Prologue

Welcome, acolytes! Here at Nemnosti, we take very seriously the idea of inquiry into areas where other ulajette might discourage the same. More than one strange idea has been offered over the years. Coming, as you do, from lineages and communities where that may not always have been the case, it can be exhilarating to realize the freedom one has here, of course within limits set by the Alabaster Lady. And so, from time to time, someone at the ulajeta gives a great public speech, an Oration, where they speak to the whole community on a matter of interest to them. Of course, not everyone comes to these - in fact, more than one acolyte has used one as an opportunity for foolishness. I trust we will have none of that! Today you are going to have the opportunity to hear Voice Kailas, one of our wisest priests here at the temple, talk to you on a matter of great importance. Although it is Khurar and the weather is likely to be warm, there is always the risk of spring rain and so it will take place in the great Atrium here in Carver's Hall. Come now, acolytes, and let us hear what he has to say.

Voice Kailas is a respected Voice in his middle years, a genealogist and expert on family relationships. He speaks with authority, at much greater length than can be presented here, on matters of national censuses and land rolls and other such matters. But the essence is simple: The Hypothesis of Dwindling, by Kailas Nemni. Afterwards, the audience response is mixed. Some nod wisely, a few seem very perturbed, especially among the Voices, and many, especially the youth, seem completely baffled.

Izu talks to Voice Kailas about his controversial hypothesis of Dwindling

[NemnostiGM] Izu, after Voice Kailas gives his oration, he's not exactly swarmed with supporters, and there are enough frowning faces that he mainly retreats back from Carver's Hall to the temple, where you can find him, a few hours later.

  • Izu will approach him when he seems to be free.

[Izu] Master Kailas?

  • Kailas is puttering around the temple, randomly straightening things.

[Kailas] Hmm? Ohh, Izu, hello. [Kailas] How did you, err, like my oration? [Izu] I thought it was very interesting, if somewhat concerning. It must have taken a good deal of research to find and confirm a pattern of this kind. [Izu] I commend your dedication to the truth. [Kailas] It is hard, after so many years of research, to let it out into the world like that. [Kailas] Ten years, really, off and on.

  • Izu nods.

[Izu] Have any of your researches hinted at a cause? [Kailas] That remains mysterious. [Kailas] One suggestion has been that we have not been as diligent, in some of the smaller communities, with the derdis ritual. [Kailas] But I do not believe that. [NemnostiGM] (that's the ritual where you wait to see if someone is going to turn into a saint) [Izu] That alone would not account for such a change, I think. [Kailas] Exactly! And there is no reason to think that we are sloppier than in the past. In fact, perhaps we are more careful. [Izu] Perhaps there is some quality of a person which leads to sainthood. An unknown variable that is waining beyond our notice.

  • Kailas smiles wryly.

[Kailas] Now *that* *is* heretical. But perhaps not wrong. [Izu] Is it so heretical? Surely we cannot see all variables of a person. The unfolding works in many ways we do not see. [Kailas] That is certainly true. [Kailas] But it is exactly on that front that my private critics have found fault with me. [Kailas] They say that I am claiming to predict the future, to know how Unfolding works. [Kailas] To speak beyond my authority on matters that are mysterious. [Izu] To say that the sun will rise is to predict the future, but if the evidence suggests it to be so, then we are foolish to believe it will be night forever.

  • Kailas laughs.

[Kailas] I should write that down.

  • Izu smiles.

[Izu] You spoke of the turning of seasons. Is it possible that this is merely the natural ebb and flow of the unfolding? That the number of saints will begin to rise again after a period? [Kailas] It is a possibility. [Kailas] It has also been suggested that what is local to Khutu need not be true elsewhere. That perhaps there are regional undulations that we do not know about, that occur in particular areas. [Izu] In your studies, has the rate of dwindling been increasing? Decreasing? Is it constant? [Izu] That is a possibility, though that suggests other questions as to why. [Kailas] It's not easy to say, but it appears to be constant. [Izu] Very strange. [Kailas] Voice Imas is very upset with me, I'm afraid. [Kailas] He has his own strange ideas, which I could not possibly summarize simply. [Izu] As you say, this does not affect our faith, or our knowledge of the kinds. [Izu] Except insomuch as it may increase our understanding of their inner workings. [Kailas] Some will say that without saints, we will have no longer any reason to believe. And that Kinds ought not to be able to disappear. [Kailas] I do not share this pessimistic view. [Izu] That is a house without a foundation. The unfolding does not care a white what wwe believe it "Ought" to do. [Izu] (whit)

  • Kailas smiles.

[Kailas] You have given me much reason to smile, my father's father's father's mother's brother's son's son's daughter's son's son.

  • Izu laughs.

[Izu] Your knowledge of genealogy is truly astounding. Though, in truth, I would not know if you were simply making that up. [Kailas] You are welcome to look it up. And I trust that you know that I would not do such a thing.

  • Izu smiles.

[Izu] Regardless, I just wanted you to know that at least one voice appreciates your research. [Izu] I hope we have a chance to speak more often in the future. This has been very enlightening.

  • Kailas beams.

[Kailas] Thank you, Izu. That gives me enormous comfort.

Jevai talks to Bura Hazh about justice in the case of her brother Pughan

[NemnostiGM] Jevai, in the aftermath of last week's brutal beating up in Akapa Sogo, things are obviously tense in your family, and of course especially with Pughan. [NemnostiGM] For the moment, the lineage is keeping, or trying to keep, him in the iftibal, where he will be safe from retribution and, it should not be left unsaid, to prevent him from doing anything else stupid.

  • Jevai bets he's loving that

[NemnostiGM] The question of how to deal with this has been left to Bura of the Hazh. While Bura's duties are mainly at Nemnosti, of course, she is the most powerful and renowned reckoner in Akapa Sogo. You're glad in a way that it's her, but also wary, given her personality. [NemnostiGM] Bura comes to you at Nemnosti one afternoon, a stern look on her face, as always.

  • Jevai has been keeping herself busy with work and research (and boring lectures)

[Jevai] Good afternoon Bura. [Bura] Jevai.

  • Jevai has been expecting her, really

[Bura] How is he? [Jevai] ...Pughan? [Bura] Yes, of course. [Jevai] Restless and angry. [Jevai] Resentful. [Bura] Echu will be fine. Your intervention helped. [Jevai] I'm glad. [Bura] You understand that he would have killed him, though. [Jevai] yes [Bura] Are you able to go uphill for a few days, spend time with your lineage, your parents? [Jevai] :| [Jevai] Are they going to need my company? [Bura] They might.

  • Jevai sighs, and nods

[Bura] I am being called upon to deliver justice. [Jevai] I can make time [Bura] It is a tense time. I do not know of anyone who says outright that Pughan did a good thing. But there are many who have heard the things said about the Pekais and understand him. [Jevai] He's... not capable of being rational, anymore

  • Bura pauses, then nods.

[Bura] Perhaps that is so. [Bura] I don't want to give you false hope. This is a serious matter, made worse by the fact that it's not the first time he's acted aggressively. [Jevai] I understand [Bura] If he is banished from the town, stripped of his lineage ... he will be vulnerable. [Bura] And a steep fine imposed on the Nadenigh does not solve the problem, although it might give some restitution. [Jevai] I understand [Jevai] It's not simple. I don't envy you. [Bura] Hestur, I am coming to you today, knowing that he is your brother, but also knowing your involvement with this Surgu business. [Bura] I am not a kind woman, Jevai. I have seen too much ill. I am ill-tempered, and sometimes sharp of voice. But I am not a monster. And so I ask your counsel in this. [Bura] Be frank. [Jevai] :| [Jevai] Must I? [Bura] I can't make you. [Bura] But a reckoner among us does not simply look up punishments in a book, like they do in Onighus. [Jevai] He's my brother. I love him. But I'm not blind. And I don't know how to...

  • Jevai stops short of saying 'control him,' though she almost does

[Jevai] guide him on a path he would stick to [Bura] It may not be realistic to do so. [Jevai] :| [Bura] I should be clear that I am not asking you to choose.

  • Jevai nods

[Bura] I am asking for your guidance, knowing your brother better than I do. [Jevai] If he stays in Akapa Sogo, he will be dangerous to others. If he leaves... he'll still be dangerous. [Jevai] And vulnerable, too, as you say. [Bura] Exactly. [Jevai] I feel our murderer woudl revel to hear this convsrsation. [Bura] Yes, exactly. [Jevai] Is there... somewhere he could be sent? ro someone who coud be trysted to take him for... trainig or... something. [Jevai] I don't know. [Jevai] Some kind of task he coudl be set to that woudl direct his energies, somehow... [Bura] Hmmm, I don't know what that would be.

  • Jevai tries to think of somethig that might work

[Jevai] If there was something like that... I will think, I know where isn't much time [Jevai] But... if he has a choice, to stay and atone and improve, or to leave and tke his chances, maybe that would be ...better [Bura] You mean to say that I might ask him to choose? That seems imprudent. [Jevai] Between two outcomes? [Bura] Hmmm.

  • Bura is considering something.

[Bura] Well. Thank you for your thoughts. [Bura] I will have an answer soon. But you should speak to your parents, also. They will need you. [Jevai] Thank you.

Marga talks to Bem Pekai about Bem’s dad getting beaten up and Momuzai breaking up with her

[NemnostiGM] Marga, both Meze, in charge of the Hunt, and Rubo, in charge of the stoneguards, have been running lots of drills, more than usual. [NemnostiGM] You get it, people are scared, but it does mean a lot more early mornings than usual. Drills, followed by three or four hours of scouting, followed by more drills. [Marga] Love to keep busy! :) [NemnostiGM] Today it's an hour or more before dawn, and you are out doing runs around the ulajeta with the stoneguard and your friend, Bem Pekai. [NemnostiGM] You heard, of course, about what happened up in Akapa Sogo to her dad. So she's understandably pretty distracted today. Not keeping up well.

  • Bem stops, out of breath.

[Bem] I'm sorry. I'm weak today. My stomach is gone. [Marga] Well, it's like the song says, we all got our bad days. [Marga] It's okay.

  • Bem pauses ... thinking about what to say next. She opens her mouth and then closes it.

[Marga] What? [Bem] How do you get along with your family?

  • Bem says, which was not the question you expected.

[Marga] Uh. Fine! :))) [Marga] I mean, which ones? But fine. [Bem] Oh. That's good.

  • Marga smilse a little too much

[Marga] (smiles) [Marga] Why d'you ask? [Bem] Well, uhh ... you heard about my dad? [Marga] Yeah... [Bem] I haven't talked to him since Romokh last year.

  • Marga nods.

[Bem] (that would be something like 9 months) [Marga] a while, huh. [Bem] I'm not good with people. And especially not with those people.

  • Marga nods.

[Marga] Are they just... really different from you? Or is there another reason? [Bem] It's my grandmother. I haven't talked to her since, well, the accident. [Marga] The accident? [Bem] Well ... when I died. [Marga] Oh. [Marga] Is she uh... does she have a problem with it?

  • Bem nods quietly.

[Bem] Yeah. [Marga] Ohhhh... [Bem] And dad, he doesn't ... well, he does what grandmother tells him to do. [Marga] furrows her brow with sympathy. [Marga] Man that's... that's a lot of feelings for you huh :( [Bem] Do you think I should talk to Jevai? [Bem] I mean, I don't know what I would say. [Bem] Sorry your brother beat up my asshole dad? [Marga] Jevai has some ... feelings about her brother too [Marga] She might say the same thing in reverse to you, I bet... [Bem] Yeah. You're still pretty friendly with her right? [Bem] After ... well, you were together. [Marga] Oh yeah! It was weird for a while, but we're good friends now. :) [Marga] You know, maybe you *should* talk to her. It's such a messed up situation for both of you.

  • Bem breaks down crying.

[Bem] (you have NO idea what just happened) [Marga] Oh ... oh no... I'm sorry! [Marga] Did I say something wrong? Do you want a hug?

  • Bem sobs.

[Bem] He broke up with me last night. [Marga] Oh nooo... Bem, I'm so sorry...

  • Marga is going to hug her unless she really seems averse.
  • Bem seems ok with it. She's stone cold, of course, not sure how many revenants you've ever hugged.

[Marga] Do you want me to beat him up? [Bem] No ... no. [Bem] He said it was 'time'. What does that even mean? [Marga] Ugh, what a dick. [Marga] I don't know hon :( I don't have the best track record with relationships.

  • Bem has stopped sobbing, at least.

[Marga] That's so much for you all at once... [Bem] I don't have any family ... I just ... I can't handle this. I try to remember the Captain, Until Feet Fail, all that ... and then I fail. [Marga] Hey, you're not alone though, okay?

  • Marga says earnestly.

[Marga] I'm not the smartest but... I can always listen. [Marga] And drink.

  • Bem nods.

[Marga] If that helps too ;) [Bem] Yeah. Maybe not right now though ... I have to go to bed, it's almost dawn. But maybe tonight? And you can help me find a newer, better boyfriend. [Marga] You know who's good at finding boyfriends? Alai. Want me to drag her out? [Marga] Or if you're not up to more folks, I'm happy for it to be just us :) [Bem] Sure, I mean, I don't know her very well. But if you wanted, yeah. [Marga] Alright, sounds like a plan... We'll come get you!

Izu and Antezheva Teresu definitely do not overhear and then see Nemnu cranking it

[NemnostiGM] Izu, amidst all the weird theological drama, you have more important jobs to take care of. Nemnu needs your care and love and attention every day. [NemnostiGM] Today you are in the garment closet alongside The Lady's tailor, Antezheva Teresu, picking out old garments for her to spruce up a bit, and then get back into the rotation.

  • Antezheva is looking at some long dresses with a critical eye.

[Antezheva] No, no, no ... this one maybe?

  • Antezheva holds up a green one that you haven't seen her wear.

[Izu] That one is nice. I have not seen The Lady wear it. [Antezheva] Not for many, many years. [Antezheva] We can ask her.

  • Izu nods.

[Antezheva] And what about this one? [Izu] Mmm... to busy, I think. The patterns are very intricate. [Antezheva] You're right, of course. This one?

  • Antezheva pulls out a very old-fashioned dress, practically looks like it could be from the Imperial period, but is definitely of new manufacture, with silver threading and a belt.

[Izu] I think she would like that, but we will need to be careful with accesories. The style is very specific. [Izu] I'm sure she has some appropriate pieces that will go nicely. [Antezheva] All right.

  • Antezheva adds it to the pile.

[NemnostiGM] (can I get you to make a Perception check) [Izu] !roll 1d20+14

  • Lan-werk rolls for Izu: [ 1d20+14 ] getting [ 9 ] which, after the modifier [ 14 ] totals [ 23 ].

[NemnostiGM] You hear a strange noise on the other side of the closet wall. (The closet is more like a giant wardrobe space, imagine.) It's some kind of yell?

  • Izu raises an eyebrow.

[Izu] Did you hear that? [Antezheva] Hear what? [Izu] (What's behind the closet wall?) [NemnostiGM] Behind the wall is Nemnu's chambers - you're not sure exactly which room lines up exactly right with this closet, but it's definitely in her private apartment-style area. [Izu] Someone yelling... from The Lady's chambers.

  • Izu rushes out to the hallway to see if there is a cause for the noise.

[NemnostiGM] You don't see anyone or anything amiss in the hallway. [Izu] (Is The Lady in a meeting with someone?) [Antezheva] Are you sure? [NemnostiGM] She's definitely not supposed to be. [Izu] Best to check. [Izu] (How bad would it be for me to check on Nemnu in her private rooms?) [NemnostiGM] It's definitely permissible for you to do that - not an everyday thing, of course, but you are a Voice and a Nemni, and it's part of your job.

  • Izu will go ahead and enter her chambers then.
  • Antezheva follows behind you.

[Izu] My Lady? [NemnostiGM] OK, give me another Perception check. [Izu] !roll 1d20+14

  • Lan-werk rolls for Izu: [ 1d20+14 ] getting [ 7 ] which, after the modifier [ 14 ] totals [ 21 ].

[NemnostiGM] Another loud shout or groan, from behind the door to your left. You can't place the voice though - maybe a woman?

  • Izu will try the door.

[Izu] Who's there? [NemnostiGM] The door opens. You see something that you will not be able to unsee. [NemnostiGM] You see Veruve Nemni ... or you see the Vessel ... on the bed, pleasuring herself/Herself (?). [Izu] D:

  • Izu closes the door faster than should be humanly possible.

[Antezheva] Was that ... was that ... [Izu] No [Izu] Leave [Izu] Now

  • Antezheva doesn't argue.

[Izu] Ancestors help us... [Antezheva] What do we do?

  • Antezheva says from the safety of the hallway.

[Izu] I... have no idea. The courses did not cover this eventuality. [Antezheva] She surely heard your voice. You said 'who's there'. [Izu] Fuck [Izu] Maybe... maybe she is testing us... somehow... [Antezheva] Why would She do that? [Izu] I have no idea. [Izu] I don't know. [Izu] No, that's stupid. [Izu] We just... pretend it didn't happen. [Antezheva] All right. Yes. Good. And never speak of it again. [Izu] Never. [Antezheva] I am not good with secrets, Izu. [Izu] Antezheva, this is the lady's business. Whatever we may think, we do not know what we saw, or why. I charge you by the remains of all of your ancestors... by your love for Nemnu... not to speak of this to anyone. [Antezheva] Yes, Voice Izu.

  • Antezheva says, with more than a little bit of a tremble in her voice.

Kuspir talks to Momuzai Nemni after his breakup with Bem

[NemnostiGM] Kuspir, it doesn't take too long for you to hear that Momuzai and Bem have broken up. Officially, of course, this is none of your business. Unofficially ...? Well, you had been meaning to talk to Momuzai.

  • Kuspir will suck up his annoyance and go talk to the hengi's son.

[NemnostiGM] You can find Momuzai without too much difficulty, outside the iftibal, doing some of his daily labor for the upkeep of the lineage. [Kuspir] Good day. Let me give you a hand with that.

  • Kuspir offers

[Momuzai] Oh, ahhh, thanks, but I've got it. [Momuzai] This is Nemni work. [Kuspir] Mm. [Kuspir] Very well. [Momuzai] Did, uh, you want something? [Kuspir] I heard you ended things with Bem. [Momuzai] Oh. Yeah. [Kuspir] She's not taking it very well. [Momuzai] Did she ... send you here to beat me? [Kuspir] Oh.. no, nothing like that.

  • Momuzai sort of steps back, not out of fear, but more out of caution.

[Kuspir] But I don't think she really understands why this happened. If you have some reason that she can understand, it might be ... kinder that way. [Momuzai] I don't think so. [Kuspir] You don't think there's a reason, or you don't think it would be kinder? [Momuzai] Yeah, the second one. [Kuspir] Is it that your feelings for her changed, or is there some external reason - your family, or something?

  • Momuzai doesn't say anything, but nods almost involuntarily.

[NemnostiGM] (give me Sense Motive) [Kuspir] !roll 1d20+13

  • Lan-werk rolls for Kuspir: [ 1d20+13 ] getting [ 8 ] which, after the modifier [ 13 ] totals [ 21 ].

[NemnostiGM] (you're not sure, but you think maybe he means that there's an external reason) [Kuspir] Did your father or someone make you break up with her?

  • Momuzai pauses.

[Momuzai] Something like that, yeah. I mean ... yeah. [Kuspir] But you still care for her? [Momuzai] Yeah. I mean. Dad says it's not in my best interest. [Kuspir] Not in your best interest how? [Momuzai] Uhhh ... welll ...

  • Momuzai seems uninclined to answer.

[NemnostiGM] (you can give me an Intimidation if you wish to press) [Kuspir] (do I get to add my bonus for being in my home community ;) [Kuspir] (even though I guess I'm threatening someone in my home community) [Momuzai] (sure, absolutely, you're most intimidating to them) [Kuspir] !roll 1d20+15

  • Lan-werk rolls for Kuspir: [ 1d20+15 ] getting [ 16 ] which, after the modifier [ 15 ] totals [ 31 ].

[Momuzai] It's just not in my best interest to be connected to a Hulti lineage. [Momuzai] Just when Father is looking for marriages for me. [Kuspir] ahh. [Momuzai] I know she's not, I mean, how could she be? But I mean ... don't hurt me. [Kuspir] well - you certainly have to do what you think is best. [Kuspir] . o O (this guy isn't good enough for her) [Momuzai] This isn't about what I think, Medimur. [Kuspir] Isn't it? You decided what is important to you and you chose it. At least have the self-respect to be a man and take responsibility for your own decision. [Kuspir] Have a good day.

  • Kuspir will turn around and walk away.
  • Momuzai just stands there, stunned.

Izu chats with Avrubai Dusmanis, who apparently is still interested in Alai

[NemnostiGM] Izu, you're trying not to think about all the secrets you get to keep, and trying to enjoy your dinner, when Avrubai Dusmanis comes and sits next to you. [Avrubai] Hey, Farai, how goes? [Izu] Estuki. Good to see you. [Izu] Things have been... busy. [Izu] You? [Avrubai] Good, good! I mean, things are strange around here. You heard Kailas speak? [Izu] Yes, it was fascinating. [Avrubai] Heresy, it's exciting!

  • Izu laughs.

[Izu] Hardly heresy, just observing patterns. Isn't that what the unfolding is all about? [Avrubai] Sure, I mean, I'm no priest. No judgement on Kailas! I really did think it was interesting. Reminded me of my time at the Academy at Ardukh. [Izu] Of course. I imagine the Academy was a source of much such discourse. [Avrubai] Definitely! Much more open about arguments and debates - sometimes leading to actual fighting. [Izu] Let us hope that Kaila's talk does not prodcuce any here. We have enough issues without that. [Avrubai] Yeah I don't see that happening.

  • Izu grins slightly.

[Avrubai] But you know who used to duel at the Academy? Alai. [Izu] Oh? Was she good at it? [Avrubai] Very good, or so I heard. [Izu] Then I shall refrain from insulting her. Not that I planned on it.

  • Avrubai laughs.

[Avrubai] You're pretty good friends with her, right?

  • Izu shrugs and eyes Avrubai a bit suspiciously.

[Izu] I wouldn't say that. We are acquainted, certainly. [Avrubai] I just mean ... I was wondering if you know if she's seeing anyone. [Izu] Ahhh... I was wondering what it was you were angling towards. [Avrubai] Sorry , I didn't mean to come off weird. [Izu] No, not at all. I just know that look. To answer your question, I don't know for sure. She doesn't strike me as the "Seeing" kind. I believe she may be a bit less formal than that. [Avrubai] Ooohhh, I see. [Izu] Just be careful. As you say, she is not one whos bad side you wish to get on. [Avrubai] Yeah, that's fine! I'm just, she's not an easy person to get to know. [Izu] No, I imagine not. [Izu] Have you tried asking her? [Avrubai] I did, actually. [Izu] And? [Avrubai] I suggested that we go for a swim and she suggested bringing Marga Gago along. Is that ... was that an invitation for something, do you think? You know them both. [Izu] Ah... um... I don't really know. [Avrubai] I just mean, I'm ok with that, if that's what it is, but I don't want to presume.

  • Izu blushes.

[Izu] I suppose just... go and see? [Avrubai] I guess. Any suggestions? Like, what Alai likes? [Izu] Umm... Magical... stuff? [Avrubai] Well that I've got handled. [Avrubai] Maybe not as well as her, but ... solid. [Izu] I'm not sure I'm the right person to ask. Have you tried my sister? She might have more insight. [Izu] This seems to be more her bailiwick. [Avrubai] Maybe ... I wanted to get a man's perspective. [Izu] Ah. [Izu] Well, I wish you luck in your... endeavors. [Avrubai] Thanks, I appreciate it. And, uh ... don't mention to her that I asked, if you don't mind. [Izu] Oh, of course. My lips are sealed. [Avrubai] I'm interested but I don't want her to think I'm, you know, too interested. [Izu] I know exactly what you mean. [Izu] (I don't)

Kuspir talks to his father-in-law Zaren who volunteers to help with stoneguard duties

[NemnostiGM] Kuspir, amidst your various duties, you've realized that one of the things that Ghorgimbe relies on you for most is ... paperwork. [Kuspir] D: [NemnostiGM] In theory, Rubo is literate, but in practice, he has big letters that often end up reversed. [NemnostiGM] So you're at a desk in the West Tower when you hear someone approaching ... shuffle, thud, shuffle, thud ... shuffle, thud, shuffle, thud.

  • Kuspir looks up

[NemnostiGM] You see your father in law, Zaren, walking with the aid of two stout canes, smiling down at you. [Kuspir] Ah, hello. [Zaren] Kuspir. I see they're misusing you yet again. [Kuspir] Well, someone needs to do it, I suppose. [Zaren] Well. That's what I'm here to talk to you about. [Kuspir] Oh? [Zaren] Stoneguard Kuspir, I have come to volunteer my services. In whatever capacity the Wellspring may need me, I am here to serve Her. [Kuspir] Ah... thank you. It's good of you to offer. [Zaren] As you can see, my feet, and back, need a little more help these days, but they have not failed yet. [Kuspir] Indeed not. We can certainly find something you can help with, I'm sure. [Kuspir] Do you want to help with these reports to start with? [Zaren] Absolutely I do!

  • Kuspir will pass some of that off to him, gladly.

[Kuspir] What brings you to make this offer? Are you feeling restless, too much time on your hands? [Zaren] I'll need you to get me up to speed a little bit. [Kuspir] Of course, it's no trouble. [Zaren] But yes, I just ... well, feeling old and useless, you know. And I'm not so old, you know, only 53! [Kuspir] Certainly not that old, and far from useless. [Zaren] And it's just ... did you know that we were all acolytes together? Hojon, and Voice Ingo, and Voice Kailas, and me? [Kuspir] I suppose that must be so, mustn't it. [Zaren] All the same age. And now one is the hengi, and another the high priest and ... well I don't understand half of what Kailas says most of the time, but it must be right. And me. [Kuspir] We all have a role to play. And we can't always know which may prove itself more important. [Zaren] And you know, Ifa and Izu are very busy and don't have time to visit me so much, and Naka's busy, and of course you have the children and so many jobs. So, I thought, waddle my way over here and see. [Kuspir] I'm happy to have your aid - and your company.

  • Kuspir says sincerely
  • Zaren smiles, sitting and looking over the papers.

[Zaren] This isn't too bad.

  • Kuspir nods

[Kuspir] Here, this is the delivery inventory, why don't you read it out to me and I can check that we actually received each thing.

  • Zaren will do that.

[Kuspir] It will be faster than if I had to carry the list around myself. [NemnostiGM] Until next we gather by the firelight, young acolytes ...

Kuspir talks to his daughter Irdomila about life and social drama as a new acolyte

[NemnostiGM] Kuspir, your life is quite busy at the moment, with various drills and tasks, meetings with the sentinels, all that sort of thing. Nothing has been amiss at the ulajeta, all calm from the perspective of the security of Nemnosti, although the place is understandably tense. [NemnostiGM] It's nice, then, to be able to relax this evening. After dinner, Rugu is out playing with friends in the courtyard, and Irdomila is at home with you, enjoying some time away from her early studies as an acolyte.

  • Kuspir will try to make conversation with her, see how she's doing.

[Kuspir] How are your studies going? [Irdomila] Fine. Boring. [Kuspir] Mm...are there no parts you enjoy? [Irdomila] There's this new girl from Ashnabis, her name is Winta, and she already uses fos. Like, I think they give it to them when they're little kids, just to practice, there.

  • Kuspir frowns slightly

[Kuspir] I doubt that. [Kuspir] But ... you are getting older now, and I know this is something you want to pursue. [Irdomila] I want to be the best. [Kuspir] I have faith that you can be, if you apply yourself and try hard.

  • Irdomila nods.

[Irdomila] Grandmother says I'm a natural. [Kuspir] Your grandmother might not be an unbiased observer. Anything that you want to do well will take work, even if you have a gift for it. [Irdomila] Daaaad, I know ... blah blah blah, work hard, until feet fail ...

  • Kuspir smiles slightly.

[Kuspir] I know, I've said these things many times. [Kuspir] I just want to make sure that you understand that magic will not solve every problem. You'll still have to do the boring parts of the lessons even if you start to use it. [Irdomila] Yeah. [Irdomila] Oh, also, Lovosa Halunemni is a giant gallcunt. [Kuspir] oh? [Kuspir] language

  • Kuspir adds belatedly

[Irdomila] I don't mean to question Her judgment, but seriously. [Kuspir] Is she behaving badly? [Irdomila] She thinks she knows how things ought to be here. [Irdomila] Just full of opinions. [Kuspir] Ah... Maybe it's difficult for her to be here. She might not feel like she is going to be liked or respected here, and is making up for it by being loud and opinionated. [Irdomila] She could make up for it by being less of a colossal bitch. [Irdomila] Mother's letter said I should be patient and get to know her. But she just calls me an 'osper', as if she knows what that word really means. [Kuspir] She could just be rude, too, I don't know. But I know it is hard for anyone to come from away to study here, leaving behind their family and things they know, and people deal with that in different ways. Maybe you will find that with time, she is less difficult. [Irdomila] She's always hanging around Rembes. [Kuspir] Oh, is that so? Well, it's good for her to make friends, surely.

  • Irdomila shoots you an inscrutable Look.

[Kuspir] No? [Irdomila] No, Dad. [Kuspir] Why not? [Irdomila] Never mind. [NemnostiGM] (i'll let you make a SM if you wish) [Kuspir] (32) [NemnostiGM] (you definitely think that maybe this is a situation with two young ladies and a handsome young gentleman)

  • Kuspir tries not to visibly sigh at teenager drama.

[Kuspir] Let me say this, then. I know you are not a little child anymore, and you want to take more steps on your path in life. If you are still doing well in your studies and there is no other trouble, then in three months, you can start to use fos. [Irdomila] I'm ready now. [Kuspir] I know, but I'm not.

  • Kuspir says, rather gently
  • Irdomila looks like she is about to offer a retort, then thinks better of it.

[Irdomila] Mother's letter said I must be patient with that, too. [Kuspir] Well, your mother is wise, you should listen to her.

  • Irdomila nods.

[Irdomila] Yes, Dad. [Kuspir] Now, go call your brother in so that he can get washed up before you have to head back, I'm sure he's probably filthy by now. I don't want anyone to say my children are not presentable in good company.

  • Kuspir says with a faint smile.
  • Irdomila smiles.

[Irdomila] Sure.

  • Irdomila goes off to grab Rugu from whatever dunghill he's playing in.

Jevai visits home and talks to her father about what will happen to Pughan, and their family tensions

[NemnostiGM] Jevai, you manage to make some time to head up through your tunnels and up to Akapa Sogo to visit your family. The Nadenigh iftibal is of course a bit of a grim place right now.

  • Jevai will look for her parents

[NemnostiGM] Pughan is being kept away from basically everyone right now, although you know your parents have been into see him. But right now it is probably more important that you go to see your parents. [NemnostiGM] They live, not in the iftibal itself, but in an aboveground house nearby, at your mother's insistence. [NemnostiGM] The house is, if anything, more welcoming and delightful and cozy than when you were a girl here, probably because now that your dad has the bees, there are more flowers and such planted in the gardens.

  • Jevai can presumably just go in, but will call out as she does

[Jevai] Mom? Dad? [Porfo] In here!

  • Porfo is having a mug of beer.

[Jevai] Hi. Got any more of that? [Porfo] Of course!

  • Porfo pours you one from a pitcher.

[Jevai] thanks [Jevai] Where's mom? [Porfo] You know, bees are bees, but the beska is good too. [Porfo] She's out with friends. She's been spending some time in the community. [Porfo] You know ... she doesn't want to be in Nadenigh spaces just right now. [Jevai] :| [Jevai] how is she? [Porfo] She's upset, of course. She blames herself. [Jevai] :/ [Jevai] and you?

  • Porfo shrugs.

[Porfo] Dijur and I have talked, several times.

  • Jevai nods

[Jevai] how has that gone? [Porfo] There have been talks with the Pekai. They are in a strange position right now. [Jevai] how so? [Porfo] Well, everyone knows that they are right, but this Hulti business casts a pall over it all. [Porfo] I mean, I don't think they're real Hulti. But it's not like people just made that up.

  • Jevai nods

[Jevai] hmm.

  • Jevai drinks her beer

[Porfo] Yeah.

  • Porfo drinks his beer.

[Jevai] I don't know how to help anyone right now :( [Porfo] They're talking about banishment. We are, I mean. [Porfo] The Nadenigh.

  • Jevai nods

[Porfo] He hasn't had it easy. Even before he died, it wasn't easy.

  • Jevai listens (partly because I'm not sure if jevai knows what he means)

[Porfo] I should have been better with him. [Jevai] How do you mean? [Porfo] Nothing. [Jevai] Is it? [Porfo] It's better this way. To leave things unsaid, rather than to bring them out now, when it's all falling apart, Jevai. [Porfo] I don't want to cause any more harm.

  • Jevai looks at him a moment

[Jevai] Nor do I, then.

  • Jevai wonders if she should have come home or not :(
  • Porfo sits quietly, but you can see his hand that holds his beska mug is clenched tight, and maybe even trembles a bit.

[Porfo] I'm sorry, daughter. I truly am. [Jevai] For what? [Porfo] You've been put in the middle of all this.

  • Jevai puts a hand on his arm

[Jevai] I'm okay. I'll be okay. [NemnostiGM] (you can give me a SM if you wish) [Jevai] (24) [NemnostiGM] (right now, your dad is more angry than sad) [Jevai] (at who? The lineage?) [NemnostiGM] (that's harder to say) [Jevai] Dad? [Porfo] Yes? [Jevai] ...you say I'm being put in the middle of this but - if it concerns my family, isn't that where I belong? [Porfo] You're right, of course, and I know you're a grown woman, but ... there are some things that are just more private. [Porfo] So I'll ask you not to ask, and to respect your mother's and my privacy. [Jevai] Okay. [Jevai] How are the bees, then? [Porfo] Oh, they're fantastic! Let me tell you!

  • Porfo can go on for as long as you care to listen about his bees.
  • Jevai will listen, and be sure totell him that the girls loved the honeyed beska beer, etc

Marga goes out to visit the encampment of Bache Tokanai and learns about Gunuremai’s movements

[NemnostiGM] Marga, today Meze has given you a very particular task as part of your role in the Hunt. Instead of heading up into the Ghengom, you're going to go downriver, to where Bache Tokanai makes their camp. [Marga] (why for?) [NemnostiGM] This isn't that unusual - it's part of the job of the vultures here at Nemnosti to look out for any signs of trouble. And while Cascade certainly leaves Nemnosti well enough alone, they are a good source of information on things going on, like weird masked people. And sending you usually makes sense, because you know they're friendly with your dad. [NemnostiGM] And frankly, you know that Meze finds them to be a little distasteful and weird, which is probably the real reason she's not doing it herself.

  • Marga is happy to help :)

[NemnostiGM] Bache normally makes their camp across the river from Naftusa, in the rough low hills. The land is broken and fragmented, but it's easy going for a vulture such as yourself travelling alone. [NemnostiGM] (I'll have you make a Survival to find them easily) [Marga] (21) [NemnostiGM] It's really not too difficult. Honestly they probably saw you coming, but you're a familiar face and you definitely know that coming alone, rather than with a bunch of your friends who would be strangers to them, is the right call.

  • Bache comes out to greet you. They're surrounded by around a half-dozen of their people, who seem vaguely interested but not alarmed at your presence.
  • Marga waves cheerfully
  • Bache is wearing flowing green skirts covered with broad fringes and a belt bedecked with copper and brass fefri tokens.

[Bache] Welcome back, sister! [Bache] Ladies, gentlemen, you remember Marga of the Gago. Be polite, now, we're in the presence of a chieftain's daughter and a saint's friend.

  • Marga laughs.

[Marga] Sure, that's me! [Marga] How goes it? [Bache] Well. Here, have some fos.

  • Bache hands you a brick of what you assume is fos, wrapped in paper.

[Marga] (is this normal?) [NemnostiGM] (it's not that weird, they're brigands, they share their plunder and you leave them alone. Think of it as a friendly bribe.) [Marga] Thanks!

  • Marga tucks it into her pack.

[Bache] So what brings you down this way? [Marga] Well, I'm sure you heard about the guy who got killed... [Bache] Wha ... ohhh, you mean Surgu? [Bache] Yeah, we heard about that. But it wasn't me! [Marga] Yeah, him. [Marga] Yeah, we know :sw [Marga] But people are hoping you or your people might have seen something that would help us figure out who it was [Marga] Anything different, like unusual people sneaking around with dead bodies, or wearing weird masks, I dunno. [Bache] You think the mask lady is related? [Marga] Wait, what mask lady are *you* talking about? [Bache] The lady with the red and black mask? [Bache] Kind of shaped like a raindrop? [Marga] You ... you know who that is?? [Bache] Oh, Ancestors, no, not who it is. But we saw her. [Marga] The person who killed Surgu was wearing a mask like that. O_o [Bache] Oh, wow! [Marga] Where was this? And when? :o [Bache] Umm, let's think. A couple weeks ago, for sure. [Marga] (would that be before, after, or around the time of the murder) [Marga] (or body dump) [Bache] (probably after) [Marga] (after murder but before or after the dump?)

  • Marga thinks.

[Bache] ('a couple weeks' is a little vague to be sure - but probably after the dump) [Marga] Definitely after he was killed... probably after they left him at the stone... [Marga] So they're still hanging around... [Marga] Where was this? What was she doing? [Marga] (do I know if there are any shoror in Bache's merry band?) [Bache] (there surely are - vulture brigands do not have a top-notch life expectancy) [Bache] She crossed the Khujai river, heading east into the Turtu. She was trying not to be seen from the road, and she definitely succeeded there. [Bache] But she wouldn't have thought to look for us up here.

  • Marga nods.

[Marga] I have to get this back to Meze... thank you. [Marga] Listen... you should watch out for any of the shoror with you. They're saying these people could be targeting them. [Marga] Folk've been throwing around the H word

  • Bache sighs skeptically.

[Bache] They always say that, though, when some random bad thing happens. [Bache] She means 'Hulti'.

  • Bache explains to the illiterate brigands.

[Marga] I mean, maybe... but a guy is dead and someone went to a lot of trouble to make sure he was gonna stay that way. [Bache] Iiiinteresting. [Bache] Well then it *definitely* wasn't me. But you think it was this lady in the mask? [Marga] They killed him up by Hong Sogo and kept his body for like... two weeks before they laid him out. [Marga] Someone wearing a mask like that, anyway... [Marga] The voices asked him I guess. [Bache] So there could be multiple people in masks maybe? Like a swarm of them? [Marga] I dunno about swarms. He only saw the one. And there was only one hunting him as far as any tracks can tell, and only one when they left him. [Marga] There could be more than one though. [Bache] Well if it's just the one, she's probably still in the Turtu somewhere. In there, it would be easy to find a place to hide away. Not like the Ghengom, all big and open.

  • Marga nods.

[Marga] This is gonna be really helpful. [Marga] If your folks see her again, or y'know... something similarly weird, would you be able to send some kind of word to us? [Bache] For you? Of course! [Marga] You're the BEST.

  • Marga grins widely.

[Bache] And you'll mention what a good ally I am, right? [Marga] Of course! [Bache] Wonderful! And you'll stay for dinner? [Marga] :D [Marga] How could I say no? :D [Bache] You can't, and you won't! You will dine as our friend and guest.

  • Marga is happy to stay :)

Ifa and Alai identify and dispel the enchantment on Desam’s memory to get more information about Gunuremai’s appearance

[NemnostiGM] Ifa, you have brought Desam from the corpseborn town of Bemneskoma to Nemnosti, where your hope is that perhaps Alai can help restore his memory of his encounter with the strange figure who you assume is "Gunuremai". [NemnostiGM] Desam has been staying in the quarters that the ulajeta sets aside for corpseborn, which are next to / part of the stables along the cloister's south wall.

  • Desam doesn't seem to be complaining, at least (yet)
  • Ifa will have wasted no time in finding Alai and asking for help.
  • Alai shows up in a green Altala, with a red and yellow leaf patterns on the loose fitting skirt and a tight bodice. Her hair is up held in place by two bone and brass pins. The usual silver headband is worn, as well as an assortment of brass, bone, and copper bracelets. A dyed cord belt at her waste has a small well crafted leather pouch.

[Alai] Is this, are you Desam?

  • Desam is a young man, maybe mid-twenties at most, and is dressed in the patchwork clothing typical of local corpseborn.

[Desam] I am, yes. And you are Alai?

  • Ifa tries to look encouraging.
  • Desam keeps a respectful distance from you, but is a little more comfortable being close to Ifa.

[Alai] I am. I have heard of what happened to you, and the fog in your head. [Desam] It doesn't make any sense. It's like I can't make a coherent memory out of it. [Desam] The person's face, their name, anything. [Ifa] I thought this would fall under your area of expertise. [Alai] First I will see if any enchantments or other magics still remain on you.

  • Alai nods to Ifa

[Desam] They were friendly, they bought me a drink, and I think they asked me about my ... Surgu. [Alai] If they uses some poison or drug to obscure your memory, this could be more difficult... I shall see.

  • Alai will start with greater detect magic

[Alai] !roll 1d20+11

  • Lan-werk rolls for Alai: [ 1d20+11 ] getting [ 13 ] which, after the modifier [ 11 ] totals [ 24 ].

[NemnostiGM] OK, after a few rounds you can detect that there is a faint enchantment. [Alai] (can I attempt to identify the effect?) [NemnostiGM] (sure) [NemnostiGM] (make your K:arcana) [Alai] !roll 1d20+13

  • Lan-werk rolls for Alai: [ 1d20+13 ] getting [ 12 ] which, after the modifier [ 13 ] totals [ 25 ].

[NemnostiGM] There are several spells that affect the memory. To your recollection though, only one really makes sense in this context, which is Anonymous Interaction. [Alai] I see problem. You are enchanted to forget details of your conversation. [Desam] Yes, that's right. Or really, the person. I remember they asked me about Surgu. That I'm sure of. But the rest ... it's all a haze. [Ifa] Can we do anything about it? [Alai] Depends on strenght of person who placed enchantment. [Alai] I can try and dispell... may work may not.

  • Ifa nods.

[Alai] This should do nothing to you, if it fails, Desam. If works, great.

  • Alai will try and Dispell the magical effect on the corpseborn

[Ifa] Are you okay with Alai giving it a shot?

  • Desam nods.

[Alai] !roll 1d20+11

  • Lan-werk rolls for Alai: [ 1d20+11 ] getting [ 12 ] which, after the modifier [ 11 ] totals [ 23 ].
  • Ifa gives him an encouraging smile and tries to stay out of Alai's way.

[Alai] (cast it well... now for the hard roll) [NemnostiGM] (yeah ... not an easy one) [Alai] !roll 1d20+4

  • Lan-werk rolls for Alai: [ 1d20+4 ] getting [ 12 ] which, after the modifier [ 4 ] totals [ 16 ].

[Desam] ... was that it? [Alai] (so caster level 5...) [Desam] I don't think anything happened. [Ifa] No new details coming to you? [Desam] Sorry. [Ifa] It was always a possibility. [Ifa] (to Alai) Anything else to try? [Alai] I was doubtful it would work... the one we are dealing with is at least skilled.

  • Ifa nods.

[Ifa] I think we all assumed that was the case. [Alai] I know a magic that will restore the memories, regardless of the skill of the caster, but is tricky [Ifa] Tricky how? [Alai] risky better word. [Ifa] Okay, then, how risky? [Ifa] Is this a 'pee your pants' situation, or a 'likely death' scenario? [Alai] Very unlikely to result in death. I am quite skilled. [Ifa] I don't doubt your skill, Alai, I just worry. [Alai] Risk is mostly mine, so we shall do this.

  • Alai sits down in front of Desam.

[Alai] Please don't move away, my arms are short. I will need to touch you at the end to finish spell.

  • Ifa frowns, but behind Alai where she can't see.

[Desam] Are you ... all right with that? With touching me? [Alai] Channeling source like this, sure universe will forgive me. [Alai] Others?

  • Alai shrugs
  • Alai spends the next 30 seconds consuming Fos.

[Ifa] I'm sure it will be fine. [Alai] I concentrate for 10 minutes or so... just amuse self and stay close.

  • Alai starts to focus the mystical energies for her spell

[Alai] (we just skipping time until I roll?) [NemnostiGM] (sure, go ahead and roll) [Alai] !roll 1d20+11

  • Lan-werk rolls for Alai: [ 1d20+11 ] getting [ 12 ] which, after the modifier [ 11 ] totals [ 23 ].

[NemnostiGM] You touch Desam, and the energy courses through you and into him.

  • Desam 's head rolls back and he seems stunned for a moment.

[Desam] I ... yes. Yes, I remember her. [Alai] please elaborate

  • Alai stands and dusts herself off

[Ifa] (quietly) Maybe I should have asked Izu to come sketch...

  • Alai steps back and stumbles slightly, worn from the magic used.
  • Ifa moves to steady Alai.

[Ifa] (q) Are you alright? [Desam] A woman of middle years. A hard face. Deep cheekbones, a large nose. Dark hair, although she was wearing a headscarf. [Desam] Her voice was low, gentle. Full of depth. [Alai] (q) I be fine

  • Alai still uses Ifa to steady herself

[Ifa] (I'm assuming that's not specific enough for us to really place anything?) [NemnostiGM] (it could be a lot of people, yeah) [NemnostiGM] (but the spell doesn't give him any particular ability to convey what she looked like) [Desam] I would recognize her again if I saw her, I think. [Ifa] Do you remember what you spoke about more fully? [Ifa] (Right, I figured, just thought I'd ask.) [Desam] Honestly, it was a short conversation. She bought me a drink, we talked about absent fathers, I told her - perhaps more than I would have ordinarily. Could she have used some other magic on me to make me talkative? [Desam] I wouldn't normally have just told a friendly stranger about Surgu.

  • Alai will pull away from Ifa

[NemnostiGM] (Alai, you don't even need to roll to know that yes, there are all kinds of minor magics, and major ones, to make people friendly and talkative) [NemnostiGM] (but of course whatever spell that was has long since gone away)

  • Ifa nods.

[Alai] I can link our minds so you can show me what you remember, at least the most important part. [Ifa] I'm sure that's true, Desam. This is not on you. [Desam] All ... right. If there's no risk. [Alai] and yes, magic could have made you more maliable. [Alai] It will be you who decides what to show, not I. [Alai] No risk.

  • Alai will cast share memory

[Alai] !roll 1d10+11

  • Lan-werk rolls for Alai: [ 1d10+11 ] getting [ 7 ] which, after the modifier [ 11 ] totals [ 18 ].

[Alai] (I get 1 minute of what he wants to show me) [NemnostiGM] Recognizing that the memory is going to be vague, you see a woman talking to Desam, asking about his parents, and Desam telling her. She looks roughly like this: https://rocksfall.org/wiki/File:Gunuremai.JPG [Alai] (no recognition I assume) [NemnostiGM] (I'll let you roll Linguistics to see if you can tell anything from her voice) [Alai] !roll 1d20+12

  • Lan-werk rolls for Alai: [ 1d20+12 ] getting [ 14 ] which, after the modifier [ 12 ] totals [ 26 ].

[NemnostiGM] You aren't an expert on Ombesh dialects but you think she's either from Khutu or a neighbouring country. Definitely not a place like Nulu, far to the north, or Malfan, to the south. [Desam] I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help. [Alai] whoever our foe is, their accent is Khutu, not Nulu or Malfan. [Alai] You have been of great aid.

  • Desam smiles.

[Desam] This unclean spirit thanks you for your kind words, Alai.

  • Alai turns to Ifa.

[Ifa] Thank you for your help, Desam. [Ifa] I hope we can bring Surgu some justice. [Alai] I can share the image with Izu when I have rested... assuming they were not in disguise for that meeting.

  • Ifa nods to Alai.

[Ifa] This is more than we had, so good job all around.

  • Alai nods

[Ifa] Let's get you some rest, and not take up any more of Desam's time. Desam, be sure you find me before you leave; I can send you back with some supplies and things if you like. [Desam] Thank you, Hand Ifa.

  • Ifa smiles.

Alai talks to Voice Imas about the structure of old Hulti temples, and realizes that Surgu’s kill site may have been at one

[NemnostiGM] Alai, in your research, you have been looking into the history of the Hulti, their shamans, and their temples. After talking with Pavavi he had recommended that you talk to Voice Imas about Hulti temples specifically, so you make your way over to the Voice temple to seek him out. [NemnostiGM] You don't know Imas well - he's not really someone you interacted with a lot during your training here, but what you do know of him is that he's considered one of the smartest people at the ulajeta, and an expert on architecture, nicknamed 'The Trowel'.

  • Alai is wearing a cream coloured Altala for the meeting, flowing with a shallow neckline. She has her bone choker on, her silver headband, and variety of bracelets. Her hair is down, split two tails, contained in a pair of bone rings.
  • Alai will ask around to find Voice Imas.
  • Imas is not too hard to find - he's in the temple, inspecting some columns for straightness and any signs of wear.

[Alai] Voice Imas. I was hoping to have discussion with you, if you have time. [Imas] Is this about that nonsense that Kailas has been spouting?

  • Imas says, sounding put out by the interruption.

[Alai] (do I have any idea what he is talking about?) [NemnostiGM] (yes, you probably heard about, if you didn't attend, Voice Kailas expressing his hypothesis of Dwindling) [Alai] No, I was looking to tap your expertise in architecture, specifically Hulti temple architecture... we can discuss the Dwindling if you wish first, but its not something that interests me. [Imas] Thank the Ancestors! [Imas] Temples, you say? What can I help you with?

  • Imas perks up, all of a sudden.

[Alai] I need to better understand the appearances of temples that were local to this area. Features, constructions. The more specific the better. [Imas] Ahh, well, that is of course, a complicated issue.

  • Imas smiles.

[Imas] But complicated questions are among the most rewarding. [Imas] The Old Folk do not, today, build temples the way they used to. [Imas] And many of the old temples, from centuries ago before the various Purges, are now in ruins, or are even totally destroyed. [Imas] For obvious reasons. [Alai] all very true statements. [Imas] Even in Malfan, where many of the Hulti went after we, ahh ... got rid of them ... their practices are no longer what they once were. [Imas] It is almost as if, since our having hunted them down, they do not do things in a way that draws attention to themselves as Hulti.

  • Imas recounts with a grim smile ... but definitely a bit of a smile.

[Alai] I've heard rumors of an abandoned temple in Gil Hargush. I intend to try and find it, but I need to understand what I am looking for. [Imas] That would be interesting, if true. I can't rule that out. In the great forest of Musune, and the area around Gil Hargush, that is not an easily accessible area. [Imas] Come with me, I will find the book I am thinking of.

  • Alai follows, arms behind her back.
  • Imas leads you along into the library portion of the temple.
  • Imas stops at a door.

[Imas] Now, you cannot come in here, for here is where texts that are restricted are kept. But let me get it and bring it out.

  • Imas heads in and you can see a small, windowless library inside, but then he ducks in and closes the door behind him.
  • Imas returns a few minutes later with a very old volume.

[Imas] Here, look.

  • Alai rolls her eyes, and fidgets while trying to wait patiently, smiling at any other Voice who walks by.
  • Alai will peer at the text
  • Imas lays the book down on a nearby table and flips through to an image.

[NemnostiGM] The image depicts a flat-topped hill - or perhaps an artificial hill - made of earthen terraces. The terraces are connected to one another by a set of staircases that spiral around the terraces, until finally, at the top, is a stone building. [Imas] That is a Hulti temple from eastern Khutu, along the Sea of Gusu, from around six hundred years ago.

  • Alai looks at the image.

[Alai] Is the number of terraces significant? [Imas] Unclear. [Imas] It's not entirely clear whether the hill itself is part of the temple or just the place where the temple was built. The terraces are clearly artificial, but not broad, like those used for agriculture. [Imas] It is almost like a step-pyramid built of earth, flat on top, with a temple building. [Alai] spiraling stairs. Is this common to other examples? [Imas] Again, unclear. [Imas] But obviously one needs some way to get up from the ground to the top, since the terraces are not easily scalable. [Imas] Whether some have a single staircase on one side, whereas others have multiple staircases like this one, I cannot say. [Alai] I have seen similar features before, in much aged condition. [Imas] Really? Where? [Alai] Gil Hargush

  • Alai has a frustrated look to her

[Imas] That is astonishing if so. A Hulti ruin in that area would need to be ... hundreds of years old at least. [Imas] The great fort at Gil Hargush has been abandoned for over three hundred and fifty years. [Imas] And Hulti would have been rare in Khutu, even then [Alai] Well at least my search has been short... unless there is another temple. Longer investigation might be required. [Alai] Does your history of architecture identify any defences to these temples? Structurally or otherwise? [Imas] I have wondered whether this kind of terracing served some kind of defensive purpose. [Alai] or used to house tunnels or chambers underneath. [Imas] Having multiple staircases, spiralling up the terraces, instead of one, could be for defense. Or perhaps for some other symbolic purpose. Spirals do have symbolic meaning, often. [Alai] very true [Imas] As for chambers or tunnels, I do suspect that there would have been some, in at least some temples. [Alai] Well I will be returning to the one I found in Gil Hargush to see exactly that, if any have survived ravages of time, or snake nesting. [Imas] Perhaps we could write a paper, if you are interested. I know we don't know each other well, but I know that the Lady has spoken highly of you in the past. [Alai] Yes, in the past. [Alai] I will bring sketches of what I find. [Alai] You can help fill in details that I may miss. [Imas] I would be pleased to do so.

  • Imas smiles thinly.
  • Alai nods and will part, arms behind her back.

Ifa meets with Hojon Nemni and Pomirabe Sortusai, who begin contracting a marriage between Hojon’s son Momuzai and his mistress Afra Sortusai

[NemnostiGM] Ifa, you are of course busy with your regular duties most days. Last night, though, you got a message from the hengi, Hojon Osper Nemni himself, asking you to attend a private meeting with him this morning, to discuss a confidential family matter. [NemnostiGM] You have not been given any further information. [NemnostiGM] The Nemni iftibal is, of course, the eastern wing of the great cloister building, and is where most of the Nemni live as well as where lineage business takes place. Hojon's greathall is only a small portion of the great structure, but is laid out in the size and shape of a traditional Khutuan longhouse, just inside a much larger building. [Ifa] (Am I supposed to meet him in the greathall, then?) [NemnostiGM] (yup)

  • Ifa will head there, then.

[Ifa] (Is anyone about?) [NemnostiGM] The room is empty aside from you, Hojon himself, and another man who it takes you a second to recognize. It is Pomirabe Sortusai, known to the Lady as Elof, and currently appointed from the sentinels in Naftusa to help in the defense of the temple. He's good friends with Kuspir and was an acolyte at the same time as him. Today, though, he's dressed in the fine garb of a Khutuan nobleman of high status. [Hojon] My young niece, Hand Ifa, thank you for coming to attend on me this morning. You know Pomirabe of the Sortusai? [Ifa] (I'm assuming I do at least somewhat?) [Hojon] (yes, at least casually, you'd know almost anyone who was an acolyte and spent some time here) [Ifa] (Okay, yeah, that's what I thought.) [Pomirabe] A pleasure, Hand Ifa, to see you once more. [Hojon] (and of course now he's living here for the time, sentinelling) [Ifa] And you as well, [title] Pomirabe. We are all grateful for your protection. [Pomirabe] I am glad to be able to serve the Lady once more, even if only for a short time. [Ifa] Let us hope. How can I be of service today? [Hojon] The reason I have called you here today, Hand Ifa, is a matter of some confidence for the moment, until the arrangements can be made. [Ifa] Of course, you have my utmost discretion. [Hojon] Pomirabe is here on behalf of his uncle, the hengi Samirgeze Sortusai, in order contract a marriage, or at least, to begin to do so.

  • Pomirabe shuffles from one foot to another.

[Ifa] Oh, splendid. Who are the intended? [Hojon] We wish to begin discussions about contracting a marriage between my son Momuzai, and Afra of the Sortusai.

  • Ifa manages not to betray any particular reaction.

[Hojon] (how's your Bluff?) [Ifa] (Oh, fair point. I rolled a Will save for myself, but my Bluff is +9. Just a sec.) [Ifa] !roll 1d20+9

  • Lan-werk rolls for Ifa: [ 1d20+9 ] getting [ 19 ] which, after the modifier [ 9 ] totals [ 28 ].

[Hojon] (fair enough) [Ifa] I see. Have the proposed spouses discussed this, or will that come later? [Hojon] That will come later. [Hojon] It is felt that it is important, for the time being, not to cause undue concern until an arrangement is reached.

  • Ifa nods.

[Hojon] I have, of course, from time to time, discussed with Momuzai the likelihood that I would seek him out a wife. [Hojon] He will not be surprised by that fact, although, well, he may be surprised by the details.

  • Pomirabe nods.

[Hojon] (give me a SM please?) [Ifa] !roll 1d20+9

  • Lan-werk rolls for Ifa: [ 1d20+9 ] getting [ 4 ] which, after the modifier [ 9 ] totals [ 13 ].

[Hojon] (yeah no) [Ifa] As you say, Uncle. [Pomirabe] I am pleased to bring greetings from my august uncle, and to indicate our interest in this union. [Pomirabe] We await your offer with eagerness, Osper.

  • Hojon nods.

[Hojon] Before we discuss financial matters, there is an ... issue, to discuss. [Ifa] It is good to know the ties between our families remain so close.

  • Ifa looks at Hojon and waits for him to continue.

[Hojon] As you are surely aware, Afra is with child. We will assert Momuzai's paternity of the child, and with it, the Nemni lineage should the child wish it, to be considered a lawful heir.

  • Pomirabe pauses.

[Pomirabe] As you say, Osper. I will convey your interest to my kinfolk. [Ifa] (Can I try a SM on Pomirabe for that?) [Hojon] (ok) [Ifa] !roll 1d20+9

  • Lan-werk rolls for Ifa: [ 1d20+9 ] getting [ 8 ] which, after the modifier [ 9 ] totals [ 17 ].

[Hojon] (not really sure - he's being extremely formal) [Ifa] (*nod*) [Hojon] It is of course expectable that your noble kin should be compensated for her labour and her continued presence here at Nemnosti. [Hojon] We offer one thousand gold horns. [Ifa] (How does that rank as an offer?) [Hojon] (honestly, it's a little low)

  • Pomirabe frowns.
  • Ifa frowns for the first time in this meeting.

[Pomirabe] Worthy hengi, respecting your authority in this your greathall, I would encourage you to rethink. Afra is much beloved of my uncle. [Pomirabe] And, we note, her proven fertility might be appealing to a husband we might contract for her in Onighus.

  • Hojon pauses.

[Hojon] Surely, though, we would want to respect and honour her many years of service to the Lady here, which would of course continue should she marry here. I would not want to ask her to leave this, her happy home.

  • Pomirabe frowns again.

[Ifa] As I'm sure Afra would not want to leave, but her service must, of course, be rewarded, and the Sortusai compensated for the loss of such a *valued* family member.

  • Hojon scowls, perhaps at you.

[Hojon] Hand Ifa Nemni, thank you for reminding me of that. [Hojon] (you will not have missed his intentional use of your lineage name) [Ifa] I am here to serve my family and community. [Pomirabe] Rather, perhaps you think that my venerable uncle considers her to be less valuable on the marriage market, now that she will bear a .. Nemni child. [Hojon] (you're pretty sure Pomirabe paused there before the word Nemni. Almost sure. But it was subtle) [Ifa] (*nod*) [Hojon] I will consult my treasury. Perhaps some additional gifts of jewels to be lavished upon Afra for her use. [Pomirabe] Osper. Hojon. I had hoped not to raise this matter. [Ifa] [Title] Pomirabe, surely you know how beloved Afra is by *everyone* here. You can rest assured people here have her best interests at heart, just as you and the rest of her family do.

  • Pomirabe nods.

[Pomirabe] Just so, Hand Ifa. [Pomirabe] But I would be remiss if I did not note that not all Sortusai are treated with such kindness here. Faruzh, for one, my own grandfather. [Hojon] (I actually will have you make a K:local or K:nobility on that one, Ifa, to know what he's talking about) [Ifa] (Okie doke, same roll either way.) [Ifa] !roll 1d20+10

  • Lan-werk rolls for Ifa: [ 1d20+10 ] getting [ 9 ] which, after the modifier [ 10 ] totals [ 19 ].

[Hojon] (you recall that Faruzh Sortusai died last year, and was rendered bubun here at Nemnosti. You were not really sure of the circumstances though.) [Hojon] That is none of my business. That is Hand business, and Sortusai business, perhaps. [Pomirabe] Nonetheless, some might perceive it an insult. The Nemni cannot stand apart from their own Lady. [Hojon] My understanding is that that decision was made not by the Lady, nor indeed by the Hand. [Pomirabe] My cousin Ghorgimbe, I am confident , gave the appropriate consent. Whether she ought to have done so, it is not my place to say. [Ifa] (Would I know anything about *that*? Because that sounds unusual.) [Hojon] (Sure. You know that Faruzh's wife, Zali Dendorfi, sometimes known as Zali Nemni, made some sort of arrangement after her husband died, to have him rendered bubun. But that decision could only be made by a lineage member, which in this case, was the stoneguard Ghorgimbe Sortusai. You suspect there's more than that, but Hand Jesa would know more details.) [Ifa] (Cool) [Hojon] None of this is my concern. None of this has the least to do with my lineage. [Ifa] Perhaps we can return to the matter at hand.

  • Ifa tries to look reassuring to Pomirabe.

[Pomirabe] Yes, fine.

  • Pomirabe seems very frustrated, but is holding it together.

[Ifa] Even if we're unable to reach a particular agreement at the moment, hopefully [title] Pomirabe can convey to his uncle our lineage's great interest in a match. [Pomirabe] I will of course do so. And too, I wish to convey my august uncle's similar desire. [Pomirabe] We are not, I think, so far from concord. [Pomirabe] I would urge you to consider carefully the various issues at hand, and to construct an offer that we can readily accept.

  • Hojon nods.

[Hojon] I respect your uncle, and your noble lineage, greatly, and I will do so. [Hojon] Allow me to consult with my treasurer, and we will see what can be done. [Pomirabe] Thank you, Osper. [Pomirabe] Then may I suggest that we are done for today? [Ifa] (to Pomirabe) Thank you for your respectful consideration. [Hojon] Thank you, and we will talk soon. Ifa, stay.

  • Hojon doesn't even say Hand Ifa this time.
  • Ifa nods politely.
  • Pomirabe departs.

[Hojon] Well, I thought that went well.

  • Ifa refrains from asking which part.

[Ifa] Uncle, if you will enlighten me as to your intentions with this enterprise, I believe I could better serve you and our family. [Hojon] Well, Momuzai needs to get married, that much is evident. Having cleared some obvious obstacles, the choice of partner is one that will benefit all. [Ifa] I think that depends. [Hojon] Afra will have the opportunity to stay here, which is what she wishes. Momuzai will have his noble and beautiful wife. The Sortusai will have been rewarded with bridewealth. We have room to improve the offer substantially. [Ifa] Has Momuzai indicated he wanted a noble and beautiful wife? [Hojon] Momuzai understands his obligation to take a suitable wife. That she is noble is desirable, and that she is beautiful will not have escaped him. [Ifa] Ah, 'suitable'. An important word here. [Ifa] Whom do you intend to be hengi after you? [Hojon] That is very presumptuous of you, niece. [Ifa] It is both important and pertinent. [Ifa] And my interest is solely that of one serving the family. [Ifa] I cannot serve you if I am unclear as to your intent. [Hojon] My intent is to marry my son to my mistress, Hand Ifa, as you surely are aware by your impertinent questions. [Ifa] But do you intend Momuzai to succeed you?

  • Hojon considers your question, or appears to.

[Hojon] I do not.

  • Ifa nods.

[Hojon] Momuzai is a kind boy, but unsuited for the role. [Ifa] It is not for me to say, though he *is* kind. [Hojon] I will also say, though, that I am hale of body and have no intention of dying anytime soon. [Ifa] Do you care for Afra? [Hojon] I don't see what that has to do with it, but yes, of course. She's lovely. [Ifa] Do you care about her happiness? [Hojon] Naturally. [Ifa] And your son's as well? [Hojon] It is my duty. [Ifa] Then you must see that this match you are proposing would make the pair of them a laughingstock. Whatever happiness Afra finds with you, she will lose when you do eventually leave us, and she will be left to a man who *cannot* love her as a wife, and a community that will shun her. And Momuzai would forever endure asides and remarks, be the butt of jokes, himself forced to find happiness elsewhere as well. [Ifa] What you are offering is cruel, and unworthy of you, our lineage, and our Lady's service.

  • Hojon stares at you.
  • Ifa stares back.

[Hojon] I knew your branch was not entirely devoid of gall. [Ifa] As I am sure your kidneys have not failed you. [Hojon] But she cannot stay here without a marriage. And I, unfortunately, am not in a position to divorce. [Ifa] Momuzai is not the only man here. [Hojon] But he is the only one whose children will resemble the one now growing in Afra's belly. [Ifa] Hengi, with respect, everyone already knows whose child Afra bears. [Hojon] I will not pretend that you are wrong. [Hojon] But also, who else here has the wealth to pay for such a noble beauty? You yourself know that my offer was well low. My final offer will not be. [Hojon] And if not me, then she will certainly not be staying here. Where, as we both know, she wishes to remain. [Hojon] I see in your eyes, niece, that you think me monstrous. But rest assured that I am trying here, to help Afra, in the best way I can. [Ifa] If you wish her to stay, as I do, and she does, you will need to help pay regardless of who marries her. [Ifa] I do not think you monstrous, and we are both trying to help Afra. [Ifa] I'm just trying to tell you your plan would not have done so, in any long-term sense. [Ifa] We can find someone who will not mind whose child she has, and is happy to have her remain here, I'm sure. [Hojon] Momuzai is a good boy. He will not mind. [Ifa] Perhaps not now, and I'm sure he would do his duty. [Ifa] But it is a bad idea in the long term. [Ifa] He will not thank you for it in the future. [Hojon] Perhaps if I promised him to succeed me? Not that that is a promise I can make alone. [Hojon] I would need the wise Nemni who follow to decide such a thing. [Ifa] Certainly this is not a decision that must be made today. [Hojon] Ifa ... I know you care for her still. [Hojon] I am not a fool. [Ifa] I won't deny it, but I *also* care for Momuzai, and you, and our lineage. [Ifa] And this match is bad for all of the above. [Ifa] Please let me talk to them, at the very least. [Hojon] To whom? [Ifa] Momuzai and Afra. Perhaps, if they're dedicated to the match, they can weather the problems it would cause. [Ifa] But they would need to know ahead of time. [Hojon] Absolutely not. I forbid it. [Ifa] That would indicate to me that you understand they would disapprove. [Hojon] I understand that Momuzai has recently ended a relationship ,and is not in a condition to be reasonable. [Hojon] And Afra is heavily with child. [Ifa] (Did I know Bem and Momuzai broke up?) [Hojon] (hmmm ... let's say yes) [Ifa] Have you spoken to anyone else about your plan? Ajemika, maybe? [Hojon] I have not. But if you wish my permission to speak to her, you have it. [Hojon] You Nemni ladies have great strength and wisdom, and I depend on your counsel - even when I am disagreeable. [Ifa] Thank you, hengi. You honor us. [Hojon] Very well. That will be all.

  • Ifa nods her head momentarily and will see herself out.

Jevai visits her mom at the Igriz iftibal, and learns that Pughan’s father is Lijun Ararta, and how his second death came about

[NemnostiGM] Jevai, ever since you talked to your dad, things in your mind have gone from bad to worse. You decide to go talk to your mom to see if you can get some clarity. [Jevai] (I mean partly I just want to see how she is doing, this isn't all about me you know :x)

  • Jevai will try and figure out where she can find her if not at home or in the Nadenigh spaces -_-

[NemnostiGM] You track her down at the Igriz iftibal, which is a place you've been to as a child, but haven't spent much time in it in a long time.

  • Fusna smiles when she sees you.

[Jevai] Hi mom... [Fusna] Jevai, I was just thinking it has been too long. [Jevai] It's good to see you

  • Jevai will give her a hug
  • Fusna hugs you warmly.

[Fusna] How are things at Nemnosti? [Jevai] Well, life goes on, but things are tense.

  • Fusna nods.

[Fusna] Naka tells me a little of what's going on.

  • Jevai nods

[Jevai] I've been trying to keep occupied. [Jevai] How are you?

  • Jevai asks with genuine concern/interest

[Fusna] I'm not really sure, dear. [Fusna] I try to take comfort in the old stories, but the ones I know often end badly.

  • Jevai nods

[Fusna] Sometimes our lives are what they are, and there is no moral or tidy ending. [Jevai] Or we're just small pieces in someone else's story [Fusna] Yes, exactly. [Jevai] we can't see the whole thing [Fusna] You talked to your father. [Jevai] I did. [Fusna] That's good. [Jevai] :/ [Fusna] Ask, then. [Jevai] He said... thigs that are aheppening are between you and him. If you feel the same, I'll leave it be. [Fusna] Right now I think that we should be doing what we can to help Pughan. [Fusna] He is my son, and I will not abandon him. [Jevai] I don't know what that is. [Fusna] Neither do I. [Fusna] But the answer is not to sacrifice him, and our family's dignity, for the sake of the Nadenigh name. [Jevai] Do you think the Igriz would take him in? [Fusna] I don't know ... I don't.

  • Fusna sits down.

[Fusna] There's more to this, Jevai.

  • Fusna looks at the hard-packed earthen floor.
  • Jevai sits next to her mother

[Jevai] then tell me. [Fusna] I'm not sure I can get the words out. [Fusna] I can't lose you too. [Jevai] HOw would you lose me? [Fusna] There's something you don't know. But if you are going to be able to help ... I see that you need to know.

  • Fusna pauses, then breathes in.
  • Jevai nods and will let her take that space

[Fusna] Pughan is not your father's.

  • Jevai nods

[Jevai] in what way? [Jevai] In your heart? In his? [Fusna] When I was young, I was foolish. Perhaps I still am. [Fusna] You were small, and I was feeling lonely, and ... well ... there was another man.

  • Jevai nods

[Jevai] This is an old story [Jevai] But dad knew? At some point?

  • Fusna nods.
  • Jevai will put an arm around her mom

[Fusna] You were, what, six, seven? [Fusna] No ... even younger. [Fusna] Just little, but always so smart, so helpful. [Fusna] Let me try to explain. [Fusna] Pughan's father, his sire, is Lijun Ararta. [Fusna] When he was young, Lijun was ... wild. And lovely, and kind, but ... very wild. [Fusna] He was young, younger than me, perhaps only nineteen or twenty, when it happened. [Fusna] When Pughan was born, Lijun thought that he could ... I don't know, persuade me to leave your father? [Fusna] And so they killed him. The Nadenigh. [Fusna] It was seen as an insult to Porfo.

  • Jevai nods

[Fusna] But then he came back ... different. When Lijun was reborn, it was as if the lust fell out of his heart, all the wildness and that. [Fusna] So now I am being punished. [Fusna] All of Lijun's wildness has come into Pughan. [Jevai] Oh mom.... [Fusna] I know why the Nadenigh killed him. But I cannot forgive them. And I will not forgive them now, for abandoning Pughan, who they see as not their problem. [Jevai] Pughan's life is not your life, or Lijun's [Fusna] But yet I am his mother, and I am trapped. [Fusna] There is more. [Fusna] Pughan ... he knows. [Jevai] Of course he does. [Jevai] hoe=w did he learn?

  • Fusna sighs heavily.

[Fusna] From the vultures. [Fusna] The men of Lijun's age, they all know. [Jevai] But why would they tell him? [Fusna] Tocha of the Gago was the one who told him. [Fusna] I think he thought it was funny. [Jevai] ahh... Tocha -_- [Fusna] Lijun is a different man now - I know you must know that. But I always worried about him having some crisis of conscience. It turns out that was not something to fear. [Jevai] You've talked to him? [Jevai] about this, I mean [Fusna] He still lives here in Akapa Sogo, most of the time. We've talked, if only to agree not to talk further. [Fusna] We haven't talked about the latest, about the attack.

  • Jevai nods

[Jevai] but you feel like this all weights over Pughan's fate, thatb if it were not the case, thing would be clearer? [Fusna] None of this would have come up again at all, if not for Pughan's actions.

  • Jevai nods

[Fusna] The Nadenigh have not forgotten. Dijur was involved with the attack on Lijun. [Jevai] If you are afraid that this will weight against him in some way - you should talk to Bura, and tell her [Fusna] Bura knows. Of course she knows. [Jevai] She won't allow it to come into his judgement [Fusna] Not in the sense that she would hold his parentage against him, no. [Fusna] But in the sense that her job is to make the community whole, to keep us together. In that sense, she might? [Jevai] If Dijur was involved in that attack, if they thought wat was justice then, they justice has been passed, and its not on Pughan to bear anything further [Jevai] if the Nadenigh are willing to sacrifice him purely because they feel like, hmm, like his trouble is not their troublem after they have claimed him, that does not strengthen the community, or tie anyone together [Jevai] Does it not cause strain with the Igriz? [Fusna] The whole situation causes strain. And it is not possible to separate out my actions, and Lijun's, from what is going on now. Not entirely. [Jevai] Maybe, but there are many other things as well [Fusna] I know, dear. But it doesn't make the past go away. And this is Akapa Sogo. People do not just forget. [Fusna] Whatever happens, I think that it may be best for Pughan to leave. [Jevai] Even if it did, it would not be easy or clear.

  • Jevai nods

[Fusna] I don't want the Pekai to take vengeance on him, and without his lineage to support him, he will be even more vulnerable. [Fusna] The only thing holding the Pekai in abeyance is that they themselves are under this cloud of suspicion. [Fusna] No one believes that Echu had anything to do with it, but still. [Jevai] Well. I don't think he will want to stay.

  • Fusna nods.

[Fusna] Will he be in danger if he leaves? [Jevai] He will be in danger regardless

  • Fusna nods.

[Fusna] I'm sorry to have laid all this upon you, Jevai. [Jevai] don't be.

  • Jevai hugs her again

[Jevai] Do you want t me to talk to anyone? To Father, or Dijur... or Lijun? [Fusna] I don't know what you could say that would help. [Fusna] Not that I think you wouldn't try ... I just worry that it could make things worse. [Jevai] Alll I can think is that they killed one man already for their pride, and to keep Pughan, so what does it say of them to turn away from him for it now? But I know the past is not the only thing that is guiding them. But I wouldn't want them to be upset with you for this, either, if they think I am meddling for anyone's account other than my brother's. [Fusna] I hear you. But you have not been living with these emotions for twenty years. [Jevai] No. [Jevai] I love you, regadless, okay? [Fusna] I know you do. And I love you.

Kuspir chats with Pomirabe, who complains about being asked to contract Afra’s marriage to Momuzai

[NemnostiGM] Kuspir, you're out at the Outer Caves, doing your regular stint as the guardian there. It's quiet, mostly you wait for people to come and talk to their ancestors, and no one causes a disturbance. [NemnostiGM] As you're doing your duty, Pomirabe comes from the West Tower and down the road towards you. [Pomirabe] Oh good, you are here. They said you might be.

  • Kuspir nods in greeting to him

[Pomirabe] Care for some company? [Kuspir] It's been quiet so far. I would welcome some company. [Pomirabe] Remember when we were acolytes and we had to stand watch here overnight, and they would ensure that horrible noises came from the caves to see what we would do? And the whole time we were being watched? [Kuspir] An old classic. [Pomirabe] I miss those days so much, Medimur. [Kuspir] I think the acolytes still do that one. [Pomirabe] Some days I wish I knew so much less than I am compelled to. [Kuspir] Oh? [Pomirabe] Do you know our hengi, my uncle Samirgeze? [Kuspir] (do I?) [NemnostiGM] (you can roll k:nobility) [Kuspir] !roll 1d20

  • Lan-werk rolls for Kuspir: [ 1d20 ] getting [ 1 ].

[Kuspir] (well clearly not) [NemnostiGM] (indeed)

  • Kuspir shakes his head
  • Pomirabe picks up a stone and grunts as he hurls it out across the road, where it goes skittering down the river valley into the water.

[Pomirabe] It's a terrible thing, politics. [Pomirabe] I wish you a life free of any of it. [Kuspir] What's the problem? [Pomirabe] Of course you know I am here to serve the Lady, and to protect Her. That is absolute truth. But I am also here to represent my lineage, and my uncle's interests. [Pomirabe] He has sent me instructions to aid in contracting a marriage.

  • Pomirabe frowns.

[Kuspir] What, for your son?

  • Pomirabe shakes his head.

[Pomirabe] I wish it were so easy. [Pomirabe] Momuzai Nemni, and my cousin Afra.

  • Kuspir frowns

[Kuspir] Why?? [Pomirabe] Yes, exactly my question. [Pomirabe] The simple reason is that Hojon wishes it to happen. So I get the privilege of extracting from him the largest possible bridewealth. [Kuspir] It seems like it's bound to cause problems. [Pomirabe] Surely. Many. [Kuspir] I guess this is why Momuzai broke up with his girlfriend so suddenly.

  • Pomirabe nods.

[Pomirabe] Yes, my understanding was that there was a girlfriend in the way, but not a serious one. [Kuspir] Well... I think she thought it was serious. [Pomirabe] Ah, I see. [Pomirabe] I don't know Momuzai well - he was just a boy when we were acolytes - but I have no doubt that the eldest son of the Nemni hengi would be able to marry very well indeed. [Pomirabe] This is always the challenge with saintly marriages - the normal rules don't apply. [Kuspir] Surely, but he's also... not a strong-willed type. [Kuspir] He'll give in to his father's wishes.

  • Pomirabe nods.

[Pomirabe] He will. That much is clear. [Pomirabe] And the thing is ... well, I have reason to think that Afra will also. If what I am imagining to be the situation is correct. [Kuspir] Does it actually seem like she's in accord with this plan? [Pomirabe] She doesn't know about it, yet. [Pomirabe] But ... have you ever wondered why she came here, and more than that, why she stays? [Kuspir] I assumed she wanted to get away from home, like many young people.

  • Pomirabe nods.

[Pomirabe] You know we're broken, right? The Sortusai? [Kuspir] But I don't know her thoughts, of course. [Pomirabe] (you do not know that) [Pomirabe] (although you do have little inklings here and there, perhaps) [Pomirabe] We're just ... not right. [Kuspir] How do you mean? [Pomirabe] When Afra was small, she saw her sister fall under the gaze of a much older man ... my grandfather, Faruzh. Her ... well, some kind of great-uncle. [Pomirabe] She was not the first, nor the last. [Kuspir] Hm. So she sought to avoid that? [Pomirabe] So Afra saw Nemnosti as a place of safety ... from all that. [Pomirabe] I cannot bear this any longer, and I am sorry to weigh you down with it, my brother. [Pomirabe] But it is too much for me.

  • Pomirabe stands stoically, at guard, as you used to do twenty years ago.

[Kuspir] It's no burden to share your troubles, my friend. [Pomirabe] I do not claim to know why Afra does everything she does. But I was not surprised when she became attached to Hojon. He provides ... security, against becoming currency in our lineage's transactions. [Pomirabe] It is why Ghorgimbe came here too - and why she never married. Don't tell her I told you. She frightens me a little. [Kuspir] I would never do such a thing. [Pomirabe] But her guardian, you know, is the Lady herself. Ghorgimbe, I mean. [Kuspir] But doesn't having Afra marry the hengi's son also make her a kind of currency? You seek her bridewealth for your family's benefit. [Pomirabe] It does. But it keeps her safe. [Pomirabe] I am not saying she will be happy, exactly. [Pomirabe] Just that it is a choice that Hojon will be able to present to her that gives her the right to stay. Her children will be Nemni children. She will not be part of some strange transaction with one of the city lineages, or perhaps one from up north. [Pomirabe] And it will be ... understandable, to other suitors. They will not wonder why my uncle would choose the Nemni over them. [Kuspir] Well.. if both of the parties involved agree to the match, it isn't our place to raise an objection. If it isn't going to work out, that will surely become clear in time. [Kuspir] A bad decision is still a decision. [Pomirabe] I am just angry at all this. Angry at the part I am called to play. To sell my cousin to her lover's son, as a palatable transaction. [Kuspir] What better choice is there for her? [Kuspir] Hojon won't marry her, after all. [Pomirabe] I know. Our hengi is not ... well he is not like my grandfather Faruzh, but he is not a good man. His larynx is empty and his kidneys are weak. [Pomirabe] I am so ashamed to play this role, that is all. I do it because I do, like you, see the sick logic in it. [Pomirabe] I am right to fear that any other match he might make for Afra will be worse, perhaps far worse. [Kuspir] I understand your worries, but I don't think any would judge you for this. Anyone who thinks about it will know that there are greater factors at play, and you are only doing what you must. You could refuse but they'd just have someone else do it instead, who might be less scrupulous. [Pomirabe] I worry that doing this sort of thing, it hardens me. Turns my organs sour. That whatever ill runs through us, runs through me. [Kuspir] You wouldn't feel so troubled by it if you were like them. [Pomirabe] I used to think that if I were hengi, I would be able to end this poison inside us, to be a good leader. [Pomirabe] But perhaps in time, I will be curdled. [Kuspir] I don't think you are capable of such ill.

  • Kuspir puts a hand on his shoulder

[Pomirabe] I wish to be a good model for my son. To show him that to be a Sortusai can be a thing of pride. I just do not feel pride today.

  • Kuspir nods

[Kuspir] You can still be that for your son. [Kuspir] Have you spoken to him about this? Does he even know what's happening? [Pomirabe] With Rembes? No. [Pomirabe] He is doing as he should, learning to love this place, as I do. [Pomirabe] But it is hard to love Nemnosti on a day like today, where I was standing in the iftibal, with just that lecher Hojon and Hand Ifa. [Kuspir] Then I don't think he'll think less of you. [Pomirabe] It is hard to know that this place that I loved as a boy is sometimes no better than my own home. [Kuspir] People can be weak or selfish anywhere, unfortunately. [Pomirabe] It is not the first time I have had to know such a thing. But to be ... implicated ... it makes me feel as if I am covered in filth. [Kuspir] Once I finish my watch, let's go and have a drink, perhaps that will help a bit. [Pomirabe] That would help.

  • Pomirabe smiles.

Alai tells Kuspir what she learned about Hulti temples and Gunuremai’s appearance, and then hits on him with awkward results

  • Kuspir is getting some dinner, so you can find him there
  • Alai spots Kuspir and will approach. She is wearing a cream coloured Altala for the meeting, flowing with a shallow neckline. She has her bone choker on, her silver headband, and variety of bracelets. Her hair is down, split two tails, contained in a pair of bone rings.

[Kuspir] Ah, good evening.

  • Kuspir says politely

[Alai] Ah, Stoneguard. Good luck to run into you. I have some news to discuss.

  • Alai gives a quick smile

[Kuspir] Oh? Do you want to ... sit and talk?

  • Alai looks around the meal hall, considering.

[Alai] A walk around the grounds afterward? I wouldn't want disturb your meal. [Kuspir] It's not a problem. But if you wish, I'll join you afterwards for a walk. [Alai] I'll wait for you outside the north Carver door. Enjoy your meal.

  • Kuspir nods
  • Alai gives another quick smile and walks away, hands behind her back.
  • Kuspir will quickly eat his food, then look for Alai near the door she indicated
  • Alai is waiting, leaning against the stone wall.

[Kuspir] Hello. Hope I didn't make you wait too long.

  • Alai will move beside Kuspir and direct the walk to the left to the Statue Garden

[Alai] Not long. [Alai] Everyone learns everything here, eventually, but sometimes I like to at least make it take time. [Kuspir] What was the news you wanted to share? [Alai] A pair of items actually [Alai] I've been investigating Hulti temples... what they are, how they work, and rumors of one in Gil Hargush [Kuspir] oh? [Alai] my hope was that we may deny our foe a safe haven. [Alai] It has not worked out exactly as I had hoped. [Kuspir] So you think there was a temple at that site? [Alai] Yes, that is exactly what I think. [Alai] and there may be more to that site than we took time to realize. [Kuspir] well, we were a bit distracted at the time, I suppose. do you think we should go back there and make a more thorough investigation?

  • Alai nods

[Alai] there may be tunnels or structures underneath. The presence of that serpent lends to that thinking. [Kuspir] Hm.

  • Kuspir considers that for while in silence
  • Alai waits for Kuspir's consideration, her bracelets jingling while she walks.

[Kuspir] Do you think it impacts the current investigation? Is it maybe a location where the killer could be hiding? [Alai] My research indicates a Hulti temple is only empowered when the shaman is present to do so, and empowering a place as a temple has little to do with the location. [Alai] however, there may be personal ties to the location, which might give clues to thier identity or motivations.

  • Kuspir nods

[Kuspir] Well, if you think it would be useful, I'll trust your judgment. [Alai] It's frustrating that I didn't realize what it could have been at the time. [Kuspir] Don't beat yourself up about it. We're still in the midst of investigating, so we're bound to make some mistakes. [Alai] The faster pieces put together, the more harm prevented. Divinations gave us a lead in time, which we did not realize. [Kuspir] All it means is we have to hike back there, but we can do that. [Alai] I will remember this lesson. [Kuspir] Was there something else you wanted to talk about too? You said there were two items. [Alai] Desam

  • Kuspir nods, listening
  • Alai looks around the garden and will find a bench to sit next to a Ravre statue
  • Kuspir will sit as well.

[Alai] Ifa brought him here. I was able to examine him. There was an enchantment on him. [Kuspir] What sort of enchantment? [Alai] To conceal the identity of the person who spoke with him. It is likely they also used an enchantment or some other similar means to induce him to provide information on Surgu

  • Kuspir nods

[Kuspir] Were you able to learn anything else about them? The person, I mean. [Alai] I learned their skill with magic is not inappreciable. Removing thier enchantment proved difficult. [Kuspir] But you were able to do it? [Alai] I have knowledge of spells of significant power that can remove even those enchantments that affect the mind, even if they are not easily normally dispelled. [Kuspir] That's impressive. [Alai] Employing one of those spells, I restored Desam's memory.

  • Alai smiles

[Kuspir] Is it dangerous? I mean casting such a strong spell. [Alai] The risk was me, not Desam. I accept, and it was fully successful. [Alai] I have the memory of the woman who spoke with him, and her cadence. [Kuspir] I just know that it can be risky. I know that you are skilled, but it's only natural that I should worry a bit. [Alai] your concern is touching... there is other costs to such magics, for me, but we can discuss after. [Kuspir] My daughter wants to start using fos, but it seems so risky.... but that's not your concern, anyhow. [Alai] You are her father, it is natural to be the shield of risk for your own. Life is risk, and you cannot shield all of it. [Kuspir] No, I know. I told her if she continues to do well in her studies, then in a few months, she can begin. [Kuspir] But it's a big step. [Kuspir] Anyway... tell me what you know about the woman who spoke with him? You can describe her? [Alai] Feel fortunate that she will have that first opportunity in a safe space with help.

  • Kuspir nods

[Alai] I can do more. Do you want Desam's memory? [Kuspir] All right. [Alai] I will need you to lean forward and close your eyes... it will be easier for me.

  • Kuspir does as instructed, feeling a bit awkward
  • Alai will cast Mindlink, forging the link with a kiss on Kuspir's forhead, filling his mind with Desam's memory.

[Alai] !roll 1d20+11

  • Lan-werk rolls for Alai: [ 1d20+11 ] getting [ 11 ] which, after the modifier [ 11 ] totals [ 22 ].

[Alai] that does not preclude she was in disguise when they met.

  • Kuspir nods

[Kuspir] Thank you - that's very helpful

  • Alai whispers while they are still close
  • Kuspir straightens back up

[Alai] How are you managing through this? [Kuspir] It's a lot to consider. [Kuspir] I am trying not to let it weigh on me too much but it's difficult. [Alai] You are stoneguard, trained to be hard under such weight, but I worry. [Kuspir] You don't have to worry about me. But.. thank you. [Alai] I worry you keep thing under rock, letting the frustrations and stresses build. Eventually they will burst out... but when? [Kuspir] Life is full of frustrations. I'm old, I have a lot of practice at handling them. [Alai] You should find way to release what you are carrying... then you will control, handle it better, instead of coming out when unexpected or unwanted. [Alai] But what do I know? I am young.

  • Alai gives a sly smile and a wink
  • Kuspir blinks, looking a bit taken aback.

[Kuspir] You should find someone who can help you with... what you're looking for. There are plenty of young men around who would be quite eager I'm sure. [Alai] Do you really know what I am looking for?

  • Alai muses

[Alai] I am offering to help you. I'm not looking for anything more from you. [Kuspir] I ... I can't. I just ... I appreciate the offer, even if I don't know *why*, but I can't. [Alai] I told you why. I want to help you.

  • Alai shrugs

[Alai] Alas this is making things worse for you. [Kuspir] I'll make any necessary arrangements for us to go back to Gil Hargush.

  • Kuspir says, standing up

[Kuspir] Thank you for the information. I'll speak with you again soon. [Alai] yes, I will wait to hear from you.

  • Alai stands up
  • Kuspir will nod politely and make his escape, by which I mean walk away about as briskly as he can without running.
  • Alai watches to see if he looks back, hands behind her back
  • Kuspir does not look back but once he gets out of sight will take a few moments to compose himself before continuing at a calmer pace.

Jevai and Alai talk in the sculpture garden, where they encounter Susuva Nemni who talks about Surgu and Ailal

  • Jevai is spending some time outside somewhere quiet, maybe by the pool or in the sculpture garden
  • Alai is wandering the sculpture garden contemplating the meeting with Kuspir when she spots Jevai
  • Alai walks up to her friend, her bracelets jingling, announcing her approach.

[Alai] Jevai?

  • Jevai looks up as you approach and gives a small smile

[Jevai] Oh, hi. [Alai] May I sit? [Jevai] of course

  • Alai will settle down, legs at her side next to her friend

[Alai] Enjoying the quiet, I take. Too bad since I am here.

  • Jevai smiles again

[Jevai] I don't mind [Alai] I don't bring mead. I could magic some, but they always taste like turds. [Jevai] that's alright [Jevai] I'm sure we could find some if we wanted [Alai] if we wanted. I am fine if you are. [Alai] you doing well?

  • Jevai just sighs

[Jevai] I'm still waiing to hear what will happen to Pughan. [Alai] ugh... brothers are a bane. [Jevai] :| [Jevai] It shouldn't be like this [Alai] Nikata could be rotting in a hayloft for all I know. [Alai] No...but they are family. We love them.

  • Alai takes Jevai's hand

[Alai] and you have friend to help [NemnostiGM] (all right, can I get you both to make a Perception check please?) [Alai] !roll 1d20+6

  • Lan-werk rolls for Alai: [ 1d20+6 ] getting [ 20 ] which, after the modifier [ 6 ] totals [ 26 ].

[Jevai] (bitch you gave me tremorsemse) [Jevai] !roll 1d20+10

  • Lan-werk rolls for Jevai: [ 1d20+10 ] getting [ 16 ] which, after the modifier [ 10 ] totals [ 26 ].

[Jevai] (also we are very perceptive ladies) [Jevai] thanks

  • Jevai says, giving Alai's hand a squeeze, then looks up

[NemnostiGM] You both hear a soft singing from the other side of the sculpture garden. [NemnostiGM] Alai, you can recognize it as Susuva Nemni. [Susuva] ~In the wind, in the wind, my quill and your dander / In the breeze, in the breeze, a love letter gone~ [Alai] It's Susuva Nemni

  • Alai informs Jevai

[Jevai] hmm. I don't think I've ever heard her sing. [Alai] I can't say I have either.

  • Alai listens a little more
  • Jevai also, if only to figure out if she heard 'dander' correctly, what an odd song
  • Susuva is definitely singing to herself as she brushes away the statues of dust. Jevai, you imagine that must be the reference. It's not a song you've heard before.

[Susuva] ~In the wind, in the wind ....~

  • Susuva pauses as she sees you, and clams up.
  • Jevai gives her a slight smile

[Alai] Hello Susuva.

  • Alai waves
  • Susuva stares at the two of you as if considering coming closer.
  • Susuva comes closer, but sort of awkwardly makes it seem as if she is doing work while doing so.
  • Susuva casually brushes the statue near to you.

[Alai] You can sit if you want. [Alai] We don't mind

  • Susuva sits wordlessly.

[Jevai] What song was that? I don't think I've heard it before [Susuva] Not a song, just some nonsense. [Alai] Nice to see you in good spirits.

  • Jevai nods

[Susuva] You're helping Sister Hush, right? [Jevai] oh - yes

  • Susuva nods.
  • Susuva stares at you both uncomfortably, as if trying to process something.

[Susuva] Well. I suppose that is worthwhile. [Alai] Is there something on your mind?

  • Susuva considers the question.

[Susuva] I would imagine that it must have been very bloody, to see the body all eaten by vultures. [Jevai] It.. hmm. [Jevai] He'd been dead some time, so not as much as it could have been. [Susuva] Every death contains lessons to be learned. [Alai] I've seen bloated and dead bodies wash up on the shore since I was a child.

  • Susuva nods.
  • Jevai nods also

[Alai] but I do agree with what you say. [Susuva] Ailal learned a lot when Surgu died the first time. [Susuva] I wonder what she will learn now. [Jevai] How do you mena? [Jevai] (mean) [Susuva] I was an acolyte then, even though we are the same age, she and I. [Susuva] I was not yet a Nemni.

  • Jevai listens

[Susuva] The plague had taken so many. [Susuva] But Surgu, that was a powerful lesson. That you cannot protect those closest to you.

  • Susuva pauses.

[Jevai] :| [Susuva] They say that they are coming for all of us. Do you think so? The revenants, I mean. [Jevai] I think there is more on their agenda, but that you could well still be in danger.

  • Susuva nods nonchalantly.

[Jevai] So, take care. [Alai] These walls are well defended, but be on guard. [Jevai] I would hop you are safe here [Jevai] (hope)

  • Susuva pauses again.

[Susuva] Ailal tried to be kind to me, afterwards. To understand what was happening with her brother. [Susuva] But I am not her brother.

  • Jevai nods

[Jevai] Do you think they were close, before he died? [Jevai] the first time, I mean [Susuva] Yes, very close, I think. [Jevai] hmm. [Alai] Is sad story [Susuva] I should get back to my work.

  • Susuva stands.
  • Jevai nods, but really she's thinking less about Surgu and more about Pughan

[Jevai] yes, of course

  • Alai nods
  • Susuva returns to her cleaning.
  • Alai looks at her friend

[Alai] Is their sad story, not yours. [Jevai] it's not so different [Jevai] Pughan is still alive, for now, but we're not so close as we were, before [Alai] you live very different lives. Some distance is not unexpected. [Jevai] it's more than that. [Alai] I'm here, just let out if needed. [Jevai] Thanks. [Jevai] There's really not anything I, or anyone, can do, though. [Alai] There is nothing you would choose to do, which I understand.

  • Jevai looks at Alai

[Jevai] What is that supposed to mean? [Alai] My words may have been poorly chosen, I am sorry. [Alai] We wield the source each in our own way. [Alai] There is much we can do, that we choose not to do as that is right thing to do. [Alai] or the consequences are not worth the choice. [Jevai] This is not something that can be fixed by the Source. [Alai] I am not helping.

  • Alai looks down away from her Jevai.

[Jevai] It's alright. [Alai] I will be there, if you need me. [Jevai] Thanks.

Solos
