+ | ===Mol brings Firrin to meet with Norn for a private tour of the Arbor===
+ |
* Firrin is happy to accompany Mol to the Arbor, partly for maybe? Social? opportunities? But also to see how he's looking >.> (and to get out of the house...)
+ |
* Molgrin is wearing the new russet suit and the gold striped waistcoat you picked out for him, and has his hair back in a ponytail - he's looking quite presentable, although I'm sure you could fix his tie and his hair and shoes and and and....
+ |
* Norn should be able to schedule a time for Mol to visit when it's not supposed to be particularly busy, likely in the morning or early afternoon.
+ |
* Firrin has a deep violet suit today and a pale cream waistcoat with a paisley pattern
+ |
Firrin> oh it does look quite well :)
+ |
Molgrin> All thanks to you :)
+ |
Firrin> do you mind if I just..
+ |
* Firrin raises his hands but managed to keep his hands to himself for a moment
+ |
Molgrin> oh, please do - I tried to get the cravat the way you showed me, but I'm not sure I did it quite right
+ |
Firrin> mostly! | ||
+ |
* Firrin can just reorder the knot sightly, bur can't help straightenign your pocket square as well
+ |
Firrin> There. Perfect :)
+ |
Molgrin> Thank you :D | ||
+ |
Molgrin> I like your outfit as well, it's a good colour on you.
+ |
Firrin> thank you! | ||
+ |
Firrin> shall we go in? | ||
+ |
Firrin> or... wherever we are meeting him
+ |
Molgrin> Yes, I guess we should.
+ |
Norn> (I'm assuming a servant will receive you guys?)
+ |
Molgrin> (makes sense - should they escort us to the garden to meet you there?)
+ |
Norn> (That'll work. Presumably some random elf servant can do so)
+ |
* Norn will be waiting in the garden with refreshments, dressed in more casual (but still very nice) traditional Vanilorran robes for the occasion.
+ |
Molgrin> Hello! | ||
+ |
Norn> Hello, and welcome again.
+ |
* Norn smiles. | ||
+ |
* Molgrin waves cheerfully upon spotting you there, as he comes over
+ |
Molgrin> It's so different here when it's not full of people!
+ |
Firrin> yes, good morning Cano valacirca :)
+ |
Norn> I had some luncheon prepared, if you're hungry, or I am assured it can wait if you want to look around first thing.
+ |
Molgrin> Oh, well, a little snack might be nice :)
+ |
Molgrin> Thank you so much.
+ |
Molgrin> I mean, for the lunch, but also for taking the time to show us around. I really appreciate it.
+ |
* Molgrin has a sketchbook tucked under his arm
+ |
Firrin> That's very kind
+ |
Norn> It allows me the opportunity to show off without it being too unseemly, so I feel I should thank you.
+ |
Norn> How have you both been finding the season so far? Hopefully not quite so taxing as its first outing.
+ |
Molgrin> Oh, it's been quite interesting so far. I feel as though I've met a lot of people already.
+ |
Firrin> yes, its been good, but I think it's still early, isn't it?
+ |
Firrin> Othe than the masquesarde, I haven't attended any of the larger formal events
+ |
Firrin> though, that was quite a lot
+ |
* Molgrin nods | ||
+ |
* Norn nods. | ||
+ |
Molgrin> I'm looking forward to some of the salons and smaller gatherings.
+ |
Molgrin> Well, like this one, I suppose :)
+ |
* Molgrin helps himself to some of the refreshments
+ |
* Firrin will snack politely
+ |
Molgrin> Can you tell me a little more about your work here?
+ |
Molgrin> I'm so curious about the gardens, is that mainly what you do?
+ |
Norn> It has been much of my work and learning in Highmark, yes. The Arbor is something of a testing ground and laboratory for a variety of horticultural endeavors, with the ultimate goal of expanding our, by which I mean the Confederacy's, agricultural production.
+ |
Norn> Was that too technical? I find I can get caught up in it.
+ |
Molgrin> No, I think I get it. Working on growing new kinds of plants that will produce more food.
+ |
* Norn nods. | ||
+ |
* Firrin nods | ||
+ |
Norn> Or medicine, or timber, or fiber, and so on.
+ |
* Molgrin nods | ||
+ |
Molgrin> Does Lord Callais work on that sort of thing himself, or is he more hands off?
+ |
Norn> If I'm honest, I was pleasantly surprised at how involved both Lords Callais are with this work.
+ |
Firrin> oh? | ||
+ |
Norn> It would be easy, I think, for it to be an abstraction, but they take a genuine interest and put in actual labor.
+ |
Firrin> I woudl have thought they were both quite busy. particularly the councillor
+ |
Molgrin> That's interesting.
+ |
Norn> I think this sort of work is, if you'll pardon the inevitable pun, quite grounding.
+ |
* Molgrin chuckles at that
+ |
* Firrin smiles | ||
+ |
Norn> And they have a refreshingly...pragmatic outlook on what they do here.
+ |
Firrin> how so? | ||
+ |
Norn> Vanilorra can be quite hidebound and traditional, but the work here is concerned with more general utility as opposed to simply further refinement of existing practices.
+ |
Norn> It's more of a...consolidation of pan-Nerathi knowledge.
+ |
Firrin> I suppose that follows with his broader political approach? So I understand, anyway
+ |
Firrin> I can't claim to have a deep understanding, but that's his reputation at least
+ |
* Norn nods. | ||
+ |
Molgrin> If it's not too personal a question, what are they like? as individuals, I mean.
+ |
* Norn looks around a little bit just to be sure, then will lean in conspiratorially.
+ |
Norn> I can't claim to know Lord Jesseryn very well at all, but Lord Jeremyn has been very welcoming. I would hazard they come off as laconic or cold to a Highmarker, but by Vanilorran standards, they're practically effusive.
+ |
* Molgrin nods | ||
+ |
Norn> I did mention your work to Lord Jeremyn, and he was interested in seeing some samples, if you'd like.
+ |
Firrin> I'm glad, then, if you are working with at least Lord Jeremny so closely!
+ |
* Firrin smiles on Mol's behalf
+ |
Firrin> oh that's wonderful!
+ |
Molgrin> thank you, that's great! I was worried it might be presumptuous of me to expect, but I did bring my sketch book...
+ |
Norn> Lord Jesseryn has, um, cultivated a culture of valuing talent wherever it is found.
+ |
Norn> Would you like to take a look around? Perhaps something will spark inspiration?
+ |
Molgrin> I'd love to! | ||
+ |
* Norn smiles and will gesture for you both to follow. He'll take you through the nearby gardens, which are specifically designed for conditions around Highmark, though he points out the more distant ones which mimic other Confederacy biomes for later.
+ |
* Molgrin admires the more unusual plants in particular, and will do some quick sketches if not prevented ;)
+ |
* Firrin really doens't know anything about plants, complete city boy, maybe knows some common weed names :x
+ |
* Molgrin asks questions about some of them as well (but I won't make you make up a bunch of plant nonsense unless you want to ;)
+ |
Norn> (heh) | ||
+ |
* Norn will happily spout off plant facts.
+ |
Norn> (presumably we can come across Euphrastus somewhere in the gardens?)
+ |
* Firrin can listen to plant facts politely and try not to betray his ignorance :x
+ | |||
+ | ===The trio overhears Euphrastus's dismay about some 'records' he's been asked to examine===
+ |
Euphrastus> (you are wandering by a window when you hear some loud swearing in two languages from inside, only one of which you know. You recognize Euphrastus's voice.)
+ |
* Molgrin glances over, curiously
+ |
Euphrastus> You call this an invoice?!?
+ |
Euphrastus> This is some yokel codswallop right here!
+ |
* Lan-home doesn't recognize either voice but goes into servant more 'hear nothing see nothing' mode on instinct
+ |
* Firrin doesn't recognize either voice but goes into servant more 'hear nothing see nothing' mode on instinct
+ |
* Norn gives the other two an apologetic and somewhat confused look, then will try to go see what's the matter.
+ |
* Euphrastus is looking at a mixture of hand-sized yellowish scales and copper-dipped leaves, strung together with a complex mesh of leather cord.
+ |
* Euphrastus shakes his head in bafflement mixed with rage.
+ |
Norn> Oh, uh, Lord Greae, I believe?
+ |
Norn> (Graeae*) | ||
+ |
* Euphrastus looks out through the window.
+ |
Euphrastus> Oh, Valacirca. I, uhh ... I am deeply sorry, you were not meant to hear that.
+ |
Molgrin> Is everything... okay?
+ |
* Molgrin asks, a bit warily
+ |
Euphrastus> I'm ... well. I'm trying to aid my dear mother with these saddle-receipts from Yondon.
+ |
Euphrastus> Apparently they tie these onto their tack when they're travelling on their beasts, as a sort of noisy, incoherent record of tribute?
+ |
Euphrastus> I don't know.
+ |
Molgrin> Are you sure they aren't pulling your leg?
+ |
* Molgrin asks, more curious
+ |
Euphrastus> I'm really starting to wonder.
+ |
Euphrastus> These are supposedly linked together in a way that produces a record of transactions, and in principle - in principle, mind you - one could learn something from the impressions they leave.
+ |
Euphrastus> But I'm afraid all I've learned is that leaves dipped in copper can carry quite a sharp edge.
+ |
Norn> I would imagine. Do you need a healer?
+ |
Euphrastus> Thank you, I'm fine, I'm sure. More frustrated than truly injured.
+ |
Euphrastus> I apologize, you were showing your gardens to your colleagues, and I have interrupted your peace.
+ |
Norn> Not at all. Would you care to take a break and join us for a bit?
+ |
* Firrin is considering the mess of scales and copper in a way he hopes is inobtrusive
+ |
* Euphrastus sets the tangled morass on the table.
+ |
Euphrastus> Sure. I could probably use the break. I don't think there's anything here for Mother anyway.
+ |
Molgrin> What would your mother need with these? I mean, if there was anything to them.
+ |
Norn> She didn't give you any indication as to their interpretation?
+ |
Euphrastus> I think the theory is that these records might provide some clue for future investments. They're not written, exactly, so understanding them is a bit of a trick. But perhaps if I could determine whether their creator was attempting some deception ... I don't know.
+ |
Euphrastus> Here, let me come outside so we're not talking through a window.
+ |
* Euphrastus closes up his work and heads out to meet everyone.
+ |
Firrin>
q> I thought they were quite pretty.... if disordered
+ |
Molgrin> They might make nice jewelry, if not a viable financial record :)
+ |
Firrin> they might just need to be untangled?
+ |
Firrin> well, its none of my buisness
+ |
* Euphrastus sighs. | ||
+ |
Euphrastus> The various linkages between the nodes are meant to indicate individual transactions. But I agree with your assessment, they are hardly a viable means of conducting commerce.
+ |
* Firrin folds his arms behind his back and straightens up a little
+ |
Euphrastus> At any rate, apologies again. Euphrastus Tinnane of the Graeae, at your service.
+ |
Molgrin> Nice to meet you. I'm Molgrin Braalk.
+ |
* Molgrin offers his hand to shake.
+ |
Firrin> oh, ah, Firrin Malassar
+ |
* Firrin gives a polite bow
+ |
* Molgrin realizes maybe he was supposed to bow and tries that instead
+ |
Norn> Apologies, I should have introduced you all.
+ |
Molgrin> I don't think I've ever met a cyclops before. This might seem like a strange question, but... do you have depth perception in your vision?
+ |
Euphrastus> Not a strange question at all.
+ |
Euphrastus> We do have depth perception but it is quite different from all you binocular folk.
+ |
Molgrin> That's fascinating.
+ |
Euphrastus> It relies on the relative motion of objects.
+ |
Molgrin> I'm something of an artist, so the idea that we see things differently is very interesting to me.
+ |
Norn> Mr. Braalk has been taking sketches of some of the gardens.
+ |
Euphrastus> Ah, fascinating! Aren't they remarkable? The Arbor is a respite amidst all this urbanity.
+ |
Molgrin> It's beautiful.
+ |
* Firrin nods his agreement
+ |
* Norn smiles. | ||
+ |
Norn> And here I thought all you Highmarkers quite valued your urbanity. ;)
+ |
Molgrin> Perhaps it allows us to experience the best of both worlds :)
+ |
Norn> A worthy and enlightened sentiment, I should think.
+ |
Euphrastus> I grew up in Mag Tureah ... gardens were not our strong suit, there.
+ |
* Norn tries not to react too strongly to that.
+ |
Norn> I'm, ah, given to understand there are fungal groves there that dwarf the Arbor, but I suppose that is quite different.
+ |
Firrin> I think they're not commonly a strong suit in Highmark... not outside of the upper tiers, certainly
+ |
Molgrin> Sometimes people have little kitchen gardens in the lower tiers, but it's nothing like this.
+ |
* Lan-home is now known as Fritz
+ |
Norn> I've seen a few. It's remarkable what people are able to grow even in this environment.
+ |
* Firrin nods | ||
+ |
Molgrin> Well, when you need to survive, lots of things are possible :)
+ |
* Norn 's face falls a little.
+ |
* Molgrin says cheerfully, but realizes probably he's talking too much about The Poors
+ |
Norn> You're not wrong.
+ |
Molgrin> Sorry, I didn't meant to make things awkward.
+ |
Norn> Not at all. | ||
+ |
Euphrastus> And here we see too that practicality need not forgo considerable aesthetics. Useful, but also sublime.
+ |
Norn> My experience of survival is wholly different; I was simply reminded.
+ |
* Norn nods to Euphrastus.
+ |
* Firrin just smiles politely through this
+ |
Molgrin> It's just strange to get used to this kind of environment! I mean, it's lovely, but I always feel a little bit like... I've been transplanted, I suppose :)
+ |
* Norn smiles at that. | ||
+ |
Norn> I truly should introduce you to Lord Jeremyn when the opportunity arises.
+ |
Euphrastus> One does, with enough time, become accustomed to it.
+ |
Molgrin> I trust you're right about that.
+ |
Firrin> :) | ||
+ |
* Molgrin gives Firrin's knee a little nudge under the table, nothing too hard, just a little 'hey it's ok' kind of acknowledgement of him being there
+ |
Molgrin> (like knee to knee. not grabbing you under the table ;)
+ |
Firrin> (are we at a table? I missed that :x)
+ |
Norn> (We can be?) | ||
+ |
Norn> (We could have sat back down for snacks)
+ |
Molgrin> (oh I thought we went back for snacks)
+ |
Firrin> (that works) | ||
+ |
* Firrin 's expression softens slightly, or maybe just shows a trace of wistfulness or... something, briefly
+ |
Norn> Lord Graeae, is there something significant about those receipts that your mother asked you to take a look at them?
+ |
Euphrastus> Well, that is an excellent question.
+ |
Euphrastus> Not as far as I have been able to discern.
+ |
Euphrastus> It's been through so many hands, it's just a muddle.
+ |
Molgrin> How do you mean?
+ |
* Molgrin asks, curiously
+ |
Euphrastus> Well, these various elements, each comes from a specific transaction.
+ |
Euphrastus> But unlike, say, a piece of jewelry that has a creator, and then a sequence of owners, one of these objects has many owners, each of whom has handled perhaps only a part of it.
+ |
Euphrastus> And then they have been brought together, but ... the totality of it, has no coherence.
+ |
Norn> Like reading excerpts from different books and trying to make a readable whole?
+ |
Euphrastus> As if each page were written in a different hand.
+ |
Molgrin> So... you can detect who the previous owners were?
+ |
Euphrastus> Yes, that's right, Mr. Braalk. I can learn something whenever there was some emotion associated with the act, it gets left behind on the object. Not just owners, but really anyone who has a strong association.
+ |
Molgrin> Fascinating :o
+ |
Euphrastus> So, for instance, if someone had a receipt associated with having been swindled, that would certainly resonate.
+ |
Euphrastus> It really is not my specialty, accountancy. That's my mother - she works here serving as a financial advisor.
+ |
Euphrastus> My work, in the main, pertains to antiquities.
+ |
Norn> Out of curiosity, would that work only if the person knew they had been swindled? I would imagine there wouldn't be such a strong emotion otherwise.
+ |
Euphrastus> Exactly so.
+ |
Firrin> do they have to have touched it? Or can an impression attach itself without that?
+ |
Euphrastus> And, even if they believed they had been swindled, but had not, that would leave an impression.
+ |
Euphrastus> Touch is the chief way. But it need not be exact. Something that rests against clothing, or handled with gloves, that would be enough.
+ |
Firrin> at the time of the emotion or just any time?
+ |
Firrin> I'm sorry if I'm prying.
+ |
Euphrastus> No, not at all! It can all be very complicated.
+ |
Firrin> but, say, if they later learned they had been swindled, would that carry through?
+ |
* Firrin says with a nod of acknowledgement
+ |
Euphrastus> So, for instance, once I evaluated a musical automaton, and the impressions, I believe, were really from the hearers, not the creator.
+ |
Molgrin> Oh, that's really interesting.
+ |
Norn> Oh, that's quite fascinating.
+ |
Euphrastus> But simply being in the presence of an object while one is having an emotion is not enough. There must be a connection - as between two belly-scales linked with a leather cord.
+ |
Firrin> messy and at time incomprehensible connections?
+ |
Euphrastus> Exactly so. And the more connections there have been over an object's history, it can be overwhelming.
+ |
Norn> So much like navigating the season, hmm? ;)
+ |
* Euphrastus laughs. | ||
+ |
Euphrastus> Yes, exactly like wandering through the Sehanine Masquerade hoping that someone will tell you what all the rules are.
+ |
Molgrin> Do.. do people do that?
+ |
Euphrastus> I have absolutely no idea.
+ |
Molgrin> I mean... I didn't realize that was an option, or I'd have asked for the rule book to start with :)
+ |
Euphrastus> I think not.
+ |
Euphrastus> While I have lived here in Highmark for some time now, it is still a baffling set of customs and norms to manage. Not least when one is the tallest one in the room and everyone is always looking at you.
+ |
Euphrastus> I don't know what parties to attend, what events are optional, any of that. And being my parents' only child, and where neither of them went through anything like this.
+ |
Molgrin> Oh... yes, I suppose that must be strange.
+ |
Euphrastus> Mainly I have learned to be good at pretending at comfort.
+ |
Norn> I can imagine that's a valuable skill.
+ |
Norn> However unfortunate the necessity.
+ |
Euphrastus> What events are any of you planning to attend in the near future?
+ |
Molgrin> Well, I hear there are some salons that might be of interest?
+ |
* Molgrin glances over to Firrin to see what he says
+ |
Firrin> oh, yes... | ||
+ |
Firrin> I've heard of some, but as you say, the details can be elusive without the right connections
+ |
* Firrin says, frowning slightly
+ |
Molgrin> Do you have any suggestions, perhaps?
+ |
Firrin> for Salons? | ||
+ |
Molgrin> Yes, well, or any other events that might be worthwhile?
+ |
* Molgrin asks everyone
+ |
Norn> I believe there is one at the [art museum I can't remember if we've named] in a few days.
+ |
Molgrin> Oh, that would be very interesting!
+ |
Euphrastus> Indeed. | ||
+ |
* Molgrin looks over at Firrin
+ |
Molgrin> Would you like to go to that?
+ |
Firrin> Oh - that would be lovely, yes!
+ |
Firrin> Maybe someone there will have an idea about other events as well?
+ |
Norn> I think that's how these things are often done. Attendance at one leads to another, and so on.
+ |
* Firrin nods | ||
+ |
Euphrastus> That makes a certain sense - unless one fails to make connections, in which case I can imagine the season would be very frustrating.
+ |
Molgrin> well, that would surely be a great idea. and we've already made connections with you so we're off to a good start :)
+ |
Firrin> I should probably ask Lady Paiza... she may have some other ideas...
+ |
* Molgrin nods | ||
+ |
Firrin> I mean, she may know of other events
+ |
Euphrastus> Who is that, Lady Paiza, if I may ask?
+ |
Firrin> Oh, ahh, Lady Paiza Dreatus Nykona... My Fiancée :)
+ |
Firrin> Hers is a house that much have many interesting relics with strong emotional ties, I'm sure.
+ |
Euphrastus> Ah, congratulations on your betrothal, then!
+ |
Firrin> Thank you, that's very kind :)
+ |
Euphrastus> It seems you have already won this strange game of ours.
+ |
Firrin> I've been quite fortunate.
+ |
Firrin> My father arranged everything, so it hardly felt like I had to play at all.
+ |
* Firrin realizes that maybe sounds like bragging and freezes
+ |
Norn> You're lucky to have such an early start, I would think.
+ |
Firrin> I men - its his connections, not mine, that's all.
+ |
Norn> A good foundation on which to build.
+ |
Firrin> [MONOLOGUE] I don't know what kind of fortune, or what I have won, exactly. It's so much to go from pennies to all of this, to think of marrying someone, a woman, that I hardly know, and leaving everything I know to move to a strange city surrounded by the dead and undead. Terrifying! And I've only just found Mol, I hate to have to lose him again when it feels like we could become much closer.... Or even to make new friends here just to lose them. But what else is my life for, I don't have any other options. I'm sure if this falls through Mr. Malassar with turf me and mother back out on the street and say it was all a mistake! At best - at worse he'll have me exiled for my debts. Everything just feels so dire the minute I let myself think of it, it just feels inevitable that I'll fails when I don't even want to succeed! What to do... ugh.
+ |
Firrin> [done!] | ||
+ |
Euphrastus> Well, let us hope we all find such fertile soil on which to build our gardens.
+ |
Firrin> :) Indeed :) | ||
+ | |||
+ | ===Folks gather for a day at the zoo!===
+ |
* Norn will be unfailingly punctual, dressed in more typical Highmarker attire for this outing, perhaps a bit awkward with his (new) hat.
+ |
* Aleyn will arrive with Saiya and a cluster of smaller kids of various sizes and species ;) He is a human man of probably about 50 years of age, greying hair, tall and thin, with a beaky nose, dressed in casual but well-made clothing with only a few minor holes and stains.
+ |
* Saiya wears an orange sundress and a big floppy hat with a flower decorating the brim.
+ |
* Fritz is wearing a grey-green suit the kind of expensive that doesn't look Fancy but you can just tell from how it fits that it was made for him rather than just tailored.
+ |
* Fritz has gloves, of course, and a quite nice hat
+ |
* Molgrin will wear the other of his new suits, the teal one, and has his hair loose for once. No hat.
+ |
* Galatea is wearing a white walking dress and deep blue spencer jacket, her hair up and pinned with a floral decoration.
+ |
* Galatea waves to the others with a big smile.
+ |
Fritz> hello! | ||
+ |
Fritz> So good to see everyone... I think everyone?
+ |
Fritz> is Mr. Raveni here?
+ |
* Norn looks about for him.
+ |
Aleyn> I'm just here as a nominal chaperone, don't mind me. I trust that you're mostly capable of taking care of yourselves.
+ |
* Raveni walks up quickly, seeing that he's late
+ |
* Norn smiles. | ||
+ |
Norn> Ah, you made it. Good to see you, Raveni.
+ |
Raveni> Hello! Apologies for my lateness, I got a little bit side-tracked looking for a suitable hat
+ |
* Galatea will try not to geek out about one of the Thunderbolts being here.
+ |
Raveni> Good to see you too, Norn
+ |
Galatea> I think you picked a quite lovely one. :)
+ |
* Raveni smiles nervously
+ |
* Raveni has Mshauri with him
+ |
* Saiya is in that awkward position of 'ugh my DAD' and also realizing that to other people her dad is cool ;)
+ |
Galatea> Was there anything in particular people were interested in seeing first?
+ |
Saiya> Oh, we HAVE to see the rust monster! it's so fun when they feed it :D
+ |
Saiya> If you're lucky you get to toss in, oh, old bits of metal and cans and just EVERYTHING!
+ |
Galatea> Oh, that does sound fun!
+ |
* Lanpc is now known as Mshauri
+ |
Saiya> They have to keep it in a glass enclosure so it doesn't just eat its way OUT :o
+ |
Fritz> oh yes, that is always fun!
+ |
* Raveni stays quiet. They're just happy to be here
+ |
* Mshauri is being a Totally Norma Dog, mmmhmmm
+ |
* Mshauri has a litle vest on to look Official though
+ |
Fritz> I think that is over towards the far side of the zoo... or it was last time I was here but tbhat was some time ago now
+ |
Aleyn> You did always like the little vending machine where you put in a coin and get some iron filings to throw to it :)
+ |
Fritz> we could make our way around though?
+ |
Saiya> Da-aaaad. | ||
+ |
* Saiya rolls her eyes. | ||
+ |
Fritz> Oh I loved that! ^-^
+ |
* Galatea grins. | ||
+ |
Galatea> Well, if it's on the far side, then it will take us past plenty of other things to see.
+ |
Fritz> One time my brother got in trouble because he brought a sword from home to feed it :x
+ |
* Saiya giggles | ||
+ |
Norn> I hope it wasn't an important one.
+ |
Fritz> I was very young so I don't remember it
+ |
Fritz> and no, I don't think so!
+ |
Fritz> they always seemed to have so *many
* swords, btu that's Sentinels I suppose
+ |
* Galatea nods. | ||
+ |
Molgrin> I've never been before, so I'm interested to see just about anything :)
+ |
Galatea> Shall we? | ||
+ |
Fritz> oh yes of course :D
+ |
* Molgrin has a sketchbook with him
+ |
Fritz> This way I believe!
+ |
* Fritz will head towards where he thinks the display is (but I will let other poeple describe exhibits)
+ |
* Saiya will walk ahead so she isn't forced to stay too close to her father ;)
+ |
* Raveni falls in near to Norn
+ |
Raveni> So, Norn, what are you most looking forward to seeing?
+ |
* Saiya has a slight limp which probably is more noticable as we walk longer distances, though she mainly tries to ignore it.
+ |
* Aleyn mostly lets the younger kids run around and tire themselves out, while keeping a distant eye on the older ones
+ |
* Mshauri is keeping an Eye on Norn >.>
+ |
Norn> I believe they have an *olvaran*, and I've never actually seen one in real life.
+ |
Norn> Though I believe here they call them 'shambling mounds'.
+ |
* Fritz will offer Saiya his arm
+ |
* Saiya accepts it with a shy smile
+ |
Saiya> thank you :3 | ||
+ |
* Galatea smirks and will waggle her eyebrows at Saiya when Fritz isn't looking.
+ |
* Saiya makes a 'shut UP' kind of face back at her :D
+ |
Molgrin> Is it a kind of plant?
+ |
* Molgrin asks Norn | ||
+ |
Raveni> I can't say I'm surprised that you're excited to see one, given your predilection for plants
+ |
Fritz> Hmm? | ||
+ |
Norn> An ambulatory one. They're not particularly common anywhere, but there are some in the more remote parts of my homeland.
+ |
* Fritz loks back at his cousin to see what that was about, but just catches her smiling, I'm sure
+ |
* Galatea is a picture of beatific innocence.
+ |
Fritz> Oh well - I don't remember this being here - i hope I'm not leading us astray - you'll have to tell me if so, Miss Harrowden!
+ |
* Fritz says pulling up to a large enclosure
+ |
Saiya> Well, I do think you're DEFINITELY on the right track :D
+ |
* Molgrin looks around curiously at the sights, but will kind of try to subtly hang back to talk to Aleyn when he gets a chance.
+ |
* Saiya stands on tiptoe as she peers into the enclosure, which is full of large boulders and a pond and other types of 'natural' environmental features.
+ |
Saiya> oh! it's over there! a BULETTE :D It almost blends right in with the rocks.
+ |
* Galatea peers curiously.
+ |
Galatea> Isn't it able to burrow out? I thought that was a thing they could do.
+ |
Aleyn> I think they have a magical barrier underneath the exhibit.
+ |
Norn> There's an explanation on the plaque.
+ |
Aleyn> At least, I sure hope they do.
+ |
* Norn points. | ||
+ |
* Raveni walks along the enclosure wall to get a better view
+ |
Galatea> Oh, heh, of course.
+ |
* Galatea goes to read it.
+ |
Aleyn> Warryn used to have a bulette... I mean as much as one can 'have' a bulette. they're not really great pets.
+ |
* Mshauri sniffs but can't see over the barrier :(
+ |
Fritz> It must be sleeping? basking?
+ |
* Raveni nudges Mshauri and tilts his head toward a bench placed conveniently near the barrier
+ |
* Mshauri hops up, hoping it doesn't deter from his goodboi impression, and ways his fluffy tail
+ |
Galatea> That's right! They mention it in The Alabaster Pillar.
+ |
Galatea> >.> | ||
+ |
Aleyn> Oh, is that one of the novels? I admit I kind of lost track of all of them.
+ |
Galatea> Ah, yes, one of the, um, unauthorized ones.
+ |
* Aleyn chuckles | ||
+ |
Fritz> I think its is some of the authorized ones too
+ |
Aleyn> Well, those are more fun anyway.
+ |
* Raveni has become distracted by another enclosure housing dire wolves
+ |
Raveni> Mshauri, look | ||
+ |
* Saiya rolls her eyes slightly at her dad being embarrassing
+ |
* Mshauri comes over and stands by Raveni, but the hackles go right up
+ |
Mshauri> <m> oh those assholes....
+ |
Raveni> What have you got against them, again?
+ |
Fritz> is that quite intrusive?
+ |
* Raveni asks quietly | ||
+ |
Fritz> The books I mean - or do they just sort of carry on without bothering you too much?
+ |
Aleyn> Well, they bear so little connection to reality, other than some similarities of names, I just always thought they were entertaining.
+ |
Mshauri> <m> Ugh, it's complicated. They're just bullies and snobs, okay?
+ |
Norn> Everything all right?
+ |
* Norn will ask, walking over.
+ |
Aleyn> Kallista used to read them out loud sometimes during boring travel ;p
+ |
Mshauri> >.> grr. | ||
+ |
* Galatea is now known as Narrator
+ |
Fritz> Well, that's good!
+ |
Narrator> The dire wolves stare back nonchalantly.
+ |
* Narrator is now known as Galatea
+ |
Fritz> I'm glad they're entertaining for everyone then :D
+ |
Fritz> ohhh, what's over there?
+ |
* Fritz says, noticing Norn and Raveni have drifted off too look at something else
+ |
* Saiya wanders over with Fritz to see what's going on over there
+ |
* Galatea will follow the crowd.
+ |
Saiya> Wolves? | ||
+ |
* Saiya says, answering Fritz's question
+ |
Raveni> Direwolves | ||
+ |
Fritz> oh is it the dire wolves? :D
+ |
Raveni> I just think they're interesting beasts
+ |
Fritz> Do they have pups this year?
+ |
Fritz> I saw them once and they were just unbelievably adorable :3
+ |
* Mshauri manages to roll his eyes
+ |
* Galatea frowns. | ||
+ |
Raveni> I thought I saw one but they went behind-- oh, there! Over to the right of that structure
+ |
Raveni> looks like they had a litter earlier this year. Amazing how fast they grow
+ |
Galatea> Isn't it kind of strange they're in here?
+ |
Fritz> where? :D | ||
+ |
* Fritz looks where Raveni indicated
+ |
Fritz> :3 | ||
+ |
Raveni> They're playing over there, I keep seeing a couple of them darting in and out of there
+ |
Raveni> (to Galatea) Strange?
+ |
Fritz> they're so adorable!
+ |
Galatea> You know what, I'm getting them confused.
+ |
Galatea> I was thinking of wargs.
+ |
Galatea> *That* would be barbaric.
+ |
Galatea> And the puppies *are* cute.
+ |
Norn> I can't imagine how much they must bring in to feed all these.
+ |
Saiya> They're just like big dogs, almost :3
+ |
* Raveni pats Mshauri's raised hackles down flat
+ |
Raveni> at least until you go to pet them, anyway
+ |
* Mshauri huffs | ||
+ |
* Raveni laughs | ||
+ |
Fritz> Oh yes, you can practically see their teeth all the way from here :o
+ |
Raveni> It's ok Mshauri, you're a better companion than any direwolf
+ |
Norn> The Ferka keep some for hunting.
+ |
Norn> They have a special rapport. It's really something to see.
+ |
Raveni> The Ferka? | ||
+ |
Norn> The other main shifter House of Vanilorra, and our regional neighbors. I've spent a good deal of time in Voronda Ferka's court over the years.
+ |
Raveni> Ah, I'm afraid I'm still catching up on all of the various houses
+ |
* Raveni is embarrassed
+ |
Galatea> Oh, well, that's nothing to be ashamed of. There are *quite* a lot of them.
+ |
Saiya> So many! | ||
+ |
* Saiya agrees | ||
+ |
Saiya> And somehow they keep making MORE?
+ |
Saiya> Well, I mean, of course they ought to, for the goblinoids and so forth. It's only fair :p But it DOES mean more names to remember.
+ |
Norn> Ours included, at least as far as the Confederacy is concerned. :)
+ |
* Norn nods. | ||
+ |
Norn> Shall we press on?
+ |
* Saiya nods | ||
+ |
Saiya> Yes, let's keep going, so we get to see as MUCH as we can :D
+ |
Raveni> Sure | ||
+ |
Fritz> oh yes let's :D | ||
+ | |||
+ | ===Mol hangs back to ask Aleyn for some advice===
+ |
* Molgrin will sort of hang back and try to get a word in with Aleyn, while the others are occupied
+ |
Molgrin> Excuse me, sir - Dovah Aelindar suggested maybe I might benefit from talking to you.
+ |
* Aleyn (~Curtana_n@d24-57-67-2.home.cgocable.net) has joined #awrr3
+ |
Aleyn> Me? What's Brenn been saying? :)
+ |
Molgrin> Oh, nothing bad, certainly! He mentioned you might have some ... words of wisdom, or a blessing.
+ |
Aleyn> Ah... I see. | ||
+ |
* Aleyn smiles, guessing that means 'romantic problems'
+ |
Aleyn> Well, a blessing is easy enough. Words of wisdom, you might have to give me a clue what it's about.
+ |
* Molgrin smiles back, but looks a bit nervous.
+ |
Molgrin> A... a friend of mine is in a difficult situation. He's betrothed to a young lady but he doesn't seem quite happy with the match. I don't know, really, only... I worry that he's gotten in over his head and is stuck now.
+ |
Aleyn> Okay.. is this a friend or a 'friend'?
+ |
Molgrin> Oh, uh, a friend. Just a ... normal friend. Yes.
+ |
* Aleyn nods and disbelieves him
+ |
Aleyn> Well, without knowing your friend, I would probably counsel that no matter how bad a situation seems, there's always a way out. It might not be a pleasant or easy way out, but nothing is so permanent that you can't extricate yourself.
+ |
* Molgrin nods, listening attentively
+ |
Molgrin> I feel much the same, but it's a matter of getting him to believe that.
+ |
Aleyn> Hm, I see. | ||
+ |
Molgrin> He's ... he's like me, he comes from a more modest background, and I think this whole high society thing is ... it's difficult.
+ |
* Aleyn nods wholeheartedly at that
+ |
Aleyn> It really is a different world, and not necessarily a better one in many ways.
+ |
Aleyn> It certainly has its advantages, and many good people, if you can find them. But ...
+ |
* Aleyn weighs how much he wants to say to this random stranger kid
+ |
Aleyn> But when you've known how far this is from what most people ever experience, it's hard to be completely comfortable with it. Does that make sense?
+ |
* Molgrin nods slowly, absorbing that
+ |
Aleyn> Anyway - it might be easier if your friend came to talk to me directly, so I could get a sense of his situation and what's bothering him about the match. Feel free to let him know he can contact me - you can often find me at the temple of Sehanine, or else at home [and he'll give his address]
+ |
Molgrin> I will mention that to him, thank you sir.
+ |
Aleyn> No sir required, just Aleyn. or Mr. Harrowden if you really must.
+ |
Molgrin> Thank you, Mr. Harrowden. I'll be sure to pass that along to him.
+ |
Aleyn> As for the blessing, hm. May Sehanine guide your path, however winding it might be, to reach your desired goal.
+ |
Aleyn> Kind of all-purpose but the older blessings endure for a reason.
+ |
Molgrin> Thank you again. I really appreciate it.
+ |
Aleyn> No trouble at all. Now if you'll excuse me, I should probably make sure my youngest isn't climbing into the drake enclosure :)
+ | |||
+ | ===Raveni has an unexpected reaction to the Fang Titan Drake===
+ |
* Raveni freezes as they walk by another enclosure where an enormous bipedal lizard has just emerged from the trees
+ |
* Norn will let folks move ahead for a moment to check on Raveni.
+ |
Fritz> the Drakes :D | ||
+ |
Norn> (q) Are you all right? I know you said sometimes your mark can cause trouble.
+ |
Galatea> Oh my! | ||
+ |
Fritz> Oh my brothers *loves* all the drakes
+ |
* Galatea marvels up at the drake.
+ |
Fritz> well, loved, Well I'm sure Monty still does
+ |
Raveni> Um. What in the world is *that?*
+ |
* Raveni black spots are slowly appearing on his face and neck
+ |
Fritz> I can't believe people ride them! how in the world to they tame them?
+ |
Raveni> I'm alright Norn, just. Gods. I've never seen something like that before
+ |
* Mshauri leans against Raveni and noses at his hand
+ |
Galatea> It says...Fang Titan Drake. Quite a name.
+ |
* Norn gives Raveni a fortifying nod.
+ |
Fritz> well look at the teeth! The dire wolves were nothing!
+ |
Molgrin> Ooh, very scary sounding!
+ |
Molgrin> (ww) | ||
+ |
Saiya> Ooh, very scary sounding!
+ |
Fritz> does the plaque say where this one is from?
+ |
Fritz> I belioeve the Akhasic delegation gave some to the managerie as gifts after the exhibition!
+ |
Galatea> Northern Morro, though there are similar ones in the Sword Coast, it says.
+ |
Fritz> they weren't able to keep thre thunderdrakes though, I'm so say I missed them
+ |
Fritz> (sad) | ||
+ |
Galatea> I think the map post said there's a whole Ahkasic section they donated.
+ |
Fritz> ooooh, do you think they ride them in combat? :D
+ |
Fritz> oooh! | ||
+ |
* Saiya brightens at that
+ |
* Raveni is still staring, wide-eyed at the beast. Their tail has appeared and golden fur has sprouted along their neck, sticking straight up
+ |
Fritz> is it on the way to the rust monster?
+ |
Galatea> If we take a scenic route.
+ |
Galatea> :) | ||
+ |
Saiya> I've been to Ahkas, it's so FASCINATING there :D My father has relatives there who we've visited and other trips...
+ |
* Norn will stand between Raveni and the others, and put a hand on his arm to try to steady him.
+ |
* Mshauri nudges Raveni again
+ |
Mshauri> psst, come on, you're breakign out
+ |
Mshauri> uhh. woof! | ||
+ |
* Mshauri eyes Norn | ||
+ |
Galatea> You've been to Ahkas! You have to tell us everything!
+ |
Fritz> My brother is posted there!
+ |
Galatea> Right, but neither of us have *been* there.
+ |
Saiya> Oh, well, the BEST thing in Ahkas is the market where they have all the spices and odd fruits and vegetables and things like that. It smells AMAZING!
+ |
Saiya> They have these things that are kind of like a plum but they're not exactly, I don't know, but they're delicious :D
+ |
* Raveni gasps as one leg abruptly Shifts and nearly falls
+ |
Raveni> (quietly) fuck fuck fuck *ow*
+ |
* Raveni grabs Norn's hand to stay upright
+ |
Norn> (q) It's all right. You're safe, you're among friends.
+ |
Mshauri> Come on get him away from here >.>
+ |
* Norn squeezes Raveni's hand and will try to maneuver him aside.
+ |
Norn> (q) Can you walk all right?
+ |
* Mshauri can provide some extra physical support
+ |
Fritz> Where in Akhas is your family from?
+ |
* Fritz asks saiya, oblivious
+ |
* Raveni staggers away with their help
+ |
* Mshauri can guide them toa bench out of sight of the big scary dino
+ |
* Raveni collapses on the bench, kind of wanting to launch himself into the drake enclosure from how mortified he is
+ |
* Mshauri curls up on Rveni's feet and will glare at any passers by who look too closely
+ |
* Raveni covers his face with his clawed hands
+ |
Raveni> Someone just kill me now
+ |
Raveni> Please | ||
+ |
Norn> That sounds extreme.
+ |
Norn> I don't believe anyone noticed.
+ |
Norn> And, if they had, it's nothing to be ashamed of.
+ |
Raveni> I have no idea how we got out of there without anyone noti-- FUCK. You heard Mshauri. I take it back, I don't want to die. My grandfather is going to kill us both.
+ |
Norn> Whyever would he do that?
+ |
Mshauri> wooooof >.> | ||
+ |
Mshauri> he didn't hear shit, right?
+ |
* Mshauri glares at Norn
+ |
Norn> Did someone say something?
+ |
* Raveni gently shoves Mshauri with one foot
+ |
Raveni> Please don't threaten the person currently holding the means to our collective demise.
+ |
* Raveni 's shift is slowly reversing in his morbid amusement at the situation
+ |
Norn> Is it really so serious as that?
+ |
* Norn looks genuinely concerned.
+ |
Raveni> Quite possibly. Have you ever met my grandfather before? The man is obsessed with appearances.
+ |
Mshauri> pfft >.> | ||
+ |
Raveni> His threats regarding the truth about Mshauri needing to nursemaid me around were rather eloquently delivered.
+ |
Norn> I haven't had the...pleasure.
+ |
* Norn scowls. | ||
+ |
Norn> That is quite...dishonorable behavior.
+ |
Norn> (Which is quite a thing to say, for a Vanilorran)
+ |
Raveni> I... Thank you, Norn. I am very grateful to you
+ |
* Raveni realizes he is still holding Norn's hand and drops it like it burned him
+ |
Raveni> I'm sorry you had to see me in such a state.
+ |
* Norn will take his hand back reservedly.
+ |
Norn> As I said before, I can understand not being fully in control of one's, ah, countenance.
+ |
Norn> There's no need to apologize.
+ |
* Raveni is blushing profusely under a fresh wave of fur covering his face
+ |
Mshauri> its just *fur*
+ |
Mshauri> nothing wrong with fur >.>
+ |
Norn> Some might consider it quite flattering.
+ |
Raveni> You know I would love to agree with you, Mshauri, but unfortunately it's not up to us to make up our own rules around appearances. Not yet, at least. (To Norn) We should get back to the others before they notice that we are gone. I don't want any rumours to stain your reputation for the crime of assisting a... friend in distress.
+ |
Norn> I should consider it a worthy price to be paid, but I wouldn't like to inflict reciprocal harm. Are you well enough to rejoin the others?
+ |
* Raveni tests his footing on his no longer-mismatched legs
+ |
Mshauri> I'll keep a nose out for more drakes
+ |
Raveni> Yes, I think so. The tail is still present but I can disguise that easy enough
+ |
Mshauri> but you gotta listen okay? >.>
+ |
Raveni> (to Mshauri) Thank you, my friend. I think I'll be alright to walk by them from here, it was just the shock of seeing that first one that set me off.
+ |
Mshauri> well. I'll keep a nose out anyway >.>
+ |
* Raveni looks up to see the others circling back in their direction
+ |
Raveni> Oh dear, they've noticed our absence.
+ | |||
+ | ===Meanwhile, Fritz, Saiya, and Galatea chat obliviously===
+ |
Fritz>
Fritz> Where in Akhas is your family from?
+ |
Fritz>
* Fritz asks Saiya, oblivious
+ |
Saiya> Oshuar. My grandmother's from there!
+ |
* Galatea (~Galatea@98.97.165.61) has joined #awrr3
+ |
Fritz> oh - thats' more south I think?
+ |
Fritz> Monty was posted in Ebemar but now he's in Yeshual I think?
+ |
* Saiya nods | ||
+ |
Fritz> is it like here were they are all very different?
+ |
Saiya> Well, I think it's not quite as different as here, but maybe I just didn't notice all the differences between each place because I was so busy noticing how different it was from here. Does that make ANY sense?
+ |
Fritz> I think so! | ||
+ |
* Galatea nods. | ||
+ |
Fritz> I'd love to travel more and see it!
+ |
Galatea> Likewise. I basically haven't been anywhere but here and home.
+ |
Fritz> we had been talkign aout a visit before he transferred with all this gate whatever it is, but now he says its too unstable
+ |
Saiya> Oh, it's WONDERFUL, if you do get the chance, you must take it :D I know it's a bit complicated right now though....
+ |
* Galatea nods. | ||
+ |
Fritz> there must be so many scholars coming to study the gate! It sounds so interesting. I'd love to just touch it jjust briefly! Probably that woudl be foolish though
+ |
Saiya> Why would that be?
+ |
Galatea> Just think, something Ioun did all that time ago echoing back now. What a working it must be.
+ |
Fritz> yes! She *must
* be plannig to send a delegation, do you think?
+ |
Saiya> Would you explode or something if you touched it? :D
+ |
Fritz> anyway I've never seen even the crystal fragments but they must have such an interesting structure and properties
+ |
Fritz> I don't know! | ||
+ |
Saiya> well I shouldn't like for you to explode so please don't ;p
+ |
Fritz> maybe it woud be too much and it would just completely fry my brain if its so complex!
+ |
Galatea> It's a gateway to worlds beyond. I can't imagine what all you could learn from it, Fritz.
+ |
Fritz> right? It ight be worth it!
+ |
Galatea> Well, let's hope not that. ;)
+ |
Fritz> oh but, I'm being silly!
+ |
Fritz> no, I can learn about the properties of things if I touch them see? Like that glass fake!
+ |
* Saiya nods | ||
+ |
Saiya> Well, I'm sure something like that would be just FULL of properties.
+ |
* Galatea nods. | ||
+ |
Galatea> Fritz has a much more informative ability. :)
+ |
Fritz> yes :D | ||
+ |
Fritz> it can be a lot though
+ |
* Fritz fiddles with his gloves
+ |
Saiya> What happens when you touch people?
+ |
* Saiya asks curiously | ||
+ |
* Galatea does her best not to smirk.
+ |
* Fritz goes somewhat red
+ |
Fritz> Oh that can be very awkward, i try not to!
+ |
Saiya> oh dear, I'm sorry! I shouldn't have asked!
+ |
Fritz> oh no, I'm the one who brought it up, though, I probably should be better at just keeping it to myself
+ |
Galatea> Should you? It's not some Sentinel secret thing.
+ |
Fritz> Shoudl we move on? or - where did everyone welse go?
+ |
Saiya> PLEASE though, don't feel embarrassed on my account! I am always putting my foot in my mouth.
+ |
Fritz> oh, no, that's true
+ |
Fritz> I mean - about it not being a secret!
+ |
Fritz> I don't think you said anything untoward Miss Harrowden
+ |
Fritz> it *is* a little embarrassing, but it isn't your fault
+ |
Fritz> you know I was thinking it will be so nice to have people come to my house for a dinner so I won't have to feel so awkward about dining!
+ |
* Galatea smiles at that.
+ |
Saiya> Well I know asking about people's marks is not really DONE so I should have just kept my lips sealed, but I was terribly curious. Don't mind me though, please, let's carry on with the sightseeing :D
+ |
Fritz> oh yes, I do want to see the rust monster :D
+ |
Galatea> Yes! Ah, and I think there's Cano Valacirca and Colmacil Meorista right there.
+ |
Fritz> oh there they are!
+ |
* Galatea will happily lead the way towards the rust monster.
+ | |||
+ | ===The parties reconvene===
+ |
* Fritz waves | ||
+ |
Galatea> We were just about to head on towards the rust monster, if you wanted to join. :)
+ |
* Molgrin has settled down to sketch somewhere, waiting for the others to gather again
+ |
Fritz> Oh there hyou are - sorry, we just got caught up chatting, We didn't mean to split off like that!
+ |
Fritz> but yes, it really is quite fun!
+ |
Raveni> I'd be delighted.
+ |
Raveni> Lord Valacirca?
+ |
Norn> Of course. Lead on. :)
+ |
Galatea> Mr. Braalk? | ||
+ |
* Raveni pats Mshauri's head unobtrusively in thanks
+ |
Galatea> Just want to make sure we don't leave anyone behind. :)
+ |
Molgrin> Yes, sorry! I got absorbed in my sketch :) but I can go whenever you're ready!
+ |
* Mshauri licks raveni's hand
+ |
* Galatea can lead folks onwards and will ask Mol about his sketch along the way.
+ |
Raveni> (to Molgrin) What were you sketching, if I might ask?
+ |
Fritz> oh yes, can you show us? It's alright if not, I know how arttists can be
+ |
Molgrin> Oh, well, I mostly do insects and plants. There was a moth that landed on the morning glory vines there and I wanted to scribble it down before it flew away.
+ |
* Molgrin shows you the sketch quite happily
+ |
Molgrin> It probably seems a bit silly to be sketching a moth when there are so many other interesting creatures around...
+ |
Fritz> oh well, the muse does as it will, that's what Mother always says!
+ |
* Molgrin smiles at that
+ |
* Molgrin 's sketch is quite good
+ |
Raveni> Moths are interesting! They don't have the same factor of awe as a drake or a bulette but that doesn't mean they are inferior
+ |
Fritz> I don't know that I've ever seen a moth look so lovely!
+ |
Molgrin> thank you! I do really think insects are interesting, but it's not often an opinion that others share.
+ |
* Molgrin takes his sketchbook back and in doing so accidentally turns a page where there's a sketch that is definitely not of an insect, but a young tiefling man.
+ |
* Molgrin hastily closes the book and hopes no one saw that
+ |
* Raveni definitely saw that. He hides a grin and carefully looks at the exhibits they are passing
+ |
Fritz> you know they can be!
+ |
* Fritz says, not having said that
+ |
Fritz> some of them create some very interesting structures with remarkable properties!
+ |
Galatea> Oh, what was that one?
+ |
* Galatea saw a bit, and wants to see more. ;)
+ |
Raveni> Insects bind the world together. No one seems to want to acknowledge that we owe so much to them.
+ |
Raveni> They're magical, in a way.
+ |
Norn> Well said. | ||
+ |
Molgrin> Oh, um... that was just something I was experimenting with, I don't usually do portraits, but I thought I should branch out...
+ |
* Molgrin says to Galatea, a bit embarrassed
+ |
Galatea> It's always good to expand one's skills. Did someone sit for you?
+ |
Molgrin> Because, you know, most people don't usually commission art of bugs, but they might commission a portrait.
+ |
* Molgrin shakes his head
+ |
* Raveni tries to catch Norn'
+ |
Molgrin> No, it's just a friend. I mean, not a formal sitting.... just a little doodle from memory.
+ |
* Fritz nods to Raveni and then realizes everyone else is talking about something else
+ |
* Raveni tries to catch Norn's eye, still suppressing a laugh
+ |
Galatea> Oh, that's nice. You should give it to them when you're done. A little thanks for inspiration. :)
+ |
Molgrin> Oh, well, I don't know that it's ... good enough for that.
+ |
* Molgrin says, a bit embarrassed
+ |
Galatea> It's the thought that counts, right? However cliche my phrasing.
+ |
Fritz> Yes its true though! It shows hyou thought of your friend :)
+ |
Raveni> I'd be terribly flattered if someone gifted me art of myself, regardless of skill. It shows you care.
+ |
Molgrin> Well, maybe. | ||
+ |
Fritz> well I suppose unless you don't want them to know :o
+ |
Raveni> Why wouldn't you want them to know?
+ |
Fritz> I hope we haven't exposed any secrets ^-^
+ |
Galatea> Oooh, yes, I suppose there is that.
+ |
Fritz> But we are all friends and shall be very kind if so, won't we? :D
+ |
* Galatea fake pouts, but nods.
+ |
* Raveni is oblivious to the romantic connotations and thinks it's just a sweet gift
+ |
Galatea> Of course. We shouldn't like to be discourteous.
+ |
Fritz> so just tell us and well shall leave it be ^-^
+ |
Fritz> I know how it can be when people see what they aren't meant to, ugh!
+ |
Molgrin> It's not that I would not want him to know, but... I would want it to be done in a proper way, not just a sketch. So maybe if I work on it more and finish it properly, then I'll see :)
+ |
* Molgrin says, a bit flushed
+ |
Saiya> Well I'm sure if you do, he'll be quite flattered. I know I would be!
+ |
Fritz> yes, that sounds like a lovely gift :)
+ |
Molgrin> Maybe I ought to try drawing all of you, so I get more practice :)
+ |
Fritz> oh that could be quite fun!
+ |
Fritz> Oh that reminds me I was meant to tell you about salons!
+ |
Molgrin> . o O (and so there isn't just one sketch of Firrin in among all the flowers and bugs)
+ |
Raveni> I'd be happy to | ||
+ |
* Raveni says nervously
+ |
Molgrin> oh, yes, I'd love to hear more. I think I heard there was something coming up at the art gallery?
+ |
Fritz> oh yes! | ||
+ |
* Fritz can list off a bunch of different Salons, some of which art arts and a few more sciencey/technical
+ |
Fritz> there's some political ones as well but I'm not so informed about them ad to know what might me more or less advisable but I can give you the names if you like!
+ |
* Raveni slows as they pass an exhibit housing three cheetahs
+ |
Raveni> Hold a moment, if you would?
+ |
Raveni> I didn't realize they kept these here.
+ |
Galatea> Hmm? Oh, they're so pretty.
+ |
Fritz> hmm? | ||
+ |
Fritz> oh look at them! :D
+ |
* Norn 's focus will be on Raveni.
+ |
* Raveni walks up to the glass and places one hand on it
+ |
Mshauri> uh... wooof -_-
+ |
* Mshauri nudges him | ||
+ |
* Raveni chirps | ||
+ |
Fritz> oh they looks at us :D
+ |
* Saiya squeals excitedly at the adorable creatures
+ |
* Raveni chirps again, calling them to come up
+ |
Fritz> are they listenign to you? :o
+ |
Raveni> Yes. I can speak to them, a little.
+ |
* Fritz glances surreptitiously at the other shifters
+ |
Fritz> oh that's wonderful! What do they have to say? :D
+ |
* Galatea is still entranced by the cheetahs.
+ |
Raveni> There we go! Hello, boys.
+ |
Fritz> I hope you are telling them they are so beautifuland elegant!
+ |
* Raveni laughs as one of the cheetahs rears onto his hind legs right in front of them and bonks the glass with his head
+ |
Fritz> :o | ||
+ |
* Galatea smiles at that.
+ |
Raveni> It's not that complex a communication--it's not actually a language. Feelings, emotions, simple concepts; that's all we can really convey.
+ |
Raveni> They're still animals. These fine gentlemen seem happy and healthy, I'm glad.
+ |
Norn> That's good to know.
+ |
Fritz> oh yes, I'd be quite distressed f they were poorly treated!
+ |
Raveni> I wish we could greet them without the glass in the way. It's probably safer like this for you all though.
+ |
Norn> Best not to chance a sudden mood shift. :)
+ |
* Saiya giggles at that | ||
+ |
Raveni> I've never interacted with them around anyone other than--well, anyone who wasn't of my particular heritage.
+ |
Raveni> Let's go see your rust monster. Thank you for indulging me.
+ |
Galatea> Not at all. That was amazing!
+ |
* Raveni blushes and bobs a small bow to her
+ |
Mshauri> yes, thank *you*, that was amazing!
+ |
Mshauri> (ww) | ||
+ |
Fritz> yes, thank *you*, that was amazing!
+ | |||
+ | ===Mol and Frrin escae a boring Salon===
+ |
* Molgrin dragged you to this salon about botany but it's too boring even for him, so we are chatting discreetly in the back of the room instead of paying attention.
+ |
Firrin> I'm sorry I can't even follow what they are talkign about -_-
+ |
Molgrin> oh I know, it's dreadful. I don't want to leave because it seems rude but honestly it's confusing for me too.
+ |
Molgrin> how about instead I tell you about the zoo the other day :)
+ |
Firrin> are they even talking about plants? it sounds more like arguing over names
+ |
Firrin> oh, yes! how was that?
+ |
Firrin> and I think we could leave, look we woudln't be the first >.>
+ |
Molgrin> It was fun! I wasn't really sure what to expect but it seems like they do a good job taking care of the creatures there, and it was an opportunity to see things I haven't seen before.
+ |
Molgrin> I didn't know a rust monster was kind of like a huge bug!
+ |
Firrin> ...me either | ||
+ |
Firrin> that must have been a pleasant surprise :)
+ |
Firrin> did hyou draw it/
+ |
Molgrin> I did :D | ||
+ |
Molgrin> they had things you could feed to it, it was fascinating
+ |
Firrin> you'll have to show me
+ |
* Molgrin nods | ||
+ |
* Molgrin gets out his sketch book and will page throught it to find the rust monster drawing
+ |
Molgrin> there, that's it
+ |
Firrin> huh - how big is it?
+ |
Molgrin> hmm I guess sort of the size of a pony?
+ |
Molgrin> or a big dog? | ||
+ |
Firrin> that's.. | ||
+ |
* Firrin looks at the drawing again
+ |
Firrin> well I'm glad its enclosed!
+ |
* Molgrin holds his hand out around waist high or a bit higher
+ |
Firrin> you really made it look alove
+ |
Firrin> (alive) | ||
+ |
Molgrin> Yes, me too. It seems quite docile though, I don't think it's very aggressive.
+ |
Molgrin> maybe this one is just well-fed.
+ |
* Firrin nods | ||
+ |
Molgrin> Miss Harrowden's father was there as a chaperone, he was quite nice - down to earth, even though he's famous and so on.
+ |
Firrin> oh - one of the Thunderbolts, right?
+ |
Molgrin> Yes, Aleyn Harrowden. He says to call him Aleyn, or Mr. Harrowden if I insist.
+ |
Molgrin> I did insist >.>
+ |
Firrin> ...I thought they all had titles after Nachtur? :o
+ |
Firrin> I would insist too, goodness :x
+ |
Molgrin> I suppose he must, but I don't know that he bothers to use it? I have no idea really.
+ |
Firrin> well, maybe not, because that woudl make Miss Harrowden... Lady saiya? Wouldn't it?
+ |
Firrin> though I'm not sure how the nachtur titles work
+ |
Molgrin> I think he's the first person I've met here - other than you, obviously - who isn't *from
* this background. Well, I suppose Dovah Aelindar's wife, too, and maybe a few others, but he's the first one who seems really quite... ordinary, you know. not in a bad way. in a way that you think, oh, this person could be someone who is from our neighbourhood, or who works at a shop.
+ |
Molgrin> you know? | ||
+ |
Firrin> hmm. | ||
+ |
Firrin> ...is Doven Aelindar's wife not ordinary?
+ |
Molgrin> oh, hm. | ||
+ |
* Molgrin consider that.
+ |
Molgrin> I think she grew up in a cult or something? I remember hearing that.
+ |
Molgrin> I mean she's very friendly and so on, but not exactly 'ordinary'.
+ |
Firrin> I think they mention it a lot in the novels but I never was sure how reliable they are
+ |
Firrin> hmm | ||
+ |
Molgrin> Well, I haven't had the nerve to ask if it's true....
+ |
Firrin> oh yes, it woudl be quite rude I would think :x
+ |
* Molgrin nods | ||
+ |
Firrin> though I'm sure they've all had to endure more rudeness than that
+ |
Molgrin> Perhaps you're right, but I don't think I should contribute more to it.
+ |
Molgrin> At least, not while I'm relying on them for lodging and introductions and so on.
+ |
Firrin> I wonder how you preserve any ordinaryness under such circumstances
+ |
* Firrin nods | ||
+ |
Molgrin> He probably isn't really as ordinary as he seems. I mean I assume he's quite powerful. But he doesn't put on airs or anything.
+ |
Firrin> that's reassuring... though I suppose that being a famous adventurer means to some extent that hyou can behave how you like
+ |
Molgrin> Anyway, Dovah Aelindar had recommended I ought to talk to him, so I gathered up my courage and did so.
+ |
Firrin> oh, talk to him about what?
+ |
Molgrin> well... I asked Dovah Aelindar about ... whether he knew anything about your intended's family, or anything like that. And about things like how to deal with a match that one wasn't sure about... I hope it isn't too intrusive of me.
+ |
* Firrin is surprised and maybe a little anxious, but cover it quickly with a :)
+ |
Firrin> It was kind of you to think of me.
+ |
Molgrin> He did have some wise advice - at least, it seemed so to me.
+ |
Firrin> oh? | ||
+ |
* Firrin asks with polite interest
+ |
Molgrin> Dovah Aelindar said that he thought it would be good to have a frank conversation with your betrothed about what your expectations are from the match - what she wants and what you want, that is.
+ |
Molgrin> And ... Mr. Harrowden said that no matter what the situation was, there was always a way out, even if it wasn't easy. But he also said that he would like to talk to you directly, if you were willing. He said it would be easier to give advice that way.
+ |
Firrin> well... thank you.
+ |
Molgrin> I am sorry if I overstepped, I only .... worry about you, and I don't really know all the intricacies of high society, so I thought I ought to ask people who did know what was expected here, rather than just telling you what I think, which might be entirely wrong.
+ |
Firrin> and.... what do you think?
+ |
* Molgrin looks at you with hopeful eyes
+ |
* Firrin asks with some amount of reservation
+ |
Molgrin> I think... you deserve to be happy. I don't think that you seem happy with this arrangement, and so if there's a way you could be happy with it.... then that would be good. but if you cannot be happy with it, then I think you shouldn't go ahead with it. Even if it's awkward or difficult. You shouldn't sacrifice your happiness and youth and future to this cause.
+ |
* Molgrin says a bit awkwardly, but trying to keep meeting your eyes
+ |
Firrin> ... | ||
+ |
Firrin> that's very.... I appreciate that, really. But there're thing that must come before happiness
+ |
* Molgrin looks down | ||
+ |
Molgrin> I do understand. So maybe what Dovah Aelindar said is best - that you might talk to her and find some common ground, and then it wouldn't be so ... so difficult.
+ |
Firrin> I appreciate that. It seems very sound.
+ |
* Molgrin nods | ||
+ |
Firrin> maybe I will have some chance, but I'm not sure that I can risk it.
+ |
* Molgrin looks up and tries to smile for you.
+ |
Molgrin> Listen, let's get out of here - this talk isn't getting any more interesting and I'm tired of listening to them drone on.
+ |
Firrin> Yes, let's. | ||
+ |
Firrin> it a waste of good company.
+ |
Molgrin> I tell you what - I'll take you to one of the most exclusive dining establishments in the city. My treat :)
+ |
Firrin> how..? | ||
+ |
Firrin> those kinds of places don't just allow anyone to walk in :o
+ |
Molgrin> Oh, I think this one will.
+ |
* Molgrin says with a more convincing smile.
+ |
Molgrin> After all, I am related to the chef ;)
+ |
Molgrin> And I know she'd like to see you again too.
+ |
Firrin> well... alright...
+ | |||
+ | ===Mol brings Firrin to his Mothers place for dinner and conversation that doesn't go quite how he'd hoped===
+ |
* Molgrin leads the way to Southwall, to his mother's house.
+ |
Molgrin> (I'm sure you can figure out before too long where we are probably heading ;)
+ |
* Firrin is pretty quiet and gets quieter as we pass through the old neighborhood
+ |
* Molgrin opens the door and heads into his family home, where his mother and some younger siblings are working in the kitchen to make dinner.
+ |
* Nary (~Curtana_n@d24-57-67-2.home.cgocable.net) has joined #awrr
+ |
* Nary is now known as Nangha
+ |
* Nangha is a stout middle-aged orc lady with a nose ring and some bracelets that jingle as she works in the kitchen.
+ |
Molgrin> Mom? I hope it's okay, but I came home for dinner - and I brought a friend :)
+ |
Nangha> Well of course it's okay - any time you like, ki
+ |
* Nangha says with a big smile, coming over to hug him.
+ |
Nangha> And who is your friend?
+ |
* Firrin takes a deep breath
+ |
Firrin> Hello Mrs Braalk. It's been a long time.
+ |
* Nangha looks you up and down and then breaks into a cheerful laugh
+ |
Nangha> Firrin, is it? You've grown up so much!
+ |
* Nangha gives you a hug too.
+ |
* Firrin submits to hugs
+ |
* Nangha is quite tall and sturdy, you are thoroughly enveloped by her hugs ;)
+ |
Nangha> You look so handsome - such lovely clothes, both of you :D
+ |
* Firrin smiles at that | ||
+ |
Molgrin> Firrin helped pick them out!
+ |
Firrin> yes well. You wear them very well.
+ |
Nangha> Oh, very nice, very nice :D
+ |
Nangha> And how is your mother?
+ |
* Nangha asks Firrin | ||
+ |
Firrin> oh, ah... | ||
+ |
Firrin> I'm afraid she is not very well these days.
+ |
Nangha> Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.
+ |
Nangha> Is she staying here in Highmark somewhere?
+ |
Firrin> Yes. I.. or, my f.. She's in a care facility, where attendants can best see to her needs.
+ |
* Firrin finally gets it out after a few awkward false starts
+ |
* Nangha nods sympathetically.
+ |
Nangha> Maybe I can pay her a visit, if that wouldn't be too much trouble.
+ |
* Firrin looks awkward and uncertain
+ |
Firrin> I can... see if that's possible.
+ |
Nangha> But if it isn't possible, then just accept my sympathies, and I hope she is comfortable.
+ |
* Nangha says, patting you on the shoulder
+ |
Firrin> thank you. | ||
+ |
Nangha> Now, you are staying for dinner, yes? We can always make room for a few more at our table, so don't worry about a thing. I'm making stew with dumplings.
+ |
Firrin> that sounds wonderful. :)
+ |
Molgrin> (after dinner...)
+ |
* Firrin will be polite but possibly somewhat wirthdrawn over dinner
+ |
* Molgrin will see if he can commandeer his old bedroom from whichever of his younger siblings took it over and bring you up there so we can reminisce about old times and so on. It's a small room in the attic, with a little window that probably when we were kids we could climb out of and onto the roof, but we're a bit big for that now.
+ |
* Molgrin sits down on the bed, which is really the only place to sit other than the floor. There are some kids' toys lying around and a handmade quilt that looks like it's ancient.
+ |
* Firrin makes a litle sound as he stands in the doorway and looks around
+ |
Firrin> its like nothing has chaanged...
+ |
Molgrin> oh... I guess, yeah. It's not my room anymore but it's not like they changed out all the furniture or anything :)
+ |
Molgrin> want to sit down?
+ |
* Molgrin pats the bed next to him
+ |
* Firrin hesitates, but will come sit beside you.
+ |
Molgrin> I'm sorry if this was awkward. I just thought... you seemed like you could use a good meal and some company that wasn't expecting anything from you.
+ |
Firrin> I always liked your mother's stew...
+ |
* Molgrin smiles | ||
+ |
Molgrin> It's good, isn't it?
+ |
Molgrin> She probably thinks you need to fatten up, I saw her give you an extra scoop ;)
+ |
Firrin> well I think she gave you two
+ |
* Molgrin nods, chuckling at that
+ |
Firrin> and an extra dumpling
+ |
Molgrin> She always did think maybe if she just fed me more, I'd get bigger eventually.
+ |
Firrin> I'm glad she's well
+ |
* Molgrin nods | ||
+ |
Firrin> I... | ||
+ |
Firrin> I'd wanted to come back to Southwall, after we left Shom
+ |
Molgrin> Oh... but your mother didn't?
+ |
* Molgrin guesses | ||
+ |
Firrin> I didn't have the funds.
+ |
Molgrin> Oh, I see. | ||
+ |
Molgrin> It must have been difficult.
+ |
Firrin> We wound up down in Hope Falls - i'm sure you can imagien what she thought of that
+ |
Molgrin> I can... | ||
+ |
Firrin> I coudln't find any kind of work that would allow me to care for her... It was .... very dire
+ |
* Molgrin nods sympathetically
+ |
Firrin> and then Mr. Malassar came along.
+ |
Molgrin> I wish I had known, maybe I could have helped. I don't really know what I'd have done, but... I wish I could have done something.
+ |
Molgrin> or at least you wouldn't have had to do all that you did alone.
+ |
Firrin> I appreciate that but...
+ |
Molgrin> but? | ||
+ |
* Molgrin asks gently | ||
+ |
Firrin> anyway. I understand what Mr. Harrowden said but I woudln't be the one paying the price, or not just me
+ |
* Molgrin nods | ||
+ |
* Firrin sniffs | ||
+ |
* Molgrin puts an arm around you
+ |
Firrin> I have to do it, Mol.
+ |
Molgrin> you don't have to pretend it's okay though. not here. not with me.
+ |
* Firrin sniffs again | ||
+ |
Firrin> It has to be okay.
+ |
Molgrin> if this wasn't the case... if you were free to choose... what would you want? for yourself?
+ |
Firrin> I...I don't know
+ |
Firrin> I don't have any... purpose, or prospects
+ |
Firrin> all I have is... what Mr Malassar gives me, and My mother and... and you.

Session
Mol brings Firrin to meet with Norn for a private tour of the Arbor
* Firrin is happy to accompany Mol to the Arbor, partly for maybe? Social? opportunities? But also to see how he's looking >.> (and to get out of the house...)
* Molgrin is wearing the new russet suit and the gold striped waistcoat you picked out for him, and has his hair back in a ponytail - he's looking quite presentable, although I'm sure you could fix his tie and his hair and shoes and and and....
* Norn should be able to schedule a time for Mol to visit when it's not supposed to be particularly busy, likely in the morning or early afternoon.
* Firrin has a deep violet suit today and a pale cream waistcoat with a paisley pattern
Firrin> oh it does look quite well :)
Molgrin> All thanks to you :)
Firrin> do you mind if I just..
* Firrin raises his hands but managed to keep his hands to himself for a moment
Molgrin> oh, please do - I tried to get the cravat the way you showed me, but I'm not sure I did it quite right
Firrin> mostly!
* Firrin can just reorder the knot sightly, bur can't help straightenign your pocket square as well
Firrin> There. Perfect :)
Molgrin> Thank you :D
Molgrin> I like your outfit as well, it's a good colour on you.
Firrin> thank you!
Firrin> shall we go in?
Firrin> or... wherever we are meeting him
Molgrin> Yes, I guess we should.
Norn> (I'm assuming a servant will receive you guys?)
Molgrin> (makes sense - should they escort us to the garden to meet you there?)
Norn> (That'll work. Presumably some random elf servant can do so)
* Norn will be waiting in the garden with refreshments, dressed in more casual (but still very nice) traditional Vanilorran robes for the occasion.
Molgrin> Hello!
Norn> Hello, and welcome again.
* Norn smiles.
* Molgrin waves cheerfully upon spotting you there, as he comes over
Molgrin> It's so different here when it's not full of people!
Firrin> yes, good morning Cano valacirca :)
Norn> I had some luncheon prepared, if you're hungry, or I am assured it can wait if you want to look around first thing.
Molgrin> Oh, well, a little snack might be nice :)
Molgrin> Thank you so much.
Molgrin> I mean, for the lunch, but also for taking the time to show us around. I really appreciate it.
* Molgrin has a sketchbook tucked under his arm
Firrin> That's very kind
Norn> It allows me the opportunity to show off without it being too unseemly, so I feel I should thank you.
Norn> How have you both been finding the season so far? Hopefully not quite so taxing as its first outing.
Molgrin> Oh, it's been quite interesting so far. I feel as though I've met a lot of people already.
Firrin> yes, its been good, but I think it's still early, isn't it?
Firrin> Othe than the masquesarde, I haven't attended any of the larger formal events
Firrin> though, that was quite a lot
* Molgrin nods
* Norn nods.
Molgrin> I'm looking forward to some of the salons and smaller gatherings.
Molgrin> Well, like this one, I suppose :)
* Molgrin helps himself to some of the refreshments
* Firrin will snack politely
Molgrin> Can you tell me a little more about your work here?
Molgrin> I'm so curious about the gardens, is that mainly what you do?
Norn> It has been much of my work and learning in Highmark, yes. The Arbor is something of a testing ground and laboratory for a variety of horticultural endeavors, with the ultimate goal of expanding our, by which I mean the Confederacy's, agricultural production.
Norn> Was that too technical? I find I can get caught up in it.
Molgrin> No, I think I get it. Working on growing new kinds of plants that will produce more food.
* Norn nods.
* Firrin nods
Norn> Or medicine, or timber, or fiber, and so on.
* Molgrin nods
Molgrin> Does Lord Callais work on that sort of thing himself, or is he more hands off?
Norn> If I'm honest, I was pleasantly surprised at how involved both Lords Callais are with this work.
Firrin> oh?
Norn> It would be easy, I think, for it to be an abstraction, but they take a genuine interest and put in actual labor.
Firrin> I woudl have thought they were both quite busy. particularly the councillor
Molgrin> That's interesting.
Norn> I think this sort of work is, if you'll pardon the inevitable pun, quite grounding.
* Molgrin chuckles at that
* Firrin smiles
Norn> And they have a refreshingly...pragmatic outlook on what they do here.
Firrin> how so?
Norn> Vanilorra can be quite hidebound and traditional, but the work here is concerned with more general utility as opposed to simply further refinement of existing practices.
Norn> It's more of a...consolidation of pan-Nerathi knowledge.
Firrin> I suppose that follows with his broader political approach? So I understand, anyway
Firrin> I can't claim to have a deep understanding, but that's his reputation at least
* Norn nods.
Molgrin> If it's not too personal a question, what are they like? as individuals, I mean.
* Norn looks around a little bit just to be sure, then will lean in conspiratorially.
Norn> I can't claim to know Lord Jesseryn very well at all, but Lord Jeremyn has been very welcoming. I would hazard they come off as laconic or cold to a Highmarker, but by Vanilorran standards, they're practically effusive.
* Molgrin nods
Norn> I did mention your work to Lord Jeremyn, and he was interested in seeing some samples, if you'd like.
Firrin> I'm glad, then, if you are working with at least Lord Jeremny so closely!
* Firrin smiles on Mol's behalf
Firrin> oh that's wonderful!
Molgrin> thank you, that's great! I was worried it might be presumptuous of me to expect, but I did bring my sketch book...
Norn> Lord Jesseryn has, um, cultivated a culture of valuing talent wherever it is found.
Norn> Would you like to take a look around? Perhaps something will spark inspiration?
Molgrin> I'd love to!
* Norn smiles and will gesture for you both to follow. He'll take you through the nearby gardens, which are specifically designed for conditions around Highmark, though he points out the more distant ones which mimic other Confederacy biomes for later.
* Molgrin admires the more unusual plants in particular, and will do some quick sketches if not prevented ;)
* Firrin really doens't know anything about plants, complete city boy, maybe knows some common weed names :x
* Molgrin asks questions about some of them as well (but I won't make you make up a bunch of plant nonsense unless you want to ;)
Norn> (heh)
* Norn will happily spout off plant facts.
Norn> (presumably we can come across Euphrastus somewhere in the gardens?)
* Firrin can listen to plant facts politely and try not to betray his ignorance :x
The trio overhears Euphrastus's dismay about some 'records' he's been asked to examine
Euphrastus> (you are wandering by a window when you hear some loud swearing in two languages from inside, only one of which you know. You recognize Euphrastus's voice.)
* Molgrin glances over, curiously
Euphrastus> You call this an invoice?!?
Euphrastus> This is some yokel codswallop right here!
* Lan-home doesn't recognize either voice but goes into servant more 'hear nothing see nothing' mode on instinct
* Firrin doesn't recognize either voice but goes into servant more 'hear nothing see nothing' mode on instinct
* Norn gives the other two an apologetic and somewhat confused look, then will try to go see what's the matter.
* Euphrastus is looking at a mixture of hand-sized yellowish scales and copper-dipped leaves, strung together with a complex mesh of leather cord.
* Euphrastus shakes his head in bafflement mixed with rage.
Norn> Oh, uh, Lord Greae, I believe?
Norn> (Graeae*)
* Euphrastus looks out through the window.
Euphrastus> Oh, Valacirca. I, uhh ... I am deeply sorry, you were not meant to hear that.
Molgrin> Is everything... okay?
* Molgrin asks, a bit warily
Euphrastus> I'm ... well. I'm trying to aid my dear mother with these saddle-receipts from Yondon.
Euphrastus> Apparently they tie these onto their tack when they're travelling on their beasts, as a sort of noisy, incoherent record of tribute?
Euphrastus> I don't know.
Molgrin> Are you sure they aren't pulling your leg?
* Molgrin asks, more curious
Euphrastus> I'm really starting to wonder.
Euphrastus> These are supposedly linked together in a way that produces a record of transactions, and in principle - in principle, mind you - one could learn something from the impressions they leave.
Euphrastus> But I'm afraid all I've learned is that leaves dipped in copper can carry quite a sharp edge.
Norn> I would imagine. Do you need a healer?
Euphrastus> Thank you, I'm fine, I'm sure. More frustrated than truly injured.
Euphrastus> I apologize, you were showing your gardens to your colleagues, and I have interrupted your peace.
Norn> Not at all. Would you care to take a break and join us for a bit?
* Firrin is considering the mess of scales and copper in a way he hopes is inobtrusive
* Euphrastus sets the tangled morass on the table.
Euphrastus> Sure. I could probably use the break. I don't think there's anything here for Mother anyway.
Molgrin> What would your mother need with these? I mean, if there was anything to them.
Norn> She didn't give you any indication as to their interpretation?
Euphrastus> I think the theory is that these records might provide some clue for future investments. They're not written, exactly, so understanding them is a bit of a trick. But perhaps if I could determine whether their creator was attempting some deception ... I don't know.
Euphrastus> Here, let me come outside so we're not talking through a window.
* Euphrastus closes up his work and heads out to meet everyone.
Firrin>
q> I thought they were quite pretty.... if disordered
Molgrin> They might make nice jewelry, if not a viable financial record :)
Firrin> they might just need to be untangled?
Firrin> well, its none of my buisness
* Euphrastus sighs.
Euphrastus> The various linkages between the nodes are meant to indicate individual transactions. But I agree with your assessment, they are hardly a viable means of conducting commerce.
* Firrin folds his arms behind his back and straightens up a little
Euphrastus> At any rate, apologies again. Euphrastus Tinnane of the Graeae, at your service.
Molgrin> Nice to meet you. I'm Molgrin Braalk.
* Molgrin offers his hand to shake.
Firrin> oh, ah, Firrin Malassar
* Firrin gives a polite bow
* Molgrin realizes maybe he was supposed to bow and tries that instead
Norn> Apologies, I should have introduced you all.
Molgrin> I don't think I've ever met a cyclops before. This might seem like a strange question, but... do you have depth perception in your vision?
Euphrastus> Not a strange question at all.
Euphrastus> We do have depth perception but it is quite different from all you binocular folk.
Molgrin> That's fascinating.
Euphrastus> It relies on the relative motion of objects.
Molgrin> I'm something of an artist, so the idea that we see things differently is very interesting to me.
Norn> Mr. Braalk has been taking sketches of some of the gardens.
Euphrastus> Ah, fascinating! Aren't they remarkable? The Arbor is a respite amidst all this urbanity.
Molgrin> It's beautiful.
* Firrin nods his agreement
* Norn smiles.
Norn> And here I thought all you Highmarkers quite valued your urbanity. ;)
Molgrin> Perhaps it allows us to experience the best of both worlds :)
Norn> A worthy and enlightened sentiment, I should think.
Euphrastus> I grew up in Mag Tureah ... gardens were not our strong suit, there.
* Norn tries not to react too strongly to that.
Norn> I'm, ah, given to understand there are fungal groves there that dwarf the Arbor, but I suppose that is quite different.
Firrin> I think they're not commonly a strong suit in Highmark... not outside of the upper tiers, certainly
Molgrin> Sometimes people have little kitchen gardens in the lower tiers, but it's nothing like this.
* Lan-home is now known as Fritz
Norn> I've seen a few. It's remarkable what people are able to grow even in this environment.
* Firrin nods
Molgrin> Well, when you need to survive, lots of things are possible :)
* Norn 's face falls a little.
* Molgrin says cheerfully, but realizes probably he's talking too much about The Poors
Norn> You're not wrong.
Molgrin> Sorry, I didn't meant to make things awkward.
Norn> Not at all.
Euphrastus> And here we see too that practicality need not forgo considerable aesthetics. Useful, but also sublime.
Norn> My experience of survival is wholly different; I was simply reminded.
* Norn nods to Euphrastus.
* Firrin just smiles politely through this
Molgrin> It's just strange to get used to this kind of environment! I mean, it's lovely, but I always feel a little bit like... I've been transplanted, I suppose :)
* Norn smiles at that.
Norn> I truly should introduce you to Lord Jeremyn when the opportunity arises.
Euphrastus> One does, with enough time, become accustomed to it.
Molgrin> I trust you're right about that.
Firrin> :)
* Molgrin gives Firrin's knee a little nudge under the table, nothing too hard, just a little 'hey it's ok' kind of acknowledgement of him being there
Molgrin> (like knee to knee. not grabbing you under the table ;)
Firrin> (are we at a table? I missed that :x)
Norn> (We can be?)
Norn> (We could have sat back down for snacks)
Molgrin> (oh I thought we went back for snacks)
Firrin> (that works)
* Firrin 's expression softens slightly, or maybe just shows a trace of wistfulness or... something, briefly
Norn> Lord Graeae, is there something significant about those receipts that your mother asked you to take a look at them?
Euphrastus> Well, that is an excellent question.
Euphrastus> Not as far as I have been able to discern.
Euphrastus> It's been through so many hands, it's just a muddle.
Molgrin> How do you mean?
* Molgrin asks, curiously
Euphrastus> Well, these various elements, each comes from a specific transaction.
Euphrastus> But unlike, say, a piece of jewelry that has a creator, and then a sequence of owners, one of these objects has many owners, each of whom has handled perhaps only a part of it.
Euphrastus> And then they have been brought together, but ... the totality of it, has no coherence.
Norn> Like reading excerpts from different books and trying to make a readable whole?
Euphrastus> As if each page were written in a different hand.
Molgrin> So... you can detect who the previous owners were?
Euphrastus> Yes, that's right, Mr. Braalk. I can learn something whenever there was some emotion associated with the act, it gets left behind on the object. Not just owners, but really anyone who has a strong association.
Molgrin> Fascinating :o
Euphrastus> So, for instance, if someone had a receipt associated with having been swindled, that would certainly resonate.
Euphrastus> It really is not my specialty, accountancy. That's my mother - she works here serving as a financial advisor.
Euphrastus> My work, in the main, pertains to antiquities.
Norn> Out of curiosity, would that work only if the person knew they had been swindled? I would imagine there wouldn't be such a strong emotion otherwise.
Euphrastus> Exactly so.
Firrin> do they have to have touched it? Or can an impression attach itself without that?
Euphrastus> And, even if they believed they had been swindled, but had not, that would leave an impression.
Euphrastus> Touch is the chief way. But it need not be exact. Something that rests against clothing, or handled with gloves, that would be enough.
Firrin> at the time of the emotion or just any time?
Firrin> I'm sorry if I'm prying.
Euphrastus> No, not at all! It can all be very complicated.
Firrin> but, say, if they later learned they had been swindled, would that carry through?
* Firrin says with a nod of acknowledgement
Euphrastus> So, for instance, once I evaluated a musical automaton, and the impressions, I believe, were really from the hearers, not the creator.
Molgrin> Oh, that's really interesting.
Norn> Oh, that's quite fascinating.
Euphrastus> But simply being in the presence of an object while one is having an emotion is not enough. There must be a connection - as between two belly-scales linked with a leather cord.
Firrin> messy and at time incomprehensible connections?
Euphrastus> Exactly so. And the more connections there have been over an object's history, it can be overwhelming.
Norn> So much like navigating the season, hmm? ;)
* Euphrastus laughs.
Euphrastus> Yes, exactly like wandering through the Sehanine Masquerade hoping that someone will tell you what all the rules are.
Molgrin> Do.. do people do that?
Euphrastus> I have absolutely no idea.
Molgrin> I mean... I didn't realize that was an option, or I'd have asked for the rule book to start with :)
Euphrastus> I think not.
Euphrastus> While I have lived here in Highmark for some time now, it is still a baffling set of customs and norms to manage. Not least when one is the tallest one in the room and everyone is always looking at you.
Euphrastus> I don't know what parties to attend, what events are optional, any of that. And being my parents' only child, and where neither of them went through anything like this.
Molgrin> Oh... yes, I suppose that must be strange.
Euphrastus> Mainly I have learned to be good at pretending at comfort.
Norn> I can imagine that's a valuable skill.
Norn> However unfortunate the necessity.
Euphrastus> What events are any of you planning to attend in the near future?
Molgrin> Well, I hear there are some salons that might be of interest?
* Molgrin glances over to Firrin to see what he says
Firrin> oh, yes...
Firrin> I've heard of some, but as you say, the details can be elusive without the right connections
* Firrin says, frowning slightly
Molgrin> Do you have any suggestions, perhaps?
Firrin> for Salons?
Molgrin> Yes, well, or any other events that might be worthwhile?
* Molgrin asks everyone
Norn> I believe there is one at the [art museum I can't remember if we've named] in a few days.
Molgrin> Oh, that would be very interesting!
Euphrastus> Indeed.
* Molgrin looks over at Firrin
Molgrin> Would you like to go to that?
Firrin> Oh - that would be lovely, yes!
Firrin> Maybe someone there will have an idea about other events as well?
Norn> I think that's how these things are often done. Attendance at one leads to another, and so on.
* Firrin nods
Euphrastus> That makes a certain sense - unless one fails to make connections, in which case I can imagine the season would be very frustrating.
Molgrin> well, that would surely be a great idea. and we've already made connections with you so we're off to a good start :)
Firrin> I should probably ask Lady Paiza... she may have some other ideas...
* Molgrin nods
Firrin> I mean, she may know of other events
Euphrastus> Who is that, Lady Paiza, if I may ask?
Firrin> Oh, ahh, Lady Paiza Dreatus Nykona... My Fiancée :)
Firrin> Hers is a house that much have many interesting relics with strong emotional ties, I'm sure.
Euphrastus> Ah, congratulations on your betrothal, then!
Firrin> Thank you, that's very kind :)
Euphrastus> It seems you have already won this strange game of ours.
Firrin> I've been quite fortunate.
Firrin> My father arranged everything, so it hardly felt like I had to play at all.
* Firrin realizes that maybe sounds like bragging and freezes
Norn> You're lucky to have such an early start, I would think.
Firrin> I men - its his connections, not mine, that's all.
Norn> A good foundation on which to build.
What to do... ugh.
Firrin> [done!]
Euphrastus> Well, let us hope we all find such fertile soil on which to build our gardens.
Firrin> :) Indeed :)
Folks gather for a day at the zoo!
* Norn will be unfailingly punctual, dressed in more typical Highmarker attire for this outing, perhaps a bit awkward with his (new) hat.
* Aleyn will arrive with Saiya and a cluster of smaller kids of various sizes and species ;) He is a human man of probably about 50 years of age, greying hair, tall and thin, with a beaky nose, dressed in casual but well-made clothing with only a few minor holes and stains.
* Saiya wears an orange sundress and a big floppy hat with a flower decorating the brim.
* Fritz is wearing a grey-green suit the kind of expensive that doesn't look Fancy but you can just tell from how it fits that it was made for him rather than just tailored.
* Fritz has gloves, of course, and a quite nice hat
* Molgrin will wear the other of his new suits, the teal one, and has his hair loose for once. No hat.
* Galatea is wearing a white walking dress and deep blue spencer jacket, her hair up and pinned with a floral decoration.
* Galatea waves to the others with a big smile.
Fritz> hello!
Fritz> So good to see everyone... I think everyone?
Fritz> is Mr. Raveni here?
* Norn looks about for him.
Aleyn> I'm just here as a nominal chaperone, don't mind me. I trust that you're mostly capable of taking care of yourselves.
* Raveni walks up quickly, seeing that he's late
* Norn smiles.
Norn> Ah, you made it. Good to see you, Raveni.
Raveni> Hello! Apologies for my lateness, I got a little bit side-tracked looking for a suitable hat
* Galatea will try not to geek out about one of the Thunderbolts being here.
Raveni> Good to see you too, Norn
Galatea> I think you picked a quite lovely one. :)
* Raveni smiles nervously
* Raveni has Mshauri with him
* Saiya is in that awkward position of 'ugh my DAD' and also realizing that to other people her dad is cool ;)
Galatea> Was there anything in particular people were interested in seeing first?
Saiya> Oh, we HAVE to see the rust monster! it's so fun when they feed it :D
Saiya> If you're lucky you get to toss in, oh, old bits of metal and cans and just EVERYTHING!
Galatea> Oh, that does sound fun!
* Lanpc is now known as Mshauri
Saiya> They have to keep it in a glass enclosure so it doesn't just eat its way OUT :o
Fritz> oh yes, that is always fun!
* Raveni stays quiet. They're just happy to be here
* Mshauri is being a Totally Norma Dog, mmmhmmm
* Mshauri has a litle vest on to look Official though
Fritz> I think that is over towards the far side of the zoo... or it was last time I was here but tbhat was some time ago now
Aleyn> You did always like the little vending machine where you put in a coin and get some iron filings to throw to it :)
Fritz> we could make our way around though?
Saiya> Da-aaaad.
* Saiya rolls her eyes.
Fritz> Oh I loved that! ^-^
* Galatea grins.
Galatea> Well, if it's on the far side, then it will take us past plenty of other things to see.
Fritz> One time my brother got in trouble because he brought a sword from home to feed it :x
* Saiya giggles
Norn> I hope it wasn't an important one.
Fritz> I was very young so I don't remember it
Fritz> and no, I don't think so!
Fritz> they always seemed to have so *many
* swords, btu that's Sentinels I suppose
* Galatea nods.
Molgrin> I've never been before, so I'm interested to see just about anything :)
Galatea> Shall we?
Fritz> oh yes of course :D
* Molgrin has a sketchbook with him
Fritz> This way I believe!
* Fritz will head towards where he thinks the display is (but I will let other poeple describe exhibits)
* Saiya will walk ahead so she isn't forced to stay too close to her father ;)
* Raveni falls in near to Norn
Raveni> So, Norn, what are you most looking forward to seeing?
* Saiya has a slight limp which probably is more noticable as we walk longer distances, though she mainly tries to ignore it.
* Aleyn mostly lets the younger kids run around and tire themselves out, while keeping a distant eye on the older ones
* Mshauri is keeping an Eye on Norn >.>
Norn> I believe they have an *olvaran*, and I've never actually seen one in real life.
Norn> Though I believe here they call them 'shambling mounds'.
* Fritz will offer Saiya his arm
* Saiya accepts it with a shy smile
Saiya> thank you :3
* Galatea smirks and will waggle her eyebrows at Saiya when Fritz isn't looking.
* Saiya makes a 'shut UP' kind of face back at her :D
Molgrin> Is it a kind of plant?
* Molgrin asks Norn
Raveni> I can't say I'm surprised that you're excited to see one, given your predilection for plants
Fritz> Hmm?
Norn> An ambulatory one. They're not particularly common anywhere, but there are some in the more remote parts of my homeland.
* Fritz loks back at his cousin to see what that was about, but just catches her smiling, I'm sure
* Galatea is a picture of beatific innocence.
Fritz> Oh well - I don't remember this being here - i hope I'm not leading us astray - you'll have to tell me if so, Miss Harrowden!
* Fritz says pulling up to a large enclosure
Saiya> Well, I do think you're DEFINITELY on the right track :D
* Molgrin looks around curiously at the sights, but will kind of try to subtly hang back to talk to Aleyn when he gets a chance.
* Saiya stands on tiptoe as she peers into the enclosure, which is full of large boulders and a pond and other types of 'natural' environmental features.
Saiya> oh! it's over there! a BULETTE :D It almost blends right in with the rocks.
* Galatea peers curiously.
Galatea> Isn't it able to burrow out? I thought that was a thing they could do.
Aleyn> I think they have a magical barrier underneath the exhibit.
Norn> There's an explanation on the plaque.
Aleyn> At least, I sure hope they do.
* Norn points.
* Raveni walks along the enclosure wall to get a better view
Galatea> Oh, heh, of course.
* Galatea goes to read it.
Aleyn> Warryn used to have a bulette... I mean as much as one can 'have' a bulette. they're not really great pets.
* Mshauri sniffs but can't see over the barrier :(
Fritz> It must be sleeping? basking?
* Raveni nudges Mshauri and tilts his head toward a bench placed conveniently near the barrier
* Mshauri hops up, hoping it doesn't deter from his goodboi impression, and ways his fluffy tail
Galatea> That's right! They mention it in The Alabaster Pillar.
Galatea> >.>
Aleyn> Oh, is that one of the novels? I admit I kind of lost track of all of them.
Galatea> Ah, yes, one of the, um, unauthorized ones.
* Aleyn chuckles
Fritz> I think its is some of the authorized ones too
Aleyn> Well, those are more fun anyway.
* Raveni has become distracted by another enclosure housing dire wolves
Raveni> Mshauri, look
* Saiya rolls her eyes slightly at her dad being embarrassing
* Mshauri comes over and stands by Raveni, but the hackles go right up
Mshauri> <m> oh those assholes....
Raveni> What have you got against them, again?
Fritz> is that quite intrusive?
* Raveni asks quietly
Fritz> The books I mean - or do they just sort of carry on without bothering you too much?
Aleyn> Well, they bear so little connection to reality, other than some similarities of names, I just always thought they were entertaining.
Mshauri> <m> Ugh, it's complicated. They're just bullies and snobs, okay?
Norn> Everything all right?
* Norn will ask, walking over.
Aleyn> Kallista used to read them out loud sometimes during boring travel ;p
Mshauri> >.> grr.
* Galatea is now known as Narrator
Fritz> Well, that's good!
Narrator> The dire wolves stare back nonchalantly.
* Narrator is now known as Galatea
Fritz> I'm glad they're entertaining for everyone then :D
Fritz> ohhh, what's over there?
* Fritz says, noticing Norn and Raveni have drifted off too look at something else
* Saiya wanders over with Fritz to see what's going on over there
* Galatea will follow the crowd.
Saiya> Wolves?
* Saiya says, answering Fritz's question
Raveni> Direwolves
Fritz> oh is it the dire wolves? :D
Raveni> I just think they're interesting beasts
Fritz> Do they have pups this year?
Fritz> I saw them once and they were just unbelievably adorable :3
* Mshauri manages to roll his eyes
* Galatea frowns.
Raveni> I thought I saw one but they went behind-- oh, there! Over to the right of that structure
Raveni> looks like they had a litter earlier this year. Amazing how fast they grow
Galatea> Isn't it kind of strange they're in here?
Fritz> where? :D
* Fritz looks where Raveni indicated
Fritz> :3
Raveni> They're playing over there, I keep seeing a couple of them darting in and out of there
Raveni> (to Galatea) Strange?
Fritz> they're so adorable!
Galatea> You know what, I'm getting them confused.
Galatea> I was thinking of wargs.
Galatea> *That* would be barbaric.
Galatea> And the puppies *are* cute.
Norn> I can't imagine how much they must bring in to feed all these.
Saiya> They're just like big dogs, almost :3
* Raveni pats Mshauri's raised hackles down flat
Raveni> at least until you go to pet them, anyway
* Mshauri huffs
* Raveni laughs
Fritz> Oh yes, you can practically see their teeth all the way from here :o
Raveni> It's ok Mshauri, you're a better companion than any direwolf
Norn> The Ferka keep some for hunting.
Norn> They have a special rapport. It's really something to see.
Raveni> The Ferka?
Norn> The other main shifter House of Vanilorra, and our regional neighbors. I've spent a good deal of time in Voronda Ferka's court over the years.
Raveni> Ah, I'm afraid I'm still catching up on all of the various houses
* Raveni is embarrassed
Galatea> Oh, well, that's nothing to be ashamed of. There are *quite* a lot of them.
Saiya> So many!
* Saiya agrees
Saiya> And somehow they keep making MORE?
Saiya> Well, I mean, of course they ought to, for the goblinoids and so forth. It's only fair :p But it DOES mean more names to remember.
Norn> Ours included, at least as far as the Confederacy is concerned. :)
* Norn nods.
Norn> Shall we press on?
* Saiya nods
Saiya> Yes, let's keep going, so we get to see as MUCH as we can :D
Raveni> Sure
Fritz> oh yes let's :D
Mol hangs back to ask Aleyn for some advice
* Molgrin will sort of hang back and try to get a word in with Aleyn, while the others are occupied
Molgrin> Excuse me, sir - Dovah Aelindar suggested maybe I might benefit from talking to you.
* Aleyn (~Curtana_n@d24-57-67-2.home.cgocable.net) has joined #awrr3
Aleyn> Me? What's Brenn been saying? :)
Molgrin> Oh, nothing bad, certainly! He mentioned you might have some ... words of wisdom, or a blessing.
Aleyn> Ah... I see.
* Aleyn smiles, guessing that means 'romantic problems'
Aleyn> Well, a blessing is easy enough. Words of wisdom, you might have to give me a clue what it's about.
* Molgrin smiles back, but looks a bit nervous.
Molgrin> A... a friend of mine is in a difficult situation. He's betrothed to a young lady but he doesn't seem quite happy with the match. I don't know, really, only... I worry that he's gotten in over his head and is stuck now.
Aleyn> Okay.. is this a friend or a 'friend'?
Molgrin> Oh, uh, a friend. Just a ... normal friend. Yes.
* Aleyn nods and disbelieves him
Aleyn> Well, without knowing your friend, I would probably counsel that no matter how bad a situation seems, there's always a way out. It might not be a pleasant or easy way out, but nothing is so permanent that you can't extricate yourself.
* Molgrin nods, listening attentively
Molgrin> I feel much the same, but it's a matter of getting him to believe that.
Aleyn> Hm, I see.
Molgrin> He's ... he's like me, he comes from a more modest background, and I think this whole high society thing is ... it's difficult.
* Aleyn nods wholeheartedly at that
Aleyn> It really is a different world, and not necessarily a better one in many ways.
Aleyn> It certainly has its advantages, and many good people, if you can find them. But ...
* Aleyn weighs how much he wants to say to this random stranger kid
Aleyn> But when you've known how far this is from what most people ever experience, it's hard to be completely comfortable with it. Does that make sense?
* Molgrin nods slowly, absorbing that
Aleyn> Anyway - it might be easier if your friend came to talk to me directly, so I could get a sense of his situation and what's bothering him about the match. Feel free to let him know he can contact me - you can often find me at the temple of Sehanine, or else at home [and he'll give his address]
Molgrin> I will mention that to him, thank you sir.
Aleyn> No sir required, just Aleyn. or Mr. Harrowden if you really must.
Molgrin> Thank you, Mr. Harrowden. I'll be sure to pass that along to him.
Aleyn> As for the blessing, hm. May Sehanine guide your path, however winding it might be, to reach your desired goal.
Aleyn> Kind of all-purpose but the older blessings endure for a reason.
Molgrin> Thank you again. I really appreciate it.
Aleyn> No trouble at all. Now if you'll excuse me, I should probably make sure my youngest isn't climbing into the drake enclosure :)
Raveni has an unexpected reaction to the Fang Titan Drake
* Raveni freezes as they walk by another enclosure where an enormous bipedal lizard has just emerged from the trees
* Norn will let folks move ahead for a moment to check on Raveni.
Fritz> the Drakes :D
Norn> (q) Are you all right? I know you said sometimes your mark can cause trouble.
Galatea> Oh my!
Fritz> Oh my brothers *loves* all the drakes
* Galatea marvels up at the drake.
Fritz> well, loved, Well I'm sure Monty still does
Raveni> Um. What in the world is *that?*
* Raveni black spots are slowly appearing on his face and neck
Fritz> I can't believe people ride them! how in the world to they tame them?
Raveni> I'm alright Norn, just. Gods. I've never seen something like that before
* Mshauri leans against Raveni and noses at his hand
Galatea> It says...Fang Titan Drake. Quite a name.
* Norn gives Raveni a fortifying nod.
Fritz> well look at the teeth! The dire wolves were nothing!
Molgrin> Ooh, very scary sounding!
Molgrin> (ww)
Saiya> Ooh, very scary sounding!
Fritz> does the plaque say where this one is from?
Fritz> I belioeve the Akhasic delegation gave some to the managerie as gifts after the exhibition!
Galatea> Northern Morro, though there are similar ones in the Sword Coast, it says.
Fritz> they weren't able to keep thre thunderdrakes though, I'm so say I missed them
Fritz> (sad)
Galatea> I think the map post said there's a whole Ahkasic section they donated.
Fritz> ooooh, do you think they ride them in combat? :D
Fritz> oooh!
* Saiya brightens at that
* Raveni is still staring, wide-eyed at the beast. Their tail has appeared and golden fur has sprouted along their neck, sticking straight up
Fritz> is it on the way to the rust monster?
Galatea> If we take a scenic route.
Galatea> :)
Saiya> I've been to Ahkas, it's so FASCINATING there :D My father has relatives there who we've visited and other trips...
* Norn will stand between Raveni and the others, and put a hand on his arm to try to steady him.
* Mshauri nudges Raveni again
Mshauri> psst, come on, you're breakign out
Mshauri> uhh. woof!
* Mshauri eyes Norn
Galatea> You've been to Ahkas! You have to tell us everything!
Fritz> My brother is posted there!
Galatea> Right, but neither of us have *been* there.
Saiya> Oh, well, the BEST thing in Ahkas is the market where they have all the spices and odd fruits and vegetables and things like that. It smells AMAZING!
Saiya> They have these things that are kind of like a plum but they're not exactly, I don't know, but they're delicious :D
* Raveni gasps as one leg abruptly Shifts and nearly falls
Raveni> (quietly) fuck fuck fuck *ow*
* Raveni grabs Norn's hand to stay upright
Norn> (q) It's all right. You're safe, you're among friends.
Mshauri> Come on get him away from here >.>
* Norn squeezes Raveni's hand and will try to maneuver him aside.
Norn> (q) Can you walk all right?
* Mshauri can provide some extra physical support
Fritz> Where in Akhas is your family from?
* Fritz asks saiya, oblivious
* Raveni staggers away with their help
* Mshauri can guide them toa bench out of sight of the big scary dino
* Raveni collapses on the bench, kind of wanting to launch himself into the drake enclosure from how mortified he is
* Mshauri curls up on Rveni's feet and will glare at any passers by who look too closely
* Raveni covers his face with his clawed hands
Raveni> Someone just kill me now
Raveni> Please
Norn> That sounds extreme.
Norn> I don't believe anyone noticed.
Norn> And, if they had, it's nothing to be ashamed of.
Raveni> I have no idea how we got out of there without anyone noti-- FUCK. You heard Mshauri. I take it back, I don't want to die. My grandfather is going to kill us both.
Norn> Whyever would he do that?
Mshauri> wooooof >.>
Mshauri> he didn't hear shit, right?
* Mshauri glares at Norn
Norn> Did someone say something?
* Raveni gently shoves Mshauri with one foot
Raveni> Please don't threaten the person currently holding the means to our collective demise.
* Raveni 's shift is slowly reversing in his morbid amusement at the situation
Norn> Is it really so serious as that?
* Norn looks genuinely concerned.
Raveni> Quite possibly. Have you ever met my grandfather before? The man is obsessed with appearances.
Mshauri> pfft >.>
Raveni> His threats regarding the truth about Mshauri needing to nursemaid me around were rather eloquently delivered.
Norn> I haven't had the...pleasure.
* Norn scowls.
Norn> That is quite...dishonorable behavior.
Norn> (Which is quite a thing to say, for a Vanilorran)
Raveni> I... Thank you, Norn. I am very grateful to you
* Raveni realizes he is still holding Norn's hand and drops it like it burned him
Raveni> I'm sorry you had to see me in such a state.
* Norn will take his hand back reservedly.
Norn> As I said before, I can understand not being fully in control of one's, ah, countenance.
Norn> There's no need to apologize.
* Raveni is blushing profusely under a fresh wave of fur covering his face
Mshauri> its just *fur*
Mshauri> nothing wrong with fur >.>
Norn> Some might consider it quite flattering.
Norn> I should consider it a worthy price to be paid, but I wouldn't like to inflict reciprocal harm. Are you well enough to rejoin the others?
* Raveni tests his footing on his no longer-mismatched legs
Mshauri> I'll keep a nose out for more drakes
Raveni> Yes, I think so. The tail is still present but I can disguise that easy enough
Mshauri> but you gotta listen okay? >.>
Raveni> (to Mshauri) Thank you, my friend. I think I'll be alright to walk by them from here, it was just the shock of seeing that first one that set me off.
Mshauri> well. I'll keep a nose out anyway >.>
* Raveni looks up to see the others circling back in their direction
Raveni> Oh dear, they've noticed our absence.
Meanwhile, Fritz, Saiya, and Galatea chat obliviously
Fritz>
Fritz> Where in Akhas is your family from?
Fritz>
* Fritz asks Saiya, oblivious
Saiya> Oshuar. My grandmother's from there!
* Galatea (~Galatea@98.97.165.61) has joined #awrr3
Fritz> oh - thats' more south I think?
Fritz> Monty was posted in Ebemar but now he's in Yeshual I think?
* Saiya nods
Fritz> is it like here were they are all very different?
Saiya> Well, I think it's not quite as different as here, but maybe I just didn't notice all the differences between each place because I was so busy noticing how different it was from here. Does that make ANY sense?
Fritz> I think so!
* Galatea nods.
Fritz> I'd love to travel more and see it!
Galatea> Likewise. I basically haven't been anywhere but here and home.
Fritz> we had been talkign aout a visit before he transferred with all this gate whatever it is, but now he says its too unstable
Saiya> Oh, it's WONDERFUL, if you do get the chance, you must take it :D I know it's a bit complicated right now though....
* Galatea nods.
Fritz> there must be so many scholars coming to study the gate! It sounds so interesting. I'd love to just touch it jjust briefly! Probably that woudl be foolish though
Saiya> Why would that be?
Galatea> Just think, something Ioun did all that time ago echoing back now. What a working it must be.
Fritz> yes! She *must
* be plannig to send a delegation, do you think?
Saiya> Would you explode or something if you touched it? :D
Fritz> anyway I've never seen even the crystal fragments but they must have such an interesting structure and properties
Fritz> I don't know!
Saiya> well I shouldn't like for you to explode so please don't ;p
Fritz> maybe it woud be too much and it would just completely fry my brain if its so complex!
Galatea> It's a gateway to worlds beyond. I can't imagine what all you could learn from it, Fritz.
Fritz> right? It ight be worth it!
Galatea> Well, let's hope not that. ;)
Fritz> oh but, I'm being silly!
Fritz> no, I can learn about the properties of things if I touch them see? Like that glass fake!
* Saiya nods
Saiya> Well, I'm sure something like that would be just FULL of properties.
* Galatea nods.
Galatea> Fritz has a much more informative ability. :)
Fritz> yes :D
Fritz> it can be a lot though
* Fritz fiddles with his gloves
Saiya> What happens when you touch people?
* Saiya asks curiously
* Galatea does her best not to smirk.
* Fritz goes somewhat red
Fritz> Oh that can be very awkward, i try not to!
Saiya> oh dear, I'm sorry! I shouldn't have asked!
Fritz> oh no, I'm the one who brought it up, though, I probably should be better at just keeping it to myself
Galatea> Should you? It's not some Sentinel secret thing.
Fritz> Shoudl we move on? or - where did everyone welse go?
Saiya> PLEASE though, don't feel embarrassed on my account! I am always putting my foot in my mouth.
Fritz> oh, no, that's true
Fritz> I mean - about it not being a secret!
Fritz> I don't think you said anything untoward Miss Harrowden
Fritz> it *is* a little embarrassing, but it isn't your fault
Fritz> you know I was thinking it will be so nice to have people come to my house for a dinner so I won't have to feel so awkward about dining!
* Galatea smiles at that.
Saiya> Well I know asking about people's marks is not really DONE so I should have just kept my lips sealed, but I was terribly curious. Don't mind me though, please, let's carry on with the sightseeing :D
Fritz> oh yes, I do want to see the rust monster :D
Galatea> Yes! Ah, and I think there's Cano Valacirca and Colmacil Meorista right there.
Fritz> oh there they are!
* Galatea will happily lead the way towards the rust monster.
The parties reconvene
* Fritz waves
Galatea> We were just about to head on towards the rust monster, if you wanted to join. :)
* Molgrin has settled down to sketch somewhere, waiting for the others to gather again
Fritz> Oh there hyou are - sorry, we just got caught up chatting, We didn't mean to split off like that!
Fritz> but yes, it really is quite fun!
Raveni> I'd be delighted.
Raveni> Lord Valacirca?
Norn> Of course. Lead on. :)
Galatea> Mr. Braalk?
* Raveni pats Mshauri's head unobtrusively in thanks
Galatea> Just want to make sure we don't leave anyone behind. :)
Molgrin> Yes, sorry! I got absorbed in my sketch :) but I can go whenever you're ready!
* Mshauri licks raveni's hand
* Galatea can lead folks onwards and will ask Mol about his sketch along the way.
Raveni> (to Molgrin) What were you sketching, if I might ask?
Fritz> oh yes, can you show us? It's alright if not, I know how arttists can be
Molgrin> Oh, well, I mostly do insects and plants. There was a moth that landed on the morning glory vines there and I wanted to scribble it down before it flew away.
* Molgrin shows you the sketch quite happily
Molgrin> It probably seems a bit silly to be sketching a moth when there are so many other interesting creatures around...
Fritz> oh well, the muse does as it will, that's what Mother always says!
* Molgrin smiles at that
* Molgrin 's sketch is quite good
Raveni> Moths are interesting! They don't have the same factor of awe as a drake or a bulette but that doesn't mean they are inferior
Fritz> I don't know that I've ever seen a moth look so lovely!
Molgrin> thank you! I do really think insects are interesting, but it's not often an opinion that others share.
* Molgrin takes his sketchbook back and in doing so accidentally turns a page where there's a sketch that is definitely not of an insect, but a young tiefling man.
* Molgrin hastily closes the book and hopes no one saw that
* Raveni definitely saw that. He hides a grin and carefully looks at the exhibits they are passing
Fritz> you know they can be!
* Fritz says, not having said that
Fritz> some of them create some very interesting structures with remarkable properties!
Galatea> Oh, what was that one?
* Galatea saw a bit, and wants to see more. ;)
Raveni> Insects bind the world together. No one seems to want to acknowledge that we owe so much to them.
Raveni> They're magical, in a way.
Norn> Well said.
Molgrin> Oh, um... that was just something I was experimenting with, I don't usually do portraits, but I thought I should branch out...
* Molgrin says to Galatea, a bit embarrassed
Galatea> It's always good to expand one's skills. Did someone sit for you?
Molgrin> Because, you know, most people don't usually commission art of bugs, but they might commission a portrait.
* Molgrin shakes his head
* Raveni tries to catch Norn'
Molgrin> No, it's just a friend. I mean, not a formal sitting.... just a little doodle from memory.
* Fritz nods to Raveni and then realizes everyone else is talking about something else
* Raveni tries to catch Norn's eye, still suppressing a laugh
Galatea> Oh, that's nice. You should give it to them when you're done. A little thanks for inspiration. :)
Molgrin> Oh, well, I don't know that it's ... good enough for that.
* Molgrin says, a bit embarrassed
Galatea> It's the thought that counts, right? However cliche my phrasing.
Fritz> Yes its true though! It shows hyou thought of your friend :)
Raveni> I'd be terribly flattered if someone gifted me art of myself, regardless of skill. It shows you care.
Molgrin> Well, maybe.
Fritz> well I suppose unless you don't want them to know :o
Raveni> Why wouldn't you want them to know?
Fritz> I hope we haven't exposed any secrets ^-^
Galatea> Oooh, yes, I suppose there is that.
Fritz> But we are all friends and shall be very kind if so, won't we? :D
* Galatea fake pouts, but nods.
* Raveni is oblivious to the romantic connotations and thinks it's just a sweet gift
Galatea> Of course. We shouldn't like to be discourteous.
Fritz> so just tell us and well shall leave it be ^-^
Fritz> I know how it can be when people see what they aren't meant to, ugh!
Molgrin> It's not that I would not want him to know, but... I would want it to be done in a proper way, not just a sketch. So maybe if I work on it more and finish it properly, then I'll see :)
* Molgrin says, a bit flushed
Saiya> Well I'm sure if you do, he'll be quite flattered. I know I would be!
Fritz> yes, that sounds like a lovely gift :)
Molgrin> Maybe I ought to try drawing all of you, so I get more practice :)
Fritz> oh that could be quite fun!
Fritz> Oh that reminds me I was meant to tell you about salons!
Molgrin> . o O (and so there isn't just one sketch of Firrin in among all the flowers and bugs)
Raveni> I'd be happy to
* Raveni says nervously
Molgrin> oh, yes, I'd love to hear more. I think I heard there was something coming up at the art gallery?
Fritz> oh yes!
* Fritz can list off a bunch of different Salons, some of which art arts and a few more sciencey/technical
Fritz> there's some political ones as well but I'm not so informed about them ad to know what might me more or less advisable but I can give you the names if you like!
* Raveni slows as they pass an exhibit housing three cheetahs
Raveni> Hold a moment, if you would?
Raveni> I didn't realize they kept these here.
Galatea> Hmm? Oh, they're so pretty.
Fritz> hmm?
Fritz> oh look at them! :D
* Norn 's focus will be on Raveni.
* Raveni walks up to the glass and places one hand on it
Mshauri> uh... wooof -_-
* Mshauri nudges him
* Raveni chirps
Fritz> oh they looks at us :D
* Saiya squeals excitedly at the adorable creatures
* Raveni chirps again, calling them to come up
Fritz> are they listenign to you? :o
Raveni> Yes. I can speak to them, a little.
* Fritz glances surreptitiously at the other shifters
Fritz> oh that's wonderful! What do they have to say? :D
* Galatea is still entranced by the cheetahs.
Raveni> There we go! Hello, boys.
Fritz> I hope you are telling them they are so beautifuland elegant!
* Raveni laughs as one of the cheetahs rears onto his hind legs right in front of them and bonks the glass with his head
Fritz> :o
* Galatea smiles at that.
Raveni> It's not that complex a communication--it's not actually a language. Feelings, emotions, simple concepts; that's all we can really convey.
Raveni> They're still animals. These fine gentlemen seem happy and healthy, I'm glad.
Norn> That's good to know.
Fritz> oh yes, I'd be quite distressed f they were poorly treated!
Raveni> I wish we could greet them without the glass in the way. It's probably safer like this for you all though.
Norn> Best not to chance a sudden mood shift. :)
* Saiya giggles at that
Raveni> I've never interacted with them around anyone other than--well, anyone who wasn't of my particular heritage.
Raveni> Let's go see your rust monster. Thank you for indulging me.
Galatea> Not at all. That was amazing!
* Raveni blushes and bobs a small bow to her
Mshauri> yes, thank *you*, that was amazing!
Mshauri> (ww)
Fritz> yes, thank *you*, that was amazing!
Mol and Frrin escae a boring Salon
* Molgrin dragged you to this salon about botany but it's too boring even for him, so we are chatting discreetly in the back of the room instead of paying attention.
Firrin> I'm sorry I can't even follow what they are talkign about -_-
Molgrin> oh I know, it's dreadful. I don't want to leave because it seems rude but honestly it's confusing for me too.
Molgrin> how about instead I tell you about the zoo the other day :)
Firrin> are they even talking about plants? it sounds more like arguing over names
Firrin> oh, yes! how was that?
Firrin> and I think we could leave, look we woudln't be the first >.>
Molgrin> It was fun! I wasn't really sure what to expect but it seems like they do a good job taking care of the creatures there, and it was an opportunity to see things I haven't seen before.
Molgrin> I didn't know a rust monster was kind of like a huge bug!
Firrin> ...me either
Firrin> that must have been a pleasant surprise :)
Firrin> did hyou draw it/
Molgrin> I did :D
Molgrin> they had things you could feed to it, it was fascinating
Firrin> you'll have to show me
* Molgrin nods
* Molgrin gets out his sketch book and will page throught it to find the rust monster drawing
Molgrin> there, that's it
Firrin> huh - how big is it?
Molgrin> hmm I guess sort of the size of a pony?
Molgrin> or a big dog?
Firrin> that's..
* Firrin looks at the drawing again
Firrin> well I'm glad its enclosed!
* Molgrin holds his hand out around waist high or a bit higher
Firrin> you really made it look alove
Firrin> (alive)
Molgrin> Yes, me too. It seems quite docile though, I don't think it's very aggressive.
Molgrin> maybe this one is just well-fed.
* Firrin nods
Molgrin> Miss Harrowden's father was there as a chaperone, he was quite nice - down to earth, even though he's famous and so on.
Firrin> oh - one of the Thunderbolts, right?
Molgrin> Yes, Aleyn Harrowden. He says to call him Aleyn, or Mr. Harrowden if I insist.
Molgrin> I did insist >.>
Firrin> ...I thought they all had titles after Nachtur? :o
Firrin> I would insist too, goodness :x
Molgrin> I suppose he must, but I don't know that he bothers to use it? I have no idea really.
Firrin> well, maybe not, because that woudl make Miss Harrowden... Lady saiya? Wouldn't it?
Firrin> though I'm not sure how the nachtur titles work
Molgrin> I think he's the first person I've met here - other than you, obviously - who isn't *from
* this background. Well, I suppose Dovah Aelindar's wife, too, and maybe a few others, but he's the first one who seems really quite... ordinary, you know. not in a bad way. in a way that you think, oh, this person could be someone who is from our neighbourhood, or who works at a shop.
Molgrin> you know?
Firrin> hmm.
Firrin> ...is Doven Aelindar's wife not ordinary?
Molgrin> oh, hm.
* Molgrin consider that.
Molgrin> I think she grew up in a cult or something? I remember hearing that.
Molgrin> I mean she's very friendly and so on, but not exactly 'ordinary'.
Firrin> I think they mention it a lot in the novels but I never was sure how reliable they are
Firrin> hmm
Molgrin> Well, I haven't had the nerve to ask if it's true....
Firrin> oh yes, it woudl be quite rude I would think :x
* Molgrin nods
Firrin> though I'm sure they've all had to endure more rudeness than that
Molgrin> Perhaps you're right, but I don't think I should contribute more to it.
Molgrin> At least, not while I'm relying on them for lodging and introductions and so on.
Firrin> I wonder how you preserve any ordinaryness under such circumstances
* Firrin nods
Molgrin> He probably isn't really as ordinary as he seems. I mean I assume he's quite powerful. But he doesn't put on airs or anything.
Firrin> that's reassuring... though I suppose that being a famous adventurer means to some extent that hyou can behave how you like
Molgrin> Anyway, Dovah Aelindar had recommended I ought to talk to him, so I gathered up my courage and did so.
Firrin> oh, talk to him about what?
Molgrin> well... I asked Dovah Aelindar about ... whether he knew anything about your intended's family, or anything like that. And about things like how to deal with a match that one wasn't sure about... I hope it isn't too intrusive of me.
* Firrin is surprised and maybe a little anxious, but cover it quickly with a :)
Firrin> It was kind of you to think of me.
Molgrin> He did have some wise advice - at least, it seemed so to me.
Firrin> oh?
* Firrin asks with polite interest
Molgrin> Dovah Aelindar said that he thought it would be good to have a frank conversation with your betrothed about what your expectations are from the match - what she wants and what you want, that is.
Molgrin> And ... Mr. Harrowden said that no matter what the situation was, there was always a way out, even if it wasn't easy. But he also said that he would like to talk to you directly, if you were willing. He said it would be easier to give advice that way.
Firrin> well... thank you.
Molgrin> I am sorry if I overstepped, I only .... worry about you, and I don't really know all the intricacies of high society, so I thought I ought to ask people who did know what was expected here, rather than just telling you what I think, which might be entirely wrong.
Firrin> and.... what do you think?
* Molgrin looks at you with hopeful eyes
* Firrin asks with some amount of reservation
Molgrin> I think... you deserve to be happy. I don't think that you seem happy with this arrangement, and so if there's a way you could be happy with it.... then that would be good. but if you cannot be happy with it, then I think you shouldn't go ahead with it. Even if it's awkward or difficult. You shouldn't sacrifice your happiness and youth and future to this cause.
* Molgrin says a bit awkwardly, but trying to keep meeting your eyes
Firrin> ...
Firrin> that's very.... I appreciate that, really. But there're thing that must come before happiness
* Molgrin looks down
Molgrin> I do understand. So maybe what Dovah Aelindar said is best - that you might talk to her and find some common ground, and then it wouldn't be so ... so difficult.
Firrin> I appreciate that. It seems very sound.
* Molgrin nods
Firrin> maybe I will have some chance, but I'm not sure that I can risk it.
* Molgrin looks up and tries to smile for you.
Molgrin> Listen, let's get out of here - this talk isn't getting any more interesting and I'm tired of listening to them drone on.
Firrin> Yes, let's.
Firrin> it a waste of good company.
Molgrin> I tell you what - I'll take you to one of the most exclusive dining establishments in the city. My treat :)
Firrin> how..?
Firrin> those kinds of places don't just allow anyone to walk in :o
Molgrin> Oh, I think this one will.
* Molgrin says with a more convincing smile.
Molgrin> After all, I am related to the chef ;)
Molgrin> And I know she'd like to see you again too.
Firrin> well... alright...
Mol brings Firrin to his Mothers place for dinner and conversation that doesn't go quite how he'd hoped
* Molgrin leads the way to Southwall, to his mother's house.
Molgrin> (I'm sure you can figure out before too long where we are probably heading ;)
* Firrin is pretty quiet and gets quieter as we pass through the old neighborhood
* Molgrin opens the door and heads into his family home, where his mother and some younger siblings are working in the kitchen to make dinner.
* Nary (~Curtana_n@d24-57-67-2.home.cgocable.net) has joined #awrr
* Nary is now known as Nangha
* Nangha is a stout middle-aged orc lady with a nose ring and some bracelets that jingle as she works in the kitchen.
Molgrin> Mom? I hope it's okay, but I came home for dinner - and I brought a friend :)
Nangha> Well of course it's okay - any time you like, ki
* Nangha says with a big smile, coming over to hug him.
Nangha> And who is your friend?
* Firrin takes a deep breath
Firrin> Hello Mrs Braalk. It's been a long time.
* Nangha looks you up and down and then breaks into a cheerful laugh
Nangha> Firrin, is it? You've grown up so much!
* Nangha gives you a hug too.
* Firrin submits to hugs
* Nangha is quite tall and sturdy, you are thoroughly enveloped by her hugs ;)
Nangha> You look so handsome - such lovely clothes, both of you :D
* Firrin smiles at that
Molgrin> Firrin helped pick them out!
Firrin> yes well. You wear them very well.
Nangha> Oh, very nice, very nice :D
Nangha> And how is your mother?
* Nangha asks Firrin
Firrin> oh, ah...
Firrin> I'm afraid she is not very well these days.
Nangha> Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.
Nangha> Is she staying here in Highmark somewhere?
Firrin> Yes. I.. or, my f.. She's in a care facility, where attendants can best see to her needs.
* Firrin finally gets it out after a few awkward false starts
* Nangha nods sympathetically.
Nangha> Maybe I can pay her a visit, if that wouldn't be too much trouble.
* Firrin looks awkward and uncertain
Firrin> I can... see if that's possible.
Nangha> But if it isn't possible, then just accept my sympathies, and I hope she is comfortable.
* Nangha says, patting you on the shoulder
Firrin> thank you.
Nangha> Now, you are staying for dinner, yes? We can always make room for a few more at our table, so don't worry about a thing. I'm making stew with dumplings.
Firrin> that sounds wonderful. :)
Molgrin> (after dinner...)
* Firrin will be polite but possibly somewhat wirthdrawn over dinner
* Molgrin will see if he can commandeer his old bedroom from whichever of his younger siblings took it over and bring you up there so we can reminisce about old times and so on. It's a small room in the attic, with a little window that probably when we were kids we could climb out of and onto the roof, but we're a bit big for that now.
* Molgrin sits down on the bed, which is really the only place to sit other than the floor. There are some kids' toys lying around and a handmade quilt that looks like it's ancient.
* Firrin makes a litle sound as he stands in the doorway and looks around
Firrin> its like nothing has chaanged...
Molgrin> oh... I guess, yeah. It's not my room anymore but it's not like they changed out all the furniture or anything :)
Molgrin> want to sit down?
* Molgrin pats the bed next to him
* Firrin hesitates, but will come sit beside you.
Molgrin> I'm sorry if this was awkward. I just thought... you seemed like you could use a good meal and some company that wasn't expecting anything from you.
Firrin> I always liked your mother's stew...
* Molgrin smiles
Molgrin> It's good, isn't it?
Molgrin> She probably thinks you need to fatten up, I saw her give you an extra scoop ;)
Firrin> well I think she gave you two
* Molgrin nods, chuckling at that
Firrin> and an extra dumpling
Molgrin> She always did think maybe if she just fed me more, I'd get bigger eventually.
Firrin> I'm glad she's well
* Molgrin nods
Firrin> I...
Firrin> I'd wanted to come back to Southwall, after we left Shom
Molgrin> Oh... but your mother didn't?
* Molgrin guesses
Firrin> I didn't have the funds.
Molgrin> Oh, I see.
Molgrin> It must have been difficult.
Firrin> We wound up down in Hope Falls - i'm sure you can imagien what she thought of that
Molgrin> I can...
Firrin> I coudln't find any kind of work that would allow me to care for her... It was .... very dire
* Molgrin nods sympathetically
Firrin> and then Mr. Malassar came along.
Molgrin> I wish I had known, maybe I could have helped. I don't really know what I'd have done, but... I wish I could have done something.
Molgrin> or at least you wouldn't have had to do all that you did alone.
Firrin> I appreciate that but...
Molgrin> but?
* Molgrin asks gently
Firrin> anyway. I understand what Mr. Harrowden said but I woudln't be the one paying the price, or not just me
* Molgrin nods
* Firrin sniffs
* Molgrin puts an arm around you
Firrin> I have to do it, Mol.
Molgrin> you don't have to pretend it's okay though. not here. not with me.
* Firrin sniffs again
Firrin> It has to be okay.
Molgrin> if this wasn't the case... if you were free to choose... what would you want? for yourself?
Firrin> I...I don't know
Firrin> I don't have any... purpose, or prospects
Firrin> all I have is... what Mr Malassar gives me, and My mother and... and you.
* Molgrin looks a little surprised at being included in that list but also smiles
Firrin> but he sais that I should be spending my time on... connectios with greater prospects
Firrin> I'm sure the only reason he hasn't forbidden me to visit with you is because of Doven Aelindar's reputation
Molgrin> hm.
Molgrin> well I'm glad for that, then.
Molgrin> what if you didn't need them? I mean prospects and purpose and Mr. Malassar.
* Firrin loks up at you like he can'e even conceive of that
Firrin> everyone needs some kind pf prospects, don't they?
Molgrin> well... I don't know. Everyone needs something they can do, or that they enjoy, but is that the same as prospects?
* Molgrin considers this philosophical question for a moment, then shakes his head
Firrin> it doesn't matter anyway, because none of those things are true
Molgrin> but it does matter. because... how can you know whether you can be happy with Paiza, if you don't know what would make you happy at all?
Firrin> how can I be happy yo marry a... a woman I hardly know, and moce somewhere where I know no one, and everyone there is dead?
Molgrin> Dovah Aelindar asked me if you preferred men >.> well he didn't exactly say it like that, but that was what I think he meant. and I wasn't sure, if that might be part of things.
* Firrin is stunned that you just straight up (lol) asked
Molgrin> so um... is it?
Firrin> I... well, I, ah,, well...
Firrin> yes but it's just match, it's not meant to be...romantic, or anything
Molgrin> oh...
* Molgrin breathes softly
* Firrin looks away
Firrin> I should... maybe I should go.
Molgrin> you don't have to... we could.... I mean... just for a little while....
Firrin> We could what?
Molgrin> ...stay here... together...
Firrin> It will... it will just make everything else harder
Molgrin> no one would have to know...
Firrin> *I*'ll know
Firrin> I'll know what I'm missing.
Firrin> Mol....
* Firrin takes your hand
Molgrin> yes?
* Molgrin leans closer
* Firrin squeezes it.
Firrin> I wish thing were different.
* Firrin will let go your hand, and get up off the bed to go
Molgrin> wait... I....
* Molgrin gets up too
* Firrin looks back, sad and wistful
Firrin> (Back)
* Molgrin steels himself, takes a deep breath, and pulls you close and kisses you.
* Molgrin won't hold you there if you seem to resist or don't kiss back though.
* Firrin starts to open to you, but pulls himself back
Firrin> I can't, Mol. I can't.
* Molgrin looks sad
* Firrin will turn to go
* Molgrin will not stop you this time
Firrin> (Good because you might have found that you could not!)
* Firrin will say goodnight you your mom :) and then try and find a carriage back up mountain :(
* Molgrin will give you some time to go, and then just go back to the Aelindar household alone and upset.
