Revna Glam-Færir

Name: Revna Glam-Færir

Age: 21

Race: Descendant (Valkyrie)

Class: Paladin

Background

Revna was born the oldest daughter of Oddrún Galm-Færir by her second husband, Gautstafr. As the oldest daughter of a matrilineal clan, she was raised with expectations of assuming leadership of her mother's petty kingdom. She has two older half-brothers, Alfvin and Sindri, and a younger sister, Svaði.

Her family traces their lineage back to a Valkyrie named Edda, who became stranded during the Blood War and built a kingdom for herself through strength and conquest. Over the centuries her descendants became the Glam-Færir, the harbingers of thunder, the red maidens of the northern sea, ruling over the Vågsfjorden, a penninsula on the north-western coast of (FFNorway) from their great hall at Harstad.

Revna was trained early in the arts of war and diplomacy, but she took far better to the former than the latter. She learned to worship her great-great-grandmother Edda, champion of the Goddess Frijr, who calls the heroic dead to feast at her table in the underworld. In her blooding year, she became an initiate of the priesthood of Frijr, undertaking the trials of the barátta, a symbolic journey into the womb of the earth where she was shown visions of glory and battle in far away lands. This experience made her restless to leave her small kingdom and become a heroic warrior, writing her own legend in blood across the face of the world.

As a young teenager she befriended the aspiring bard Snjall Fjorgynson, with whom she shared an outgoing nature and a wicked sense of humor. Over time he became a close friend and counselor to her, almost like a younger brother. Harstad was much farther north than his home in Djupdalr, and more insulated from the influence of the Saint's Creed, but over time Revna began to see followers of the new faith showing up in greater numbers as traders, priests, and travelers came through the port. Though her mother Oddrún worried about the shifting balance of power in the region, Revna cared little for politics or the complicated power dynamics at play in the court.

When she was 16, she came to blows with her older cousin Unnr over a matter of honor during a midwinter feast. Her kinsman challenged the young princess to single combat, and in the freezing cold of the arctic night, Revna buried her axe into flesh for the first time, killing her cousin. Although the duel was legal, her slaying of a kinsman was seen as a sin, but with her mother's support and a hefty weregild, the matter was seemingly dropped.

In her 20th year she was officially recognized as a warleader and became a Spear of Frijr, an exclusive order of champions of the goddess. This helped her to secure her mother's blessing for a journey to the south as part of a raiding party. However, shortly after arriving in (FFDenmark) news came that her mother had died unexpectedly and that her sister had already secured the throne by turning the family jarls against Revna. Svaði had used Revna's earlier murder of Unnr as pretext to have her banished on pain of death and it was now impossible for her to go home.

Although devastated at the loss of her mother, Revna also saw this as an opportunity to prove herself and find her destiny. She cared little for the responsibilities and intrigue of court and wanted to see the world, so with her loyal friend Snjall at her side (Or more often on her shoulder), she set out to make a legend and a fortune, travelling across (FFEurope) until ending up in a mercenary company where she could hone her skills and begin to build a reputation and allies.

Appearance

Revna is a giant of a woman, standing at 6'2" and broad as an ox. Years of training and fighting have made her very strong, and that strength is obvious to any who see her. She has fiery red hair that she keeps short to better fit inside a helmet. As a Valkyrie descendant, she has a set of large eagle wings with feathers the same color as her hair. Although these can be hidden with a large cloak, she rarely does so, prefering to put her ancestry on proud display for all to see. She normally dresses in well made, but not fancy clothes in bright colors, particularly blue and red, the royal colors of her house.

Goals

  • Build a legend. Revna wants to be known throughout the world for her exploits in the name of her goddess. She knows that she is destined for greatness and seeks out challenges and opportunities to prove herself wherever she can.
  • Send the worthy to Frijr. As a champion of Frijr, Revna believes that all those who die an honorable death in battle go to her goddess to feast forever at her hall. It is Revna's duty as Frijr's Spear to send the worthy to her, acting as a bridge between this world and the next.
  • Enjoy Life. For the first time in her life, Revna finds herself in a new world, outside of the ice and bitter cold of her home. With new wonders and temptations around every corner, she wants to experience as much of it as possible in her (assumedly) short life.
  • Die in battle. Although she does not want to die any time soon, Revna does not fear death, and knows that a worthy death is the greatest end to a good life. When her time comes she wants it to be honorable, glorious, and at the hand of a worthy opponent.

Personality

Revna is outgoing and boisterous, always ready to hear a tale or (badly) sing one of her clan's sagas. Her needs are surprisingly simple for a noble, having grown up in the barren, frozen north. She enjoys good food and drink, as well as good company and a warm fire. Although not extravagant, she is also no miser, easily spending her money on herself or others when she can.

She believes in honor, courage, and honest strength over deceit and cunning. She is usually in the vanguard of any battle, and prefers a direct approach to problems. She always prefers to help others when possible and generally is quick to believe the best of people. Although this trusting nature has gotten her into trouble in the past, she seems obstinately unwilling to learn from it. Luckily, she has her friend and counselor Snjall to get her out of most of the situations that an axe or fist won't solve.
