Prologue

[Nemnosti-GM] Good evening, my precious acolytes! It's been too long since I've had the privilege to sit with you around the firelight. On a foggy spring evening such as tonight, it is all the more comforting to share in one another's company. Reminds me of my own days as an acolyte, a long time ago.
* Limard bunches his Voice robes up around him a little, as a chill runs through him.
[Limard] And welcome today to our senior acolytes, in advance of their adventure this evening. I made them promise to keep quiet at least for now, so that the rest of you can hear clearly what I have to share. As I was falling asleep last night, just in the moment of transition from the waking world to that of dreams, I suddenly felt as if I were falling, bringing me out of my near-sleep in an instant, back to wakefulness. Many of you, I am sure, have experienced the same. It is a kind of interruption, a sudden gap or rupture in the ordinary, just at the point of leaving the realm of conscious thought. I am reminded, too, of the Courses, in which the ordinary flow of a river is interrupted by rapids, or a waterfall, or by a whirlpool.
* Limard stomps his foot on the earth, as if to make the point.
[Limard] None of us is promised a slow, steady stream. None of us can predict when we will be pulled out of our plans, and into another not of our own intention or design. And of course, eventually I fell back asleep, but it is never the same, the second time. Do you understand what I am saying? Ah, perhaps not. The pleasures of being young, that even if you know the experience I am sharing with you, the meaning of it all is hardly scrutable, without having travelled further downriver. You'll figure it out, in time. That is Her wisdom - that each of you is on your own course, wherever it may lead you, and that acquiring the knowledge of where you have been allows you better to dream of the future. Now, run along - before we lose the light entirely!

Oldoka tells Hojon that she’s not feeling well enough to join them camping

[Nemnosti-GM] Master Limard finished his lesson and eventually, the younger acolytes head off to bed. The moon is nearly full, cutting through the heavy fog as a luminescent disk in the sky whose features have been effaced.
[Nemnosti-GM] Although it's nearly summer, it's quite cool, and it's been rainy of late, so the Pardopasu is lush, that is, if you can see it.
[Nemnosti-GM] A week or so ago, Naka suggested that all of you go out camping in the Pardopasu - perhaps for the last time. Ever since Oldoka got engaged, it's been on your minds that none of you are guaranteed a life here at the ulajeta.
[Nemnosti-GM] And now, Ghorgimbe is off with her family in Naftusa, dealing with Sortusai things. And then Eng-dur showed up here a few days ago - no one is really sure what's going on with that.
[Eng-dur] hi! :D
[Nemnosti-GM] Hojon, you're sitting there, sharpening your knife by the firelight, when Oldoka comes and sits next to you.
* Hojon looks up
* Oldoka has her long dark hair up in a bun, covered by a woollen mebel decorated with a small pin that you know was given to her by Nemnu Herself upon your sister receiving the Lady's Name Elujen, at her Nameways ceremony a few months ago. She looks wan and thin.
[Oldoka] Hey.
* Oldoka has a look about her - she has something important to say.
[Hojon] What is it?
[Oldoka] I know I told Naka I would go out tonight with you. I mean ... I want to, it's just ...
* Oldoka looks down at her body.
* Zaren glances over and tries to look like he's not paying attention.
[Oldoka] She's going to be upset with me.
[Hojon] You don't feel well enough to go?
* Oldoka looks over to where Naka is sitting with Eng-dur.
[Oldoka] I'm sorry, Jon-jon.
* Hojon sighs
[Oldoka] I mean, I could try.
[Hojon] I don't want you to make things worse.
[Oldoka] But you know, Avez is supposed to be coming tomorrow for this big visit, and I need to be at my best. Whatever that means.
[Hojon] :/
[Oldoka] I need you to be nice to him.
* Hojon is disappointed but trying not to look too upset
[Hojon] I guess so.
[Oldoka] And also ... be nice to Eng-dur tonight. I know that Zaren must be pissed. But Naka wants to include him, and, well ... so do I.
[Hojon] Eng-dur is fine. He's funny, at least.
[Hojon] Why wouldn't I be nice to him?
[Hojon] Kind of a dick move to pick on a little kid :p
[Oldoka] Because maybe Zaren is not going to be nice to him? And what Zaren does, you would do.
* Hojon rolls his eyes
[Hojon] Okay, yes mom :p
[Zaren] Hey, I'm always nice.
[Oldoka] Oh ... I'm sorry, Zaren, I didn't mean for you to hear that. But ... now that you did. You also be nice.
[Zaren] Pfff...whatever. He's just a little kid. Like I care.
[Oldoka] All right, well, .... I need to tell Naka. I know she'll be disappointed.
[Oldoka] I'll talk to you tomorrow, okay?
[Hojon] Yeah. Try to rest and hopefully you'll feel better tomorrow.
* Oldoka gives Hojon a little kiss on the cheek.
* Hojon rolls his eyes slightly, mostly for show

Oldoka tells Naka and Eng-dur she’s not coming

* Oldoka goes over to where Naka is sitting with Eng-dur.
[Zaren] No kiss for me?
* Zaren says teasingly
* Hojon elbows Zaren
* Oldoka punches you on the shoulder.
* Zaren laughs
* Oldoka sits next to Naka and Eng-dur.
[Naka] Oh, hey, Oldoka. :)
[Oldoka] Hey! How did you like your first fireside chat with Master Limard, Eng-dur?
[Eng-dur] hey :)
[Oldoka] They're not always that inscrutable.
[Eng-dur] was it? I mean I do that waking up weird thing all the time
[Naka] But they're not *not* always that inscrutable.
* Oldoka giggles.
[Eng-dur] isn't the point of being an acolyte to learn how to... scrute?
[Naka] *laughs.*
[Naka] I guess that's true.
[Eng-dur] that has to be a word, right?
[Naka] Some of us scrute better than others, though.
* Oldoka considers.
[Oldoka] I guess that must be right.
[Oldoka] Well look, I have some bad news.
[Naka] ...I really hope that past tense is "scruted"...
[Naka] Huh? Oh no, what is it?
[Oldoka] I don't think I'm up to it tonight.
[Oldoka] Just ... tired.
[Naka] Awwwwwwww
[Naka] Oh, actual aww
[Oldoka] I know you must be disappointed.
[Naka] :/
[Eng-dur] wait, what are we doing tonight?
[Naka] *gives Oldoka a hug.*
[Oldoka] I don't mean to leave you out there with the boys.
[Oldoka] Ghorgimbe feels bad too, of course, but in a different way.
[Naka] I mean, I'm a little sad, but I don't want you to be feeling crappy the whole time.
* Oldoka exchanges a glance with you; you both know how much Ghorgimbe hates going home to Naftusa.
[Naka] Yeah... :/
[Naka] I'll be fine, though. Eng-dur's coming.
[Eng-dur] yeah!
[Naka] *turns to Eng-dur*
[Naka] We're going camping. :)
* Zaren frowns.
[Eng-dur] ooooh, okay!
[Oldoka] Exactly! You can go forage for mushrooms or whatever it is that you do out there, on those long nights.
[Naka] There's a lot of really good mushrooms.
[Eng-dur] well it has been pretty wet, so, maybe!
[Naka] *says earnestly.*
[Oldoka] You can teach my brother something.
[Naka] Oh, 'doka...that implies he can learn.
* Oldoka giggles.
* Eng-dur also
[Oldoka] He's not that bad.
[Naka] He's fine. :)
[Naka] But you can't let him know that. You gotta make sure he knows you're the superior sibling.
[Oldoka] He knows.
[Naka] *laughs.*
[Oldoka] All right, well, look, take care out there, and I'll see you tomorrow. You promised to teach me more weaving!
[Naka] Okay. Get some rest!
[Naka] *will give her another side hug for good measure.*
[Eng-dur] yeah - feel better!

Limard lectures Ingo, Hojon, and Zaren about self-control and being well rested for the next day’s meeting with Avez Vambachas

[Nemnosti-GM] All right, Ingo, Hojon, and Zaren. Master Limard comes up to the three of you after making sure the young acolytes have headed off after the campfire.
[Limard] Gentlemen.
[Hojon] yes, Master Limard?
* Ingo nods to him
[Zaren] Yo
[Limard] I want you to know that I am in support of your little excursion. Truly, I am.
[Zaren] But...?
[Ingo] Let him finish.
[Limard] But ... tomorrow is a big day for the Nemni clan.
[Limard] Avez Vambachas and his delegation from Omba - well, from "Sharai", are arriving tomorrow.
[Limard] We have word already from Naftusa that they have settled in there tonight at the inn.
[Hojon] Are you saying we shouldn't go?
[Limard] I'm not. Others ... maybe.
[Hojon] 'Others' could say it to our faces if they care so much.
* Hojon says, stubbornly
[Ingo] Someone does care and is saying it.
[Limard] But you have passed your Nameways, Taishukh, Vestor, Ronu. And that means something around here. You are not our property.
[Limard] Your parents, Hojon. They definitely care.
[Ingo] What are you suggesting Master Limard?
[Limard] I'm saying that whatever it is that you get up to out there, you need to get some sleep, at some point, and you need to be back here in the morning.
[Zaren] It's not like we're going to Hong Sogo or anything. We're just going camping.
[Zaren] Don't worry, we'll make sure we get back at a decent time.
[Limard] Zaren, you're completely right. That is my own position. You'll be out just on the other side of the valley.
* Hojon nods
[Hojon] We'll make sure we get back in time.
* Hojon makes no promises about sleeping
[Limard] I am simply reminding you all that this meeting tomorrow with the delegation is important. And, I don't need to stress this I'm sure, but for Oldoka especially. This illness of hers has come at a most unfortunate time.
[Hojon] well, Oldoka's not going, so she'll be fine.
[Limard] Oh? Well .. that's .... good.
* Limard does not seems sure that that is good.
[Limard] It's very important that the Vambachas not get any sense that anything is wrong.
[Ingo] They would turn their back on a tie to the Nemni that easily?
* Ingo is a little surprised
[Hojon] What, just to make sure that they don't pull out of the deal?
[Limard] We don't know much about these "Sharaians". They have their own kingdom now, but it is very new, and the sensibilities of its noble class are uncertain.
[Zaren] Man, all this politics stuff is such bull... nonsense.
[Limard] And yes, exactly, to ensure that this goes smoothly. Even if they don't pull out, the bridewealth amount is always negotiable.
[Hojon] well if they don't want to marry my sister, no one's forcing them :p they're the ones who came looking for a match.
[Ingo] Hojon, think how that would look for Oldoka.
* Limard nods in full agreement with Ingo.
[Hojon] She could do better :p
[Limard] Look, I don't need to belabor the point. You understand the stakes.
* Ingo nods
[Limard] Don't be stupid.
[Ingo] We will be back in time.
[Limard] And in one piece.
[Hojon] Yes, sir.
[Limard] Have fun.
* Limard smiles warmly at the three of you.
* Ingo smiles as well
[Zaren] Don't worry, we'll be fine. :)
[Ingo] With this two... its gonna be a challenge.

The group leaves to go camping in the Ghengom across the Pardopasu from Nemnosti

[Nemnosti-GM] All right, the five of you are left to put out the fire and then get your gear, which you've packed in advance, for your trip into the low hills of the Ghengom, across the Pardopasu from the ulajeta.
[Nemnosti-GM] (I'll assume you've all made any relevant preparations, but if you have anything special, now's the time to speak up)
* Zaren will grab his gear, making sure the bottle of moonshine he snatched is well hidden at the bottom of his bag.
[Nemnosti-GM] For light, you'll be bearing hand-held lanterns made of translucent alabaster illuminated with soft pink-yellow magical light. Definitely not enough to be seen from a great distance in the fog, but enough to give you some security.
[Naka] *will presumably have packed stuff for Eng-dur, since it sounds like he didn't know we were going?*
* Hojon is kind of grumpy as we head out
[Nemnosti-GM] (I think actually you would have told him in advance - but also, he probably is the most experienced at the wilderness of any of you, and needs far less preparation.)
[Naka] (Ah, then disregard)
[Eng-dur] (yeah I feel like he goes out all the time with otu advanced notice and probably thinks of it less liek a special even and more just like. that's how hyou do)
[Nemnosti-GM] You head up the river path to the upper ridge, where Istu Levunu looks down over all of you. Eng-dur, you know the old sigillant stone very well.
* Eng-dur pats it
[Eng-dur] hi there friend :D
[Nemnosti-GM] From there, you turn north and around the valley to the other side, and then east.
[Nemnosti-GM] Normally you'd be able to easily see all the way over to the ulajeta from here, but tonight, visibility is much too limited.
[Eng-dur] where are we going? anywhere in particular?
[Naka] (Are we?)
[Zaren] This should be fine, I think. Looks pretty flat.
[Nemnosti-GM] You hadn't made any specific plans beyond coming over to this side of the valley.
[Naka] (Does this look like a good spot? :P )
[Hojon] You just don't wanna hike any further ;p
[Ingo] (can I Spleen a good spot... better than Zaren?)
[Zaren] Oh c'mon, it's all just rocks.
[Naka] (I was also considering Spleening)
[Nemnosti-GM] Anyone who wants can Spleen a spot.

[Nemnosti-GM] Zaren, you have an intuition that you should go a little further east - it's less flat, but also more protected - there are old river valleys there too, so more fresh water.
[Nemnosti-GM] Eng-dur, you feel more than a little anxious about making a suggestion, but you don't like this spot.
[Zaren] I mean, maybe over that way a bit? Less wind, more water.
[Eng-dur] Oh, yeah, there's some good spots over that way for a group this size!
* Eng-dur says, sounding both a bit relieved and a bit grudging
[Naka] *smiles.*
[Naka] Sounds good.
* Zaren rolls his eyes.
[Naka] What? I'm agreeing with you.
[Hojon] Fine, whatever. Let's just go.
[Zaren] I didn't say anything!
[Naka] *narrows her eyes.*
[Zaren] Hey c'mon, relax, I've got a surprise for later.
* Zaren grins.
[Naka] I saw that eyeroll.
[Naka] Oh?
* Zaren puts an hand on her shoulder as they walk.
[Nemnosti-GM] All right, a short time later, you find a spot. Eng-dur and Zaren, you both think (independently) that this is a great spot.
[Nemnosti-GM] It's flat, but there's a creek running about fifty yards away, and the soil is soft enough to set up camp. Barring a freak storm, you're fine.
[Zaren] Hey kid, you think you could find us some firewood?
[Eng-dur] me?
[Eng-dur] uh, sure I guess!
[Zaren] Yeah, you're good at this stuff, right?
[Eng-dur] You wanna come?
* Eng-dur asks Naka
[Naka] Sure. There's probably some good mushrooms around here.
* Zaren freezes for a second and looks at Naka
* Zaren scowls.
[Hojon] [m] smooth move playa :p
[Zaren] Don't get lost or anything.
[Zaren] [m] Shut up.
[Naka] We'll be back in a bit with firewood and, hopefully, some more food.
[Eng-dur] yeah :D
[Naka] I think we know our way around enough to get back to camp.
[Naka] *rolls her eyes.*
[Hojon] We'll get things set up.
[Eng-dur] yeah, stay safe :V

Naka and Eng-dur go out looking for firewood and mushrooms; Eng-dur has a strange vision of a forest, follows a trail of ilurusha mushrooms and picks some

[Nemnosti-GM] All right, Naka and Eng-dur, you set out into the fog, lights in hand, to get firewood and do some foraging.
[Eng-dur] oooh night 'shrooms :V
[Naka] Yeah, maybe we can find some [specific rareish mushroom].
[Naka] *will root around for mushrooms (or any other forage, presumably).*
[Nemnosti-GM] You can search pretty readily for firewood - that's pretty easy.
[Naka] How's training going?
[Eng-dur] oh, its okay!
[Nemnosti-GM] You can make a Spleen check to look for mushrooms if you wish.
[Eng-dur] I haven't told downward I'm here though but thats' fine I'm sure

[Nemnosti-GM] All right, Eng-dur, you really want to impress these people. But it just isn't happening. You travel a bit farther afield than you had intended, so that you lose Naka's light for a brief moment.
* Eng-dur was worrying about whether mushrooms will actaully even impress them and wondering what would and got distracted
* Eng-dur looks around
[Nemnosti-GM] Naka, you've lost sight of Eng-dur too.
[Eng-dur] Naka?
[Nemnosti-GM] You can hear one another, but distantly.
[Naka] Eng-dur?
[Naka] *will try to go towards his voice.*
[Eng-dur] Over here!
[Nemnosti-GM] Eng-dur, please make a Brain check.

* Eng-dur keeps an eye out for her light, knowing it is better for one of us to stay put
[Eng-dur] You coming?
[Naka] Working on it!
[Nemnosti-GM] Eng-dur, you find yourself in a strange reverie. You find yourself walking, almost outside of your own intention. The night sky falls away, as if a curtain parting, to reveal something quite different.
[Nemnosti-GM] It's not so uncommon for you to have visions, of course. In this one, you find yourself walking through a broad forest - not so unlike the ones of the Pardopasu, but unfamiliar to you. And where you are aware that around you it is dark, in the scene, it is mid-morning.
[Nemnosti-GM] The scents of the trees and soil are overpowering. A gentle breeze is blowing from the southwest, warm and life-giving. Your liver and spleen are open as the forest's breath reaches you. You look down and see a trail of mushrooms leading you into the forest.
[Eng-dur] (are they foragable mushrooms?)
[Eng-dur] (I mean I will follow them of COURSE but I might take some if they are)
[Eng-dur] Naka.....
* Eng-dur says kind of dreamily
[Eng-dur] theres a whole other forest....
[Nemnosti-GM] They are ilurusha mushrooms, dark-grey, small clusters with conical heads. They definitely have a potent effect.
[Naka] (Can I see him?)
[Nemnosti-GM] Naka, you can't see him - although from time to time you do see his pale light flickering in the distance, to the northeast (you think) of you.
[Nemnosti-GM] Naka, make a Stomach check.
[Naka] (23)
[Naka] Eng-dur! You're walking the wrong way!
[Nemnosti-GM] You can manage to keep within a reasonable distance of him, maybe even making up some ground.

Their excursion is interrupted by an earthquake, and they stumble upon a ruined foundation below them

[Nemnosti-GM] Eng-dur, as you step ahead, you hear a low but loud punctuated noise followed by a long moaning creak, emanating from the ground beneath your feet. No more than fifty yards in front of you, you see a gaping opening in the forest, cutting through the path before you. It seems to have simply appeared out of nowhere.
[Eng-dur] oh....
* Eng-dur tosses a mushroom into it
[Eng-dur] hello?
[Naka] (Do I hear and/or see any of that?)
[Nemnosti-GM] Naka, yes, you do hear a sharp crack followed by a long creak.
[Nemnosti-GM] It is from ahead of you, near where Eng-dur's light must be.
[Naka] Eng-dur!?
[Naka] Are you okay?!
[Naka] *will start running.*
[Eng-dur] (Cna I still hear her?)
[Nemnosti-GM] All right, Naka, make a Marrow check.
[Eng-dur] (and is there anything to see in the crack?)
[Nemnosti-GM] Eng-dur, you can make a Brain again to see how deep into this thing you are.

[Naka] (10 *womp womp* )
[Nemnosti-GM] All right, Naka, you stumble and hit the ground hard, losing your breath momentarily.
[Nemnosti-GM] Eng-dur, you hear Naka's call in the distance ,behind you. Ahead of you, the smell of warm conifers is overpowering - quite different from the foliage in the lower Ghengom.
[Naka] *curses and scrambles for her light.*
[Naka] Eng--oof--Dur! Are you okay?
[Eng-dur] naka?
[Nemnosti-GM] All right, Naka, eventually you find Eng-dur.
[Eng-dur] There's connifers :o
[Nemnosti-GM] Naka, from your perspective you see Eng-dur sort of glaze over and step forward as if unaware of his surroundings. You know he sees things sometimes - sigillants are strange - but you've never been present with him when he's quite like this.
[Naka] Eng-dur, are you okay?
[Eng-dur] don't fall in the big hole, Naka
[Naka] *looks him over, despite being a little worse for wear herself.*
[Naka] *looks over.*
[Nemnosti-GM] You scamper ahead and see, not a crack exactly, but an opening in the earth. It looks to be a building foundation of rough-hewn granite, perhaps ten feet on each side, with three walls still intact and a cellar floor below. It looks to be very old but still more or less intact, with the exception of the south wall which seems to have collapsed.
[Eng-dur] Should we go around?
[Nemnosti-GM] You hear a noise ahead of you - a high-pitched whimper. It's coming from below the ground level.
[Naka] *steps between it and Eng-dur.*
[Naka] Hello?
[Eng-dur] 9I assume this is what Naka sees/hears, nit me off in mornign forest land :V)
[Eng-dur] hi! :D
[Naka] (Oh, yeah, I was assuming this part was both of us)
[Nemnosti-GM] Eng-dur, the moment passes, and you find yourself back where ... well, not where you expected to be, but back with Naka, in the dark, in the Ghengom.
[Eng-dur] oh!
* Eng-dur says, blinking
[Eng-dur] its gone.
[Nemnosti-GM] You hear the whimper again.
[Naka] Hey. Where did you go?
[Eng-dur] huh
[Naka] *will be dividing her attention between Eng-dur and the whimper.*
[Eng-dur] there was a strange forest and a path with mushrooms and then there was a big crack all of a sudden and the path was on the other side
* Eng-dur checks to see if he still has any mushrooms
[Naka] A path of mushrooms led you here?
[Eng-dur] it was the morning though
[Naka] Huh.
[Naka] *will inch closer to the structure and the sound.*
[Eng-dur] yeah! it was all ilurushas, too
[Eng-dur] maybe they weren't real though, i picked some...
[Naka] Oh, wow, really?
[Naka] Oh. :(
[Nemnosti-GM] Eng-dur, make yet another Brain check.
* Eng-dur checks his foraging bag

[Nemnosti-GM] Yes, there are ilurushas in your bag.
[Eng-dur] oooh yesssss
* Eng-dur pulls one out for her
[Naka] Oh, wow, so they were real.
[Eng-dur] I guess!
[Naka] *looks around for any more in the immediate area.*
[Eng-dur] ha ha maybe that explaisn the vision! though, I only saw them after....

They find a little dog in the building foundation, and Naka goes down to recover it

[Nemnosti-GM] There's that whimpering noise again, and then a ... bark?
[Naka] Oh!
[Naka] Hello?
[Eng-dur] oh... I didn't hear that before. is it a dog?
[Naka] *whistles, and will approach cautiously but more quickly.*
[Nemnosti-GM] The noise is down in this hole/cellar/foundation thing.
[Naka] I think so...
* Eng-dur will lean down to look in the hole
[Naka] *does the same.*
[Eng-dur] pass me a light and I'll hang it down
[Nemnosti-GM] A flash of flaxen fur, and a quick movement, are all you can see from your magical light from this vantage.
[Eng-dur] it must be stuck
[Naka] (do I have any sort of string or rope on me?)
[Eng-dur] maybe we could make a ramp for it with a lod or somethign?
[Eng-dur] (log)

This one is too young to have been travelling alone, but you can't see any sign of others in the vicinity.
