The Chancellor is the head of state of the country of [[Basai]], and also the head of the [[Academy at Dundures]], the oldest and most important training ground for mystics in the former [[Omban Empire]]. During the Imperial period, the chancellor's academic role was their primary one, although control of the great [[fos]] estates in and around the Academy has always come with considerable political power. After the fall of the Empire, the Chancellor asserted control of the whole country, a situation which persists to this day. The position of chancellor is neither inherited nor elected, but rather, is determined through ritualized but nonetheless very real magical combat. The rules for who, when, and how challenges to the chancellor may occur are exceptionally arcane and managed by a panel of mystic-reckoners in Dundures. The current chancellor is [[Sabazha Naraldi]], who has held the role since 759.
