father when I told him I was intending to propose, that I would have to be very selfish to tell someone I love that he was too difficult to be with. I know that your circumstances are a large part of that difficulty, and we can work through that together.

Lamont: ...your father?

Nik: nods

Nik: Well, I did think I ought to make sure he was not inclined to oppose such a match, in case you did agree...

Lamont: He agreed?

Nik: Yes.

Lamont: takes a moment to process that

Nik: I think he said you were a "fine fellow"

Lamont: I see.

Lamont: That is... some relief

Lamont: There is also....

Lamont: Nik, my heart is...

Lamont: I don't know the words

Lamont: I love you

Nik: nods, listening

Lamont: But there is Coifare, too, whom I also love...

Nik: Oh, yes. I spoke with them too...

Nik: Actually they were very helpful at allowing me to get my own thoughts in order.

Lamont: ...what did they say?

Nik: Well... they encouraged me to tell you my feelings. And some other things that are perhaps not my place to say, but you know... that they care for you very much too. I wanted them to know that whatever happened with us, I wasn't going to... I don't know, push them out or anything.

Lamont: ...alright.

Nik: I care for them too - I haven't known them for as long as you have, but they've been very kind to me and I admire them greatly.

Lamont: ...thank you.

Lamont: I would like to speak to them...

Nik: Of course.

Nik: Do you want me to go with you, or you want to go alone?

Lamont: Alone.

Nik: nods

Lamont: but listen.

Lamont: I know that you love me

Lamont: I don't ever want that to be... something you can't bear, for any reason, or for it to hold you back...

Nik: considers that for a moment before responding

Nik: My father cautioned me that there would likely be obstacles ahead, but I said the same thing to him that I will to you. I would rather face those obstacles with you, than find someone else.

Nik: gives you a kiss

Lamont: nods, grasping your hand tightly, and will lean over to kiss your temple

Nik: So I'll be honest with you and tell you if something is troubling me, but you are not a burden to bear.

Lamont: thank you

Nik: but now - if you want to go talk to Coifare, you should do that. I'll retire to my bedchamber, so if you do want to find me later, you know where I'll be...

Lamont: I think perhaps, this evening. I need some time to think

Lamont Brings Coifárë to the Lake

Lamont: will come knock on Coifare's chamber door in the late evening

Coifárë: will put down the book they're reading and come answer the door, smiling when they see Lamont.

Coifárë: Oh, what a pleasant surprise to run into you here. Please come in.

Lamont: actually, would you walk with me?

Coifárë: Oh, uh, of course. Give me just a moment.

Coifárë: will go get a robe or other outerwear to put on to be more 'presentable'.

Lamont: nods and will give them a moment to, presumably, put on something

Lamont: will offer them his arm

Lamont: There's something I wanted to show you

Coifárë: takes Lamont's arm.

Coifárë: I'm intrigued. Should I ask, or let it be a surprise?

Lamont: I think it will work as a surprise. I apologize in advance for all of the stairs, however.

Coifárë: smiles.

Coifárë: I'm sure I'll be fine, and I have support if you manage to tire me out.

Lamont: smirks at that, blushing slightly, and will lead them up to the top of the keep's tallest tower, which does in fact have a lot of stairs and such, but they can always take some breaks along the way to build the suspense ;)

Lamont: Fortunately, there's only a very light wind off the lake tonight, but if you're chilled, you can have my coat

Coifárë: I'll keep that in mind, thank you.

Coifárë: There are plenty of ways to keep warm, of course.

Narrator: (Is this when they're already at the top of the tower?)

Lamont: Oh, of course....

Lamont: (Just about to head outside)

Narrator: (kk)

Coifárë: is happy to be led wherever.

Lamont: will then lead them out, to the highest point of view for the lake without going into the mountains, with the stars reflected perfectly in the calm waters, and the moon, large and bright, in the center of the waters, looking essentially like an iris of a large, dark, starry eye

Lamont: It's more striking an effect from the air, or from higher in the mountains. There's a place by the north lodge that ideal, but it's quite far for such a short trip...

Lamont: But still, I thought you would like to see it

Coifárë: (elduar) Oh my gods...

Coifárë: Lamont, it's...beautiful.

Coifárë: I don't know what to...thank you.

Lamont: I've wanted to show you for a long time

Coifárë: (elduar) And thanks to you as well, lord of beauty, for this wonder.

Coifárë: I think I would stay up here all the time if I'd grown up here.

Coifárë: Other than the cold, of course, but I'd wrap myself til I was a sphere for this.

Coifárë: is still looking out over the sight, but will reach for Lamont's hand.

Lamont: I have spent a lot of time here

Lamont: will take it

Lamont: It was always a good place to be alone

Coifárë: Then I'm honored you've shared it with me.

Lamont: I.....I have many things I would share with you, and gladly

Lamont: I think you know..... earlier, this afternoon, Nik asked me to marry him

Coifárë: I... had an inkling.

Coifárë: smiles.

Lamont: I accepted, despite my fears...

Coifárë: I'm glad to hear that. He loves you very much.

Coifárë: squeezes Lamont's hand.

Lamont: squeezes back

Lamont: I love him too.

Lamont: And you.... You have taught me so much about love

Coifárë: I will take that in the spirit I believe it is intended, and refrain from a typical response.

Coifárë: I feel like I've had quite the education in that regard in the last few weeks myself.

Lamont: smiles a bit wryly

Lamont: how do you mean?

Coifárë: smiles wistfully and places a hand on Lamont's cheek.

Coifárë: I love you, Lamont, and I love Nik, but...I'm not sure I love you the way that Nik does, or possibly how you love him. I hope...I hope what I have to offer doesn't pale in comparison.

Lamont: Must it be like that, with... judgements and assessments

Coifárë: I hope not, but I worry...

Lamont: I worry.

Lamont: I was afraid.... I am afraid. That you... might think I am... happy enough? Satisfied? and..

Lamont: I cherish all you have to offer me.

Coifárë: I could not have put it better.

Coifárë: will move to kiss Lamont.

Lamont: will kiss them back

Coifárë: (after a moment, pulling back) I want you to be happy and satisfied and safe and content and well. And I want to help provide that.

Lamont: I want that for you.... I want you to feel... free, to be who you are

Coifárë: You said something, back in Therma Alba, about being a 'single bloom' in my 'glorious garden'. I hope you realize there is a world of difference between being 'single' and being 'singular'.

Lamont: I believe you.

Coifárë: smirks.

Coifárë: That's good. I try not to lie, so I'd hate for someone to get the wrong impression of me.

Lamont: Your love will always feel special to me

Coifárë: And yours to me.

Lamont: Then that's enough, isn't it?

Coifárë: It is for me.

Lamont: then - please know you are welcome in my... mine and Nik's.... home, anytime, no matter where we make it.

Lamont: We will always make space for you, as long as you desire it

Coifárë: You're truly testing my ability to refrain from innuendo, but I appreciate and mirror the sentiment.

Lamont: smirks

Lamont: Well I did almost say bed but I didn't want to be so limiting

Coifárë: smiles.

Coifárë: You know me well.

Lamont: and I welcome all of your innuendos

Coifárë: There will be so much more to come. 😉

Lamont: Well... if you promise, I shall do my best to provide proper set ups...

Lamont: will draw them closer and make good on that >:3

Lavinia Talks to Her Sister About Her Future

Katherina: barges into her sister's room and flops down on her bed

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): Kitty! How are you feeling?

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): is sitting with her arm in a sling.

Katherina: I am SO glad to be home, after all of that!

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): It was terribly distressing, yes.

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): does not seem all that distressed, honestly.

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): I was so worried that you and mother had gotten hurt or... worse.

Katherina: Well physically we were fine, I still dont' think I have recovered from being so suffocated by His Highness's ego :p

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): Surely it couldn't have been THAT bad...

Katherina: I was very relieved to be rescued. I'm glad to know not all of House Brescia is like that. How is your arm?

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): Mostly better. I'm told that even with the healing potion there will be some scarring, though.

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): But I suppose it's better than being digested by a demon.

Katherina: nods

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): Besides, I believe that scars might actually be a bonus to Gueir... Lord Kyrnon.

Katherina: I haven't had a chance to ask what happened there.... You're reconciled somehow? what happened?

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): Apparently he had sent me a letter last week that I never received about how he would be there with Magus Auspex because his mother instisted, but he had already told her that nothing would come of it because of me. I feel like an idiot. I shouldn't have been so quick to assume the worst.

Katherina: Ugh! Do you believe him? I mean, I suppose it makes sense, but he coudl have just used his words to say so when I asked, goodness!

Katherina: His attitude certainly did not help :p

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): I do. When he came to rescue me he... he had to use his gift on me, to give me energy. It was like... like I could feel his soul. I've never felt anything like it.

Katherina: His attitude certainly did not help :p

Katherina: Feel his soul  :o

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): I don't know how else to ddescribe it

Katherina: that sounds....exceedingly intimate :o

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): It... was.

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): Suffice to say, I do not doubt his affections.

Katherina: frowns

Katherina: well.... if you're sure.... you know though, for a man to uh... share himself intimately does not mean his heart is true....

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): When he came back to Therma Alba, he didn't look for Juno. He came straight to my room.

Katherina: Well, she is a soldier! surely she could take care fo her self to some extent...

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): Trust me, Kitty.

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): I don't know much, but I know this.

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): Though I do wish I knew what happened to that letter.

Katherina: Oh, I hate that you had such distress over it!

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): I suppose that distress is how we grow.

Katherina: makes a face

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): I am sure you must have grown immeasurably from your imprisonment with Lord Brescia.

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): teases

Katherina: grown disgusted perhaps

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): laughs

Katherina: But now what? You will resume your courtship? What about magus Auspex?

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): With all the demons and such we didn't really have time to disuss it, but I think it's safe to say that yes, we will be moving ahead with things. I hope to be able to ask mother for her blessing by the end of the season.

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): From what Gueiris said, Juno is fine with the situation. She has other prospects.

Katherina: Oh well, good for her then, I suppose.

Katherina: Well then.... I shall be happy for you, and you know I will help however I can:3

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): smiles and throws her good arm around you.

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): Oh, I know you shall, Kitty!

Katherina: hugs back

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): And I will be happy for you, whatever you decide for your future.

Katherina: no wonder you seem so calm - I was afraid it was the shock, but now I see it is just a meanseure of peace :3

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): It's a lot of things, I suppose.

Lavinia/Tuck (he/they): I never thought that I would ever get to live the adventures that I had dreamed of as a girl, but now it looks like not only will I have that chance, but... I'll have someone to live them with.

Tea Time With Nik and Chitara

Chitara: will come over once the boys return to Highmark

Nik: welcomes Chitara for tea

Nik: I'm so glad you could make it! I know you're busy with so many political meetings and affairs at the moment.

Chitara: Well, yes, but I've always got time to see you

Nik: smiles warmly at that

Nik: So, tell me - was Therma Alba everything you hoped it would be? I know the ending was a bit... not ideal.... but other than that?

Chitara: grins and also blushes a little

Oh, I had a wonderful time. Even if the ending was not great

Nik: I'm glad to hear that. Was there anything in particular that stood out, or simply enjoying the surroundings?

Chitara: The company was also excellent

Nik: I thought so too!

Nik: If you can keep a secret...

Chitara: You know I can

Nik: looks around in case, but leans in closer

Nik: I became engaged to Lord Stillmarch! We haven't said anything publicly yet, as it still requires some... negotiations... family matters, you know. But I'm very excited about it!

Chitara: covers her mouth so as not to squee

I'm so happy for you!

Nik: grins

Nik: Well, thank you! I know it probably seems quite sudden, but I've known him for many years, at least through letters.

Chitara: Well, if all goes well within a few weeks I'll have an engagement to announce with someone I've known for way less than you've known him, so I'm no one to judge

Nik: oh really? how exciting!

Nik: Can you tell me who it is, or is it a secret still?

Chitara: Well, it would be a secret, but I can share with you. I spent most of the weekend at Therma Alba with Duke Harcourt.

Nik: Oh, he's very handsome!

Chitara: He's also very talented.

winks

But also, we're pretty well suited, and I have come to something of an unofficial arrangement with his excellent sister.

Nik: Oh, well, that's marvellous! I wish you all the very best, and hope that it will all come together flawlessly 🙂

Nik: That would certainly be a very... advantageous match, I believe.

Chitara: It is a much more advantageous match than I had expected to find

Nik: If it isn't too impertinent a question - will his position be of benefit to your cause? I don't mean to suggest that's why you would fancy him, of course. But surely, a duke would be quite a political coup.

Chitara: Well, yes.

shrugs

I won't lie and say it doesn't factor in. I have been under orders to find someone from a Marked house to marry, the exciting part is that we're actually... suited. I think I will enjoy being married to him

Nik: That's wonderful to hear. I really am glad for you! I know that it isn't always possible to put aside political considerations, but if they coincide with your own desires, then that's the best possible outcome 🙂

Chitara: I entirely agree. I could not have hoped for any more

Nik: I look forward to celebrating once the news is all finalized and announced!

Chitara: As will I, when yours is formally announced! I'm so delighted for you both

Nik: Are you planning any gatherings further on in the season?

Chitara: Oh, yes, we're having an Akhasic expo that will culminate in a ball. We haven't sent out invitations quite yet but you will of course be invited, as will your fiancee

Nik: That should be a very exciting event! I'm already looking forward to it 😄

Chitara: That is the hope. We're trying to really make sure everyone can get a look at what we could bring if we were incorporated

Nik: Well, you know that you have my support, for whatever small value that has in the grand scheme of things.

Chitara: I do appreciate it. You're a more valuable ally than you think, especially now that you are Interesting to Society. You can't underestimate how much interesting people supporting a cause can do.

Nik: laughs lightly at that

Nik: Interesting? Me? I don't know why I would be, but thank you for saying so 🙂

Chitara: Well, you just had this house party that got attacked and defended by genuine celebrities. And now you're about to get married to the tragically ill boy from earlier in the season

Nik: nods a bit more seriously

Nik: I suppose it is as you say... although it wasn't my intention.

Chitara: Well, thankfully it doesn't have to be intentional.

Nik: nods

Chitara: But... I'm not in the know and I don't have to be to know something's going on. Is there anything I can do to help you and Lamont?

Nik: Oh... well... it's complicated. My family quite support the match, but our worry is that his uncle may refuse.

Chitara: But why? You're an excellent match for him, aren't you? Is there some political nuance I'm missing or is his uncle just an ass?

Nik: Um... it's a delicate situation. Lamont's uncle is his guardian until he turns 25 or marries, and so he has control over Lamont's wealth until that point. And... he has shown signs that he doesn't want to let that power go so easily. He might not object, I don't know for sure - it's only a worry at this point.

Chitara: sighs

Ah, of course. The things people do for power.

Nik: nods gloomily

Nik: So I don't know that there is much that you could do, unless you wanted to bribe him or something.

Nik: says as a joke

Chitara: laughs

No, but if nothing else I can hide him away. That's... kind of what I do.

Nik: chuckles at that

Nik: I'll let you know if it comes to that, I suppose!

Chitara: nods

Seriously, if at any point I can be of help, let me know. You're one of my oldest and dearest friends.

Nik: I appreciate that. I do mean it when I say I'll bear it in mind, if anything does occur to me.

Chitara: Good. And good luck dealing with the elder Stillmarch.

Nik: Thank you. And best of luck to you as well in securing your Duke.

Chitara: Thank you, I appreciate it

Leonora Hosts Nik and Lamont

Leonora: will have arranged for a sitting room to be set up for her guests, in advance.

Magga: will wear a respectable jacket and tie, so as to make a good impression on these guests

Leonora: You look fine, dear. Don't play with your tie, it's perfectly straight.

Lamont: has probably not told Nik a lot, only that he has some significant business that he shoudl be part of, if they are to be married, and that Lady Leonora has offered her friendship and support

Magga: Hmph, fine.

Nik: is curious but will accompany Lamont gladly, of course

Leonora: has got herself a glass of wine already, to get ready to share the news with Lamont.

Lamont: will let the servants announce himself and Nik, and presumably be seen inside to wherever our hosts have set up

Leonora: Ah, Evenor, Stillmarch, good evening.

Leonora: And you both know my husband, Lord Wengal?

Lamont: yes, good evening. Thank you for seeing us

Nik: Good evening, a pleasure to see you both.

Magga: nods politely

Magga: Yes, good evening. Have a seat, please. Some wine?

Nik: Thank you, that's very kind.

Leonora: sits and takes a more-than-average sip of her wine, then pauses for a moment to collect her thoughts.

Lamont: Yes, thank you

Leonora: Stillmarch ... I know we have the matter to discuss that has been the subject of our discussions previously.

Leonora: And we will discuss that.

Lamont: knows now that he probably will need it :V

Leonora: But first there is a different matter to which we must attend.

Leonora: activates her dragonmark.

Leonora: This conversation must be, for now at least, in absolute privacy.

Lamont: what is it?

Lamont: asks, sounding concerned

Leonora: After the recent events at Therma Alba, there was a discovery made, on one of the bodies of the attackers.

Leonora: Shortly before I left to return to Highmark, your father, Lord Evenor, he shared with me this letter.

Leonora: hands it over to Lamont.

Lamont: looks it over

Lamont: ...

Lamont: looks back up at her sharply

Leonora: It is in a cipher, of the sort used by the Sentinel house, perhaps some years ago. Not a current code, you understand.

Leonora: You recognize the hand, do you not?

Lamont: Yes.

Nik: leans over slightly so he can peek at it too, although it doesn't mean much to him at the moment

Lamont: It's from my uncle.

Lamont: Why...

Lamont: what does it say?

Lamont: says peering at it as though he can maybe figure it out

Leonora: It took me some hours to decipher it. But ultimately it surrendered its secrets.

Leonora: It discusses the presence of several key persons who would be at Therma Alba, and the dates of their presence. Fyan Akan Nabari was named, for instance. And so, too, were you.

Lamont: what?

Leonora: nods.

Nik: frowns

Leonora: It is a description, in your uncle's hand, of key persons to be present, at the time the attack happened, found on the corpse of one of them.

Leonora: I should add that it is neither signed by him, nor is it addressed to anyone in particular who could be identifiable.

Lamont: looks at Nik, and will take his hand, and then back to Leonora

Leonora: Can you think of any reason why he would be sending this letter innocuously, and it was simply intercepted?

Lamont: I... I don't know. I'm sure he could give some reason.

Nik: squeezes Lamont's hand

Nik: My father gave this to you?

Leonora: He did, Lord Evenor. In my capacity as an officer of the military intelligence division of the city of Nachtur, and of House Palatine.

Nik: oh, I see... how did he get it?

Lamont: Presumably, if it was found with one of the attackers, it was brought to him for that reason....

Nik: nods

Leonora: From the guards at Therma Alba. Its existence is known only very, very narrowly.

Leonora: Your father was also planning on sharing its contents with Fyan Akan Nabari, as well as Hraal Cziernos. But no others.

Leonora: I have the original, specifically, with the goal of sharing it with you, Stillmarch, to see if you knew the hand as well as I thought I did.

Leonora: Regrettably, it seems we both know it well enough.

Lamont: nods, looking grim

Leonora: Is there some other context that I should have to understand this? Why would ... why?

Lamont: looks at Nik again, and looks distraught

Lamont: That is too far... isn't it? Even for him....

Nik: do you think it was ... that the attack was his plan?

Leonora: No, I can't imagine that would be the case. These cultists have been causing trouble for a long time, and Akan's visit to Therma Alba was to recuperate from a previous incursion.

Leonora: But perhaps he had an arrangement with someone, to provide them information about when and where certain people would be, that served some other purpose for him?

Lamont: is doing his best to stay composed but is clearly extremely upset nonetheless

Nik: Lamont... this could be the proof that you are not wrong about him.

Lamont: some other purpose.... how terrible

Leonora: So here we are. I know this must come as a shock. I am angered and perplexed, all at once.

Lamont: nods

Leonora: I know this was not the matter you hoped we would discuss tonight, but I think you will agree that this needs to be addressed far more urgently.

Lamont: Of course.

Lamont: What... what will happen?

Leonora: That is quite unclear to me at present. Who would hold the jurisdiction to demand answers from your uncle? I am no legal mind, but this is clearly not simple.

Leonora: I was hoping that you would have some sense of a course of action you might want to pursue, and in which we could help you, perhaps, if you were willing.

Lamont: Lady Machel, or her parents, certainly

Leonora: nods.

Leonora: I will caution you, that none of this will be simple or fast, necessarily.

Leonora: And as your guardian, I presume he still has broad authority over much of your life.

Lamont: nods

Leonora: Your life, the past several years, it has not been an easy one, has it, Stillmarch?

Lamont: it has taken several improvements of late

Leonora: It is strange to think that, but for one or two twists and turns, I might be your auntie right now.

Nik: smiles slightly at that

Leonora: But I also think that things are how they are, often for a reason, not under our control.

Magga: Nora please, don't make the boy think about that right now.

Leonora: My deity, Bahamut, stands for justice, and never turning away from those who are oppressed.

Leonora: Whatever you need in this, you have the support of House Wengal.

Lamont: Thank you.

Leonora: And then, when this is resolved, we can turn to brighter discussions.

Lamont: I had though to broach the topic of my uncle this evening, but this is...

Lamont: more serious than even I had imagined

Nik: Can I ask... what are the brighter discussions?

Nik: asks warily

Leonora: We intend to proceed with discussions with you, Stillmarch, regarding the matter of our baby. There are, of course, other candidates, but we would be fools not to see that an agreement with you would be very beneficial.

Lamont: nods

Lamont: Please, at this stage, I think Lamont is fine.

Lamont: I had not elaborated this with Nik as yet.

Lamont: But, as I am hoping to announce our engagement formally soon, I thought it best to involve him

Leonora: Oh, my congratulations to the both of you!

Nik: blushes

Lamont: Thank you.

Nik: Thank you

Nik: um... baby?

Lamont: Yes...

Lamont: glances at Leonora to see if she want to explain or if I should

Leonora: Lord Wengal and I are looking for a potential father for our heir.

Nik: oh! oh, I see 😮

Nik: well, of course, I trust Lamont would do an excellent job.

Lamont: blushes furiously

Lamont: There are a number of considerations

Magga: I don't think there was any doubt about the quality of his... job.

Lamont: look at a very interesting corner of the table

Lamont: In any case.

Leonora: Yes, quite right, in any case.

Nik: Oh, well, yes. What are the other considerations?

Lamont: I had thought some about what I might ask from you

Lamont: As you say, my uncle is still my guardian, and his approval is still needed in any of my affairs

Lamont: whether that is my engagement, or anything else... contractual.

Lamont: I am not willing to let go of the first however

Lamont: however long it may take to resolve

Nik: smiles at that

Lamont: Despite his position, however, I expect that we will find ourselves in a similar position to you, in due course

Leonora: nods.

Lamont: gives Nik a slightly apologetic look

Leonora: I am fully convinced that, if the matter of your uncle can be dealt with, you and I can come to a very satisfactory contract, Lamont.

Magga: If a few words in the right ear would help persuade your uncle that it's in his best interests to not cause problems here, it could be arranged. But maybe he requires a more... formal intervention.

Lamont: nods to Leonora

Lamont: I suspect that may be the case.

Lamont: but it will not be easy to prove his involvement in this, or any other matters....

Lamont: shakes his head.

Lamont: I will speak at length with Lady Machel.

Leonora: Very good. And I will continue to attend to matters regarding the investigation into the attack.

Lamont: nods

Lamont: I expect she will reach out to you on that matter as well.

Leonora: All right then. I look forward to our next conversation.

Lamont: Like wise. Thank you both.

Nik: Thank you, it was very nice to see you again!

Lamont Discusses His Engagement With Thurston

Lamont: (probably someone on staff will let Thurston know that Lamont has turned up in the stables before he actually comes to the house)

Thurston Allard: will come out to the stables to interrupt Lamont

Well, welcome back. I was starting to think you didn't want to be near me.

Lamont: turns, keeps a hand on Briar's neck

Lamont: Hello uncle.

Lamont: looks like he is actually doing really well - better than when he first came home for the season, even

Thurston Allard: looks him over thoughtfully You look well, at least. I had no idea what I'd find when I found you, with you running off so abruptly. Did you not receive my letter?

Lamont: Your letter? I'm afraid not.

Thurston Allard: shakes his head sadly

Ah, that explains much. I can't blame you for wanting to take a trip home after all you've been through, but I had sent a letter to let you know I was coming to make sure you were alright. By the time I reached Therma Alba you were long gone, it seemed.

Lamont: nods.

Lamont: It had been some time since I'd been to Stillmarch. It was good to return, if briefly.

Thurston Allard: I imagine it would be. You are truly not obligated to stay here, if you would prefer to relocate to Stillmarch for a while. I am your guardian, but you are more than old enough to manage yourself without me.

Lamont: pauses

Lamont: That is something of a change in sentiment.

Lamont: But if that is how you feel then - No, I'm not interested in relocating to Stillmarch at this time, but I will find an appropriate lodging elsewhere.

Thurston Allard: sighs and rubs his forehead tiredly

I have never been... good with people, especially younger people that are under my authority. I have tried to do right by you, but after the events of this season, I have to accept that you are your own man, and you know what's best for yourself. I do hope you will stop by and visit your Uncle from time to time

Lamont: is probably not completely succeeding at looking at you like you have three heads

Lamont: I will not neglect my family duty

Lamont: (What are his intentions here?)

Lamont: But if you intend to permit me to arrange my own affairs, that is welcome news.

Thurston Allard: Of course not. You've been a dutiful lad since your brother's passing. I am merely an overcautious man, and apparently a bit of an overbearing one.

Chitara: (Oh he absolutely just wants to convince Lamont he has good intentions)

Lamont: (ah ha ha)

Lamont: Then. I have your leave to announce my engagement to Lord Evenor.

Thurston Allard: clearly startled I had heard you had grown quite close but... are you sure that is wise? You are still young, and Lord Evenor is even younger by his peoples' standards.

Lamont: I am without a single doubt.

Lamont: His family supports the match.

Thurston Allard: Well, lets take this at a reasonable pace, at least. You and Lord Evenor must come to dinner here, and we can discuss the matter. Forgive an old man his foibles, I would like to speak to your prospective spouse before I sign off on the marriage.

Lamont: Are you prepared to let me manage my own affairs or not?

Thurston Allard: I said you can choose your living situation, I didn't mean I would completely step away- I would be remiss as a guardian if I didn't at least have a conversation with the boy.

Lamont: 😒

Lamont: Then after I have finalized these arrangements, I will host you both.

Thurston Allard: nods That seems a reasonable compromise. I will look forward to it.

hesitates for a moment before clapping a friendly hand on his shoulder

I am happy for you. I never did manage to make a match, I hope yours proves strong.

Chitara: (He weirdly completely means this one)

Lamont: Thank you.

Lamont: will come in a little while later to arrange for his things to start getting packed, and some sent to his temporary lodging

Chitara and Vaze Discuss Her Engagement and Dinner Plans

Chitara: Has come back a bit frazzled, but seemingly in high spirits

Vaze: can be found going over some correspondence in the study

Vaze: Ah, you are back! how was your trip? I heard there was some kind of attack?

Chitara: comes into the study with a smile after freshening up from the trip

I imagine this is the absolute best trip I could have had considering we were attacked by a hoard of demons.

Vaze: I'm glad to see you unharmed. Come, sit and tell me all about it.

Vaze: will have a servant bring some tea

Chitara: will happily come to sit by the fire with him

Well, would you like the good news or the thrilling tale of adventure first?

Vaze: perks up at that

Vaze: Oh, let's hear the good news. I could use some these days.

Chitara: Well, while I was at Therma Alba, I made the acquaintance of the Duke Sebastien Harcourt. You might recognize the name as being from a dragonmarked human noble house of the area.

She winks

Vaze: Oh? A duke, is it? That's quite a prestigious connection.

Chitara: We suit each other rather well, I think. And I have also befriended his sister, who is rather in charge of his affairs and thinks I have a reasonable shot of getting him to propose.

Vaze: Oh, my! Do you think he is amenable to our political outlook?

Chitara: ... Truthfully, he's a bit... um... not politically minded. But he is fond of me, and I am confident he would support me and my political work here

Vaze: nods

Vaze: Someone who is indifferently disposed towards political causes might be preferable in some ways. What about your own feelings in the affair? Do you think you could be happy with him?

Chitara: blushes

Yes, I think so. He's... well, he's everything I'd hoped to find. I can't precisely claim to be in love with him, but I think we would have a good life together.

Vaze: You have a pragmatic outlook on such matters. What about his estate? his income? Is his reputation good? He is highborn of course, but will he be able to provide a comfortable place for you to live, and behave suitably towards you?

Chitara: I have not seen his estate, but his family are quite well off from their perfumes- I am told they are extremely well regarded in Nerathi circles and have been for centuries. And we have had a very frank conversation about what we're looking for out of marriage- I think we are precisely matched on those expectations

Vaze: Then, if you think this match would be suitable for you, I have no objections to it - provided, of course, that once I meet the young man nothing seems amiss.

Vaze: Perhaps it would be appropriate to invite him - and his sister, you said? - over for dinner one evening in order for me to get to know them.

Chitara: I had already suggested as much to Rose- his sister, I mean. I'm looking forward to it

Vaze: Wonderful, then - we shall have to impress them with some good Ahkasic hospitality!

Chitara: grins

Sounds like an excellent evening!

The Doumens Have Dinner With Chitara and Vaze

Rosalie: is dressed for dinner, seated opposite of Sebastian and studying him

Sebastien: What, is my cravat crooked?

Sebastien: smooths it down

Rosalie: It's my turn to tease you, brother.

Sebastien: Oh, tease me, is it? grins

Sebastien: The difference is, Rosie, that I have no shame :V

Rosalie: laughs

Rosalie: This is true, and it makes you exceedingly frustrating.

Rosalie: However, I have made friends with our host, so I must ask... leans forward and looks serious, but with a mischievous glint

What are your intentions?

Sebastien: And I have no shame about that either! But I do hope to make a good impression

Lamont: (Shame)

Sebastien: With Lady Chitara? Well, we are quite compatible I think, the question might - is it enduring? But I think between the two of us, there's no need for that. We have quite similar views on that.

Rosalie: Well...I suppose you can never be sure if it is enduring, even with the greatest of loves.

Sebastien: I've always thought that, you know, what if something better comes along? But it hasn't, my infatuations don't last, you know, so I'm not concerned if it should now. The question is more what kind of peaceable life could we build? She's quite ambitious and of course, you know, I'm not at all.

Sebastien: I think we could give each other what space we needed should it come it that, we certainly have the resources for it. But would it trouble you?

Rosalie: raises a brow

What would trouble me?

Sebastien: well, I know you want me to settle, I know I should but you know I have little inclination for purely my own sake. But I am easy to please. You're more of a romantic, and i know you're only starting to let yourself think of such things... If it would stand in the way of your happiness, then that's a duty that I take more seriously.

Rosalie: I think...you are very much like Father. He was happy to live on his own until he absolutely needed to have an heir. And I feel...should he have begun that search in earnest sooner in life, he may have found someone more compatible to his lifestyle than Mother.

Rosalie: I would like you to be happier in marriage than they were.

Sebastien: Well, that's a small enough challenge. I make my own happiness, and if I am like father, I'm much more frank about that, and Chitara understands

Rosalie: nods

Rosalie: It won't impede my search for my own partner, but Seb, you are my brother and closest friend. I would not truly be happy if you were unhappy.

Sebastien: Then, rest easy, Rosie. I'm perfectly pleased.

Rosalie: smiles

So, are you considering something more long term, then?

Rosalie: I think you and Chitara would do well together, for what it's worth.

Sebastien: Well, I think so. I should speak with her more, or course.

Sebastien: I think we are in alignment, though. I know she's meant to be on the market.

Rosalie: nods

Well, then I am satisfied. And I shall find some other way to vex you.

Sebastien: Well, now, speaking of vexing me, the one thing to know if we are truly compatible is, I must take her out to one of my favorite halls! So, as it is a matter of procuring a match I will hear nothing about the expenses, alright?

Rosalie: narrows eyes

I see your game, Seb, but I shall let it slide. Within reason.

Sebastien: well always!

Sebastien: I'm quite reasonable!

Sebastien: will descend form the carriage and help his sister out, and then follow after servants once we are announced

Vaze: will be present to welcome our guests

Chitara: will also be present, if a teensy bit nervous

Vaze: Good evening, Duke Harcourt, Lady Rosalie, and welcome!

Rosalie: smiles in greeting

Rosalie: Good evening, my lord. It is an honor to be invited!

Sebastien: yes, thank you so much!

Chitara: Oh, we're delighted to have you!

Vaze: I trust you brought your appetites, as there is quite a feast prepared!

Sebastien: Oh, Chitara my dear you are always a delight ^-^

Sebastien: And that sounds wonderful.

Chitara: smiles and blows him a kiss

And you are an abject flatterer, I love it

Vaze: will lead the way into the dining room, where an assortment of Ahkasic delicacies are laid out

Vaze: Now, some of these dishes may be a little unfamiliar, but please ask if there is anything you aren't sure about. We will surely not be insulted - it's just a pleasure to share our food and our customs with you.

Sebastien: Oh wonderful - Chitara has been telling me about some of her favourites, so I looks forward to sampling it all.

Chitara: Oh, we've got all the ones I've told you about here, I think. We've got pretty much everything here

Sebastien: That does sound liek quite a lot!

Rosalie: That sound wonderful, I enjoy trying new things.

Vaze: Then please, let us sit and enjoy! There is no need to stand on formality here.

Sebastien: will seat his sister and Chitara if she lets him

Chitara: will let him do so

Just be careful, a lot of this has more spice than most of the food I've seen in Highmark.

Vaze: nods emphatically

Vaze: Although in some cases, the proper spices were not available, so some substitutions had to be made... but it will suffice!

Sebastien: Oh well, I shall be careful, then!

Vaze: If you find anything too spicy, there is plenty of bread, or this mint sauce is pleasantly cooling.

Chitara: The couscous is good for that too

Sebastien: Oh that's another use for your herbs there, Rosie ^-^

Vaze: Ah, you are an herbalist?

Rosalie: Amateur, I would say.

Chitara: Maybe, but a very skilled amateur. I saw you in the stillroom

Vaze: I have been considering whether the climate here would permit importing certain herbs from home - but perhaps in a greenhouse? I will need to seek your wisdom in such matters.

Sebastien: Yes, don't listen to her, she'd just been comparing herself to the Curiate Amathalis lately which is, I must sa, rather a high standard!

Rosalie: blushes a little

Sebastien: Oh you out to speak to Councillor Callais, he just build a new one, he loves plants form all over.

Rosalie: I must admit, I have tried to branch out to herbs from different regions with a little success.

Vaze: Fascinating!

Rosalie: I have dreams of starting a new parfum line with the more hard to find scents.

Chitara: Some of our local herbs back home could be really good for that, I would think?

Vaze: nods

Sebastien: and flowers I'm sure. Everyone likes things a little exotic winks at Chitara

Vaze: And what about you, Duke Harcourt? What are your interests?

Sebastien: Oh, you know, I keep myself entertained. Rosie likes to involve herself in business, but it's not relly necessary, its beeen running itself for generations now.

Rosalie: My brother is the sportsman of the family.

Sebastien: Indeed yes!

Vaze: Ah, sports? You must keep quite active then.

Sebastien: I keep telling Chitara I shall take her out riding and sfins her some nice places for her painting

Sebastien: and yes, I ride every day if I can - keeps the blood up, you know?

Chitara: We'll have to do that sometime soon, I'd love to get some more painting done. I haven't had much time for it since we got to Nerath.

Sebastien: The one you showed me from Therma Alba was quite lovely

Vaze: My niece is indeed very talented! I'm glad you have an eye for her skills.

Chitara: Oh, thank you, both of you. I'm mostly a painter for my own sanity rather than as a proper artist, but it's always nice to hear good things about one's work

Sebastien: Oh, very much so ^-^

Vaze: As I'm sure you know, I care greatly for Chitara, and I would hope that any potential suitor would be able to keep her interest.

Sebastien: glances her way

Sebastien: Well I can't imagine she would ever allow herself to be bored for long.

Sebastien: if one can't keep up, they must simply respect a lady's own drive and ambition

Vaze: This is true. You think you are capable of dealing with a headstrong and intelligent spouse, then? One who has strong opinions, and will not simply say 'yes dear' and smile for you?

Rosalie: smiles wryly

He already has such in a sister.

Chitara: quietly dying in her seat of embarassment

Sebastien: Oh yes, I'm quite accustomed, I think I manage alright, eh Rosie?

Sebastien: really I think that's more my place, to smile, and say 'yes dear'.

Rosalie: You have always been supportive of my ambitions.

Sebastien: Exactly ^-^

Vaze: That's a promising sign, then. You have my blessing to proceed with a courtship, if such is your intention.

Sebastien: Oh, wonderful, thank you! If the lady is amenable, of course.

Chitara: smiles at Seb

I believe it was the general idea, yes. But... now that we've got that sorted, might I suggest you both try the falafel? It's quite good. Quite herby.

Rosalie: Oh, yes please.

Chitara: will pass Rose the plate and try to compose herself again

Sebastien: well then - yes dear ^-^

Chitara: grins

Okay, I could get used to that

Rosalie: laughs lightly

Juno and Rosalie Meet in the Park

Rosalie: will be in Parliament Park, dressed in a simple, yet fashionable day dress, sitting on a bench and taking notes

Juno: will be walking through the park with a broadsheet folded under her arm and a packet of fish and chips in her hand.

Juno: pauses just as she's about to Rose and actually realizes who it is.

Juno: Lady Doumens, what a pleasant surprise.

Rosalie: looks up from her notes, in surprise Oh, Magus Auspex, hello! It's Rose, please.

Juno: Of course, and likewise, Juno. May I join you?

Rosalie: Yes, please! gestures to the bench

Juno: will take a seat, propping her cane against the side of the bench.

Juno: Chip?

Rosalie: smiles

Absolutely.

Juno: holds out her food with a smile.

Juno: I hope I'm not interrupting. You looked intent on your work there.

Rosalie: takes a chip and eats it before responding

No, it is a most welcome interruption. I've been pouring over plans for Founder's Day.

Juno: Oh? What sort of plans do you have?

Rosalie: Well, it's all very rudimentary right now. And boringly traditional.

Juno: How so? I mean, it is a tradition, so it seems like it...comes with the territory?

Rosalie: sighs Yes, but I would love to see something a little new. Perhaps with the closing festivities, or music.

Juno: Well, what would you do if you could do anything you wanted?

Rosalie: Oh, dear, what a long list.smiles

Juno: I have my whole lunch break.

Rosalie: laughs

Rosalie: I was thinking we could add some goods booths for local artisans on one end, and music and game son the other. gestures toward the park

Juno: Oh, that sounds nice. It'd be good to see more people up here than just the Houses.

Rosalie: nods It will require some work, for sure. I'll need to either host a sign up and have some form of audition, or travel to local artisans and extend invitations.

Juno: Certainly you write to some of the guild heads for their assistance. I'm sure it'd be an honor for any to be included.

Juno: Oh! I have a friend who works for the Resource Council who could probably help, too. I can put you in touch with some people.

Juno: A lot of the guilds have to deal with them, so he got contacts all over town.

Rosalie: Oh, that would be very helpful, thank you!

Rosalie: I will be in your debt

Juno: Who's keeping track at this point. 😉

Juno: Happy to help.

Rosalie: laughs

Yes, the ledger has become quite confused at this point. Might as well do away with it.

Juno: smiles.

Juno: How are you, by the way, given all the excitement at Therma Alba? Can't be too plussed if you're planning all this.

Rosalie: Well, it was all certainly quite exciting, if I can say that. It felt good to be useful after. Returning home to normal business was a bit anti-climactic. But I wouldn't want to have that be a daily occurrence, for certain.

Juno: As someone with a bit more experience with similar situations, even on campaign it's far from a daily occurrence. What's the quote? 'Long stretches of boredom punctuated by moments of extreme terror'? Something like that.

Rosalie: nods

It was definitely novel to operate on instinct, rather than deliberation.

Juno: You handled yourself quite well, I thought. Perhaps you should make more of a habit it of it.

Rosalie: Operate on instinct?

Juno: nods.

Juno: Let yourself, ah, trust yourself. Oof, I think I bungled that, but I think you know what I mean.

Rosalie: pauses and gains a soft smile, blushing a little

In that case... would you like to go riding or come to tea at my home, sometime soon?

Juno: pauses, looking surprised for a moment, before blushing herself and returning the smile.

Juno: I...would like that very much. Either, or both, really. I'm only a fair rider, but I do enjoy it, and tea is always nice.

Rosalie: looks relieved

Excellent. You are welcome any time, of course, but how does tomorrow sound?

Juno: That sounds great. We're busy at the war office at the moment, but I can make time.

Juno: I'll be looking forward to it.

Rosalie: Me too. grins

Victorina and Chitara Plan for the Expo

Victorina: Victorina has a full tea ready for when Chitara shows up. There's also a table covered with scattered papers.

Chitara: grins at Victorina as she arrives

It's good to have time to sit down and chat with you over tea again

Victorina: She returns the grin. "Yes. This tea is made from Ebemar leaves. I think we should offer local treats at the expo." Victorina starts sorting through the paperwork. "I know I have a list of potential exhibits here somewhere..."

Chitara: "Oh, yes, we've got several Akhasic chefs coming in to run the kitchens for the event.. And you are a saint for finding Ebemari tea, we brought some but no one else here seems to understand the difference." She pours herself a cup of tea with obvious delight.

Victorina: Victorina sniffs, "Fools. What thoughts do you have for the expo?"

Chitara: "We've invited every local artisan and shopkeep we can find who's from Ebemar originally, and we've invited some to come over from the city for the expo as well. I don't know all the specifics of who and what they'll have"

Victorina: Victorina finds a large blank sheet of paper and grabs a charcoal stick. "At least we can start sketching where we want to place things. I'm thinking we leave a large area in the middle empty for demonstrations."

Chitara: "Oh, can I show you what I had in mind? I think you'll like it."

Victorina: "Go right ahead."

Victorina: "What about the drakes? Do we want to risk having some live ones or an in-depth informational booth?"

Chitara: "Oh, hmmmm." She taps her nose with the charcoal as she thinks, leaving a black smudge. "We hadn't decided what to do with the gardens, we could have some out there? Maybe even let people ride them around a bit?"

Victorina: "I think riding might be too much for guests. It'd be safer if trained riders shows them that it can be done. How many people here know how to properly ride a drake?"

Chitara: "Hm. Most of us in the delegation, really. It's not as complicated as it seems"

Victorina: "Hm. I still have my concerns. I don't want anyone to get hurt, you understand. And if there's alcohol involved..."

Chitara: "I suppose I see your point." She sketches the garden off to the side, with a couple drakes in a 'small' (for drakes) paddock. "Maybe some drakes on the other side of a fence and someone knowledgeable to tell visitors about them?"

Victorina: "Sounds like a good idea to me."

Chitara: "Excellent. That's very doable. Provided they can get the drakes through the portal."

Chitara Takes Sebastien for a Ride

Chitara: Will show up in riding clothes at the agreed upon time, looking around curiously as she's led in

Sebastien: Will have been waiting for her, also dressed very comfortably in elegant riding clothes, and smiles broadly when she is shown in

Sebastien: Chitara my dear, how lovely! A very good morning to you ^-^

Chitara: And good morning to you as well! How are you, darling?

Sebastien: Extremely well, and now much better, of course! Now remind me, you know how I am with these things - have you much experience with horses?

Sebastien: I thought, if not, perhaps we can restrict ourselves to the park, which is pleasant enough, but otherwise we could head out of the city somewhat

Chitara: As it happens, while we don't ride many horses back home I do have some experience with them from a friend who breeds horses back home.

grins

I'd love to head out of the city and see the sights

Sebastien: Oh that's fantastic then! My sister has agreed to lend you her mare, Primrose, she's quite a genial thing, and will treat you well. Shall we then? We'll have to get out of the city first, of course, but I know all the best paths.

Chitara: I'm sure Primrose will be lovely, I'll have to thank her. Lead the way to the stables?

Sebastien: can do so, chattering a b it as he goes. When we arrive, the grooms already have the horses ready for us - both are pure black, though ones is a little larger and looks a little more spirited, while the smaller one is calmer

Chitara: I'm guessing the smaller one is for me? smiles and steps over to the horse to introduce herself

Sebastien: So here we are!

Sebastien: Will lead you over to the calmer looking one

Chitara: She's absolutely lovely

Sebastien: You'll have to tell Rosie that ^-^ DO you need a hand up?

Chitara: Chitara swings up into the saddle with a smirk

Not that I mind the help, but sometimes it's more fun to show off

Sebastien: _grins broadly_Oh wonderful, absolutely! Now, Primrose knows to follow my lead - just let me know if you have any trouble with her.

Sebastien: will mount up on Ace, handling the spirited animal with confidence and experience, and lead us off. as promised, he does know some shortcuts down the mountain and out of the city, though you think he might be picking ones that are a little less challenging than he might otherwise

Chitara: can't decide whether or not to call Seb out on it, so just enjoys the trip for the moment. She does seem to be much better on a horse than 'my friend raises them' might have implied on its own

Sebastien: YOu really are quite comfortable in the saddle! I should have suspected! ^-^

Chitara: Oh, I have a wide variety of talents that were mostly useless in Ebemar. laughs

Sebastien: Well Ill do my best to see they are appreciated here ^-^ But who did teach you to ride, then?

Chitara: Oh, it was the friend I mentioned. We just... grew up together, is all.

Sebastien: nodsOh, fair enough! Well, now that we're out of the city, what would you care to do? There are some nice places around, so nice views of the city from afar, some pleasant little places to rest, or there's also some nicely challenging places to ride

Chitara: Why don't we check out one of the more complicated trails, then find a place to rest and enjoy the view?

Sebastien: Lovely! I know just the place ^-^

Chitara: Sounds perfect! Don't hold back on my account this time, yeah?

Sebastien: We can head down the coast, and then have a little lunch. And no, now I know etter, no holding back at all!

Sebastien: will spur Ace onwards, living up to the comment and leading Chitara on a fun and challenging ride through some of the coastal scenery, until we finally come to a little stand of pines on a promontory overlooking the ocean

Chitara: Chitara has a blast with it, and will totally even try to race Seb on a more level part of the trail. When they reach the overlook, though, she immediately approaches the edge to stare out at the gorgeous view

Holy crap, you weren't kidding about the view

Sebastien: Well I am known for my eye for beauty, after all!

Sebastien: Will dismout and offer you a hand also, just to be gallant

Chitara: will take Seb's hand to dismount in a flirtatious manner

I'll have to come out here with my painter's kit at some point, it'd be practically a crime not to capture this

Sebastien: Oh yes, I'd love to see that! And you can see the city there up on the hill if you look down the coast too - I think it looks quite pretty from a distance

Chitara: She turns to look, looking absolutely delighted

Oh, damn. Beautiful, private, fun to get to? This might be my new favorite place.

Sebastien: I'm quite fond! I know a few other ways of getting out here, but we definitely took the most fun ^-^

Sebastien: Now, I believe I asked to have a few little things packed up for us....

Chitara: kisses Seb happily while she's still semi-in his arms from dismounting

Oh?

Sebastien: Oh well, no rush, no rush....

Sebastien: is quite happy for a little kissing and whatnot first ;)

Sebastien: can pull away though to get said things out, including a blanket and a basket that contains all the things one mighht need for a fancy picnic, icluding chilled wine, glasses, and various food. Picnic basket of hlding ;)

Chitara: Will help set up the picnic, taking the opportunity to steal bites of a couple things as she does

This all looks excellent!

Sebastien: yes, quite wonderful!

Sebastien: Will settle down to lounge on the blanket, patting the space next to him invitingly

Sebastien: Now then, shall we enjoy ourselves properly? 😏
