Lesson Plans

Lesson 1: Communication is Key

Goals:

  • Help students overcome their shyness about sex.
  • Help students gain confidence in themselves.
  • Provide students with the most basic tools needed to have fulfilling sexual relationships.

Objectives:

  • The student develops a vocabulary for speaking about sex.
  • The student is able to express freely and clearly her desires with a partner.

Prerequisites:

  • Students must be keen to know more about sex. No experience is necessary, just curiosity and a desire to learn.

Materials:

box or hat slips of paper for writing anonymous ratings (Introductory Exercise) notebook for each student to use as a diary pens slips of paper with sexual acts for roleplay exercise sexual vocabulary handouts - one per student

Lesson Description:

This lesson is truly unique as most sexual knowledge is not learned in a structured environment. It attempts to address the problems created when parents teach their children that sex is dirty, shameful, cheap and not to be spoken of... or fail to teach their children anything at all about this very natural act. An inability to express one’s desires to a partner may lead to strain on a relationship and/or an unhappy marriage. This lesson attempts to start young ladies on the road to developing the confidence to enjoy sex and develop fulfilling relationships with their partner(s).

This lesson covers knowledge, comprehension, application and synthesis.

Lesson Procedure:

  • As part of the introduction, have students share with their classmates and teacher their level of experience with sex. This can be done in a group discussion if the class is outgoing. For a more bashful group, consider having the students anonymously rate themselves on a scale (suggested scale of 1 to 5, where 1 means no experience whatsoever and 5 means very experienced). Students can write their rating down on a ballot and drop it in a box or hat. You can then summarize the results for the class. The class may wish to discuss the results and their thoughts. Encourage an open conversation about sex if the class seems to be heading that way; provide vocabulary as needed.
  • Ask the students if they know why it might be important for sexual partners to speak clearly and openly about their wants and needs. May break a large class into smaller groups which can discuss their opinions, to be summarized and presented to the class as a whole at the end of the exercise.
  • Ask the students to provide the words they know for male and female genitals, sexual acts, etc. Write these down on a board for all to see and discuss (½ hour). Ask the students to write in their journals which words they would feel most comfortable using. Suggested time limit of 15 minutes for this solo activity.
  • Role-playing exercise. Break the students into groups of two and have one take on the role of the man and one of the woman (for variety, could try different arrangements of genders as well). Have each member of the pair draw a topic of discussion out of a hat. Topics should include different sexual acts (eg. Kissing, French Kissing, Blowjob, Finger Fucking). Instruct the students not to show one another the topic they have drawn; their job is to express to their ‘partner’ what they would like to do (the topic they have drawn). Encourage the students to experiment with vocabulary that is new to them, in order to express themselves more clearly. If time permits, switch ‘genders’ or partners and repeat this exercise. Suggested time ½ hour to 45 minutes.
  • Homework: study the sexual vocabulary (Appendix A). Inform students that they will be expected to use at least two new words each day for the duration of the course.

Assessment/Evaluation:

Assessment and Evaluation of Lesson 1 will be ongoing throughout the entire course, and will be mostly subjective. The teacher must be prepared to gauge each student’s level of comfort with the topic during this lesson for comparison with her level of comfort at the end of the course. Observation of each student as she takes part in the activities is key to assessment of this Lesson.
