New page

The Saints’ Creed was formalized by order of the Reman emperor Valerius in the twentieth year of his reign in response to growing civil unrest. The Creed syncretized the many religions of the empire, recognizing all as valid while relegating the various gods of subject peoples (and even those of the Reman people themselves) to the status of divinely inspired humans, now called saints. The newly codified Creed taught that the gods of old had been merely mortals imbued by the divine, rather than divinities in their own right. After their mortal death, such saints could still guide and teach humanity, albeit more distantly. Those temples which would not acknowledge this new truth were destroyed by the Remans, their followers put to death if they would not profess the new faith. Reme became the center of the nascent philosophy, which welcomed priests and philosophers from across the Mesothalassan and beyond. These scholars assembled the Vitae Sanctorum, a collection of hagiographies that stands as the standard holy book for the Creed. The Antiste [high priest] of Reme would become the most powerful office within the church and the ultimate arbiter of church doctrine, even after the empire’s fall. Adherence to the Creed, or at least profession of such, allowed greater access to the empire and its riches, bringing in new flocks as much as at the point of a sword.
The modern Creed was shattered during the Blood War, with Reme itself almost completely destroyed. Several national churches have declared their own Antiste, with the most prominent being Tomás de Zorrilla of Taracón. The Holy Reman Empire claims its own, as do at least two of the Fanucian states. Other peoples still follow the Creed, but have eschewed the broader international institution of a truly catholic church in favor of their own leaders.

Despite the fragmentation of the church following the Blood War, the quotidian practice of the Saints’ Creed remains broadly similar across the continent. The Creed professes belief in a singular, immanent god, to whom followers are guided by the teachings of the saints. While prayer to many saints for their tutelage and intercession is nearly universal, most of the faithful have a patron saint to which they direct the majority of their devotion. Local congregations are led by a priest (or occasionally priestess) addressed as ‘father’ (or ‘mother’). The hierarchy of the church includes bishops, archbishops, and cardinals, the last directly under the Antiste and responsible for choosing the new leader of the church when necessary.

The Saints’ Creed extols what they term the Seven Virtues:

* Charity - the selfless love of creation as the divine loves creation
* Faith - the belief in the divine and its beneficence towards creation
* Hope - the belief in the inevitable fruition of the divine’s goodwill towards creation
* Wisdom - the rational interpretation of right action received from the divine
* Justice - the practice of the aforementioned right action
* Temperance - the abstention from wrong action
* Fortitude - the adherence to the above virtues in the face of others’ wrong action

While there are a great many saints acknowledged by the Creed, some are more broadly popular than others. Some of the most commonly followed saints in Fanuzia include:
* St. Sephiroth - an Asheran itinerant philosopher of the 3rd century A.C. (ante concordiam, before the concord) who advocated for the poor and dispossessed.
* St. Simeon Aquilas - a Fanuzian priest of the tenth century A.U.N. (annus unitatis nostrae, the year of our unity) who codified and expanded the modern Creed’s moral precepts.
* St. Ecate of Aschionne - an eleventh century Fanuzian nun and diplomat, her mystic writings are even more widely studied during and after the Blood War.
* St. Céline - an eleventh century martyr, killed by the Mad King after his transformation into a darakhul.
