+ | <br>(Debbie) Yes I suppose.
+ | <br>(Curtana) You don't sound certain ;)
+ | <br>(Debbie) I just want to try to learn a bit more about her and what she was doing there... she seemed to inidicate that she was there to seek me out, which would be bad, because then *someone* is setting us up and Catriana must be in on it.
+ | <br>(Debbie) ;^D | ||
+ | <br>(Curtana) heh | ||
+ | <br>(Debbie) So, anyway... they went into Loick's extensive gardens.
+ | <br>(Debbie) last I know.
+ | <br>(Debbie) :^) | ||
+ | <br>(Curtana) Yes. :)
+ | <br>* Curtana is now known as Althea
+ | <br>(Debbie) And then I suppose they fucked.
+ | <br>* Debbie is now known as Falke
+ | <br>(Althea) (I would assume as much)
+ | <br>* Althea is now sitting under a tree. It is perhaps an hour before dawn.
+ | <br>(Falke) (So now... we are just lazing about in the afterglow, I suppose. Was she a vixen?)
+ | <br>* Althea has a faint smile on her lips. You have one or two painful scratches, either from her, or a twig or something. ;)
+ | <br>* Falke idly hopes there's no contact poison on her nails...
+ | <br>* Althea 's fancy dress will probably never be the same. Oh well.
+ | <br>* Falke sighs complacently, then turns to gaze at her for a while, thoughts hidden.
+ | <br>(Falke) (What about my clothes? :^o)
+ | <br>(Althea) (Yours are in a bit better shape... Maybe a grass stain or two, but nothing major.)
+ | <br>* Falke smiles mischievously. He feels good... it's been a long time since he last indulged.
+ | <br>(Althea) I think you needed that. ;)
+ | <br>(Falke) Who is your mother? Someone ought to tell on you. I'm never going to be the same. Look at these scratches!
+ | <br>* Althea chuckles
+ | <br>* Falke protests cheerfully.
+ | <br>(Althea) My mother is no one of importance... I guess if you want to tell on me, you'd have to talk to my father.
+ | <br>(Falke) And he is...?
+ | <br>* Falke wonders how much she knows he knows about her.
+ | <br>* Althea smiles again.
+ | <br>(Althea) Dead. | ||
+ | <br>(Althea) He's been dead longer than I've been alive - he's quite good at it by now.
+ | <br>* Althea 's eyes are heavy-lidded, a bit narrowed.
+ | <br>(Althea) He taught me ...well, *almost* everything I know.
+ | <br>* Falke feigns surprise, then asks:
+ | <br>(Falke) What do you know that he didn't teach you?
+ | <br>(Althea) You've gotten a taste of part of it...
+ | <br>* Falke smiles complicitly.
+ | <br>* Althea sets to braiding her hair, smiling back.
+ | <br>(Althea) As for the rest, well, a woman has to have her secrets.
+ | <br>* Falke backs away from that. ;^D
+ | <br>(Falke) So... what were your original plans this evening? You couldn't have known you'd meet up with this dashing young man.
+ | <br>* Falke says, mocking himself.
+ | <br>(Althea) Well, I hoped I would meet *a* dashing young man. I didn't suspect it would be you.
+ | <br>* Falke nods. | ||
+ | <br>(Althea) And I do enjoy a good party.
+ | <br>(Althea) Loick always has good parties.
+ | <br>(Falke) It would seem so.
+ | <br>(Falke) I had to sneak in myself. You?
+ | <br>(Althea) In places like this, I rarely have to sneak.
+ | <br>(Falke) You do fit the part.
+ | <br>* Althea smiles faintly.
+ | <br>(Althea) Not bad for a girl from Pearl City, eh?
+ | <br>(Falke) Not bad at all.
+ | <br>(Althea) It's amazing what a good tailor can do.
+ | <br>(Falke) I've seen you before... now I can place you.
+ | <br>(Althea) Oh? | ||
+ | <br>(Falke) A house near White Bear Square...
+ | <br>* Althea 's smile tightens for a moment, then relaxes again.
+ | <br>(Althea) Visiting old friends.
+ | <br>(Falke) There was a man with you... was that your dead father?
+ | <br>* Althea shakes her head
+ | <br>(Althea) No. | ||
+ | <br>* Falke smiles, playing dumb.
+ | <br>(Althea) A patron.
+ | <br>(Falke) Oh? | ||
+ | <br>(Falke) He looked interesting. What is he called?
+ | <br>(Althea) Many things.
+ | <br>(Althea) <br>(brb, sorry)
+ | <br>* Falke rolls over on to his belly and rests his chin on folded arms, to regard her better.
+ | <br>(Falke) (n/p) | ||
+ | <br>(Althea) (back) | ||
+ | <br>(Falke) (ok) | ||
+ | <br>(Althea) He is...
+ | <br>(Althea) "He's the spider with a fly, he's the knife before you die."
+ | <br>* Althea chuckles to herself.
+ | <br>(Falke) (Hmm... using my 2 score in Sense Motive, can I tell how she feels about him?)
+ | <br>(Althea) (I'll roll)
+ | <br>(Falke) Pleasant...
+ | <br>(Althea) No, not really.
+ | <br>* Falke doesn't have to feign a worried expression. ;^)
+ | <br>(Althea) Useful, but not pleasant.
+ | <br>(Falke) Am I going to be in trouble if he finds out I spent a night with you...?
+ | <br>(Althea) (You get the idea she's not fond of him, but maybe a certain sense of respect)
+ | <br>* Althea waves one hand dismissively.
+ | <br>(Althea) He has more important things to worry about.
+ | <br>* Falke looks relieved and curious.
+ | <br>(Falke) Such as? | ||
+ | <br>* Falke doubts she'll tell him anything but she might drop hints unawares.
+ | <br>(Althea) You don't honestly think I'll tell you that?
+ | <br>* Althea says with a laugh
+ | <br>* Falke grins. | ||
+ | <br>(Falke) I ought to be a Cat. Too curious for my own good.
+ | <br>(Falke) No, I didn't expect you'd tell me that.
+ | <br>(Falke) But I had to *try*.
+ | <br>(Althea) Of course...
+ | <br>* Althea has finished fixing her hair and is now toying with her necklace idly.
+ | <br>* Falke sits up. | ||
+ | <br>(Falke) Well, it seems like we ought to clear out fairly soon... the sun's trying to rise.
+ | <br>* Althea looks around and nods
+ | <br>(Falke) Or does Talavera not mind unexpected breakfast guests?
+ | <br>* Falke grins wryly.
+ | <br>* Althea chuckles
+ | <br>* Falke stands up and offers her a hand up.
+ | <br>(Althea) We're on our own, I'm afraid.
+ | <br>* Althea takes his hand and rises gracefully.
+ | <br>* Falke pulls her in closely and fixes her with his intense green eyes.
+ | <br>(Althea) (q) Thank you for a ...memorable evening.
+ | <br>* Falke laughs lightly.
+ | <br>(Falke) You flatter me... I'm the least adept at these sorts of things.
+ | <br>(Falke) It is I who should thank you for the pleasure of your company.
+ | <br>(Althea) What you lack in technique, you more than make up for with... enthusiasm ;)
+ | <br>(Althea) Who knows, perhaps we'll see each other again.
+ | <br>* Falke looks away, blushing, and tugs at his collar.
+ | <br>(Falke) Perhaps. I'll be in town for an indefinite period. The Aubins are branching out, you know.
+ | <br>* Althea grazes his lips with a kiss
+ | <br>(Althea) Of course.
+ | <br>* Falke is startled.
+ | <br>(Althea) I'm sure you can find me if need be.
+ | <br>* Falke nods. | ||
+ | <br>(Althea) Good. | ||
+ | <br>(Falke) It would be hard to overlook a pearl such as you.
+ | <br>* Althea laughs under her breath.
+ | <br>* Falke smiles slyly.
+ | <br>(Falke) Shall I walk you to the gate?
+ | <br>(Althea) Quite. | ||
+ | <br>* Althea takes his arm
+ | <br>* Falke offers her an elbow in imitation of the nobles.
+ | <br>* Althea and Falke walk towards the gate, seeing no one else on the way.
+ | <br>* Falke walks her out in silence, unless she says anything.
+ | <br>* Althea keeps quite as well, until you get to the gate where you must part ways.
+ | <br>(Althea) It has been sweet, good sir, and I hope you will remember me in your prayers.
+ | <br>* Althea says with a sly smile
+ | <br>* Falke smiles back.
+ | <br>(Falke) Indeed. | ||
+ | <br>(Althea) Farewell.
+ | <br>(Falke) . o O (You're probably Houseless... :^/ )
+ | <br>(Falke) Until we meet again.
+ | <br>* Althea heads for the black carriage that apparently awaits her.
+ | <br>* Falke turns and heads off in a direction that is quite opposite to the barracks.
+ | <br>* Althea glances back only once.
+ | <br>* Falke doesn't glance back at all.
+ | <br>(Althea) (there we go :)
+ | <br>* Althea is now known as Curtana
+ | <br>* Falke heads towards a neighborhood that a lesser noble family might conceivably have a residence in, then circles around to the barracks.
+ | <br>(Curtana) ('k) | ||
+ | <br>* Falke is now known as Debbie
+ | <br>(Debbie) He's going to be so tired... he has to work pretty much right away, doesn't he?
+ | <br>(Curtana) He might get an hour of sleep or so ;) But don't worry, Boden and Pavo and Kalman are probably all in the same boat ;)
+ | <br>(Debbie) He'll see Catiana as soon as practical.
+ | <br>(Debbie) That probably wouldn't be until the day after at least.
+ | <br>(Curtana) Okay. You want to do that now?
+ | <br>(Debbie) Might as well if you;re willing.
+ | <br>(Curtana) Sure :)
+ | <br>* Curtana is now known as Catiana
+ | <br>* Catiana will be sitting in her window-seat when you come to see her, then.
+ | <br>* Falke cleans up after his day of work and heads up to the nicer neighborhoods.
+ | <br>* Falke smiles mysteriously at Cat's hubby, fully aware of his disapproval. But if any silverware has ever disappeared, it was their own household staff's fault! ;^D
+ | <br>(Catiana) (heh) | ||
+ | <br>* Catiana smiles when you enter the room
+ | <br>(Catiana) Good day, Falke.
+ | <br>* Falke executes a little bow. He respects Catiana.
+ | <br>(Falke) Good day, my lady.
+ | <br>* Catiana nods back
+ | <br>(Catiana) Take a seat, if you like.
+ | <br>(Falke) Thank you.
+ | <br>* Catiana gestures to a bench across from where she sits.
+ | <br>* Falke takes the offered seat.
+ | <br>(Falke) Ready for a full report?
+ | <br>* Catiana folds her hands
+ | <br>(Catiana) Of course.
+ | <br>* Falke smiles. | ||
+ | <br>(Falke) First off... I wonder if I might be so bold as to ask why you are interested in this girl, and what you know already?
+ | <br>(Catiana) She's sleeping with Izaguirre, among other people. She seems to have come out of nowhere, but she's trained like a noblewoman.
+ | <br>* Catiana shrugs | ||
+ | <br>(Catiana) I think she's had a very good teacher.
+ | <br>* Falke bows his head in acquiescence.
+ | <br>(Falke) (Would I know of other people Catiana regularly uses as informers?)
+ | <br>(Catiana) (no one you've ever met)
+ | <br>(Falke) (She couldn't know that without someone having reported it to her)
+ | <br>* Falke looks thoughtful.
+ | <br>(Catiana) (That's a reasonable assumption, yes)
+ | <br>(Falke) Well. | ||
+ | <br>(Falke) You're quite right. She had a good trainer.
+ | <br>* Catiana listens with interest
+ | <br>(Falke) One Duke Martan Kizer, in fact.
+ | <br>* Catiana laughs, clapping her hands together
+ | <br>* Falke pauses for effect, or maybe just to see how Cat reacts.
+ | <br>(Catiana) Splendid, just splendid.
+ | <br>* Falke smiles. | ||
+ | <br>(Falke) She is one of his many illegitimate children.
+ | <br>(Catiana) One of the last, I'll wager. He's not as young as he used to be.
+ | <br>(Falke) I don't know who her mother is, but doubtless she is not particularly important... Althea would have been conceived after the Duke's "death."
+ | <br>(Falke) Miss Dark in fact said as much...
+ | <br>* Catiana sits with a finger to her cheek, processing the information.
+ | <br>(Falke) So, whether she is of our House or Houseless, I don't yet know... I can probably find out, if it's important.
+ | <br>(Falke) Grey Grizzle raised the girl on the streets of Pearl City, until she was about 15.
+ | <br>(Catiana) Well, it might be interesting to know who her mother is, but... I don't think it's pressing.
+ | <br>(Falke) She then struck off on her own and soon fell in with Izaguirre.
+ | <br>(Falke) She respects him, but does not care much for him. He is more of a convenient stepping stone for her than anything, I think.
+ | <br>* Catiana nods | ||
+ | <br>(Catiana) But a stepping stone to what, I wonder.
+ | <br>* Falke nods. | ||
+ | <br>* Catiana thinks a moment longer
+ | <br>(Falke) She *was* well trained. She is circumspect in her speech.
+ | <br>* Falke says by way of apology.
+ | <br>(Catiana) Does she keep up contact with her father, do you think?
+ | <br>(Falke) He told me she hadn't really come back to see him since she left.
+ | <br>* Catiana considers that.
+ | <br>(Falke) But doubtless she knows where to find him if she needs him.
+ | <br>(Catiana) Martan wouldn't raise a girl for no reason. He's not that sort of man.
+ | <br>(Catiana) She's a tool of some kind, possible a weapon. The question is, whether it's his hand guiding her or not.
+ | <br>(Catiana) (er, possibly)
+ | <br>* Falke nods, absrbing it all. He has little experience with courtly intrigues.
+ | <br>(Catiana) How did you find the party otherwise?
+ | <br>(Falke) ... | ||
+ | <br>(Falke) I've never seen or tasted so much good food in all my life.
+ | <br>* Catiana laughs | ||
+ | <br>(Catiana) Good, good.
+ | <br>* Falke says noncomittally. He doesn't think it would be good to get into an argument over the disparity between the classes with Catiana... ;^D
+ | <br>(Catiana) I'm sorry I didn't give you more preparation time, or instruction...
+ | <br>* Falke was dismayed by the conspicuous consumption.
+ | <br>(Catiana) I hope you weren't too uncomfortable.
+ | <br>(Falke) Except for the cigars, it wasn't too bad.
+ | <br>* Catiana laughs again
+ | <br>(Falke) Why anyone would want to inhale that... pollution is beyond me.
+ | <br>* Falke shudders dramatically.
+ | <br>(Catiana) I suppose it's a manly thing to do ;)
+ | <br>(Falke) I kept a lit one as a prop, mainly...
+ | <br>(Catiana) That was well done, then.
+ | <br>(Falke) Now... what do I get in return for all my troubles, aside from a nice suit?
+ | <br>* Catiana chuckles
+ | <br>(Catiana) What would you like?
+ | <br>* Falke pulls out the book of poems his sister gave him for his birthday.
+ | <br>(Falke) More lessons perhaps?
+ | <br>(Catiana) That is one thing I can give you without any difficulty.
+ | <br>(Falke) And one of things I most value.
+ | <br>* Catiana will teach him for a few hours, then.
+ | <br>* Falke smiles, a bit sadly perhaps. Sad about the lack of opportunity he had as a child. ^-^
+ | <br>* Falke is an avid pupil.
+ | <br>* Catiana is a good teacher, quite patient with him.
+ | <br>(Catiana) (anything else you wanted to do or talk about?)
+ | <br>* Falke might ask if she might be able to tutor him in courtly ways in case he has to go to more parties in the future.
+ | <br>* Catiana will be happy to give him some lessons in etiquette, perhaps another day.
+ | <br>* Falke nods. | ||
+ | <br>(Falke) Althea Dark and Izaguirre are carrying out some sort of business at a house near White Bear square... a house owned by our late Duke's nephew Jovien.
+ | <br>(Catiana) Oh? | ||
+ | <br>* Falke tosses her way by way of payment for the promised etiquette lessons.
+ | <br>(Falke) Indeed. | ||
+ | <br>* Catiana nods, her brain once more turning over these pieces of information, trying to piece them together.
+ | <br>(Catiana) Thank you, Falke.
+ | <br>(Catiana) A most diverting evening.
+ | <br>(Falke) You're welcome...
+ | <br>(Falke) It was my pleasure.
+ | <br>* Falke bows and leaves then. (I assume she was dismissing him?)
+ | <br>(Catiana) (Yep :)
+ | <br>* Falke keeps his eyes and ears and nose open for anythign of interest on his way back to the barracks then. :^)
+ | <br>* Falke is now known as Debbie
+ | <br>(Catiana) (okay :)
+ | <br>* Catiana is now known as Curtana
+ | <br>(Curtana) There we go. :)
+ | <br>(Debbie) Thanks | ||
+ | <br>(Curtana) No problem at all
+ | <br>(Debbie) I didn't learn much more about Althea but what I did learn was interesting. :^)
+ | <br>(Curtana) heh - I can't give you everything at once ;)
+ | <br>(Curtana) But I'm glad you liked it :)
+ | <br>(Debbie) I know. :^)
+ | <br>(Debbie) miao! | ||
+ | <br>(Curtana) :) | ||
+ | <br>(Curtana) I'll be off now :)
+ | <br>(Debbie) Someday I'll prove useful to the rest of the squadron and then maybe they'll like me... ;^D
+ | <br>(Debbie) Okay. | ||
+ | <br>(Debbie) later | ||
+ | <br>(Curtana) I'm sure they will eventually... ;)
+ | <br>(Curtana) Night :)

Logs
Session Start: Mon Dec 23 17:58:32 2002
(Boden) Who is throwing this party and who are they...I don't have any of my NPC lists here.
(Narrator_) Someone explain things to Rob.
(Kalman) a noble, Loick Talavera
(Boden) And how do we know him?
(Kalman) YOu don't
(Kalman) I know him because he is my cousin
(Boden) ok...thats why I'm confused.
(Kalman) Pavo knows him because he takes it up the ass
(Pavo) :D
(Pavo) And how!
(Kalman) or possibly gives it, hard to say
(Boden) So he isn't involved in this whole Devilas thing?
(Kalman) I told you that Davilass would be at his party
(Loch) the whole savaged by dogs plan... remember?
(Belden) dog
(Belden) savaged by dog
(Kalman) yeah ;)
(Pavo) Pavo ain' a dog :
(
(Belden) I think trampled by horse would be much more effective...
(Kalman) we ain't talking 'bout Pavo
(Pavo) I'm kiddin'
(Boden) Yeah...but now my brother has convinced me that plan could get him in a lot of trouble.
(Boden) I told him I wouldn't do it.
(Belden) horse, man
(Narrator_) If you did it at the vak Andras party, Rob.
(Kalman) yeah
(Narrator_) Franek isn't responsible for all the dogs in the city, just the vak Andras ones.
(Kalman) which is only one of the many reasons I told you to do it at Loick's
(Boden) How long is this from when I talked to Franek.
(Kalman) Fishy, when we talked about it last session, I told yout to do it at Loick's partyy.... arr.
(Kalman) it would just be so much.,... better
(Boden) Well...that didn't seem to have stuck in my head, because when I talked to my bother I was talking about your party.
(Narrator_) A day or two.
(Belden) (5 minutes is up... :)
(Kalman) silly Boden
(Boden) Ok, I should talk to Kalman first then...since we are waiting for C anyways.
(Boden) If that is ok.
(Boden) (did the horse idea get sugested to Boden in game...or is that only out of game.)
(Kalman) (Only oogly so far)
(Belden) (I'm sure Kal will take care of it)
(Kalman) we can start in here... or Rob and I can just give the gist of the conversation without actually RPing it, for time
(Narrator_) If you want to talk in here, go ahead. It's not like I'm doing much right now, clearly.
(Boden) (I'm ok with that.)
* Pavo makes Julie some tea
(Kalman) (Basically, I'll suggest Loick's party, and say maybe a horse would be better...)
(Boden) (OK, then Boden will ask you what this party is for, where his place is, and if you could give me a quick rundown of the layout.)
(Kalman) (I'll tell you Loick is a noble guy who trhows a big party every byear, and when it is (night before ours) and where)
(Kalman) (Dabilass and crew are likely to be there, he is likely to be having a 'very good time' and not necessarily be on good behaviour anyway)
(Boden) (does Kal know the layout of the place?)
(Kalman) (Not very well, I assume)
(Narrator_) (No, you might have been there once or twice before.)
(Narrator_) (It's a big mansion that backs onto a wooded park)
(Narrator_) (But you don't know the inside layout really at all)
(Kalman) (I'll tell him about the convenient wooded park ;D)
* Boden will plan on being there with a few large dogs that I will charm.
(Kalman) (good enouhg?)
(Boden) (I'll have a shortsword and dagger, as well as my leather armour and suitable sneaky cloths
(Boden) (good enough for me.)
(Kalman) (good)
(Narrator_) Okay, I'll start, then.
(Narrator_) It is nearing the end of Fourth-month, and the weather in Diablotin is balmy, the skies clear. The scents of the city, both pleasant and unpleasant, are growing heavier with the heat.
(Narrator_) Today is the 17th, a mere three days before Loick Talavera's soiree, and four days before the celebrations of Ivona vak Andras's fifteenth birthday. Although for some of you neither of these events is of any importance, for others they are nearly monumental.
(Narrator_) Fortunately for all of you, you have the 21st as a day off.
(Narrator_) Boden, you receive a note on the morning of the 17th. You eventually puzzle through the handwriting and make out the following message:
(Narrator_) "Boden of Gouge, I have missed you. I must confess I greatly desire to see you again. If you will accompany me to Loick Talavera's soiree in three days, I will make it more than worth your while. Rest assured I will provide whatever accoutrements you require. I know what it is you want. Awaiting your arrival, Couramance"
* Boden is quite sureprised.
* Boden will take the note to Kalman.
(Narrator_) (We'll assume you do that after work on the 17th, then, as it's the first chance you'll have to talk in private)
(Boden)
(ok...is there stuff we are doing before then?)
(Narrator_) (Just do what you have to :)
(Narrator_) (I'll take care of retroactive time-distortions if necessary)
(Boden) ok.
* Kalman will be home
(Boden) (wispered when we are alone) um, Kalman...I think things got stranger for me.
(Kalman) oh?
* Boden will secretly hand Kalman the letter.
* Kalman will read it
* Kalman will re-read it ;)
(Kalman) That's....very interesting :o
(Kalman) that certainly is more interesting
(Boden) um..does she mean sex, or killing guy?
(Kalman) I don't know...
(Kalman) (Is there any way that I might be able to know if this is really from her?)
(Kalman) are you sure this is really from her?
(Boden) really? I thought it was written in like politics code or something.
(Narrator_) (It's on Silveira stationery. Seems likely.)
* Boden will smell the note.
(Narrator_) (smells of some musky perfume)
(Boden) yep, its hers.
(Kalman) hmmm...
(Kalman) It could be either... or both.
(Kalman) It could be some sort of trick, though...
(Boden) yeah, I bet she's sneaky.
(Kalman) Well, I was under the impression she was friends with Daviulass.... and at the least she certainly does keep company with him often enough
(Boden) but I'm kinda a comodity for her. She likes men taller than her.
(Kalman) hmm.
(Boden) She let on that she mostly let Devilas fuck her when he bought her really expensive things.
(Kalman) He'd certainly be insulted if she were to come with you
(Boden) I'm likeing that idea.
(Kalman) It might facilitate your plan, or you may be able to improvise something, even if she is only talking about, ahh, sex.
(Kalman) I wouldn't bring up the other subject unless she does, though.
(Boden) ok.
* Boden nods vigorousely.
(Boden) oh, and what does accoutrements mean?
(Kalman) hmm... clothes and things
(Boden) Can I wear a dress uniform?
(Boden) and sword?
* Boden says hopefully
(Kalman) (I'm assuming that weaponry wouldn't be regular for such things)
(Kalman) Well....
(Narrator_) (It would be a bit odd - they might ask you to take it off at the door)
(Kalman) I doubt it
(Kalman) There will probably be too many drunks around to let people carry swords around.
(Boden) well...I guess thats ok.
(Boden) if no one has weapons then it works out.
(Boden) I guess there are guards at these things...but they'd be personal guards right?
* Kalman nods
* Boden tries to think very very hard, but seems to fail.
* Kalman thinks for a minute
(Kalman) Maybe you should go and see her, make sure this is really from her, and if so, see about getting accoutrements.... If she does mean to help... she may mention it.
(Kalman) But even then, I'd be careful. She could always tell people you were trying to get her to consipire with her, or even that you forced her to help you.
(Boden) ok.
* Boden seems a bit worried.
(Boden) Do you really think I should just show up at her door?
(Boden) isn't there some politic thing I need to do first, Like have some nancy tell her when I'm coming or something?
(Kalman) can you send her a note, perhaps, asking to see her about the note you recived?
(Kalman) that would be acceptable
(Boden) ok, and should I sugest a time.
* Kalman nods, to himself
(Kalman) yes
(Boden) or let her write back...
(Kalman) hmmm... actually, let her write back
(Boden) ok.
(Boden) I'll get to writing that note.
(Kalman) and, also, if she does bring this up.... please don't mention me.
* Boden will nod.
(Boden) ok.
(Narrator_) (OK, I'll move on to Falke, if that's okay)
(Boden) (n/p)
(Narrator_) Falke, on the morning of the 17th, you receive a note at the barracks. It reads as follows:
(Narrator_) "You have some work to do. Prepare to attend the party at the Talavera boy's home in three days' time. I've set up an account for you at Eflamm's so you will be clothed appropriately. Speak to the woman with the blue amaryllis in her hair, find out whatever you can about her. Do well."
(Narrator_) The note is signed "Catiana".
* Falke wonders what this is about.
(Narrator_) You would know that Eflamm Bramble is a well-known tailor who caters particularly to noblemen. His shop is situated on Glazebrook Road, in the Grand Vallon.
* Falke will head there then on a day off.
(Narrator_) (You can go after work on the 18th, we'll say)
* Falke is amused. How to turn *him* into a "noble."
* Eflamm is a portly, middle-aged man with wild reddish hair
* Eflamm immediately recognizes you as a new customer
(Narrator_) (We won't rp this out, as we're short on time)
* Falke wears his best clothes to the store so he will feel a bit less conspicuous. But not much.
(Narrator_) After some brief consultation, he determines that Catiana has indeed put aside a sum of money in order to clothe you, though he refuses to reveal how much. He assures you he will take care of everything.
(Narrator_) You leave with a handsome courtly outfit in black and a shade of pale grey-green Eflamm assures you is very becoming. You feel a bit uncomfortable in it, and you suspect it might cost more than your father makes in a year, but somehow it pleases you.
(Falke) (I hope it doesn't have flounces and ruffles.)
(Narrator_) (It's fairly subdued :)
(Narrator_) (She probably didn't provide *that* much money ;)
(Falke) (Thank goodness...)
(Narrator_) Pavo and Kalman, you are also going to the party. Are there any preparations you wish to make before you go?
* Falke returns to the barracks and puts the suit in his trunk.
(Pavo) Do I have proper attire?
(Pavo) (And if I bought it, how much should I cut from my money?)
(Narrator_) (You would need to procure something new, or spruce up something old.)
(Narrator_) (For a new one, let's say 80 gp. To spruce up an old one, 35gp)
(Kalman) (Make sure I have good clothes and everything... standar stuff. Are these the kind of parties where you are expected to bring a gift for the host, or not?)
(Narrator_) (No, no gift is required, and you have good clothes aplenty)
(Kalman) (yup, I suuuure do, so, I guess I don't have anything secific to preare, arrr!)
(Pavo) (Hrm... so nearly three months salary... hrrm :D)
(Narrator_) (:)
* Kalman wonders how hot Eglorine is going to be.
* Kalman suspects.... very ^-^
(Pavo) (How obvious would it be that I'd spruced instead of purchased?)
(Narrator_) (Well, it would pass cursory inspection. Anyone who knew about fashion would know, though)
(Pavo) (*bites the bullet and goes shopping...* It's an investment, right?)
(Narrator_) ("That is *soo* First-month.")
(Narrator_) (Okay :)
(Pavo) .oO(And if I need money, I can ... work harder!)
(Narrator_) (Boden, you receive a note back from Couramance telling you to show up whenever you are free on the 20th)
(Pavo) What are my house colours? What's the current style? ;p
(Boden) (ok, will do.)
(Narrator_) (Pavo - Cat's colour is red. Your family don't have their own colours, not being nobles. As for current style, think early 18th century)
(Kalman) (Best clothing ever...)
(Narrator_) (So, if there are no objections, we will proceed to the day of the party)
(Pavo) (Well, lets go with Red on Black then...)
(Pavo) (;o)
(Narrator_) (sounds good :)
(Kalman) (except for the wigs. Do we do wigs? Please say no ;)
(Boden) (What happens when I go to couramances?)
(Narrator_) You arrive at Couramance's family home after you get off work on the 20th. Instead of seeing her immediately, however, you are whisked away by servants who dress you in an outfit the likes of which you have never seen, let alone imagined wearing.
(Boden) (like a nobles outfit...or like bondage gear?)
(Narrator_) It is close-fitting but comfortable, made from some sort of soft but sturdy material. The only down-side as far as you are concerned is the colour, which is a bright red. Still, it fits better than any clothes you have ever owned, as if it was made for you.
(Narrator_) (Like a noble's outfit, silly :)
(Narrator_) You are even given new boots of polished leather and an ornamental but highly functional dagger.
(Boden) (:), heres hoping.)
* Boden will see if he can move properly in the outfit.
(Narrator_) (You can move very freely - no problems there)
(Boden) (how fast could I take it off?)
(Narrator_) (It's a jacket, shirt, pants, boots - presumably would take 4 steps at least ;)
(Narrator_) (Shirt is white, the rest is red)
(Boden) (ok. I was worried there'd be extra little nancy stuff.)
(Narrator_)
(Nope, you look very manly :)
* Boden will ask one of the servants if I can still wear my belt with it.
(Narrator_) The servant will certainly replace the belt it has with your belt, and attaches the scabbard for the dagger to yours.
(Boden) great.
* Couramance joins you in the hall when you are ready. She wears a gown of glossy red silk that catches the light, and her silver-blonde hair is done in some complicated knots with red flowers scattered here and there.
* Couramance smiles when she sees you.
(Couramance) I'm glad you could make it, soldier. It's going to be a fun evening, I promise.
(Boden) Thank you for the invitation. I'm sure it will.
* Boden will smile up at Couramance.
(Couramance) To the carriage, then. We wouldn't want to be late.
(Boden) (I'd still be wearing the gauntlet if I can get away with it.)
* Couramance will lead you to the waiting carriage
* Boden will offer her my arm and lead her out to the carriage.
* Kalman will be nicely dressed, but saving all the really nice
(probably new) stuff for tomorrow and the court presentation, of course
(Narrator_) (okay, you'll be on your way - now to Pavo)
* Adrius picks you up in his carriage at an appropriate time.
* Adrius looks handsome in his suit of different shades of blue, designed to bring out his eyes to maximum effect.
* Pavo smiles winningly, wearing his new threads.
(Adrius) You look wonderful.
(Adrius) Ready to go?
* Pavo almost blushes... "Yes, I'm ready..."
* Adrius grins
(Adrius) Hop in, then
(Pavo) You're looking quite good yourself...
* Adrius smiles, clearly flattered
* Pavo climbs in and sits beside Adrius, should there be room.
(Narrator_) Across from you sits his twin sister, dressed in similar colours, and someone you don't recognize: a delicate woman dressed in pink with her blonde hair piled in some complicated arrangement and dotted with pink flowers.
(Adrius) These are my sisters, Antenia and Liese.
* Adrius says, pointing to each in turn.
(Narrator_) The women giggle behind their fans.
(Narrator_) (And you're off... Now to Falke, and then the party should start! :)
(Narrator_) Falke, you have no carriage to pick you up. You could hire one, or walk.
(Falke) (I'll walk)
(Narrator_) (Okay, n/p)
(Narrator_) Loick Talavera's mansion is in the Grand Vallon, on the charming Thorne Terrace. It backs onto Honor Oak Rise, a tree-covered hill which serves as something of a private park for the families of that area.
(Narrator_) The primary manor of Loick's branch of the Talavera family faces the main street, but Loick's own home is somewhat more isolated, set back from the hustle and bustle of the Grand.
(Narrator_) As each of you arrive, carriages are already lined up outside and crowds of splendidly-dressed young men and women are disembarking, laughing and talking amongst themselves.
* Boden is a bit nervous
* Loick himself stands at the top of the stone stairs, welcoming people as they arrive.
* Loick is strikingly handsome, with a head of black curls and the deep violet eyes that run in his family. He is tall, muscular, and impeccably dressed. You can all hear his laugh echoing off the walls as he greets the people ahead of you.
(Pavo) .oO( I didn't think it would be THIS big of an affair... eep )
* Couramance takes your arm casually as you climb the steps to the entrance, Boden.
(Couramance) (m) Just let me do the talking, soldier.
* Boden will happily let her have it.
* Boden nods.
(Falke) (Julie, I'm going to have to give them a name. so I was wondering if there was a little-known Wolf minor noble family that I might be able to claim relationship to.)
(Boden) (Does she seem nervous?)
(Couramance) (no)
(Boden) (to me or to Falke?)
(Narrator_) (Falke, you could claim to be from the Aubin family, perhaps. They're out in the countryside ;)
(Falke) (ok)
(Narrator_) (And they have dozens of children - what would one more matter? ;)
(Falke) (ok)
* Couramance nears Loick and the two embrace warmly but politely.
(Couramance) Dear, so lovely to see you.
(Falke) (do I know anything about them in case someone suspicious asks?)
(Loick) And you.
(Narrator_) (Ah, you can bluff your way through it ;)
* Couramance nods in Boden's direction
(Falke) (ok)
(Couramance) This is a young nobleman from the countryside, not long in the city. He is of the ancient lineage of Gouge, and his name is Boden.
(Loick) Pleased to meet you, Boden.
* Loick has an easygoing manner, and he shakes your hand firmly.
(Boden) Pleased to meet you.
(Couramance) I'm sure we'll see you later, love.
* Couramance takes your arm again and leads you into the mansion.
(Couramance) (m) Well, that's one hurdle done with.
* Boden will allow himself to be easily led.
(Boden) (w)Why was that a hurdle?
(Couramance) (w) Because he could have decided not to let you in, for any number of reasons.
* Couramance says through her smile
* Boden nods.
* Boden will also try to smile and look less out of place than he is.
* Adrius takes the arm of his twin sister, Pavo, leaving you to escort the blonde sister, Liese, up the steps.
* Pavo offers Liese his arm...
(Narrator_) She will take it and proceed with you to the entrance.
* Loick sort of blinks when he sees you, perhaps in recognition, but he hides it well ;)
* Pavo will keep a look of good humour and leave the talking to Adrius or Liese.
* Kalman arrives alone, of course... arr
* Adrius makes some polite chitchat to Loick, then moves on - everyone wants to get inside :)
* Loick greets Kalman as befits a cousin, with an embrace.
* Kalman will be all appropriately mannerly, and embrace him back, etc
(Loick) ('k)
* Loick smiles in a friendly manner at Falke, greets him politely. You must look the part, Falke :)
(Narrator_) Inside, the house is gloriously decorated. Somewhere a small orchestra plays melodiously but quietly, so that people can talk comfortably. Well-dressed young people cluster in small groups to chat, or mingle between the several sitting rooms.
(Narrator_) You would estimate there are over 200 guests here.
(Falke) (yay)
(Narrator_) Beyond, a dining hall is set for a tempting dinner, which will be served later in the evening. Though the doors to that room are closed, you can see through the glass the amount of wealth and effort that has gone into this event.
(Narrator_) One of the sitting rooms opens onto a patio that looks out over the park. A flight of stairs descend to the well-manicured gardens below, and you can see a few couples walking arm in arm there, enjoying the sunset.
(Narrator_) Beyond that, the woods of the Rise are sunken in shadow.
(Falke) (are there people serving drinks or anything?)
* Kalman will mingle with people he knows and so on
(Narrator_) (Yes, there are servants passing around wine goblets)
* Falke will accept some wine and then find a good place to look around and get a feel for things beforew beginning to socialize.
(Narrator_) (Soon enough, I suspect you would all spot Boden, at least. He is quite obvious :)
* Kalman will take a drink and keep an eye out for Eglorine, and Davilass, and Boden
* Falke will watch the crowd and smile shyly at pretty ladies, and keep an eye out for the lady with the blue amryillis in her hair.
(Pavo) "I didn't think it would be quite THIS big an affair, Adrius..." *chuckles*
* Adrius chuckles
(Adrius) It's bigger than usual, I admit.
(Pavo) (Couramance is on my NPC list, do I reognise her though?)
(Adrius) But I'm sure it will quiet down after the dancing is over.
(Narrator_) (Yes, you would certainly recognize her - she is also very obvious :)
(Pavo) ... Boden's here?
(Pavo) Is he...
(Pavo) (Hahahaha)
* Falke tugs slightly at his collar as he realizes there is a strong chance that he might have to dance at some point this evening.
* Adrius looks at Pavo a bit funnily
(Adrius) Who is Boden?
* Pavo leans closer ... "A fellow guard... the man with Couramance..."
* Adrius looks over and nods
(Adrius) I guess if I can get away with it, she surely can.
* Adrius says with a grin
* Pavo gives him a saucy look. (More faux-snotty than "Pick up the Phone!"-saucy)
* Eglorine is across the room from you, Kalman, chatting with some other young women. She is wearing a deep burgundy gown, low-cut and very flattering.
* Eglorine winks at you over her fan, but doesn't approach right now.
* Kalman smiles at her, surreptitiously
* Eglorine smiles back discreetly.
(Narrator_) (heh)
(Narrator_) Anyone wanna talk to anyone, or shall I proceed?)
* Pavo will just be chatting with Adrius and his sisters, for the most part.
(Kalman) (I'm happy generally mingling for now, but let me know if I notice any of the people that I know here...)
(Narrator_) (Well, you don't see Davilas anywhere atm)
(Narrator_) (If that's what you were asking ;)
(Narrator_) (But you do notice Boden, of course. And I'm sure sooner or later you would also notice Pavo)
(Narrator_) (Falke is trying to be a bit more unobtrusive, I think, so you might not notice him right away - you're totally not expecting to see him, after all ;)
(Kalman) (I did mean the others... I may go over and talk to Pavo, since well, I know Adrius too :o Surprising. )
* Adrius smiles to Kalman as he approaches
(Kalman) Good evening Adrius
(Adrius) Kalman, it's good to see you.
(Adrius) You know my sisters, of course...
* Adrius gestures in their direction
* Kalman smiles at him and Pavo, in a 'this is surprising and somehow amusing) way ;)
(Kalman) Of course...
(Kalman) And Pavo :o
(Adrius) And this is a friend of mine...oh. You two know each other?
(Pavo) Hi!
* Adrius seems surprised
(Pavo) Yes, he works with me, and Boden.
(Adrius) Ah...
(Kalman) There seems to be quite a few of us here tonight, surprisingly enough
(Pavo) Anyone else?
(Pavo) It is wierd... actually.
(Adrius) Perhaps *I* should join the guards, it seems to be the way to get invited to the best parties.
(Pavo) Especially Boden with .Couramance.
* Adrius nods
* Pavo grins at Adrius.
(Pavo) Yes but then you'd have to go with some one other than me... :)
(Adrius) Well, that wouldn't be worth it, then. :)
* Kalman sips his wine as the boys flirt, resolving to just... not think about that ;)
(Kalman) You don't seem to have problems procuring invitations on your own, anyway
(Adrius) Well, no. Honestly, I don't think there *were* invitations, as such.
(Adrius) It's more of a case of, whoever shows up and has nice clothes, gets let in.
(Adrius) There are a lot of people I don't even know here.
* Pavo raises a brow. "Well I'm glad I have a good enough tailor..."
(Adrius) You look very handsome.
* Adrius says reassuringly
* Pavo smiles.
(Narrator_) Soon enough, servants open the doors to the dining hall and you are summoned in to dinner.
* Kalman wonders if Pavo bought stuff just for this, or if Adrius provided for him
(Narrator_) Servants herd you unruly nobles into seats ;)
(Pavo) (cats!)
* Boden stays close to Couranmance.
* Couramance takes your arm and squeezes it to reassure you
* Boden is reasured.
(Couramance) (m) I'll tell you which fork to use, don't worry
(Boden) (m)ok.
(Narrator_) Dinner is a grand affair of six courses. It begins with a nearly clear veal and lemongrass broth, followed by small confections of spiced rice and nuts served wrapped in a delicate seaweed imported from the coast.
(Narrator) Sparkling wine is poured freely into your goblets at regular intervals.
* Boden isn't as afraid as he thought he'd be, he is actually enjoying himself. He just doesn't want to embarrass Couramance.
(Narrator_) Roasted rabbits stuffed with scallions and soft white bread are served whole, and are complimented by thin slices of venison topped with a tart blackberry sauce.
(Narrator_) Next, the almost-translucent blossoms of the syra flower dissolve on your tongue, clearing your palette for the dessert course: an elaborate trifle containing raspberries, sweet cream, and a heady liqueur.
(Narrator_) You all manage to get through the meal without any mishaps ;)
(Kalman) (hooray!)
* Pavo is liberal enough with the wine, but not quite AbFab-liberal.
(Narrator_) After dinner, the large group breaks into male and female contingents, as is traditional.
(Narrator_) (*snick*)
(Narrator_) The women return to the drawing rooms to discuss ...whatever mysterious matters women discuss at these occasions, while the men withdraw to the patio and beyond to smoke cigars and hold their own counsel.
(Boden) .oO(Crap)
* Kalman will go with the men, then, aharr
(Couramance) (m) Don't worry, just keep quiet and you'll be fine.
* Couramance says as she leaves you.
* Eglorine smiles over her fan at Kalman as she retires
(Boden) (m)I'm doing ok. enjoy yourself.
* Boden will go off with the men.
* Kalman smiles back at her, discreetly
(Narrator_) The patio is lit by magical lanterns, and a blue haze hangs in the air from cigars.
(Narrator_) Men cluster in groups, talking and laughing with each other, now that the women are out of the way ;)
* Boden will walk semi-casual over to Kalman.
* Falke follows the men and tries to feel like he belongs there with all these rich people.
(Pavo) (And us guard-dates :D)
(Kalman) (Let me know if I see Falke ;)
* Falke wonders how long it will be before people he knows recognize him.
(Narrator_)
(Kalman, you do see him, now that you're in a smaller crowd)
* Falke wonders how he will tell them to pretend he's not the person they know.
(Falke) . o O (Whee!)
* Falke looks around for the men he knows. It would be convenient if they were all talking in a group so he could tell them all at once.
* Kalman nod to Boden as he approaches, and then blinks
* Boden will stand by Kalman, and look at who else is in that group.
* Pavo is off floating with Adrus
* Falke scratches his head in his familiar "I'm not exactly comfortable here" gesture and accepts a cigar from a servant.
(Kalman) ....is that Falke?
* Kalman says to Boden, sounding a bit surprised
* Falke manages not to eye it dubiously and lights up.
* Falke looks fab in his grey and green finery, I hope. ;^)
(Narrator_) (He does look surprisingly well-dressed :)
* Falke takes a drag and manages not to choke but decides that the cigar will just be prop from now on.
(Boden) umm....yes
* Falke looks around. does he notice them staring at him?
(Kalman) ...Pavo is here too...
* Boden will take a cigar from the servant.
(Boden) Thats good.
(Kalman) But I wonder what he is doing here.
(Boden) Do you smoke Kalman?
(Kalman) I didn't see him earlier
(Kalman) occasionally
(Boden) Pavo?
* Kalman does have a cigar
(Kalman) Falke.
* Boden will light up my cigar.
(Kalman) Pavo is here with someone
(Boden) Why wouldn't Falke be here?
(Narrator_) (Falke, you do notice them looking in your direction and talking)]
* Falke saunters over to Kalman and Boden.
(Falke) Good evening, gentlemen.
* Boden smokes the cigar with our dificulty. He has done this before.
(Boden) Hi, good to see you here.
* Falke takes another drag on the cigar, against his better judgment. ^-^
* Kalman seems comfortable with the scene as well
(Kalman) Goodevening, Falke
(Kalman) I ca't say I was expecting to see you here this evening
* Pavo wonders if it's expected of him to smoke...
(Falke) I get around.
* Falke shrugs.
(Narrator_) (Cigars are offered, but not mandatory, Pavo :)
* Pavo will probably decline, then :)
(Kalman) Apparently
(Falke) I'm related to the Aubins, you know.
* Falke says with a sparkle in his eye.
(Boden) who are they?
(Kalman) Oh.... are you?
(Kalman) (Do I know who they are?)
(Kalman) You learn something new every day.
(Narrator_) (Some Wolf nobles.. you know they are very numerous :)
(Narrator_) (but not very prominent ;)
(Kalman) . o O ( why is Falke here, and why is he being shifty? )
(Kalman) I didn't think this was your type of affair
(Falke) How little you know me.
(Boden) well...its not really my thing either.
* Kalman raises an eyebrow
(Kalman) (How out of place/uncomfortable does Falke seem?)
* Falke feigns disappointment/sorrow but his lips quirk in a smile. He isn't trying to pull the wool over your eyes.
(Kalman) (okay, fine, but I'm still curious/suspicious)
(Kalman) hmmm
(Kalman) are you here alone, then?
(Falke) Quite alone...
* Falke looks regretful.
(Boden) no date?
(Falke) Most ladies don't even know I exist.
(Boden) You might have some luck with Pavo's lady.
(Kalman) ...
* Falke tugs at his collar a bit again.
* Boden says sugestivly
(Falke) I doubt it.
* Kalman smirks
(Kalman) As do I.
(Falke) Thank you for your charitable thoughts, though, Boden.
* Falke smiles.
(Boden) Well...if she was here with Pavo...she probably isn't leaving with Pavo....
* Falke is hiding his discomfort well.
(Kalman) Pavo is here with Adrius Valenze
(Falke) (If you didn't know him you might not realize he is not comfortable)
(Falke) (Do I recognize the name?)
(Kalman) (Youd probably recognize it as a *male* name ;)
(Falke) (that's what I thought)
(Boden) They came together? I thought that was some sort of political no-no,
(Narrator_) (THat, yes, and the Valenze's are Cat, but other than that, no)
(Boden) I figured he'd have a token date or something.
(Kalman) it's a party, not court
(Falke) Hmmm... not my type of lady.
* Kalman shrugs
* Falke grins.
(Boden) I didn't realise there was a big difference when it came to the upperty ups.
(Pavo) (Actally, we might have been with his sisters, when you met us... ask Julie)
(Narrator_) (His sisters were both there, but there was no obvious "This is my date" sign ;)
(Kalman) They did come with Adrius's sisters, however
(Narrator_) (If that was the case, Antenia must have been Adrius's date ;)
(Falke) Well... House Cat.
* Falke says with a slight hint of disapproval.
(Falke) Also not my type of lady.
(Kalman) technically he may have been with Liese or Antenia
(Boden) I see...so your a big on the in house thing?
(Pavo) (*claws Falke's eyes out*)
* Falke is arrogant for a po' boy.
* Boden looks at Falke odly.
(Boden) I supose you'll find someone eventually.
(Kalman) . o O ( probably not here )
* Falke nods.
(Falke) That's the hope.
(Falke) Did you bring ladies?
* Falke asks Kalman and Boden.
(Kalman) Not myself no...
* Kalman grins at Boden, though
(Boden) I'm here with Couramance
* Falke raises an eyebrow.
(Boden) crap...I guess I should be using her title and stuff, right?
(Kalman) (That ought to make you shoot port out your nose ;)
(Falke) The Lady Silveira?
* Falke chokes on cigar smoke.
(Boden) Is that it?
* Kalman nods
(Narrator_) (It's sort of like Rob saying "I'm here with Nicole Kidman" ;)
(Pavo) (Now there's a painful thought... that or meade.)
(Boden) ok...so the lady Silveira then.
(Falke) Well... good on you, mate.
(Boden) thanks
* Falke 's voice cracks slightly.
(Boden) (Julie, someday I hope to say that.)
(Narrator_) (:)
(Falke) A friend of mine told me to stay clear of Princesses, though... be careful.
(Boden) everyone seems to know her.
(Boden) I don't think she's a princess.
* Kalman shakes his head
(Falke) I was speaking figuratively.
(Kalman) But I'd still be careful
* Falke smiles at Boden.
(Boden) And a friend of mine once told me you can get in as much trouble saying no to women as saying yes.
* Kalman grins again
* Kalman is trying to be relaxed
(Falke) So, Kalman.
(Kalman) yes?
* Boden seems to have relaxed quite a bit, now that he has friends.
(Falke) How long do I have to stand about here inhaling this vile air before we return to the company of the fairer sex?
(Kalman) hmmm...
(Narrator_) (We can get on to the dancing part, if you're done talking :)
(Kalman) (good question, Julie?)
(Kalman) Not much longer, I expect
(Falke) Excellent.
* Kalman swallows the last bit of whatever in his glass
(Falke) There were a few beauties.
* Falke smiles.
(Narrator_) (Yah know, it's just to give the sexes enough time to fart and burp in private ;)
* Falke doesn't at all expect to take up with any of them.
* Falke knows his place. ;^D
(Pavo) (Um...ewww)
(Narrator_) Eventually, the music picks up and the two groups rejoin in the ballroom for dancing.
(Falke) By the way, tonight I am Marcel Aubin. A country boy. If you feel the need to introduce me to anyone.
* Boden will leave his cigar out on the patio.
(Boden) (have I seen Devilas yet?)
(Narrator_) (nope)
(Narrator_) Falke, you pay particular attention to the women, scanning the crowd for one with the distinctive blossoms of a blue amaryllis in her hair. As many are wearing flowers, this process takes you some time.
(Boden) why Falke?
* Falke also leaves his cigar behind in an ashtray sort of thing if they have them.
(Narrator_) (there are big stone urns for that purpose :)
(Falke) Well Boden, unlike you I don't have beautiful noblewomen inviting me to these affairs.
(Falke) And since I am common, I have to pretend to be someone else just to get in.
* Boden seems confused.
(Boden) ok, whatever turns your crank.
* Falke smiles.
* Pavo does cast a discrete glance towards the cuter
(noble)men in attendance...
(Falke) Thanks.
* Boden will go find Couramance again.
(Narrator_) (If we were live, I'd play some music for you now, but you'll just have to imagine a string quartet playing walzes and such :)
(Kalman) I'll keep it in mind, Marcel
* Falke will talk to other ladies before approaching the target.
(Kalman) (are they good? Anyone I know? ;)
(Falke) Thank you also, Kalman.
(Narrator_) Falke, eventually, you spot one standing alone. Tall and willowy, with light brown hair bound in a net that appears to be made of delicate vines, and a single amaryllis, pale blue streaked with white, for decoration.
(Narrator_) (They are indeed good, Kalman, and you probably know them by reputation at least ;)
(Narrator_) You recognize her as the woman you saw in Pearl City getting out of a carriage with the man who may have been Izaguirre.
(Kalman) (groove on)
(Falke) (I thought that might be the case.)
* Amaryllis_woman smiles at you as you approach, and you realize suddenly that she is stunningly beautiful.
* Falke makes his way over to her eventually, after flirting with other pretty ladies.
* Falke can't help but smile back.
* Falke bows to the woman who is probably Althea Dark.
(Amaryllis_woman) Good evening, sir.
* Amaryllis_woman says in a warm tone
(Falke) Good evening, lady. I couldn't help but notice you here alone... the most stunning creature in the room.
* Narrator_ smiles, looking a bit dubious at your claims
(Narrator_) (arr, you know what I mean ;)
* Amaryllis_woman smiles, rather
(Amaryllis_woman) And who might you be, good sir?
(Falke) I am Marcel Aubin... I doubt you have heard of me.
* Amaryllis_woman arches an eyebrow
(Amaryllis_woman) Indeed...
(Amaryllis_woman) My own name is Althea.
* Amaryllis_woman is now known as Althea
(Althea) Are you enjoying the party so far?
(Falke) Hmmm... I must admit I'm a bit uncomfortable... I'm not used to such grandiose affairs.
(Falke) And you?
(Althea) Once the crowd starts to disperse, I'll be in my element, I imagine.
(Althea) Do you plan on staying late, Marcel?
* Althea says, looking at you from under lowered eyelashes
(Falke) I might... depending on what circumstances arise.
* Althea smiles at that
* Falke replies, also a bit coy.
* Falke smiles to Althea, his green eyes sparkling.
(Falke) (What colour are her eyes?)
(Narrator_)
(a blue-green)
(Falke) (pretty.)
(Falke) Are you here for a reason then? Some handsome lord you've set your sights upon, maybe?
* Falke teases.
(Althea) No... But I do enjoy a nice party.
(Narrator_) The dancing will continue for about two hours, and people gradually drift away, whether to home or elsewhere.
* Eglorine wonders if Kalman will ask her to dance... ;)
* Couramance certainly dances with Boden, of course
(Falke) Indeed... so many things to admire.
* Althea nods
* Falke glances for a moment at a lady particularly adorned with gems.
* Boden enjoys Dancing with Couramance, and relaxes a bit as the night progress
* Pavo wonders if he gets to dance with Adrius *sniffle*...
(Falke) Do you come to these events often?
(Pavo) (*probably has to dance with his sisters):|)
(Narrator_) As the night goes on, Pavo, the ...shall we say, social conventions, seem to become rather more... relaxed.
* Kalman will, in fact, but not right off
(Althea) Whenever I get the chance... though there are few events that rival Loick's parties, outside the court, at least.
* Kalman will dance with some people just to be polite, but will *definitely* dance with Eglorine
* Eglorine is very happy to dance with Kalman :)
* Kalman will probably dancer with her more than once, if he can get away with it ;D
(Falke) (Whether he was looking at the gems or the lady is open for Althea to interpret...)
(Kalman) (no Davilass all night? I'm worried ):|)
(Narrator_) I'm sure you can - many people are beyond noticing :)
(Narrator_) No, no Davilas all night.
(Kalman) (Yay! More time with her the better, though, I am worried that davilass is not showing up ):|)
(Boden) (How is Couramance behaving as the night wears on?)
(Narrator_) Couples slip away as the night wears on, out into the gardens or upstairs, or off in their own carriages.
* Falke doesn't wish to wear on Althea but must try to get more information!
* Couramance seems quite relaxed and happy, and gets a bit more touchy-feely as the night goes on
* Althea doesn't seem bored with him yet
* Falke flirts with her a bit then, and talks to her, subtly trying to find out more about her and what she's doing here tonight.
* Kalman wonders if he can get away with slipping off somewhere with Eglorine ;)
(Narrator_) (Could we carry on with that conversation in Bodenporn, so that I can do other things at the same time? I'm just worried about time...)
* Eglorine would be willing ;)
(Falke) (which conversation?)
(Narrator_) (yours, with Althea)
(Falke) (OK)
(Kalman) (well, then, seems like a plan to me ;D)
* Eglorine and Kalman slip away into the park, then, for an evening under the stars :)
* Couramance will eventually try to lead Boden upstairs, if he's willing to go
* Kalman will have a good time, but in the back of his mind is a niggling worry.... I'm sure Eglorine provides plenty of distraction, however ;)
* Eglorine certainly does
* Boden is very willing
* Couramance leads him into a bedroom, then.
(Couramance) (where you are later joined by some other people... ;)
(Boden) They don't mind if we borrow a room then?
(Couramance) Loick won't mind at all.
(Couramance) I'm sure he'll be up later.
(Boden) (are there men and women in the group...or mostly women?)
(Couramance) (both)
* Boden is ok with all of that...but isn't really interested in hanky panky with men.)
(Narrator_) (No, but Couramance is ;)
(Boden) (does she get it on with women as well...and is it ok if she shares me with other women?)
(Narrator_) (You'll find out all about it in due time :)
* Falke will pull out all his guns to get information from her... not sure what would apply, if anything... bluff, diplomacy, gather information...
(Narrator_) (I'll take that into consideration :)
(Falke) (plus his natural charm... ^-^)
(Althea) (:)
(Althea) (What do you want to ask her?)
(Belden) (charm, smarm...)
(Falke) Do you come to these events often?
(Althea) Fairly often.
* Althea smiles
* Falke bows his head and smiles.
(Althea) And you?
(Falke) Maybe I'll have to find a way to come more often myself, then.
(Althea) I'm surprised I haven't see you before, actually.
* Falke looks at Althea through his lashes.
(Althea) I'm sure I would have noticed...
(Althea) ...someone as handsome as you.
(Falke) . o O (No you wouldn't, liar. I'm not handsome. ^-^)
(Falke) Well, I'm not usually in a position to come.
(Althea) No?
(Althea) Why not?
(Falke) No... I'm not anyone very important in the grand scheme of things.
* Althea chuckles
(Falke) Aubins are numerous as rats in the sewers.
* Falke grins.
* Althea laughs out loud at that
* Falke grins wider.
(Althea) Well, my little sewer rat, do you dance?
(Falke) Rarely. I wouldn't wish to embarrass you, my lady. But... if you insist... how could one such as I refuse?
* Althea will dance with you, then
* Falke tries to think of how to get more information out of her... she is here on a job, I'm pretty sure... :^P
(Althea) :)
(Falke) (but what?)
(Althea) (After you finish a few dances, during which you manage to avoid falling on your face, at least, she speaks to you again)
(Althea) You dance well
(Falke) (I do have a high Dex so I ought not to make too great a fool of myself.)
(Falke) Thank you. It was my first try, too.
* Falke grins.
(Althea) Very impressive, then.
* Falke laughs.
* Falke runs his hand through his hair nervously.
* Althea reaches out and runs her fingers through your hair as well
* Falke smiles.
(Althea) No need to be nervous...
(Falke) No?
(Althea) Not at all
* Althea leans in and kisses you
* Falke kisses her back and hopes he doesn't get a dagger in his back.
(Althea) (no, just a very pleasant kiss)
(Falke) . o O (Must... keep up... the facade. Yes, that's it.)
* Falke pulls back eventually and regards her seriously, green eyes searching hers.
* Althea smiles
(Falke) (q) My lady... I am not so sure that this is wise.
(Althea) No?
(Althea) What is wise?
* Althea grins slyly
(Falke) (q) I think... that you are here for a reason. Aren't you?
(Althea) Just as you are.
(Falke) Well... it wouldn't do for us to get distracted from our tasks, now, would it?
(Althea) What if distraction serves our tasks?
(Falke) ...
(Falke) . o O (Am I her task, then... :^P )
* Althea runs a finger down your neck gently
* Falke looks uncertain.
* Falke doesn't want to die. ;^D
* Althea toys with your hair teasingly
* Falke is curious... if he *is
* her task, and he finds that hard to believe... he wonders what he's done to attract interest.
* Falke weighs his options.
* Falke reaches up and runs his hand through her hair.
(Falke) . o O (What the hell. I have my dagger, if necessary...)
(Althea) (Some tendrils of her hair fall down in your hands)
* Falke leans forward to kiss her back and wonders what the next few hours of his future will hold. Hopefully they won't be his last.
(Althea) (indeed :)
(Falke) Where to, then, my lady Dark?
(Althea) Hm...
* Althea doesn't comment on your use of the name ;)
(Althea) I hear the park here is pleasant...
* Falke was hoping to put her off guard but hides his worries. ^-^
(Falke) (My wisdom is only 10, after all...)
(Althea) (heh)
* Falke holds his elbow out to her and smiles, but he is perhaps a bit guarded.
* Althea takes your arm
* Falke heads out to the garden with her and is now at her mercy.
(Althea) (rrowr)
(Falke) (later we find out that we are in fact half-siblings! j/k)
(Althea) (heh)
(Falke) (my momma doesn't strike me as a ho, or the kind of woman Taran would have done anything with. ^-^)
(Althea) (No, that would be a bit unlikely :)
(Falke) (Yes, I know.)
(Falke) (But I take a perverse pleasure out of the idea. ^-^)
(Althea) (:)
(Falke) (I'll continue trying to get information from her if possible
(when it doesn't interfere with other things) )
(Althea) (heh - so dutiful :)
(Falke) (Well... i am a workaholic.)
(Althea) (*snick*)
(Falke) (Anyway, I'll just ask interested questions as if I thought the "relationship" might go further than a one-night stand.)
(Falke) (After we have fun. If I'm still alive.)
(Kalman) (heh)
(Kalman) (fun = sex ;D)
(Althea) (heh)
(Narrator_) Okay, we'll move on to Loch now...
(Narrator_) Loch, the affairs of noblemen and festivities concern you little. Instead, you are merely pleased with the chance to have a day off and spend some time with Jenai.
* Jenai suggests a walk along the riverside markets of the Place D'Iena, since the weather is clear and fine.
(Loch)
(That should be entertaining)
* Loch agrees whole heartedly
(Narrator_) The markets are busy, filled with scents of cooking meat, spices and perfumes, and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
* Loch will find a nice snack for the two of us to eat while we walk
(Narrator_) You can certainly get some nice food to carry and eat.
* Loch will, of course, offer little bits to Willam as well
* Willam accepts them happily
(Willam) :grassnicewarmstretchrunrunhappy:
* Willam conveys the idea to you that he would like to get out and run around in some nice grassy area, if possible.
* Loch will let him down to run
* Willam scampers happily in the long grass near the edge of the river, hunting small insects, while you talk to Jenai.
(Jenai) Have you been busy at work lately?
(Loch) Willam is definitly enjoying this walk, and so am I
* Jenai smiles happily
(Jenai) So am I.
(Loch) No more than usual
(Loch) You?
* Jenai shrugs
(Jenai) It's not bad...
(Loch) something troubling you?
* Jenai shakes her head
(Jenai) No, it's nothing. I just have a funny feeling...
(Willam) :eek!ouch!darkandwetscaredscaredhelp:
* Loch looks for willam... where is he?
* Willam is nowhere to be seen, but he can't have gotten far.
(Loch) Willam is in trouble.
* Loch starts to track him down.
* Jenai will help you look, concerned
(Narrator_) You search around for a while in the long grass. Soon, without too much difficulty, you find a small round hole, which you suppose Willam might have fallen down.
(Jenai) It's a vent shaft for the old sewers...
* Jenai says with concern in her voice.
(Loch) Is there an entrance near by
* Jenai nods
(Jenai) Don't worry, I can find a way in. I know those paths like the back of my hand.
* Loch will try to send to William "I am coming for you"
(Loch) Lets go
(Willam) :meep:
* Jenai leads you to the riverbank itself and scans the shore in both directions. She points left.
(Jenai) There's an entrance down that way. We should be able to reach him from there without too much trouble.
(Loch) (am I armed... I suspect all I have is a dagger)
(Jenai) (Yes, that would be about it)
* Loch will cast light on the dagger and head in
* Jenai approaches the large pipe entrance, much like the one where you fought the spider-creature a few months ago. The dark entrance seems somehow ominous.
(Jenai) Do you want me to lead the way?
(Loch) please do, you know them better than I
(Narrator_) The pipe is wide enough for you to walk single-file, Jenai leading the way.
(Narrator_) The dark, dank environment, and especially the sounds of rodents scurrying just out of range of your vision, reminds you uncomfortably of your strange dreams.
(Narrator_) The pipe branches off into three directions. Jenai unhesitatingly chooses the left one, though it is narrower and a small rivulet of not-water flows down it.
(Loch) Be careful, I have a bad feeling about this as well...
(Narrator_) You are now having to bend over to make your way down the tunnel, though Jenai is not.
* Jenai murmurs an agreement
(Narrator_) After walking in a crouch for some distance, an even narrower tunnel branches off to either side, while the main tunnel continues straight ahead.
(Jenai) I'll go ahead down here... I don't know if you'll be able to fit, and even if you can, it'll just make it hard for me to back out once I have him safely. I'll just be a few minutes...
(Loch) (Can I get a feel of how far away from Willam we are?)
* Jenai whispers to you
(Narrator_) (Not too far... )
(Loch) Take the dagger, I'll conjure another light
* Jenai nods and takes the dagger
* Loch will cast another light for himself
* Jenai heads away down the even smaller tunnel, crawling.
(Narrator_) You can hear Jenai moving slowly up the passage to your left, crawling on her hands and knees, though the sound grows more distant with every second that passes.
* Loch will also cast detect magic so I can keep a little track of Jenai
(Narrator_) You wait alone. The walls of the tunnel are stone slick with ancient moss, but you notice that they are carved with a smoothness and skill not often found in something never intended to be seen.
(Narrator_) A few cracks mar the surface, but otherwise the sewer is very solidly built.
(Narrator_) Suddenly, from behind you, you hear another noise - a skittering of claws.
* Loch turns to face the noise
(Narrator_) At first you see nothing, but then a strange sight meets your eyes.
(Narrator_) As if from nowhere, you see a woman.
* Woman 's resemblance to Jenai is so striking that at first you wonder how she could have gotten behind you, but you know in your gut that this is not her.
* Loch is suprised
* Woman stands at her full height in the tunnel without having to bend over, so she is shorter than you by several inches. Her hair glints red in the light, short and spiky, and she wears a gown made of white furs, strangely clean in the grime of the sewer.
(Loch) Who are you?
* Woman 's age is difficult to judge - she could be fifteen or thirty.
(Narrator_) With a growing sense of déja vu, you realize that her right eye is a cloudy white. A light seems to flicker in that eye that has no visible source.
* Woman clutches with her left hand a pendant hanging around her neck.
(Woman) Miért ugye gyakran látogat álmaim?
* Loch says, mentally preparing to defend himself with magic.
* Woman has a soft, pleasing voice, and though you have no idea what she is saying, you get the sense you are being asked a question.
* Loch will shake his head
(Loch) I don't understand what you are saying
(Woman) Ti si zgodan covjek.
(Narrator_) You can hear Jenai moving back down the tunnel, and get a sense of relief from Willam.
(Woman) Moj sestra htijenai povratak. Moram otici u.
* Loch listens carefully to the words
* Woman says with a smile, showing white teeth.
(Woman) Mi cemo sresti ponovo.
* Loch will shake his head again and point to his mouth
* Woman almost whispers
* Woman backs out of the range of your light and seems to vanish.
* Loch will concentrate, trying to imbed the words in his memory
(Loch) (or at least the sound of them)
(Narrator_) (okay, you can try to do so)
* Jenai emerges out into the main tunnel, covered with dirt and grim, but carrying Willam
(Willam) :happyhappysafenicegirlandmaster:
* Loch is relieved to see her and Willam
(Jenai) Got him...
(Jenai) I don't think he's hurt, just shaken up.
(Loch) Thank you
(Jenai) Now, let's get out of here...
* Loch will take Willam from Jenai, placing him on his should
(Loch) Yes, lets
* Jenai will lead the way out, then.
* Jenai emerges out into the light, keeping her eyes narrowed
* Loch will say once outside...
(Loch) I saw... something while I was waiting for you.
(Jenai) What, a rat?
(Loch) ... more like someone.
* Jenai brushes dirt from her knees
(Jenai) Some*one*?
* Loch will help her
(Loch) A woman... with red hair dressed in furs.
* Jenai heads to the riverbank to wash herself off, though she's still listening to you.
(Jenai) A woman?
* Jenai splashes some water over her head.
(Jenai) There are some people who work in the sewers.. toshers and the like.
* Loch will clean himself off as much as possible.
(Loch) I doubt it was one of them... this woman spoke in a language I had never heard.
(Jenai) Oh?
(Loch) ... and she looked...
* Loch pauses, thinking
* Jenai washes her boots off in the river
(Jenai) ...Looked...?
(Loch) ... nothing... just reminded me of something I read.
(Jenai) What, some magic thing?
(Loch) She vanished like a shadow... yes magic.
* Jenai 's hair is dripping from the river water
(Jenai) Hm.
(Jenai) Strange.
* Loch will brush it out of her face
(Loch) Do you have bad feelings often?
* Jenai flicks you with some water, playfully
(Jenai) Once in a while.
* Loch will splash her back
* Jenai giggles
* Jenai lowers her eyes
* Loch smiles
(Jenai) We're pretty dirty... maybe we should get cleaned up.
(Loch) Sounds like a good suggestion
* Jenai smiles and pulls off her shirt without warning ;)
* Jenai strips off the rest of her clothes and wades out into the river
* Loch blushes a bit, a little self conscious, but will then follow suit
* Jenai 's body is wiry and fit, with pale skin. Not a beauty in the conventional sense, but still...
* Loch isnt complaining
* Jenai doesn't seem embarassed, and the long grass at the shore should hide you from any passers-by ;)
* Willam scampers happily in the grass again, quite ignorant :)
* Loch is embarressed, but decides to let go and have fun
(Narrator_) (I will move on to Belden, then, if that's okay ;)
(Loch) (sure)
(Narrator_) Belden: you and Brother Butler have worked hard on transcribing and interpreting crumbling documents in the Athenaeum's closed collection in order to prevent that precious information from being lost.
(Narrator_) Your presentation to the Ostraka will be in a little over a week's time, at the beginning of Fifth-month. You often work late into the night in order to make sure you will be ready in time.
(Narrator_) On the evening of the 21st, as you are working, Brother Butler enters the room where you sit at a table, copying a document carefully.
(Belden) this will mean so much to them!
* Belden copies it dutifully.
* Brother_Butler sighs and sits down near the fireplace, where no fire is currently burning.
* Belden looks up.
* Brother_Butler rubs the back of his neck.
(Belden) Is something troubling you, Brother?
(Brother_Butler) Oh, it's nothing serious. I'm just tired. Keeping this place running is a bit more work than I had anticipated.
(Brother_Butler) I've just returned from a meeting with Princess Ombretta. She's just told me that we won't be receiving as much money this year as we had been promised.
* Belden puts down her quill.
(Belden) They don't understand how important this work is...
* Brother_Butler sighs again.
(Brother_Butler) You're right.
(Belden) ...
* Brother_Butler stands and comes over to look at your work.
(Brother_Butler) I appreciate your help, Pasith. I wish there were a hundred more clerics like you.
(Brother_Butler) This is excellent.
* Brother_Butler says, smiling
(Belden) Thank you.
* Belden says humbly.
(Brother_Butler) Would you like to come for a walk? I could use some fresh air, and you could probably use a break.
(Belden) Alright... I am feeling a little stiff.
* Belden stands up and stretches.
* Brother_Butler leads you out of the dark walls of the library and the two of you walk along a narrow trail you had never noticed before. It leads through a lightly wooded area. White stones that emit a faint glow line the way.
(Brother_Butler) Are you happy at work these days?
(Belden) Here?
(Brother_Butler) Well, that too, but I meant in the guard.
(Belden) Oh... well...
(Brother_Butler) I just know you had been having some problems...
* Brother_Butler says a bit tentatively
* Belden looks down at her shoulder.
(Belden) Let's just say I wasn't able to follow your advice as I should have...
(Brother_Butler) Oh?
* Brother_Butler inquires gently
(Belden) My mouth got me into trouble again... There was some tension.
(Brother_Butler) ...
(Brother_Butler) Do you want to talk about it?
(Belden) They were talking about, well, prostitutes...
* Belden sighs.
(Brother_Butler) And?
(Belden) Well, you know how I feel...
* Brother_Butler nods
(Brother_Butler) You have such high standards.. you know, even I look up to you for that reason.
(Belden) I think it's a sad testament to the state of our society that people are reduced to commodities... And even sadder that things are so far gone that most don't even understand what's happening to them...
(Belden) Others in my party did not agree...
* Brother_Butler nods sadly
(Belden) I didn't know why he had to go and make it so personal... But Boden told me he has friends who are... in that business...
(Brother_Butler) Ah...
(Belden) Anyway... I should have just kept my mouth shut.
(Belden) -_-
(Belden) It's finally being pounded into my head... People don't want to hear about what I have to say.
(Brother_Butler) You know you can always speak your mind to me, at least.
(Belden) And for that I'm grateful...
* Brother_Butler smiles
* Belden smiles back.
(Brother_Butler) You should smile more often...
(Belden) Hm, that's what my cousin says...
* Brother_Butler says softly
(Brother_Butler) Well, your cousin is clearly a man of intelligence, then.
(Belden) He is!
* Belden says proudly.
(Brother_Butler) It lights up your entire face.
(Belden) Uh... it does?
* Brother_Butler nods
* Belden raises her fingers to her lips self consciously.
(Brother_Butler) I respect you so much, Pasith. I just... I don't always say it enough, perhaps.
* Brother_Butler seems almost shy.
(Belden) Well, thank you...
(Brother_Butler) And...
(Brother_Butler) And you’re very beautiful, too.
* Brother_Butler says, looking away, nervously
* Belden blinks in surprise.
(Belden) I...
(Brother_Butler) I'm sorry...
(Brother_Butler) I shouldn't have said anything.
(Belden) I'm just... I didn't expect...
* Belden bites down on her loewr lip uncomfortably.
(Brother_Butler) Please, don't...
(Belden) Don't what?
(Brother_Butler) ...
* Belden doesn't realize what she's doing; it's a nervous habit.
(Brother_Butler) Don't laugh at me.
(Belden) ... Laugh?
(Brother_Butler) I thought you were going to laugh...you were biting your lip...
(Belden) I could never laugh at you...
(Belden) Oh...
* Belden touches her mouth again.
(Brother_Butler) I shouldn't have said anything.
* Brother_Butler repeats
(Brother_Butler) Please, forgive my presumption.
(Belden) It's alright... I mean... there's nothing to forgive.
(Brother_Butler) No?
(Brother_Butler) I've made you uncomfortable...maybe jeopardized our relationship...
(Brother_Butler) I'm a fool.
(Belden) Don't say things like that!
* Belden furrows her eyebrows.
* Brother_Butler looks quite unhappy himself
(Belden) I don't think any less of you... I don't want to stop working here, or stop being friends... I just...
(Belden) I mean, you surprised me, and I don't know what to say...
(Brother_Butler) Well, it's been a long time since I said anything like that.. perhaps I did it the wrong way.
(Belden) It's been a long time since anyone said anything like that to me.
(Brother_Butler) Really?
(Brother_Butler) I mean, I'm a bit surprised, that's all.
(Belden) I can't remember...
(Belden) It must have been when I was still in the guard, or maybe before, even.
(Brother_Butler) When you were 15 or so?
* Belden nods...
(Brother_Butler) So young...
(Brother_Butler) Was it someone you cared about?
(Belden) Well, I thought I did.
* Brother_Butler smiles slightly
(Belden) But... I was only fifteen, you know.
(Brother_Butler) I was once too, a long time ago. I can remember what it was like...
(Brother_Butler) Vaguely.
* Brother_Butler says with a smile
(Belden) Sometimes, when I try to recall those days, it seems like it was a different person...
(Brother_Butler) Maybe you were, in a way.
* Belden says wistfully.
(Belden) I didn't know anything.
(Brother_Butler) Most 15-year-olds don't...
(Belden) Heh...
(Brother_Butler) But we get older, and hopefully wiser.
(Brother_Butler) Hopefully.
(Belden) Yes, hopefully...
* Belden smiles a bit...
(Brother_Butler) Sometimes I wonder about myself, though.
* Brother_Butler says, smiling
(Brother_Butler) Apparently I can still put my foot in my mouth as well as I could back then.
(Belden) Oh... I was hoping that would go away.
(Belden) :/
(Brother_Butler) Maybe for some people it does, but I doubt it...
(Brother_Butler) As long as we can speak, we can say things the wrong way...
* Belden sighs.
(Brother_Butler) For example, I probably should have said "Pasith, I care for you deeply."
(Brother_Butler) That would have been better, maybe.
(Brother_Butler) Maybe.
* Belden smiles a bit, shyly...
(Belden) How... how long had you been waiting to tell me?
* Brother_Butler smiles back
(Brother_Butler) I'm not sure...
(Brother_Butler) I didn't notice at first, and then I tried to push it aside for a while...
(Brother_Butler) And then I was too shy to say anything...
(Brother_Butler) And it never seemed like the right time.
* Brother_Butler shrugs
* Belden nods...
(Belden) Well...
* Brother_Butler looks up, a bit hopefully
(Belden) I... I need to think about things...
* Brother_Butler nods quickly
(Brother_Butler) I understand, of course.
(Brother_Butler) Take all the time you need.
(Belden) I'm feeling so confused... I...
* Belden shakes her head, as thought to clear it, then looks up with a bit of a pleading expression.
(Belden) But please promise me... no matter what, we'll still be friends...
(Brother_Butler) Of course, sister.
(Brother_Butler) I never want to stop being friends with you.
(Brother_Butler) Not for the rest of my days.
(Belden) You mean so much to me.
* Brother_Butler looks like he might like to hug you, but he hesitates
* Belden will hug him, then.
* Brother_Butler hugs you back
(Belden) (how tall is he? my npc sheet just says, 'tall')
(Brother_Butler) (he would be perhaps 5'10 or 5'11)
(Narrator_) Okay, we will move on to Kalman
(Narrator_) The 21st is also the eve of Ivona's 15th birthday party, the day when she will officially become a grown woman.
(Narrator_) The vak Andras home is abuzz with activity as the hour of the celebrations grows near. The gardens have been lined with lanterns, so that the party can continue long into the night.
(Narrator_) Guests begin arriving before sunset, and Kalman is required to stand and greet them with his parents (though not Ivona, who will make her entrance later).
* Tristane stands with you, as befits your escort, and amuses you by making snide comments under her breath about the guests.
* Kalman tries not to smirk when people are looking
* Tristane looks quite presentable, actually, in a simple evening gown of brown and green (the family colours of the Dizon clan). A golden brooch shaped like a curled lizard with emerald eyes nestles at her neckline.
* Kalman is spiffily dressed, in house colours as well (Blue and grey)
* Tristane at least greets her sister Sekia warmly, as she and her husband, Achilas Kauzlarich, the Count of Birka, arrive.
* Sekia is by far the more beautiful of the two sisters, with high cheekbones, long wavy blonde hair and green eyes. She is dressed in an ornate gown of dark and light purples.
* Sekia and her husband greet you as well, of course :)
(Kalman) (I would hope ;)
* Kalman greets them, of course
* Sekia and Achilas move on to allow other guests to come in, but there is a bit of a hold-up as some old woman is talking your mother's ear off ;)
(Kalman) (any idea who she is?)
(Tristane) (w) Riane Menomonie.
* Tristane says, answering your unasked question ;)
(Kalman) ahhh...
(Kalman) (does the name mean anything to me?)
(Tristane) (she's the matriarch of the Lizards, basically)
(Tristane) (w) My great-aunt or some such thing...
(Tristane) (w) She's a blabbermouth.
* Tristane says with a grin
(Tristane) (w) We could be here a while...
(Kalman) (w) hurray...
(Tristane) (w) Sekia looked good, though, don't you think?
* Tristane says, making small-talk
* Kalman glances at who is behind this blabbermouth
* Kalman nods
(Narrator_) Behind Riane are Liuna Menomonie and Jevain Deverara...
(Kalman) (w) she did, yes, and her husband...
(Tristane) (w) THey always look good... it's quite sickening, really.
(Kalman) (w) I had heard the two of you didn't get aong very well, though?
* Tristane shrugs
(Kalman) (w) some people don't have anything better to do, I suppose
(Tristane) (w) She thinks I should be doing better things with my life, like getting married to some nobleman with a great big stiff... upper lip.
* Kalman smirks
(Tristane) (w) And popping out loads of babies, of course.
(Tristane) (w) Gods forbid I should do something useful with my time.
(Kalman) (w) of course, I know exactly what you mean...
* Tristane nods sympathetically
(Narrator_) The line finally starts to move again, and the old woman is now in front of you...
(Kalman) (w) I'm not expected to pop out any children *myself
* at least, though...
* Kalman says just before she arrives, hopefully ;)
(Riane) Oh goodness, I haven't seen you since you were this tall, Kalman.
* Riane says, apparently either not hearing or ignoring your comment ;)
* Kalman smiles
(Riane) You've grown up into a handsome young man.
* Riane pats you on the cheek
(Kalman) Thank you, though I'll have to admit that my memory isn't as sharp as yours
* Tristane surpresses a snort.
(Kalman) (I'd use her title, but I don't know it)
(Riane) Well, you can't be expected to remember everything, my dear.
(Riane) (She's the Duchess of Quatern)
(Kalman) I'm sure I had my mind on other things at the time... likely where my next new toy was coming from ;)
(Riane) No doubt, no doubt.
* Riane says kindly, and moves on to torment Tristane for a while.
(Narrator_) As I said, Liuna and Jevain are next in line, together.
(Narrator_) Together, these cousins are considered the most promising candidates for the throne of the Empire.
* Liuna has chin-length blonde hair and is quite pretty
* Kalman will greet them appropriately
* Jevain has long dark curls tied back and is tall and slender
* Jevain holds Liuna's arm as they greet you warmly
* Kalman is in a good mood, this evening, and is being more naturally friendly
* Jevain and Liuna are held up by Riane in front of them, of course ;)
(Kalman) (heh)
(Jevain) How goes the guards, Kalman?
(Liuna) Yes, do you enjoy it?
(Kalman) I do, yes...
(Kalman) It's very interesting, sometimes more than others, of course
* Liuna nods
(Liuna) I found the Castalia was like that...
(Kalman) It is a very different way to experience the city
* Kalman nods
(Jevain) I'm sure it must be...
(Kalman) What did you study at the Castalia?
* Kalman asks Liuna
(Liuna) Sorcery.
(Liuna) It was very rewarding, though hard work.
* Kalman nods
(Kalman) My aunt says the same thing
(Kalman) (I assume she is here, somewhere... is she in the greeting line?)
(Liuna) Oh yes, I had some classes with her. She's very good.
(Narrator_) (She's somewhere around, though she doesn't have to stand in the line, ha ha :)
* Kalman nods
* Liuna and her cousin finally get to move along, as Tristane gets rid of Riane.
(Narrator_) As your mother promised, there are many other important nobles from the House of the Lizard in attendance.
(Narrator_) The greatest flurry of activity, though, comes when the members of the Imperial family arrive. In attendance are Ombretta and Laurain Dyess, their children Davilas and Katia (but not Sozen), Agzella Marcoux, and Patric Dyess.
* Davilas is escorting Dorisse Talavera, the sister of the late lamented Orain.
(Kalman) (is he stronger than me?)
* Kalman will respond in kind
(Narrator) (what's your str?)
(Kalman) (15)
(Narrator_) (ah, I checked - yes, yes he is)
(Kalman) (damn ):|)
(Davilas) Congratulations, cousin. You must be very proud of your sister today.
* Davilas says with a grin
(Kalman) Of course, cousin
(Kalman) . o O ( HATE )
* Davilas and Dorisse move along quickly, though, and don't stay to chat.
(Kalman) (good.)
(Narrator_) You are also at least mildly intrigued to see Noyale arrive, along with her husband Iban Leiva and their three children who are of age, Garan, Cernin, and their only daughter Elsane, who just turned 15 herself last month.
(Kalman) (does Tristane have anything amusingly snide to say about him? ;)
(Tristane) (about Davilas?)
(Kalman) (yeah :)
(Tristane) (w) Sweaty palms.
(Narrator_) At last it seems all the guests have arrived, after what seems like forever, and you and your parents enter the house to survey the party already in progress.
(Narrator_) The crowd of about 75 people is dispersed throughout several rooms, chatting in small groups as musicians play unobtrusively in the background.
(Narrator_) Your parents flit here and there, talking to people they consider important, and you are left more or less to your own devices.
* Kalman will try and slip away and check on Ivona
(Kalman) (Unless I'm not allowed ;)
(Narrator_) (No, you probably can :)
* Ivona is waiting in the kitchen, actually, as she can't really walk down the stairs to make her grand entrance.
* Ivona looks a bit nervous
(Kalman) Are you excited?
* Ivona nods
* Ivona is dressed in a beautiful, frothy, floor-length gown of creamy white that sets off her dark complexion. Her curls have been tamed and are piled carefully on top of her head, showing off her slender neck, encircled by a string of pearls.
(Kalman) You look radiant :D
(Ivona) Thank you...
(Ivona) Is everyone there now?
* Kalman nods
(Ivona) I guess I come out soon, then.
(Ivona) Oh, I have to show you something!
(Kalman) I would assume so...
(Kalman) hmm?
* Ivona lifts the edge of her wide skirt slightly, and you can see a pair of wooden supports.
(Ivona) (w) Isn't it clever? Father thought it up.
(Ivona) (w) It's a moving seat, so I can lean back on it when I get tired. I'll be sitting but it won't look like I'm sitting. I practiced with it a lot.
(Ivona) >(w) I should be able to dance and everything!
(Kalman) that is very clever :)
* Ivona smiles happily and looks less nervous
* Kalman is excited for her
(Ivona) (w) Father probably thinks it will also keep me from letting anyone get their hands under there.
* Ivona says with a giggle
* Kalman will give her a hug, but be careful not to mess up her clothes
(Kalman) well, I hope it will ;)
* Ivona hugs him back
(Ivona) I have to get ready... see you out there!
(Kalman) okay, good luck..
* Kalman will give her a kiss on her forehead and slip back out
(Narrator_) You re-enter the main room, just as the musicians strike up a solemn but uplifting chord, which you recognize as the cue for your sister's grand entrance.
* Ivona enters the room, and she truly does look radiant.
* Ivona smiles at the assembled crowd, who let out a cheer. For the first time, your sister really looks like a grown woman to you.
(Ivona) Thank you all for coming.
* Ivona says charmingly, though you detect a slight tremor in her voice.
(Kalman) :D
(Ivona) Welcome to each and every one of you.
* Ivona continues, more strongly.
* Kalman smiles encouragingly at her
(Ivona) Please enjoy the party, my dear friends, for this is an occasion of joy.
* Ivona smiles
(Narrator_) There is applause and more scattered cheering from the crowd, and Ivona steps forward carefully to mingle among them. She moves steadily but a bit slowly.
* Ivona comes over to your parents and embraces each of them.
* Ivona also gives you a quick hug, then moves off to join the crowd of young gentlemen who are waiting to speak to her.
(Narrator_) The dance is to be in the garden itself, as it will accommodate this number of guests much more comfortably.
* Kalman will watch her go, and critically assess the crowd of waiting 'gentlemen' ;)
(Narrator_) (heh)
(Narrator_) Well, none of them is Davilas, so it's already a good thing ;)
(Kalman) (yay!)
(Kalman) (where is The Smarmy Bastard?)
(Narrator_) (He's talking to Sekia and her husband)
(Kalman) (okay, that's permissable ;)
* Kalman will go find Tristane again
* Tristane has finally managed to escape from Riane ;)
(Tristane) Gods, that woman could talk the balls off a brass monkey.
(Kalman) (again?)
(Tristane) (Yep :)
* Kalman chuckles
(Tristane) Out to the garden, maybe?
(Kalman) That would be interesting to watch
(Kalman) sure
* Tristane chuckles
* Kalman will escort her out
(Kalman) more air out there, anyway
(Narrator_) You head out to the garden, where lanterns hanging from posts are already glowing.
(Kalman) I don't think I've seen this many people in the house in a while
(Tristane) Aren't your parents big on parties?
(Kalman) well, yes, but I mostly try to avoid them
* Tristane snickers
(Kalman) The parties, I meant ;)
(Tristane) Of course you did.
(Tristane) Are they trying to set you up with anyone this week?
(Kalman) My mother wanted to match me with Katia Dyess for this party.... I think that was her most recent attempt
(Tristane) Ooh, a princess.
(Kalman) That I'm aware of, anyway
(Tristane) Lucky you.
(Kalman) oh, very
(Kalman) ((/sarcasm))
(Tristane) And you could be Davilas's brother-in-law.
* Kalman makes a face
* Tristane chuckles
(Kalman) I'd rather shoot myself in the head, thank you.
(Tristane) Well, at least then he probably wouldn't marry your sister.
* Tristane says with a laugh
(Kalman) If I have anything to say about it, he won't anyway.
(Tristane) Fair enough.
* Kalman scans around to see where the Bastard is now.
(Tristane) (Still back in the house somewhere)
(Kalman) (where is Ivona)
(Tristane) (also in the house, along with almost everyone else)
(Narrator_) (though people are starting to drift out for the dancing)
(Narrator_) The evening wears on, and you dance with several partners beneath the warm glow of the lanterns in the garden.
(Narrator_) Anyone else you wanted to talk to in particular?
(Kalman) (Not particularly that I feel necessary to roleplay... I'll talk to my parents, presumably, and dance with Ivona, of course)
(Narrator_) (of course...)
(Kalman) (i'm pretty much avoiding Davilass if I can without it being obvious, and trying to keep him away from Ivona ;)
(Narrator_) (That's probably doable)
* Kalman will talk to... Noyale, then, since I know her better
* Noyale is in her early 40s, with the straight black hair of all the Arguelles.
* Noyale is still slender despite bearing children.
(Kalman) (Is asking married women to dance an acceptable practice?)
(Noyale) (oh yes, no problem there ;)
* Noyale will certainly accept your offer to dance
* Kalman will start with small talk, being, apparently, Small Talk Man ;)
(Noyale) (heheh)
* Kalman will ask her about music stuff
* Noyale will make small talk with you about music stuff, then
(Noyale) (But we can skip to the interesting part, if you like :)
(Kalman) (yeah)
(Kalman) Noyale, I'm wondering if you could tell me something...
(Noyale) Mm?
* Kalman will come out with, at an appropriate moment... conversation lull)
(Kalman) It's about my father... something that happened a long time ago
(Kalman) I was told you might know about it
(Noyale) Oh?
(Noyale) Is it about the time he climbed the ivy on the west palace wall and fell?
* Kalman smiles
(Kalman) No, but that might be interesting too..
(Noyale) What is it, then?
(Kalman) I was actually wondering about the duel that he fought
(Noyale) Ah.. that.
* Noyale looks a bit awkward, which is unusual for her, as she's generally very composed.
(Noyale) It was all a long time ago...
(Noyale) Are you sure you want to know about it?
* Kalman raises an eyebrow
* Noyale sighs
(Noyale) Of course you do...
(Kalman) I really do, yes.
(Noyale) Well, perhaps you deserve that.
(Kalman) This is sounding even more serious than I had thought...
* Noyale shrugs
(Noyale) I was just the same age as your father...
(Noyale) We were all friends then.
* Kalman nods, listening
(Noyale) I don't really know how I can explain it... it all sounds a bit foolish now.
(Noyale) But Hermus and your father... they were close.
(Noyale) *Very* close.
* Kalman nods
(Kalman) ...
* Noyale purses her lips
(Kalman) :o
(Noyale) I told you you wouldn't want to hear this...
(Kalman) no, it's alright.... please continue
(Noyale) They were lovers, Kalman.
(Noyale) And there was a fight..
(Noyale) Over your mother.
(Noyale) She had just arrived at court.
* Noyale shrugs
(Noyale) When you're 18, these things seem very serious.
* Kalman seems shocked, but not overwhelmingly so
(Kalman) of course...
* Kalman tries to imagine, and then tries very hard *NOT* to imagine... his dad and Hermus Vaillancourt
(Noyale) And so they fought...and your father won.
(Noyale) And he started courting your mother... you know what happened from there, of course.
* Kalman nods
(Noyale) But he and Hermus.. it could never be easy between them again.
(Kalman) of course...
(Kalman) Thank you for telling me
* Noyale nods, looking a bit thoughtful
* Kalman is too
(Narrator_) Suddenly, the murmur of the crowd and the pleasant strains of the music are cut short by a scream.
* Kalman whirls around
(Narrator_) You and many other people see Achilas Kauzlarich cradling his wife Sekia on the ground. A pool of blood is spreading out around her prone body, dark on the grass.
(Kalman) ...
(Narrator_) After a moment of shock, chaos erupts.
(Narrator_) People rush in all directions, causing incredible confusion. Some try to help her, while others search for the culprit. Still others are more concerned for their own safety and rush inside the house, or straight away to their carriages.
* Kalman looks around for the assassin he is thinking may be lurking
(Kalman) . o O ( could be anywhere )
(Narrator_) You look, but don't see anyone obvious, though there is a lot of commotion.
(Kalman) damn
* Kalman looks for Tristane, who is presumably going to her sister?
* Tristane is indeed going to her sister
* Kalman Idly thinks this would be a good time to off Davilass
* Noyale also goes over to try and help
* Kalman will go
(Narrator_) A crossbow bolt is sunk deep into her back, and there is a small scrap of paper attached.
* Kalman looks around to see where Ivona and his parents are
(Narrator_) (You don't see them immediately - probably ran into the house, you suspect)
(Kalman) (good)
(Kalman) (Can I get any idea, from how she fell, or anything, where she might have been attacked from?
(Kalman) (if only I were more clever)
(Narrator_) (Hard to tell, as she's already been moved)
(Kalman) (figured)
(Kalman) (If I were going to shoot her... what are the good vantage points?)
(Narrator_) (perhaps from the roof of the servants' quarters or something?)
* Kalman assumes there is no one up there atm?
(Narrator_) (nope)
(Kalman) has anyone sent for the guard?
(Kalman) (I'm assuming she's dead?)
(Narrator_) (dying, you think, though you're no expert)
(Kalman) Or a Cleric?
* Noyale is laying hands on the wound, in fact
(Kalman) (What is Tristane doing? is she too shaken up to be competent?)
* Tristane does seem pretty shaken up, yes
* Kalman is trying to mediate his guard training with his syampathetic resonses ;)
* Tristane is clutching the small piece of paper in a trembling hand
(Kalman) Tristane....
(Tristane) ...
(Kalman) (Does Noyale's healing attempt seem to be doing any good?)
* Noyale is still working - too soon to tell
* Kalman will see if she will let me take the piece of paper, so that I can read it
(Tristane) Waists in the dance sway spontaneously,
(Tristane) Skirts move slowly and gracefully.
(Tristane) No pleasures in the world
(Tristane) Compare with these.
* Tristane reads in a hoarse voice.
* Tristane hands it over to you.
(Narrator_) It is signed, as you already suspected, "Jux Maeda".
* Kalman shakes his head
(Narrator_) Guards and other healers have arrived by now, and you are hustles away from the scene, so you can't see what is going on.
* Kalman looks up again, towards the servant's quarters
(Narrator_) Sekia is carried away, and you aren't sure if she is alive or dead.
(Narrator_) The party is certainly over, the splendour of the evening tainted with a possible murder. The guards, not ones you recognize, arrive to begin the deliberate process of investigation, but with a sinking sensation you suspect they will find nothing of use.
(Narrator_) The night sky over Diablotin is dark, though here and there stars shine through the clouds.
(Narrator_) The End (for now)
(Kalman) (I might actually go see if Franek can give me a hand at tracking, and see if we can find anything...)
(Kalman) (okay, maybe not ;)
(Narrator_) (heh :)
(Narrator_) (Sorry, too much going on, and the other guards are taking care of it :)
(Kalman) (yeah, but they suck, obviously ;)
(Narrator_) (*snick*)
Solos
Session Start: Thu Jan 09 19:11:52 2003
* Logging #changeling to 'logs\solo8'
(Debbie) Yes I suppose.
(Curtana) You don't sound certain ;)
(Debbie) I just want to try to learn a bit more about her and what she was doing there... she seemed to inidicate that she was there to seek me out, which would be bad, because then *someone* is setting us up and Catriana must be in on it.
(Debbie) ;^D
(Curtana) heh
(Debbie) So, anyway... they went into Loick's extensive gardens.
(Debbie) last I know.
(Debbie) :^)
(Curtana) Yes. :)
* Curtana is now known as Althea
(Debbie) And then I suppose they fucked.
* Debbie is now known as Falke
(Althea) (I would assume as much)
* Althea is now sitting under a tree. It is perhaps an hour before dawn.
(Falke) (So now... we are just lazing about in the afterglow, I suppose. Was she a vixen?)
* Althea has a faint smile on her lips. You have one or two painful scratches, either from her, or a twig or something. ;)
* Falke idly hopes there's no contact poison on her nails...
* Althea 's fancy dress will probably never be the same. Oh well.
* Falke sighs complacently, then turns to gaze at her for a while, thoughts hidden.
(Falke) (What about my clothes? :^o)
(Althea) (Yours are in a bit better shape... Maybe a grass stain or two, but nothing major.)
* Falke smiles mischievously. He feels good... it's been a long time since he last indulged.
(Althea) I think you needed that. ;)
(Falke) Who is your mother? Someone ought to tell on you. I'm never going to be the same. Look at these scratches!
* Althea chuckles
* Falke protests cheerfully.
(Althea) My mother is no one of importance... I guess if you want to tell on me, you'd have to talk to my father.
(Falke) And he is...?
* Falke wonders how much she knows he knows about her.
* Althea smiles again.
(Althea) Dead.
(Althea) He's been dead longer than I've been alive - he's quite good at it by now.
* Althea 's eyes are heavy-lidded, a bit narrowed.
(Althea) He taught me ...well, *almost* everything I know.
* Falke feigns surprise, then asks:
(Falke) What do you know that he didn't teach you?
(Althea) You've gotten a taste of part of it...
* Falke smiles complicitly.
* Althea sets to braiding her hair, smiling back.
(Althea) As for the rest, well, a woman has to have her secrets.
* Falke backs away from that. ;^D
(Falke) So... what were your original plans this evening? You couldn't have known you'd meet up with this dashing young man.
* Falke says, mocking himself.
(Althea) Well, I hoped I would meet *a* dashing young man. I didn't suspect it would be you.
* Falke nods.
(Althea) And I do enjoy a good party.
(Althea) Loick always has good parties.
(Falke) It would seem so.
(Falke) I had to sneak in myself. You?
(Althea) In places like this, I rarely have to sneak.
(Falke) You do fit the part.
* Althea smiles faintly.
(Althea) Not bad for a girl from Pearl City, eh?
(Falke) Not bad at all.
(Althea) It's amazing what a good tailor can do.
(Falke) I've seen you before... now I can place you.
(Althea) Oh?
(Falke) A house near White Bear Square...
* Althea 's smile tightens for a moment, then relaxes again.
(Althea) Visiting old friends.
(Falke) There was a man with you... was that your dead father?
* Althea shakes her head
(Althea) No.
* Falke smiles, playing dumb.
(Althea) A patron.
(Falke) Oh?
(Falke) He looked interesting. What is he called?
(Althea) Many things.
(Althea)
(brb, sorry)
* Falke rolls over on to his belly and rests his chin on folded arms, to regard her better.
(Falke) (n/p)
(Althea) (back)
(Falke) (ok)
(Althea) He is...
(Althea) "He's the spider with a fly, he's the knife before you die."
* Althea chuckles to herself.
(Falke) (Hmm... using my 2 score in Sense Motive, can I tell how she feels about him?)
(Althea) (I'll roll)
(Falke) Pleasant...
(Althea) No, not really.
* Falke doesn't have to feign a worried expression. ;^)
(Althea) Useful, but not pleasant.
(Falke) Am I going to be in trouble if he finds out I spent a night with you...?
(Althea) (You get the idea she's not fond of him, but maybe a certain sense of respect)
* Althea waves one hand dismissively.
(Althea) He has more important things to worry about.
* Falke looks relieved and curious.
(Falke) Such as?
* Falke doubts she'll tell him anything but she might drop hints unawares.
(Althea) You don't honestly think I'll tell you that?
* Althea says with a laugh
* Falke grins.
(Falke) I ought to be a Cat. Too curious for my own good.
(Falke) No, I didn't expect you'd tell me that.
(Falke) But I had to *try*.
(Althea) Of course...
* Althea has finished fixing her hair and is now toying with her necklace idly.
* Falke sits up.
(Falke) Well, it seems like we ought to clear out fairly soon... the sun's trying to rise.
* Althea looks around and nods
(Falke) Or does Talavera not mind unexpected breakfast guests?
* Falke grins wryly.
* Althea chuckles
* Falke stands up and offers her a hand up.
(Althea) We're on our own, I'm afraid.
* Althea takes his hand and rises gracefully.
* Falke pulls her in closely and fixes her with his intense green eyes.
(Althea) (q) Thank you for a ...memorable evening.
* Falke laughs lightly.
(Falke) You flatter me... I'm the least adept at these sorts of things.
(Falke) It is I who should thank you for the pleasure of your company.
(Althea) What you lack in technique, you more than make up for with... enthusiasm ;)
(Althea) Who knows, perhaps we'll see each other again.
* Falke looks away, blushing, and tugs at his collar.
(Falke) Perhaps. I'll be in town for an indefinite period. The Aubins are branching out, you know.
* Althea grazes his lips with a kiss
(Althea) Of course.
* Falke is startled.
(Althea) I'm sure you can find me if need be.
* Falke nods.
(Althea) Good.
(Falke) It would be hard to overlook a pearl such as you.
* Althea laughs under her breath.
* Falke smiles slyly.
(Falke) Shall I walk you to the gate?
(Althea) Quite.
* Althea takes his arm
* Falke offers her an elbow in imitation of the nobles.
* Althea and Falke walk towards the gate, seeing no one else on the way.
* Falke walks her out in silence, unless she says anything.
* Althea keeps quite as well, until you get to the gate where you must part ways.
(Althea) It has been sweet, good sir, and I hope you will remember me in your prayers.
* Althea says with a sly smile
* Falke smiles back.
(Falke) Indeed.
(Althea) Farewell.
(Falke) . o O (You're probably Houseless... :^/ )
(Falke) Until we meet again.
* Althea heads for the black carriage that apparently awaits her.
* Falke turns and heads off in a direction that is quite opposite to the barracks.
* Althea glances back only once.
* Falke doesn't glance back at all.
(Althea) (there we go :)
* Althea is now known as Curtana
* Falke heads towards a neighborhood that a lesser noble family might conceivably have a residence in, then circles around to the barracks.
(Curtana) ('k)
* Falke is now known as Debbie
(Debbie) He's going to be so tired... he has to work pretty much right away, doesn't he?
(Curtana) He might get an hour of sleep or so ;) But don't worry, Boden and Pavo and Kalman are probably all in the same boat ;)
(Debbie) He'll see Catiana as soon as practical.
(Debbie) That probably wouldn't be until the day after at least.
(Curtana) Okay. You want to do that now?
(Debbie) Might as well if you;re willing.
(Curtana) Sure :)
* Curtana is now known as Catiana
* Catiana will be sitting in her window-seat when you come to see her, then.
* Falke cleans up after his day of work and heads up to the nicer neighborhoods.
* Falke smiles mysteriously at Cat's hubby, fully aware of his disapproval. But if any silverware has ever disappeared, it was their own household staff's fault! ;^D
(Catiana) (heh)
* Catiana smiles when you enter the room
(Catiana) Good day, Falke.
* Falke executes a little bow. He respects Catiana.
(Falke) Good day, my lady.
* Catiana nods back
(Catiana) Take a seat, if you like.
(Falke) Thank you.
* Catiana gestures to a bench across from where she sits.
* Falke takes the offered seat.
(Falke) Ready for a full report?
* Catiana folds her hands
(Catiana) Of course.
* Falke smiles.
(Falke) First off... I wonder if I might be so bold as to ask why you are interested in this girl, and what you know already?
(Catiana) She's sleeping with Izaguirre, among other people. She seems to have come out of nowhere, but she's trained like a noblewoman.
* Catiana shrugs
(Catiana) I think she's had a very good teacher.
* Falke bows his head in acquiescence.
(Falke) (Would I know of other people Catiana regularly uses as informers?)
(Catiana) (no one you've ever met)
(Falke) (She couldn't know that without someone having reported it to her)
* Falke looks thoughtful.
(Catiana) (That's a reasonable assumption, yes)
(Falke) Well.
(Falke) You're quite right. She had a good trainer.
* Catiana listens with interest
(Falke) One Duke Martan Kizer, in fact.
* Catiana laughs, clapping her hands together
* Falke pauses for effect, or maybe just to see how Cat reacts.
(Catiana) Splendid, just splendid.
* Falke smiles.
(Falke) She is one of his many illegitimate children.
(Catiana) One of the last, I'll wager. He's not as young as he used to be.
(Falke) I don't know who her mother is, but doubtless she is not particularly important... Althea would have been conceived after the Duke's "death."
(Falke) Miss Dark in fact said as much...
* Catiana sits with a finger to her cheek, processing the information.
(Falke) So, whether she is of our House or Houseless, I don't yet know... I can probably find out, if it's important.
(Falke) Grey Grizzle raised the girl on the streets of Pearl City, until she was about 15.
(Catiana) Well, it might be interesting to know who her mother is, but... I don't think it's pressing.
(Falke) She then struck off on her own and soon fell in with Izaguirre.
(Falke) She respects him, but does not care much for him. He is more of a convenient stepping stone for her than anything, I think.
* Catiana nods
(Catiana) But a stepping stone to what, I wonder.
* Falke nods.
* Catiana thinks a moment longer
(Falke) She *was* well trained. She is circumspect in her speech.
* Falke says by way of apology.
(Catiana) Does she keep up contact with her father, do you think?
(Falke) He told me she hadn't really come back to see him since she left.
* Catiana considers that.
(Falke) But doubtless she knows where to find him if she needs him.
(Catiana) Martan wouldn't raise a girl for no reason. He's not that sort of man.
(Catiana) She's a tool of some kind, possible a weapon. The question is, whether it's his hand guiding her or not.
(Catiana) (er, possibly)
* Falke nods, absrbing it all. He has little experience with courtly intrigues.
(Catiana) How did you find the party otherwise?
(Falke) ...
(Falke) I've never seen or tasted so much good food in all my life.
* Catiana laughs
(Catiana) Good, good.
* Falke says noncomittally. He doesn't think it would be good to get into an argument over the disparity between the classes with Catiana... ;^D
(Catiana) I'm sorry I didn't give you more preparation time, or instruction...
* Falke was dismayed by the conspicuous consumption.
(Catiana) I hope you weren't too uncomfortable.
(Falke) Except for the cigars, it wasn't too bad.
* Catiana laughs again
(Falke) Why anyone would want to inhale that... pollution is beyond me.
* Falke shudders dramatically.
(Catiana) I suppose it's a manly thing to do ;)
(Falke) I kept a lit one as a prop, mainly...
(Catiana) That was well done, then.
(Falke) Now... what do I get in return for all my troubles, aside from a nice suit?
* Catiana chuckles
(Catiana) What would you like?
* Falke pulls out the book of poems his sister gave him for his birthday.
(Falke) More lessons perhaps?
(Catiana) That is one thing I can give you without any difficulty.
(Falke) And one of things I most value.
* Catiana will teach him for a few hours, then.
* Falke smiles, a bit sadly perhaps. Sad about the lack of opportunity he had as a child. ^-^
* Falke is an avid pupil.
* Catiana is a good teacher, quite patient with him.
(Catiana) (anything else you wanted to do or talk about?)
* Falke might ask if she might be able to tutor him in courtly ways in case he has to go to more parties in the future.
* Catiana will be happy to give him some lessons in etiquette, perhaps another day.
* Falke nods.
(Falke) Althea Dark and Izaguirre are carrying out some sort of business at a house near White Bear square... a house owned by our late Duke's nephew Jovien.
(Catiana) Oh?
* Falke tosses her way by way of payment for the promised etiquette lessons.
(Falke) Indeed.
* Catiana nods, her brain once more turning over these pieces of information, trying to piece them together.
(Catiana) Thank you, Falke.
(Catiana) A most diverting evening.
(Falke) You're welcome...
(Falke) It was my pleasure.
* Falke bows and leaves then. (I assume she was dismissing him?)
(Catiana) (Yep :)
* Falke keeps his eyes and ears and nose open for anythign of interest on his way back to the barracks then. :^)
* Falke is now known as Debbie
(Catiana) (okay :)
* Catiana is now known as Curtana
(Curtana) There we go. :)
(Debbie) Thanks
(Curtana) No problem at all
(Debbie) I didn't learn much more about Althea but what I did learn was interesting. :^)
(Curtana) heh - I can't give you everything at once ;)
(Curtana) But I'm glad you liked it :)
(Debbie) I know. :^)
(Debbie) miao!
(Curtana) :)
(Curtana) I'll be off now :)
(Debbie) Someday I'll prove useful to the rest of the squadron and then maybe they'll like me... ;^D
(Debbie) Okay.
(Debbie) later
(Curtana) I'm sure they will eventually... ;)
(Curtana) Night :)
