Detailed Information & Pictures re: Bears Seen 2022:
2022 Season:
April 2022:
2022.04.19: The first bear of the season was seen on 4/19/2022 in this NPS photo by D. Derby. KNP&P posted the photo on Twitter. "It's that time of year again! Bears are officially out at Brooks. This photo was taken Tuesday, April 19th a few miles up the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes Road."
May 2022:
2022.05.01: Ranger Lian's comment to mazey via email on 5/1/2022. "The majority of interpretation staff is headed to Brooks in two weeks! But explore won't be out to get things set up until June so it will still be a while until we are up and running."
2022.05.02: On 5/2/2022, mazey posted information in chat that had been exchanged via email with Ranger Lian Law. The emails were between 4/26-5/2/2022. The updates were in response to bear identification questions.
Updates from Ranger Lian Law. These updates are via email between 4/26-5/2/2022. I wanted to have all the information and questions answered before I posted it all.
Questions: Could 144 be the 2018 offspring of 132?
How many cubs did 906 have in 2020? Do you have any photos of 906?
After seeing photos of 153 (previously posted in chat) could 289 have been mistaken for 153 in 2019? Note: 289 was the sow identified with two 2.5 year old cubs in 2019. Question prompted by JG.
Reply: I will say the bear monitor's notes indicate 132 as the mother of 144. Though of course like you said, without DNA analysis, can't say for sure.
906 had one cub in 2020, and in 2021, notes indicate no cub.
As for 153, I think you are correct. It looks like in some places it is indicated and I quote "first ID'd as 289 in 2019 and this year but was changed based on descriptions from past monitors"
Question: So is that a firm ID that 153 was seen in 2019 with cubs and 2020 and 2021 as a single sow?
Reply: Since the bear monitor hasn't started yet, I can't confirm directly from her about 153 but all notes indicate that yes, that is firm.
Here are some pictures of 906. Photos posted below.
Question: Do you have dates for the photos?
Reply: The last one is from July 2020. The first two are from early Sept 2020. Photo #1, #2 and #3.

2022.05.08 or prior: Ranger Lian Law stopped in chat and shared a photo of 32 Chunk. "While the majority of people aren't at Brooks Camp yet (hopefully we 'migrate' the week of the 16), one of our Law Enforcement rangers took this photo. Can you guess who it is? Our bear monitor confirmed 32."
2022.05.16 or prior: Jonathan Kuiper's 5/16/2022 Facebook video of 806 and her 2.5 year-old cub in camp. Will 806 keep her cub for another year as her mother 132 did with 806?
2022.05.17 or prior: Former Ranger Naomi Boak stopped in chat on 5/17/2022 and posted "From an undisclosed source: 128 +2 and 909 + 1 seen at Brooks."
2022.05.23: Adam Wight's (@adamwight98) 5/23/2022 Instagram photo of 909's yearling cub. Swipe left to see a 2nd photo.

2022.06.13 or prior: During a 6/13/2022 live chat Mike Fitz commented that he had spoken to the Rangers that day, video by Explore. Mike discusses 128 Grazer at 8:40. He said "128 Grazer is in the vicinity of the Brooks River with her two 2.5 year olds. It is quite likely they will separate. It is a little late in the season for that to happen. Grazer separated from her first litter when they were the same age. It is quite possible that Grazer will come back this year and that will change the dynamic on the river. Grazer is such a defensive mother and without cubs she behaves a little bit different."
During a 6/13/2022 live chat, Mike Fitz commented that he had spoken to the Rangers that day. They told him that" mother 854 (Divot) was observed on top of Dumpling Mountain being courted by a male bear up there." 854 Divot has separated from her two 2.5 year old cubs.
